Abstract

24 pags., 17 figs., 4 tabs., Background: Neutron-rich nuclei with mass number between 100 and 110 attract much attention, since several kinds of shapes, such as spherical, prolate, oblate, and triaxial shapes, are predicted. In particular, for neutron-rich Mo isotopes, different models predict different magnitudes and rigidity of triaxial deformation. Previous interpretations of experimental results based solely on low-lying 22+ states are insufficient to distinguish between the rigid triaxial shape, γ vibration, or γ-soft rotor. Purpose: The shape evolution of Mo106, Mo108, and Mo110 is investigated through their 21+-state lifetimes, decay-branching ratios of the 22+ state, and energies of the low-lying collective excited states with Kπ=0+,2+, and 4+. Method: β-delayed γ-ray spectroscopy was employed for neutron-rich Nb and Zr isotopes produced at the RIKEN RI Beam Factory to populate excited states in Mo106, Mo108, and Mo110. The EUroball-RIKEN Cluster Array was used for high-resolution γ-ray detection and lifetimes of the 21+ states were determined using the UK fast-timing array of LaBr3(Ce) detectors. Results: New γ-ray transitions and levels are reported, including newly assigned 02+ states in Mo108,110. Quadrupole deformations were obtained for Mo106,108,110 from their 21+ energies and lifetimes. The β-delayed neutron-emission probabilities of Nb108 and Nb110 were determined by examining the γ rays of their respective daughter decays. Conclusions: The even-odd energy staggering in the 22+ band was compared with typical patterns of the γ-vibrational band, rigid triaxial rotor, and γ-soft rotor. The very small even-odd staggering of Mo106, Mo108, and Mo110 favors a γ-vibrational band assignment. The kinematic moment of inertia for the 22+ band showed a trend similar to the ground-state band, which is as expected for the γ-vibrational band. Beyond-mean-field calculations employing the constrained Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov and local quasiparticle-random-phase approximation method using the SLy5+T interaction reproduced the ground and 22+ bands in Mo106 and Mo108. The collective wave functions are consistent with the interpretation of the 22+ band as the γ-vibrational band of the prolate shape. However, the staggering pattern observed in Mo110 differs from the one suggested in the calculations which predict a γ-soft rotor. There was no experimental indication of the oblate shape or the γ-soft rotor predicted in these Mo isotopes., We would like to express our gratitude to the RIKEN Nishina Center accelerator staff for providing a stable and high intensity 238U primary beam. Abstract

The structures of the neutron-rich Co69,71,73 isotopes were investigated via (p,2p) knockout reactions at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory, RIKEN. Isotopes of interest were studied using the DALI2 γ-ray detector array combined with the MINOS target and tracker system. Level schemes were reconstructed using the γ-γ coincidence technique, with tentative spin-parity assignments based on the measured inclusive and exclusive cross sections. Comparison with shell-model calculations using the Lenzi-Nowacki-Poves-Sieja LNPS and PFSDG-U interactions suggests coexistence of spherical and deformed shapes at low excitation energies in the Co69,71,73 isotopes. The distorted-wave impulse approximation (DWIA) framework was used to calculate the single-particle cross sections. These values were compared with the experimental findings.

Abstract

The Gamow-Teller strength distributions of 116Sb and 122Sb were measured with the 116,122Sn(3He,t)116,122Sb charge-exchange reactions at 140 MeV/u. The measurements were carried out at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP) at Osaka University in Osaka, Japan using the Grand Raiden spectrometer. The data were analysed by Multipole-Decomposition Analysis (MDA). The Gamow-Teller strengths summed up to 28 MeV are (38 +/- 7)% and (48 +/- 6)% of the Ikeda sum rule for 116Sb and 122Sb, respectively, if the quasi-free scattering (QFS) contribution is not subtracted. These percentages are (29 +/- 7)% and (35 +/- 5)%, respectively, if the QFS contribution is maximally subtracted. These results were compared to those from previous measurements of the same isotopes, to recent measurements of 150Pm, and to a Quasi-particle Random-Phase Approximation (QRPA) calculation with Quasi-Particle Vibration Coupling (QPVC). The data suggest that the true QFS contribution is small for 116Sb, but are inconclusive about whether the QFS contribution is small or significant for 122Sb. Therefore, these data may provide an interesting test for the general quenching phenomenon of the Gamow-Teller Resonance (GTR). However, more research to reveal the nature of the QFS contribution is still needed on both the experimental and the theoretical side.

