[This paper is part of the Focused Collection in Investigating and Improving Quantum Education through Research.] Teaching quantum physics (QP) to high school (HS) students is gaining momentum, necessitating the exploration of various effective methods. Specifically, the research on quantitative teaching methods is still in its early stages. Understanding the power of Dirac notation (DN) in teaching is crucial for grasping the complexities of QP, as it provides a concise and powerful symbolic framework that facilitates both conceptual and computational understanding. This study investigates the proficiency of HS students in interpreting, producing, and manipulating DN within QP. Utilizing qualitative content analysis of student responses to various tasks, quizzes, and final tests, the study aims to uncover the sensemaking opportunities DN provides and the difficulties students encounter. The findings indicate that DN facilitates both conceptual understanding and quantitative problem solving in QP by enabling students to interpret and produce representations of quantum states. The results highlight the importance of extensive practice and well-structured teaching sequences in developing DN proficiency, reinforcing the role of DN as an effective tool for teaching QP at the HS level. The study contributes to the ongoing discourse on integrating mathematical modeling in physics education, emphasizing the potential of DN in enhancing students’ grasp of QP concepts and their application in problem solving.

Background/Objectives: Schizophrenia (SZ) is a severe psychiatric disorder characterized by a complex interplay of genetic, developmental, and environmental factors that significantly increase the risk of suicidal ideation (SI) and suicide attempts (SAs). This systematic review synthesizes current research on the developmental predictors of SI in individuals with SZ, aiming to delineate the multifactorial etiology of suicide within this population. Methods: A comprehensive search across Medline, PsycINFO, and EMBASE databases identified 23 eligible studies, emphasizing the varied methodological approaches and the global distribution of research efforts. Results: These studies demonstrate a robust association between early life adversities, particularly childhood trauma such as physical neglect, emotional abuse, and sexual abuse, and the increased prevalence of SI and SAs in SZ. This review also highlights the significant genetic factors associated with the development of suicidality in SZ, raising the possibility that polymorphisms in inflammation-related genes and neurodevelopmental abnormalities may influence susceptibility to SI. Notably, family history of psychiatric conditions may exacerbate the risk of SI through both hereditary and environmental mechanisms. Environmental factors, including socioeconomic status and social support, are also implicated, underscoring the role of broader socio-environmental conditions influencing outcomes. Conclusions: This review supports the integration of biopsychosocial models in understanding SI in SZ, advocating for interventions addressing the complex interplay of risk factors and the need for longitudinal studies to elucidate the dynamic interactions between risk factors over time. This comprehensive understanding is crucial for developing targeted preventive strategies and enhancing the clinical management of SZ, aiming to reduce suicidality in this vulnerable population.

Background/Objectives: In 2022, 17.3% of US households with children experienced food insecurity (FI). The objective of this study was to examine pediatric clinicians’ FI screening and management immediately following the release of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) 2015 FI Policy Statement. Methods: Data were collected in 2016 from 85 primary care pediatric clinicians via an online survey of clinicians in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Descriptive statistics were calculated using univariate/bivariate analyses. Fisher’s exact test and Chi-square tests were used to explore the association between FI screening, health insurance, and clinician demographics. Results: Sixty-six percent of clinicians indicated that they infrequently screened for FI. Only 13% of clinicians used a standardized FI screening tool. Forty-five percent of clinicians screened for FI only when they perceived an acute concern. About 70% of them screened for FI when a patient presented with poor weight gain or was underweight. Conclusions: Immediately after the release of the AAP Policy Statement, it was found that few pediatric clinicians appropriately and frequently screened for FI in our regional sample. Our data emphasize the common misconceptions held by clinicians around FI and the necessity to incorporate training that underscores the invisibility of FI along with effective techniques to screen and intervene.

The potential of small molecules to localize within subcellular compartments is rarely explored. To probe this question, we measured the localization of Hsp70 inhibitors using fluorescence microscopy. We found that even closely related analogs had dramatically different distributions, with some residing predominantly in the mitochondria and others in the ER. CRISPRi screens supported this idea, showing that different compounds had distinct chemogenetic interactions with Hsp70s of the ER (HSPA5/BiP) and mitochondria (HSPA9/mortalin) and their co-chaperones. Moreover, localization seemed to determine function, even for molecules with conserved binding sites. Compounds with distinct partitioning have distinct anti-proliferative activity in breast cancer cells compared with anti-viral activity in cellular models of Dengue virus replication, likely because different sets of Hsp70s are required in these processes. These findings highlight the contributions of subcellular partitioning and chemogenetic interactions to small molecule activity, features that are rarely explored during medicinal chemistry campaigns.

