Abstract A re-examination of the early Toarcian fish fossils preserved in public paleontological collections in Luxembourg revealed 70 specimens of large Toarcian pachycormid fish with an excellent three-dimensional preservation within calcareous nodules. Six of them are associated with octobrachian coleoid gladii in their oesophagus or stomach, an association not previously described from Luxembourg. The pachycormids are ascribed to Pachycormus macropterus (Blainville, 1818) and Saurostomus esocinus Agassiz, 1843 while the octobrachian gladii are ascribed to Teudopsis bollensis Voltz, 1836, Teudopsis sp. indet. and Loligosepiidae indet. The position and orientation of the gladii provide direct evidence of these fishes feeding on coleoids and thus a teuthophagous diet, rather than an accidental joint burial. Together with evidence from coeval deposits in Germany, these findings suggest that teuthophagy was a widespread feeding strategy at the base of the clade that contains the suspension-feeding pachycormid giants of the Jurassic–Cretaceous.

Abstract The evolutionary history of the cephalopod order Vampyromorpha with its only recent representative, Vampyroteuthis infernalis, the deep-sea vampire squid, is still obscure and a new specimen from the Early Jurassic of Luxembourg, provides new information on the vampyromorph morphology at this period. The new taxon Simoniteuthis michaelyi. gen. n. sp., which is based on a nearly complete gladius with associated head–arm complex, is morphologically intermediate between the families Loligosepiidae and Geopeltidae. Interestingly, the arm crown displays only four arm pairs, although an arm configuration consisting of five arm pairs should be expected in vampyromorph stem lineage representatives. This observation encouraged us to critically review the presumed homology of the filaments of Vampyroteuthis and the lost arm pair in cirrate and incirrate octopods. Moreover, two bony fishes in the mouth region implicated that Simoniteuthis michaelyi n. gen. n. sp. preyed upon them in hostile water depths, a taphonomic phenomenon called distraction sinking. By contrast to modern Vampyroteuthis infernalis, Simoniteuthis michaelyi n. gen. n. sp. roamed and hunted in shallower waters as typical for Mesozoic stem lineage vampyromorphs. According to the current fossil record, a vertical migration into deeper waters (probably associated with a shift in feeding behaviour) occurred at least since the Oligocene. High temporal soil moisture at field scale resolution (10 m–100 m) is important for smart farming decisions. Although, medium and coarse resolution (1 km–50 km) soil moisture information is operationally available on a large scale, high resolution (field scale) datasets are not. This study propose a data assimilation approach to downscale medium resolution (1 km × 1 km) soil moisture information–of intense agriculturally cultivated areas–to field scale. For achieving high transferability of the proposed method, the used input data (Sentinel-1 VV backscatter, Sentinel-2 derived vegetation water content, literature values) can be provided systematically from global operational satellites. Microwave and optical data are used together as input data of a radiative transfer model to derive soil moisture information with high temporal and spatial resolution. The retrieval approach shows a mean ubRMSE for soil moisture estimates of all test fields (Munich-North-Isar test site, Bavaria, Germany) with 0.045 m3/m3 and 0.037 m3/m3 for 2017 and 2018. Furthermore, the retrieved soil moisture estimates cover a broad range of values from 0.05 m3/m3 to 0.4 m3/m3. In addition, the temporal evolution of the soil moisture patterns are in line with precipitation events. Moreover, the drying behavior is matched as well. The proposed method showed that for the test area, high resolution soil moisture time series can be provided by only using remote sensing derived input data. In this way, this study is another step towards providing high spatio-temporal soil moisture information for precision farming purposes.