Abstract

We report on the first γ-ray spectroscopy of $^{51,53}$K produced via the $^{52,54}$Ca(p,2p) reactions at ∼250 MeV/nucleon. Unambiguous final-state angular-momentum assignments were achieved for beam intensities down to few particles per second by using a new technique based on reaction vertex tracking combined with a thick liquid-hydrogen target. Through γ-ray spectroscopy and exclusive parallel momentum distribution analysis, 3/2$^{+}$ ground states and 1/2$^{+}$ first excited states in $^{51,53}$K were established quantifying the natural ordering of the 1d3/2 and 2s1/2 proton-hole states that are restored at N = 32 and 34. State-of-the-art ab initio calculations and shell-model calculations with improved phenomenological effective interactions reproduce the present data and predict consistently the increase of the E(1/21+) - E(3/21+) energy differences towards N = 40.

Abstract

Excited states of the neutron-rich nucleus 148Ce have been populated by neutron-induced fission of 235U and 241Pu samples. Their electromagnetic decays were studied by means of γ-ray coincidence spectroscopy with fast-timing capabilities. Lifetimes of the 2+1 and 4+1 states of 148Ce were obtained and their E2 decay rates deduced. The B4=2 = B(E2; 4+1 → 2+1)=B(E2; 2+1 → 0+1) ratio indicates that 148Ce is a transitional nucleus while the N = 88/90 shape phase transition evolves into a gradual change of nuclear deformation for proton numbers Z < 60.

Abstract

Rotational structures have been measured using the Jurogam II and GAMMASPHERE arrays at low spin following the 155Gd(α,2n)157Dy and 148Nd(12C,5n)155Dy reactions at 25 and 65 MeV, respectively. We report high-K bands, which are conjectured to be the first candidates of a Kπ=2+γ vibrational band, built on the [505]11/2− neutron orbital, in both odd-A155,157Dy isotopes. The coupling of the first excited K=0+ states or the so-called β vibrational bands at 661 and 676 keV in 154Dy and 156Dy to the [505]11/2− orbital, to produce a Kπ=11/2− band, was not observed in both 155Dy and 157Dy, respectively. The implication of these findings on the interpretation of the first excited 0+ states in the core nuclei 154Dy and 156Dy are also discussed. peerReviewed

Abstract

Low-lying excited states in the N = 32 isotope Ar-50 were investigated by in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy following proton- and neutron-knockout, multinucleon removal, and proton inelastic scattering at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. The energies of the two previously reported transitions have been confirmed, and five additional states are presented for the first time, including a candidate for a 3(-) state. The level scheme built using gamma gamma coincidences was compared to shell-model calculations in the sd-pf model space and to ab initio predictions based on chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions. Theoretical proton- and neutron-knockout cross sections suggest that two of the new transitions correspond to 2(+) states, while the previously proposed 4(1)(+) state could also correspond to a 2(+) state.

Abstract

A first performance test of the Coulomb excitation multipolarimetry (Coulex-multipolarimetry) method is presented. It is based on a 85Br π(p3/2) → π(p1/2) spin-flip experiment performed as part of the PreSPEC-AGATA campaign at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung (GSI). Via determination of background levels around the expected 85Br excitations as well as measured 197Au excitations, an upper limit for the M1 transition strength of the 1/2⁻₁ → 3/2⁻g.s. transition in 85Br and a lower beam time limit for upcoming experimental campaigns utilizing Coulex-multipolarimetry have been inferred. The impact of the use of AGATA in its anticipated 1π configuration on these estimates is deduced via Geant4 simulations.