As our closest living relatives, non-human primates uniquely enable explorations of human health, disease, development, and evolution. Considerable effort has thus been devoted to generating induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) from multiple non-human primate species. Here, we establish improved culture methods for chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) and pig-tailed macaque (Macaca nemestrina) iPSCs. Such iPSCs spontaneously differentiate in conventional culture conditions, but can be readily propagated by inhibiting endogenous WNT signaling. As a unique functional test of these iPSCs, we injected them into the pre-implantation embryos of another non-human species, rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta). Ectopic expression of gene BCL2 enhances the survival and proliferation of chimpanzee and pig-tailed macaque iPSCs within the pre-implantation embryo, although the identity and long-term contribution of the transplanted cells warrants further investigation. In summary, we disclose transcriptomic and proteomic data, cell lines, and cell culture resources that may be broadly enabling for non-human primate iPSCs research.

Depression among individuals who have been racially and ethnically minoritized in the United States can be vastly different from that of non-Hispanic White Americans. For example, African American adults who have depression rate their symptoms as more severe, have a longer course of illness, and experience more depression-associated disability. The purpose of this review was to conceptualize how structural racism and cumulative trauma can be fundamental drivers of the intergenerational transmission of depression. The authors propose that understanding risk factors for depression, particularly its intergenerational reach, requires accounting for structural racism. In light of the profoundly different experiences of African Americans who experience depression (i.e., a more persistent course of illness and greater disability), it is critical to examine whether an emerging explanation for some of these differences is the intergenerational transmission of this disorder due to structural racism.

- Abstract
Background: Research suggests physicians may harbour paternalistic attitudes towards people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and lack the knowledge and skills to work with them. This study examined the impact of a brief intellectual and developmental disability curriculum intervention on these outcomes. Methods: First-year medical students completed a pre-post questionnaire on attitudes and knowledge of intellectual and developmental disabilities in conjunction with a curriculum (a virtual tour of a developmental service site; panel discussions; tutorial presentations). Paired data were available for 33 students. Results: Students' confidence communicating with the person increased (pre-mean = 5.7/10, SD = 1.9; post-mean = 6.3/10, SD = 1.7; p < 0.05) as did their feeling of competence taking a history (pre-mean = 4.2/10, SD = 1.9; post-mean = 5.5, SD = 1.7; p < 0.0001). Their inclination toward sheltering people with intellectual and developmental disabilities also increased (pre-mean = 2.8/6, SD = 0.7; post-mean = 3.2/6, SD = 0.7; p < 0.005). Conclusion: This intervention may contribute to student confidence and their sense of competence in interacting with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities but did not suggest they adopted the philosophy of community inclusion.

214. Income Inequality Predicts Competitiveness and Cooperativeness at School

- Abstract
Competitiveness and cooperativeness are important predictors of social and learning outcomes at school. Drawing on evidence suggesting that contexts with high income inequality foster an ethos of competitiveness and inhibit cooperativeness in the economic environment, we examine whether income inequality is also associated with more competitiveness and less cooperativeness in the academic environment. We conducted four preregistered studies to test this idea. In Study 1, analysis of the OECD PISA 2018 data set ([approximately equal to]500,000 15-year-old students from 75 countries) revealed that students from economically unequal countries perceive their schoolmates as more competitive and less cooperative. In Study 2a and 2b, analysis of the PISA 2003 (250,000+ students from 38 countries) and PISA 2000 (75,000+ students from 32 countries) data sets revealed that students from unequal countries are themselves more competitive and, surprisingly, also more cooperative. Follow-up analyses resolved this apparent paradox, showing that students from unequal countries are oriented toward instrumental rather than intrinsic cooperativeness (i.e., using cooperation as a strategic tool to achieve academic success rather than for the enjoyment of the activity itself). Study 3 offers a conceptual experimental replication ([approximately equal to]850 young adults imagining going back to school) and indicates that induced income inequality (a) increases perceived competitiveness, (b) decreases perceived cooperativeness, (c) prompts an orientation toward competitiveness, and (d) prompts an orientation toward instrumental rather than intrinsic cooperativeness. Results are discussed in relation to the multidisciplinary literatures on the psychology of income inequality, the selective function of school systems, coopetition, self-determination, and cooperative learning.

- Abstract
Classroom-level quality measures are widely used in early education settings but may mask important variation in learning experiences across children in the same classroom. This study investigates this possibility using detailed data from an observational measure of individual children's learning experiences--Individualizing Student Instruction (ISI). We also examine two other suggested directions for improving early childhood measurement--measuring specific content and learning formats. Our sample includes 263 prekindergarteners and 390 kindergarteners (M age=5.2; 51% female; 20% Asian; 20% Black; 32% Latino; 24% White; 4% Other). We found that learning experiences differed substantially across young children enrolled in the same classroom and across student subgroups, particularly for some learning content areas and learning formats. However, this variation did not consistently predict children's language, literacy, math, or executive function gains. The exception was a small relation between time off-task and math gains in both grades, though these findings are sensitive to which math measure is used. Findings underscore the need for more measurement work in early education settings, including development and validation of new instruments and rigorous psychometric studies of existing measures.