Introduction: A 2½ D point cloud registration method was developed to generate digital twins of different tissue shapes and resection cavities by applying a machine learning (ML) approach. This demonstrates the feasibility of quantifying soft tissue shifts. Methods: An ML model was trained using simulated surface scan data obtained from tumor resections in a pig head cadaver model. It hereby uses 438 2½ D scans of the tissue surface. Tissue shift was induced by a temperature change from 7.91 ± 4.1°C to 36.37 ± 1.28°C. Results: Digital twins were generated from various branched and compact resection cavities (RCs) and cut tissues (CT). A temperature increase induced a tissue shift with a significant volume increase of 6 mL and 2 mL in branched and compact RCs, respectively (p = 0.0443; 0.0157). The volumes of branched and compact CT were decreased by 3 and 4 mL (p < 0.001). In the warm state, RC and CT no longer fit together because of the significant tissue deformation. Although not significant, the compact RC showed a greater tissue deformation of 1 μL than the branched RC with 0.5 μL induced by the temperature change (p = 0.7874). The branched and compact CT forms responded almost equally to changes in temperature (p = 0.1461). Conclusions: The simulation experiment of induced soft tissue deformation using digital twins based on 2½ D point cloud models proved that our method helps to quantify shape-dependent tissue shifts.

Abstract With ubiquitous computing, problems can be solved using more strategies than ever, though many strategies feature subpar performance. Here, we explored whether and how simple advice regarding when to use which strategy can improve performance. Specifically, we presented unfamiliar alphanumeric equations (e.g., A + 5 = F) and asked whether counting up the alphabet from the left letter by the indicated number resulted in the right letter. In an initial choice block, participants could engage in one of three cognitive strategies: (a) internal counting, (b) internal retrieval of previously generated solutions, or (c) computer-mediated external retrieval of solutions. Participants belonged to one of two groups: they were either instructed to first try internal retrieval before using external retrieval, or received no specific use instructions. In a subsequent internal block with identical instructions for both groups, external retrieval was made unavailable. The ‘try internal retrieval first’ instruction in the choice block led to pronounced benefits (d = .76) in the internal block. Benefits were due to facilitated creation and retrieval of internal memory traces and possibly also due to improved strategy choice. These results showcase how simple strategy advice can greatly help users navigate cognitive environments. More generally, our results also imply that uninformed use of external tools (i.e., technology) can bear the risk of not developing and using even more superior internal processing strategies.

Objective: The purpose of this guideline update is to reassess and update recommendations in the prior guideline from 2016 on the appropriate management of patients with uveal melanoma. Methods: In 2021, a multidisciplinary working group from the Provincial Cutaneous Tumour Team, Cancer Care Alberta, Alberta Health Services was convened to update the guideline. A comprehensive review of new research evidence in PubMed as well as new clinical practice guidelines from prominent oncology groups informed the update. An enhancement in methodology included adding levels of evidence and strength of recommendations. The updated guideline was circulated to all members of the Provincial Cutaneous Tumour Team for review and endorsement. Results: New and modified recommendations address provider training requirements, diagnostic imaging for the detection of metastases, neo-adjuvant pre-enucleation radiotherapy, intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor agents for radiation retinopathy, genetic prognostic testing, surveillance following definitive local therapy, and systemic therapy for patients with metastatic uveal melanoma. Discussion: The recommendations represent evidence-based standards of care agreed to by a large multidisciplinary group of healthcare professionals.

Abstract Screen-printed sensors with chemically deposited boron-doped diamond electrodes (BDDE) were modified with different types of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) according to a new original procedure. Physically and electrochemically deposited AuNPs had various sizes and also nanoporous character. They also differ in shape and density of surface coverage. The developed sensors were characterized using scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Their electrochemical properties were studied using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectrometry of selected outer sphere ([Ru(NH3)6]Cl3) and inner sphere (K3[Fe(CN)6], dopamine) redox markers. The application possibilities of such novel screen-printed sensors with BDDE modified by AuNPs were verified in the analysis of the neurotransmitter dopamine. The best analytical performance was achieved using printed sensors modified with the smallest AuNPs. The achieved limit of detection values in nanomolar concentrations (2.5 nmol L−1) are much lower than those of unmodified electrodes, which confirms the significant catalytic effects of gold nanoparticles on the surface of the working electrode. Sensors with the best electrochemical properties were successfully applied in the analysis of a model solution and spiked urine samples.