Abstract

International audience; We report on the first γ -ray spectroscopy of 51,53 K produced via the 52,54 Ca( p ,2 p ) reactions at ∼250 MeV/nucleon. Unambiguous final-state angular-momentum assignments were achieved for beam intensities down to few particles per second by using a new technique based on reaction vertex tracking combined with a thick liquid-hydrogen target. Through γ -ray spectroscopy and exclusive parallel momentum distribution analysis, 3/2 + ground states and 1/2 + first excited states in 51,53 K were established quantifying the natural ordering of the 1d3/2 and 2s1/2 proton-hole states that are restored at N = 32 and 34. State-of-the-art ab initio calculations and shell-model calculations with improved phenomenological effective interactions reproduce the present data and predict consistently the increase of the E (1/2 1+ ) - E (3/2 1+ ) energy differences towards N = 40.

6 pags., 4 figs., Here we present new information on the shape evolution of the very neutron-rich ^{92,94}Se nuclei from an isomer-decay spectroscopy experiment at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory at RIKEN. High-resolution germanium detectors were used to identify delayed γ rays emitted following the decay of their isomers. New transitions are reported extending the previously known level schemes. The isomeric levels are interpreted as originating from high-K quasineutron states with an oblate deformation of β∼0.25, with the high-K state in ^{94}Se being metastable and K hindered. Following this, ^{94}Se is the lowest-mass neutron-rich nucleus known to date with such a substantial K hindrance. Furthermore, it is the first observation of an oblate K isomer in a deformed nucleus. This opens up the possibility for a new region of K isomers at low Z and at oblate deformation, involving the same neutron orbitals as the prolate orbitals within the classic Z∼72 deformed hafnium region. From an interpretation of the level scheme guided by theoretical calculations, an oblate deformation is also suggested for the ^{94}Se_{60} ground-state band., This work was carried out at the RIBF operated by RIKEN Nishina Center, RIKEN and CNS, University of Tokyo. A projectile Coulomb-excitation experiment was performed at the radioactive-ion beam facility HIE-ISOLDE at CERN to obtain $E2$ and $M1$ transition matrix elements of $^{140}$Nd using the multistep Coulomb-excitation code GOSIA. Abstract

Twenty-one two-proton knockout (p; 3p) cross sections from neutron-rich nuclei at ~ 250 MeV/nucleon were measured. For the first time, the angular distribution of the three emitted protons were measured in coincidence with the tracker and hydrogen target MINOS, demonstrating that the (p; 3p) kinematics is consistent with two sequential proton-proton collisions within the projectile nucleus. Ratios of (p; 3p) over (p; 2p) inclusive cross sections follow the trend of other many-proton (neutron) removal reactions, further reinforcing the sequential nature of (p; 3p) in neutron-rich nuclei.

Abstract

Excited states of the neutron-rich nucleus 148Ce have been populated by neutron-induced fission of a 235U target. Its electromagnetic decays were studied by means of γ-ray coincidence spectroscopy with fast- timing capabilities. Lifetimes of the 2+1 and 4+1 states of 148Ce were obtained and their E2 decay rates deduced. The B4/2=B(E2 ; 4+1→2+1)/B(E2 ; 2+1→0+1) ratio indicates that 148Ce is a transitional nucleus while the N=88/90 shape phase transition evolves into a gradual change of nuclear deformation for proton numbers Z

Abstract

Rotational structures have been measured using the Jurogam II and GAMMASPHERE arrays at low spin following the 155Gd({\alpha},2n)157Dy and 148Nd(12C, 5n)155Dy reactions at 25 and 65 MeV, respectively. We report high-K bands, which are conjectured to be the first candidates of a K{\pi}= 2+ {\gamma} vibrational band, built on the [505]11/2- neutron orbital, in both odd-A 155, 157Dy isotopes. The coupling of the first excited K=0+ states or the so-called \b{eta} vibrational bands at 661 and 676 keV in 154Dy and 156Dy to the [505]11/2- orbital, to produce a K{\pi}=11/2- band, was not observed in both 155Dy and 157Dy, respectively. The implication of these findings on the interpretation of the first excited 0+ states in the core nuclei 154Dy and 156Dy are also discussed., Comment: Published in Physical Rev C

