Background: The rate of falls in community dwelling older people with cognitive impairment (CI) is twice that of a cognitively intact population, with almost two thirds of people with CI falling annually. Studies indicate that exercise involving balance and/or a home hazard reduction program are effective in preventing falls in cognitively intact older people. However the potential benefit of these interventions in reducing falls in people with CI has not been established. This randomised controlled trial will determine whether a tailored exercise and home hazard reduction program can reduce the rate of falls in community dwelling older people with CI. We will determine whether the intervention has beneficial effects on a range of physical and psychological outcome measures as well as quality of life of participants and their carers. A health economic analysis examining the cost and potential benefits of the program will also be undertaken. Methods and design: Three hundred and sixty people aged 65 years or older living in the community with CI will be recruited to participate in the trial. Each will have an identifiable carer with a minimum of 3.5 hours of face to face contact each week. Participants will undergo an assessment at baseline with retests at 6 and 12 months. Participants allocated to the intervention group will participate in an exercise and home hazard reduction program tailored to their cognitive and physical abilities. The primary outcome measure will be the rate of falls which will be measured using monthly falls calendars. Secondary outcome measures will include the risk of falling, quality of life, measures of physical and cognitive function, fear of falling and planned and unplanned use of health services. Carers will be followed up to determine carer burden, coping strategies and quality of life. Discussion: The study will determine the impact of this tailored intervention in reducing the rate of falls in community dwelling older people with CI as well as the cost-effectiveness and adherence to the program. The results will have direct implications for the design and implementation of interventions for this high-risk group of older people. When describing the design process in product innovation, many authors identify phases that can be described as ‘problem analysis’ and ‘generating ideas’. Several techniques are available to support design teams in each of these phases, but it remains a challenge to move from understanding a problem to coming up with ideas for concepts that might solve the problem. In addition, some of these techniques have counterproductive social side effects, which in fact may impede creativity in a design team. In this paper we describe a new technique for product idea generation called the ‘relay ideation’ technique. This technique was developed to help design teams move from understanding a problem to thinking creatively and concretely about the problem in order to generate concepts for innovative products or services. The comparison of actions in the physical world with actions on interactive devices reveals a remarkable difference. In daily life we easily perform several tasks in parallel, for example when drinking coffee while reading, drinking may be in the periphery of the attention. Contrarily, we usually have to focus our attention on each digital device we interact with. In recent years, the concept of interacting with computing technology in the background or periphery of the user’s attention is gaining traction. We call this direction Peripheral Interaction, and see it as a very promising approach to fluently embedding the increasing number of interactive devices into our everyday lives. The workshop is intended to encourage hands-on explorations and discussion about the definition of Peripheral Interaction, its design space and suitable evaluation strategies. Albrecht Schmidt will give a keynote, entitled "Creating Seamless transitions between Central and Peripheral User Interfaces". While the term Peripheral Interaction is not (yet) widely adopted, several design disciplines already address different aspects of the core ideas of Peripheral Interaction (e.g. ambient information systems, ubiquitous computing, implicit interaction, eyes-free interaction, calm technology). We want to sharpen the focus for Peripheral Interaction by offering a platform for exchange of knowledge and community building to establish a network around Peripheral Interaction for further collaboration. This workshop invites researchers and practitioners from different disciplines (e.g. computer science, interaction design, interactive arts, psychology, cognitive science, product design and social science), to share their experiences with human-computer interaction for the everyday routine, and aims to lay the foundations for a structured exploration of the new interaction paradigm of Peripheral Interaction.

Involving all stakeholders in the design process is often seen as a necessity from both a pragmatic and a moral point of view [1]. This is always a challenging task for designers and stakeholders and therefore many participatory design methods have been developed to facilitate such a design process. The traditional participatory design methods, however, are not fully appropriate to incorporate persons with dementia [2], [3]. They create issues as they assume that the participants are cognitively able; can make use of visual and hands-on techniques; or require a high level of abstraction ability of the person with dementia. The aim of this paper is to present a number of guidelines which can be used as a starting point to set up participatory design projects with persons with dementia. This overarching set of guidelines provides for practical advice focusing on the role of the moderator, the preparation of a participatory session, the choice and adaptation of the method, the tools used, the role of each participant and the subsequent analysis. The basis for these guidelines stems from similar participatory projects with senior participants, persons with dementia and participants with aphasia or amnesia, two symptoms frequently co-occurring with dementia. All guidelines were evaluated and refined during four sessions with persons with dementia and a trusted family member. There are a range of different usability evaluation methods: both analytical and empirical. The appropriate choice is not always clear, especially for new technologies. In-car navigation systems are an example of how multimodal technologies are increasingly becoming part of our everyday life. Their usability is important, as badly designed systems can induce errors resulting in situations where driving safety may be compromised. In this paper we use a study on the usability of a navigation device when the user is setting set up an itinerary to investigate the scope of different classes of approach. Four analytical and one empirical techniques were used to evaluate the usability of the device. We analyse the results produced by the two classes of approach --- analytical versus empirical --- and compare them in terms of their diversity and the insight they provide to the analyst in respect to the overall usability of the system and its potential improvement. Results suggest a link between genotypes and the analytical class of approach and phenotypes in the empirical class of approach. We also illustrate how the classes of approach complement each other, providing a greater insight into the usability of a system.

By considering sentences selected by a query-biased sentence extraction model from the top-retrieved documents, we create a personalised information space which is characterised by the presence of search terms. We cluster this information space, and enable searchers to interact with the resulting clusters. In order to examine whether users can recognise, and benefit from, the clustered organisation, we compare user interaction and performance between an actual clustering and a pseudo-clustering of the information space for completing information seeking tasks. The results provide evidence for the utility and meaningfulness of the clustered organisation.

In this paper we propose and evaluate interfaces for presenting the results of web searches. Sentences, taken from the top retrieved documents, are used as fine-grained representations of document content and, when combined in a ranked list, to provide a query-specific overview of the set of retrieved documents. Current search engine interfaces assume users examine such results document-by-document. In contrast our approach groups, ranks and presents the contents of the top ranked document set. We evaluate our hypotheses that the use of such an approach can lead to more effective web searching and to increased user satisfaction. Our evaluation, with real users and different types of information seeking scenario, showed, with statistical significance, that these hypotheses hold.

The interactivity afforded to the learner by the computer based media is often fairly restricted. This may be by design choice but is often brought about by resource constraints. The new layered media forms give educational media developers an opportunity to provide richer forms of interactivity, and some of the issues related to changes in the way that interactive materials might be created are discussed. The distinction is made between the interface viewed simply as an information source and the interface regarded as an environment to be manipulated and explored.

We present an interactive content-based video browser allowing fast, non linear and hierarchical navigation of video over the Internet through multiple levels of key-frames that provide a visual summary of video content. Our method is based on an XML framework, dynamically generated parameterized XSL style sheets, and SMIL. The architecture is designed to incorporate additional recognized features (e.g. from audio) in future versions. The last part of this paper describes a user study which indicates that this browsing interface is more comfortable to use and approximately three times faster for locating remembered still images within videos compared to the simple VCR controls built into RealPlayer.