Wide-bandgap semiconductors have been envisioned for power electronics applications because of their ability to operate at higher temperatures and higher applied voltages without breakdown. However, the presence of defects may cause device failure, necessitating a comprehensive understanding of material defects. This review provides a fingerprint of known defects in three envisioned semiconductors for power electronics: 4H-SiC, GaN, and β-Ga2O3. Via a detailed discussion of defects—the origins of electrically active charge traps—through their activation energies and capture cross-sections, we provide important insights into defect parameter distributions. This review not only serves as a reference but also offers a strategic roadmap for distinguishing between similar defects. Such knowledge is key for the development of more robust and efficient power electronic devices that can fully exploit the potential of wide-bandgap semiconductors.

Background: Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) involves myocardial remodeling, characterized by significant fibrosis and extracellular matrix expansion. These changes impair heart function, increasing the risk of heart failure and sudden cardiac death. This study investigates the prognostic value of circulating fibrosis biomarkers as a less invasive method in DCM patients. Methods: Plasma samples from 185 patients with confirmed DCM were analyzed to measure 13 circulating biomarkers using Luminex bead-based multiplex assays and ELISA. The prognostic value of these biomarkers was evaluated concerning heart failure-associated events and all-cause mortality. Results: Elevated MMP-2 levels (>1519.3 ng/mL) were linked to older age, higher diabetes prevalence, lower HDL, increased NT-proBNP and hs-TnT levels, and severe systolic dysfunction. High TIMP-1 levels (>124.9 ng/mL) correlated with elevated NT-proBNP, more atrial fibrillation, reduced exercise capacity, and larger right ventricles. Increased GDF-15 levels (>1213.9 ng/mL) were associated with older age, systemic inflammation, renal impairment, and poor exercise performance. Elevated OPN levels (>81.7 ng/mL) were linked to higher serum creatinine and NT-proBNP levels. Over a median follow-up of 32.4 months, higher levels of these biomarkers predicted worse outcomes, including increased risks of heart failure-related events and mortality. Conclusions: Circulating fibrosis biomarkers, particularly MMP-2, TIMP-1, GDF-15, and OPN, are valuable prognostic tools in DCM. They reflect the severity of myocardial remodeling and systemic disease burden, aiding in risk stratification and therapeutic intervention. Integrating these biomarkers into clinical practice could improve DCM management and patient prognosis.

Some of the authors of the present research group have previously reported mass spectrometric detection of [PdAu9(PPh3)8(CN)]2+ (PdAu9CN) by atmospheric pressure plasma (APP) irradiation of [MAu8(PPh3)8]2+ (PdAu8) in methanol and proposed based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations that PdAu9CN is constructed by inserting a CNAu or NCAu unit into the Au–PPh3 bond of PdAu8 [Emori et al., J. Chem. Phys. 155, 124312 (2021)]. In this follow-up study, we revisited the structure of PdAu9CN by high-resolution ion mobility spectrometry on an isolated sample of PdAu9CN with the help of dispersion-corrected DFT calculation. In contradiction to the previous proposal, we conclude that isomers in which an AuCN unit is directly bonded to the central Pd atom of PdAu8 are better candidates. This assignment was supported by Fourier transform infrared and ultraviolet–visible spectroscopies of isolated PdAu9CN. The simultaneous formation of [Au(PPh3)2]+ and PdAu9CN suggests that the AuCN species are formed by APP irradiation at the expense of a portion of PdAu8. These results indicate that APP may offer a unique method for transforming metal clusters into novel ones by generating in situ active species that were not originally added to the solution. We explore how Black and Latino/a students from economically marginalized communities drew upon dominant capitals accrued by virtue of attendance at elite secondary schools in conjunction with non-dominant family and community capitals to chart their postsecondary lives through college and beyond. In so doing, we point to affordances offered by the authors' longitudinal qualitative research investigation, as we work to understand individual and collective class and race positioning practices and outcomes post high school.