Abstract

The NUMEN project aims at accessing experimentally driven information on Nuclear Matrix Elements (NME) involved in the half-life of the neutrinoless double beta decay (0v beta beta). In this view measurements of Heavy Ion (HI) induced Double Charge Exchange (DCE) reaction cross sections are performed with high-accuracy. In particular, the (O-18,(18)Nc) and ((20)Nc, O-20) reactions are used as tools for beta(+)beta(+) and beta(-)beta(-) decays, respectively. In the experiments, performed at INFN - Laboratory Nazionali del Sud (LNS) in Catania, the beams are accelerated by the Superconducting Cyclotron (CS) and the reaction ejectiles are detected the MAGNEX magnetic spectrometer. The measured cross sections are challengingly low (a few nb), being the total reaction cross section much larger (a few b), thus a high sensitivity and a large rejection capability are demanded to the experimental set-up. This limits the present exploration to few selected isotopes of interest in the context of typically low-yield experimental runs. A major upgrade of the LNS facility is under way in order to increase the experimental dataset of more than two orders of magnitude, still preserving the high sensitivity of the present set-up. When accomplished this effort will make the INFN-LNS as the state-of-the-art research infrastructure for the systematic study of all the cases of interest for 0v beta beta. In this view, frontiers technologies are going to be adopted for the accelerator and the detection systems. In parallel, advanced theoretical models are being developed in order to extract the nuclear structure information from the measured cross sections

Abstract

Neutrinoless double beta decay of nuclei, if observed, would have important implications on fundamental physics. In particular it would give access to the effective neutrino mass. In order to extract such information from 0 nu beta beta decay half-life measurements, the knowledge of the Nuclear Matrix Elements (NME) is of utmost importance. In this context the NUMEN and the NURE projects aim to extract information on the NME by measuring cross sections of Double Charge Exchange reactions in selected systems which are expected to spontaneously decay via 0 nu beta beta. In this work an overview of the experimental challenges that NUMEN is facing in order to perform the experiments with accelerated beams and the research and development activity for the planned upgrade of the INFN-LNS facilities is reported.

Abstract

International audience; Excited states of the neutron-rich nucleus Ce148 have been populated by neutron-induced fission of a U235 target. Its electromagnetic decays were studied by means of γ-ray coincidence spectroscopy with fast-timing capabilities. Lifetimes of the 21+ and 41+ states of Ce148 were obtained and their E2 decay rates deduced. The B4/2=B(E2;41+→21+)/B(E2;21+→01+) ratio indicates that Ce148 is a transitional nucleus while the N=88/90 shape phase transition evolves into a gradual change of nuclear deformation for proton numbers Z

Abstract

Background: Detailed spectroscopy of neutron-rich odd-A Cu isotopes is of great importance for studying the shell evolution in the region of 78Ni. While there is experimental information on excited states in 69−73,77,79Cu isotopes, the information concerning 75Cu is very limited. Purpose: Experimentally observed single-particle, core-coupling, and proton-hole intruder states in 75Cu, will complete the systematics of these states in the chain of isotopes. Method: Excited states in 75Cu were populated in the β decay of 75Ni isotopes. The Ni nuclei were produced by the in-flight fission of 238U projectiles, and were separated, identified, and implanted in a highly segmented Si detector array for the detection of the β-decay electrons. The β-delayed γ rays were detected in a HPGe cluster array. Monte Carlo shell model calculations were performed using the A3DA interaction built on the pfg9/2d5/2 model space for both neutrons and protons. Results: A level scheme of 75Cu was built up to ≈4 MeV by performing a γ−γ coincidence analysis. The excited states below 2 MeV were interpreted based on the systematics of neutron-rich odd-A Cu isotopes and the results of the shell model calculations. Conclusions: The evolution of the single-particle, core-coupling, and proton-hole intruder states in the chain of neutron-rich odd-A Cu isotopes is discussed in the present work, in connection with the newly observed level structure of 75Cu.