- Abstract
Despite the existence of national policies that allow students with disabilities to be taught in the general education setting in Honduras, there is a gap between policy and practice as students with disabilities experience worse learning outcomes than their peers. Previous work has shown that this is due in part to a lack of knowledge among general education teachers on how to work successfully with students with disabilities. This paper examines the effectiveness of an approach to address this in rural Honduras by providing professional development for fifteen in-service teachers in eight schools to impart techniques for working with 56 students with both learning and physical disabilities. Through a combination of surveys, interviews, and observations, results show benefits to the teachers' beliefs, content knowledge, and pedagogy for students with disabilities. This work leads to potential policy implications for the adoption of similar programs throughout Honduras and Central America.

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
We study the emergence of partonic behavior in scattering processes at large Mandelstam's variable $s$ from string amplitudes in holographic backgrounds. We generalize the approach of Polchinski and Strassler (2001) in two ways. (i) We analyze several holographic confining backgrounds in particular the hard wall model, the soft wall model and Witten's model. (ii) In addition to deriving the asymptotic behavior of the amplitudes at fixed angle and in the Regge limit, we also expand the amplitudes around their poles, integrate over the holographic direction and then re-sum the expansion. Due to dependence of the string tension on the holographic coordinate, the resulting singularities take the form of branch points rather than poles and the amplitudes display branch cuts and acquire a finite imaginary part. This may signal the failure of the PS prescription to reproduce the correct analytic structure at low energies. We also observe that the peaks are more pronounced in the region of small $s$ but fade away for large $s$. In the fixed angle approximation we find in the hard and soft wall models that ${\cal A}\sim s^{2-\Delta/2}$ whereas in Witten's model ${\cal A} \sim s^{3-\Delta/2}$ and ${\cal A} \sim s^{7/3-2\Delta/3}$ for the 11D and 10D formulations, respectively. In the Regge regime ${\cal A}\sim {s^{2}}\,t^{-2+\alpha}\,(\log{s/ t})^{-1+\alpha}$ where $\alpha$ is the power found in the fixed angle regime. Using the pole expansion the result for each model is $Re[{\cal A}] \sim s^{-1}$, $Im[{\cal A}] \sim s^{\alpha}$. We compute the corresponding amplitudes for mesons using open strings and find qualitatively similar results as for closed strings., Comment: v1: 42 pages. v2: minor corrections, references added, 42 pages. v3: references added, and minor corrections made to text to match published version, 42 pages

Edge computing has enabled a large set of emerging edge applications by exploiting data proximity and offloading latency-sensitive and computation-intensive workloads to nearby edge servers. However, supporting edge application users at scale in wide-area environments poses challenges due to limited point-of-presence edge sites and constrained elasticity. In this paper, we introduce Armada: a densely-distributed edge cloud infrastructure that explores the use of dedicated and volunteer resources to serve geo-distributed users in heterogeneous environments. We describe the lightweight Armada architecture and optimization techniques including performance-aware edge selection, auto-scaling and load balancing on the edge, fault tolerance, and in-situ data access. We evaluate Armada in both real-world volunteer environments and emulated platforms to show how common edge applications, namely real-time object detection and face recognition, can be easily deployed on Armada serving distributed users at scale with low latency., Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures

Finding good educational policies requires sound estimates of their potential effects. Methods for making such estimates, i.e. finding causal estimands, have made great progress in the last few decades. Nevertheless, serious errors in causal reasoning have been found previously in papers n a leading physics education journal, Physical Review Physics Education Research. Here we examine three more recent papers from that journal that present explicit methods of causal inference. The methods given include major errors, including in identifying causal mediation, choosing variables to control for, and imputing missing data., Comment: ~8k words, 4 figs. From colored pixels to hyper-realistic 3D landscapes of virtual reality, video games have evolved immensely over the last few decades. However, video game input still requires two-handed dexterous finger manipulations for simultaneous joystick and trigger or mouse and keyboard presses. In this work, we explore the design of a hands-free game control method using realtime facial expression recognition for individuals with neurological and neuromuscular diseases who are unable to use traditional game controllers. Similar to other Assistive Technologies (AT), our facial input technique is also designed and tested in collaboration with a graduate student who has Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Our preliminary evaluation shows the potential of facial expression recognition for augmenting the lives of quadriplegic individuals by enabling them to accomplish things like walking, running, flying or other adventures that may not be so attainable otherwise., Comment: Published in: Augmented Humans Conference 2021
