241. Abundance of N_2O in the Atmosphere between 4.5 and 13.5 km

Abstract

The variation with altitude of the ir solar spectrum, in the 4.5-µ region, was observed from a balloon-borne grating spectrometer. Quantitative analysis of the N_2O absorption lines in this region has shown that the N_2O concentration between 4.5 and 13.5 km is 0.14±04 ppm.

Abstract

SINCE the detection of HNO3in the atmosphere1, it has been expected that oxides of nitrogen, such as NO2, should also be present. In fact, in a previous paper by some of us1a tentative identification of NO2absorption was made. The most intense vibration–rotation band of NO2is the ν3fundamental, centred at 1,618 cm−1, near the centre of the ν2H2O band.