Abstract

Organofunctional porous methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS)-based aerogels are attractive for various adsorption purposes due to the combination of their unique properties such as low densities and high specific surface areas with tunable and accessible functional groups that can coordinate to, e.g., heavy metals and/or organic dye molecules in polar and non-polar solutions. Furthermore, the MTMS backbone gives these aerogels mechanical strength, the ability to be dried under ambient conditions and ensures their non-degradability in aqueous media and recyclability. Herein, we report the preparation of carboxylic acid-modified polysilsesquioxane aerogels via a simple and straightforward acid-base catalyzed sol-gel approach by using MTMS and the novel and stable 5-(trimethoxysilyl)pentanoic acid. In this surfactant assisted co-condensation approach, all parameters (concentration, pH, and temperature) have been carefully designed to yield porous (porosities between 82% and 53% and specific surface areas between 345 m2.g1 and 36 m2.g1), light (bulk densities between 1.38 g.cm3 and 1.16 g.cm3), and hydrophobic aerogels with accessible and reactive functional carboxylic acid groups (-COOH) (accessible surface loading up to 0.19 mmol.g1) for the adsorption of heavy metals ions (Zn2+ and Cu2+) and cationic dyes (methylene blue and rhodamine B). The maximum adsorption capacities obtained from Langmuir isotherms were 154 mg.g1, 106 mg.g1, 111 mg.g1, and 78 mg.g1 for RhB, MB, Zn2+, and Cu2+, respectively. An increasing content of carboxylic acid groups influences the morphology, specific surface area and adsorption behavior of the synthesized aerogels. Optimized functionalized aerogels can be dried ambiently and show high and reversible adsorption abilities of 87% over several cycles towards cationic dyes in aqueous media. Moreover, these carboxylic acid-modified aerogels demonstrate excellent adsorption selectivity by adsorbing only positively charged molecules from mixed dye solutions, making them ideal candidates for diverse adsorption processes in polar and non-polar solutions. We report high-K bands, which are conjectured to be the first candidates of a Kπ=2⁺γ vibrational band, built on the [505]11/2⁻ neutron orbital, in both odd-A155,157Dy isotopes. The coupling of the first excited K=0⁺ states or the so-called β vibrational bands at 661 and 676 keV in ¹⁵⁴Dy and ¹⁵⁶Dy to the [505]11/2− orbital, to produce a Kπ=11/2⁻ band, was not observed in both ¹⁵⁵Dy and ¹⁵⁷Dy, respectively. The implication of these findings on the interpretation of the first excited 0⁺ states in the core nuclei ¹⁵⁴Dy and ¹⁵⁶Dy are also discussed.

Abstract

Excited states of the neutron-rich nucleus Ce-148 have been populated by neutron-induced fission of a U-235 target. Its electromagnetic decays were studied by means of gamma-ray coincidence spectroscopy with fast-timing capabilities. Lifetimes of the 2(1)(+) and 4(1)(+) states of Ce-148 were obtained and their E2 decay rates deduced. The B-4/2 = B(E2; 4(1)(+) -> 2(1)(+))/B(E2; 2(1)(+) -> 0(1)(+)) ratio indicates that Ce-148 is a transitional nucleus while the N = 88/90 shape phase transition evolves into a gradual change of nuclear deformation for proton numbers Z < 60.

Abstract

Excited states in the N = 40 isotone Ti-62 were populated via the V-63( p, 2p)Ti-62 reaction at similar to 200MeV/nucleonat the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory and studied using gamma-ray spectroscopy. The energies of the 2(1)(+) -> 0(gs)(+) and 4(1)(+) -> 2(1)(+) transitions, observed here for the first time, indicate a deformed Ti-62 ground state. These energies are increased compared to the neighboring Cr-64 and Fe-66 isotones, suggesting a small decrease of quadrupole collectivity. The present measurement is well reproduced by large-scale shell-model calculations based on effective interactions, while ab initio and beyond mean-field calculations do not yet reproduce our findings. The shell-model calculations for Ti-62 show a dominant configuration with four neutrons excited across the N = 40 gap. Likewise, they indicate that the N = 40 island of inversion extends down to Z = 20, disfavoring a possible doubly magic character of the elusive Ca-60. (C) 2019 The Authors. Abstract

The Gamow-Teller strength distributions of 116Sb and 122Sb were measured with the 116,122Sn(3He,t)116,122Sb charge-exchange reactions at 140 MeV/u. The measurements were carried out at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP) at Osaka University in Osaka, Japan using the Grand Raiden spectrometer. The data were analysed by Multipole-Decomposition Analysis (MDA). The Gamow-Teller strengths summed up to 28 MeV are (38 +/- 7)% and (48 +/- 6)% of the Ikeda sum rule for 116Sb and 122Sb, respectively, if the quasi-free scattering (QFS) contribution is not subtracted. These percentages are (29 +/- 7)% and (35 +/- 5)%, respectively, if the QFS contribution is maximally subtracted. These results were compared to those from previous measurements of the same isotopes, to recent measurements of 150Pm, and to a Quasi-particle Random-Phase Approximation (QRPA) calculation with Quasi-Particle Vibration Coupling (QPVC). The data suggest that the true QFS contribution is small for 116Sb, but are inconclusive about whether the QFS contribution is small or significant for 122Sb. Therefore, these data may provide an interesting test for the general quenching phenomenon of the Gamow-Teller Resonance (GTR). However, more research to reveal the nature of the QFS contribution is still needed on both the experimental and the theoretical side.

Abstract

We report on the first gamma-ray spectroscopy of K-51,K-53 produced via the Ca-52,Ca-54(p,2p) reactions at similar to 250 MeV/nucleon. Unambiguous final-state angular-momentum assignments were achieved for beam intensities down to few particles per second by using a new technique based on reaction vertex tracking combined with a thick liquid-hydrogen target. Through gamma-ray spectroscopy and exclusive parallel momentum distribution analysis, 3/(2)+ ground states and 1/2(+) first excited states in K-51,K-53 were established quantifying the natural ordering of the 1d(3/2) and 2s(1/2) proton-hole states that are restored at N = 32 and 34. State-of-the-art ab initio calculations and shell-model calculations with improved phenomenological effective interactions reproduce the present data and predict consistently the increase of the E(1/4)- E(3/4) energy differences towards N = 40. Abstract

Nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) for double beta decays (DBDs) are crucial for studying the neutrino mass and other neutrino properties beyond the standard electro-weak model by measuring neutrino-less DBDs. The spin-dipole (SD) J(pi) = 2(-) NME is one of the major components associated with the DBD NME. The SD NME for Ge-76 was derived for the first time by using the (74,76) Ge (He-3, t) at RCNP Osaka. Abstract

A first performance test of the Coulomb excitation multipolarimetry (Coulex-multipolarimetry) method is presented. It is based on a 85Br pp3/ 2. pp1/ 2 spinflip experiment performed as part of the PreSPEC-AGATA campaign at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum fur Schwerionen-forschung (GSI). Via determination of background levels around the expected 85Br excitations as well as measured 197Au excitations, an upper limit for the M1 transition strength of the 1/2- 1. 3/2- g.s. transition in 85Br and a lower beam time limit for upcoming experimental campaigns utilizing Coulex-multipolarimetry have been inferred. The impact of the use of AGATA in its anticipated 1p configuration on these estimates is deduced via Geant4 simulations.

Abstract

Here we present new information on the shape evolution of the very neutron-rich Se-92,Se-94 nuclei from an isomer-decay spectroscopy experiment at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory at RIKEN. High-resolution germanium detectors were used to identify delayed gamma rays emitted following the decay of their isomers. New transitions are reported extending the previously known level schemes. The isomeric levels are interpreted as originating from high-K quasineutron states with an oblate deformation of beta similar to 0.25, with the high-K state in Se-94 being metastable and K hindered. Following this, Se-94 is the lowest-mass neutron-rich nucleus known to date with such a substantial K hindrance. Furthermore, it is the first observation of an oblate K isomer in a deformed nucleus. This opens up the possibility for a new region of K isomers at low Z and at oblate deformation, involving the same neutron orbitals as the prolate orbitals within the classic Z similar to 72 deformed hafnium region. From an interpretation of the level scheme guided by theoretical calculations, an oblate deformation is also suggested for the Se-94(60) ground-state band.

Abstract

Twenty-one two-proton knockout (p, 3p) cross sections were measured from neutron-rich nuclei at similar to 250 MeV/nucleon in inverse kinematics. The angular distribution of the three emitted protons was determined for the first time, demonstrating that the (p, 3p) kinematics are consistent with two sequential proton-proton collisions within the projectile nucleus. Ratios of (p, 3p) over (p, 2p) inclusive cross sections follow the trend of other many-nucleon removal reactions, further reinforcing the sequential nature of (p, 3p) in neutron-rich nuclei.

Abstract

The size of a Delta K = 0 M1 excitation strength has been determined for the first time in a predominantly axially deformed even-even nucleus. It has been obtained from the observation of a rare K-mixing situation between two close-lying J(pi) = 1(+) states of the nucleus Dy-164 with components characterized by intrinsic projection quantum numbers K = 0 and K = 1. Nuclear resonance fluorescence induced by quasimonochromatic linearly polarized gamma-ray beams provided evidence for K mixing of the 1(+) states at 3159.1(3) and 3173.6(3) keV in excitation energy from their gamma-decay branching ratios into the ground-state band. The Delta K = 0 transition strength of B(M1;0(1)(+) -> 1(K=0)(+) = 0.008(1)mu(2)(N) was inferred from a mixing analysis of their M1 transition rates into the ground-state band. It is in agreement with predictions from the quasiparticle phonon nuclear model. This determination represents first experimental information on the M1 excitation strength of a nuclear quantum state with a negative R-symmetry quantum number.

Abstract

A projectile Coulomb-excitation experiment was performed at the radioactive-ion beam facility HIE-ISOLDE at CERN to obtain E2 and M1 transition matrix elements of Nd-140 using the multistep Coulomb-excitation code GOSIA. The absolute M1 strengths, B(M1; 2(2)(-) -> 2(1)(+)) = 0.033(8)mu(2)(N), B(M1 ; 2(3)(+) -> 2(1)(+)) = 0.26(-0.10)(+0.11)mu(2)(N), and B(M1; 2(4)+ -> 2(1)(+)) < 0.04 mu(2)(N) identify the 2(3)(+) state as the main fragment of the one-quadrupole-phonon proton-neutron mixed-symmetry state of Nd-140. The degree of F-spin mixing in Nd-140 was quantified with the determination of the mixing matrix element VF-mix < 7(-7)(-13) keV.

Abstract

Low-lying excited states in the N = 32 isotope Ar-50 were investigated by in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy following proton- and neutron-knockout, multinucleon removal, and proton inelastic scattering at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. The energies of the two previously reported transitions have been confirmed, and five additional states are presented for the first time, including a candidate for a 3(-) state. The level scheme built using gamma gamma coincidences was compared to shell-model calculations in the sd-pf model space and to ab initio predictions based on chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions. Theoretical proton- and neutron-knockout cross sections suggest that two of the new transitions correspond to 2(+) states, while the previously proposed 4(1)(+) state could also correspond to a 2(+) state.

Abstract

We present the results from an experiment dedicated to measure the lifetime of the 2(2)(+) state, candidate for the one-phonon mixed-symmetry state, of Po-208. This nucleus was studied in the a-transfer reaction Pb-204(C-12,Be-8)208Po and the lifetime of the 2(2)(+) state was determined by utilizing the Doppler-shift attenuation method. The experimental data show that the 2(2)(+) state decays with a sizable M1 transition to the 2(1)(+) state revealing its isovector nature.

Abstract

WOS: 000414625700003, In the EXILL campaign a highly efficient array of high purity germanium (HPGe) detectors was operated at the cold neutron beam facility PF1B of the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) to carry out nuclear structure studies, via measurements of gamma-rays following neutron-induced capture and fission reactions. The setup consisted of a collimation system producing a pencil beam with a thermal capture equivalent flux of about 10(8) ns(-1)cm(2) at the target position and negligible neutron halo. The targetwas surrounded by an array of eight to ten anti-Compton shielded EXOGAMClover detectors, four to six anti-Compton shielded large coaxial GASP detectors and two standard Clover detectors. For a part of the campaign the array was combined with 16 LaBr3:(Ce) detectors from the FATIMA collaboration. The detectorswere arranged in an array of rhombicuboctahedron geometry, providing the possibility to carry out very precise angular correlation and directional-polarization correlation measurements. The triggerless acquisition system allowed a signal collection rate of up to 6 x 10(5) Hz. The data allowed to set multi-fold coincidences to obtain decay schemes and in combination with the FATIMA array of LaBr3:(Ce) detectors to analyze half-lives of excited levels in the pico-to microsecond range.
