201. Association of lymph node involvement with the prognosis of pathological T1 invasive non-small cell lung cancer.

Abstract

Background: Lymph node involvement could help to predict the prognosis of pathological T1 (pT1, diameters of ≤3 cm) non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). This study assessed the clinicopathological factors and associated lymph node involvement in invasive lung adenocarcinoma (IAC) and squamous cell lung cancer (SCC) and the overall and disease-free survival associated with these factors. Methods: Three hundred and twenty-five patients with pathological T1 NSCLC (253 IAC and 72 SCC) were retrospectively analyzed from a pool of 1094 primary lung cancer patients. The data were assessed using multiple logistic regression, Kaplan-Meier curves and multivariable analyses. Results: Among patients with a ≤30-mm tumor lesion (N = 325), N1 and N2 lymph node involvement was found in 28 (8.6%) and 34 (10.4%) patients, respectively. Lymph node metastasis occurred in 13.0% (33/253) of pT1 IAC patients and 40.3% (29/72) of SCC patients. Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels, SCC by histology, and tumor lesions larger than 1.0 cm were associated with lymph node involvement (P < 0.0001, <0.0001, and 0.048, respectively). In IAC patients, negative lymph nodes were associated with better overall survival compared with lymph node-positive ones (P = 0. 021). No significant difference was observed in SCC patients regardless of lymph node status (P = 0.40). Multivariable Cox analysis revealed that lymph node involvement was an independent prognostic predictor of overall IAC patient survival (P = 0.041), but not of SCC patient survival (P = 0.470). Chemotherapy was administered to 72.2% (52/72) of SCC patients, a significantly higher rate when compared with that of IAC patients (42.3%, 107/253). Conclusions: Lymph node metastasis was inversely associated with the overall survival of IAP patients, but not with the survival of SCC patients. Patients with pT1 SCC exhibited a significantly higher rate of lymph node involvement when compared with IAC patients. Thus, a systematic lymph node dissection should be performed in pT1 IAC patients, especially in patients with IAC larger than 1.0 cm, for additional treatment selections to improve survival. 205. Interference of narrowband biphoton with double electromagnetically induced transparency in an N-type system

Abstract

We predict the possibility of the interference of narrow-band biphotons generated by spontaneous four-wave mixing with double electromagnetically induced transparency configuration in cold atoms. In an N-type four-level system, an auxiliary optical field Ω m can create double transparency windows for anti-Stokes photons. When the slow light effects in the double transparency windows are very strong, two four-wave mixing channels could exist due to the splitting of the phase matching condition. The biphoton generated from the two four-wave mixing channels can cause interference and shows Rabi oscillations in two-photon correlation. This interference mechanism will complement the understanding of interference at the two-photon level. © 2012 Chinese Physical Society and IOP Publishing Ltd.

206. Saturation of biphoton generation near atomic resonance

Abstract

We have numerically investigated the biphoton generation rate as a function of several parameters in the spontaneous four-wave mixing in cold atoms. It has been found that the biphoton generation rate can easily reach saturation with the intensity of the coupling laser increasing. The saturation intensity is mainly dependent on the dephasing rate of the ground states, unrelated to the pumping laser. It implies that though the biphoton waveform can be manipulated by the coupling laser, the generation rate of the biphoton cannot increase markedly after the saturation. The saturation effect also suggests that there is an optimal coupling laser for obtaining the largest biphoton generation rate with a sufficiently long coherence time. © 2012 Chinese Physical Society and IOP Publishing Ltd.

Abstract

We theoretically investigate quantum phases and transport dynamics of ultracold atoms trapped in an optical lattice in the presence of effective multi-body interaction. When a harmonic external potential is added, several interesting phenomena are revealed, such as the broadening and the emergence of a central insulator plateau and the phase transition between superfluid and Mott insulator phase. We also study the transport of the system which runs across the superfluid—insulator transition after ramping up the lattice, and predict a slower relaxation which is attributed to the influence of the multi-body interaction on the mass transport.

208. Narrowband biphoton generation with four-wave mixing in a far-detuning three-level system

Abstract

Non-classical paired photons are generated by a four-wave mixing process in a far-detuning three-level system with cold atoms. A violation of the Cauchy-Schwartz inequality of a factor of 310 is observed. This phenomenon shows that paired photons have a non-classical correlation. The experimental results are compared with theoretical results obtained using perturbation theory. The oscillation frequencies of the two-photon intensity correlation functions are in reasonable agreement with the effective Rabi frequencies of the coupling laser. However, we find that the dephasing rates (or decay rates) observed are far larger than the theoretical values. © 2011 Chinese Physical Society and IOP Publishing Ltd.

209. Continuous imaging of a single neutral atom in a variant magneto-optical trap

Abstract

We demonstrate continuous imaging of a single 87Rb atom confined in a steep magneto-optical trap with an electron-multiplying charge-coupled device (EMCCD) camera and realize a one-dimensional micro-optical trap array with a Dammann grating. We adopt several methods to reduce the noise in the fluorescence signal we obtain with the EMCCD. Step jumping characteristics of the fluorescence demonstrate capturing and losing of individual atoms. © 2010 Chinese Physical Society and IOP Publishing Ltd.

221. Clinical characteristics and advantages of primary peripheral microsized lung adenocarcinoma over small-sized lung adenocarcinoma.

Abstract

OBJECTIVES: Micro-sized lung adenocarcinoma with a tumour of 1.0 cm or less could help identify the patients who would undergo the surgery treatment with limited resection; however, its clinical characteristics and survival rates remain unclear and are to be tested further. METHODS: Histology, lymphatic metastasis, surgical procedure and survival rates of 366 lung adenocarcinoma patients (from January 2007 to December 2013) with a tumour of 2.0 cm or less were analysed retrospectively. Among these patients, 175 had a primary tumour with a diameter of 1.0 cm or less and 191 had a tumour of 1.1-2.0 cm. The survival of 366 patients was evaluated by the restricted mean survival time (RMST) test, and the risk factors were assessed by multivariable analysis. RESULTS: Larger lesion had a significant relation to old age, male sex, preoperatively carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) positive, invasive adenocarcinoma (IAC) and advanced-stage disease (P < 0.0001, P = 0.001, P = 0.001, P < 0.0001 and P < 0.0001, respectively). Patients with adenocarcinoma in situ (AIS)/minimally invasive adenocarcinoma obtained a better prognosis than those with IAC (5-year overall survival rate: 98.5 vs 84.3%, P = 0.001; disease-related survival rate: 98.5 versus 85.2%, P = 0.001). The 5-year overall survival rates of patients with a tumour less than 1.0 cm in comparison with 1.1-2.0 cm were 100.0 and 88.4% (P < 0.001), whereas the 5-year lung adenocarcinoma-specific survival rates were 100.0 and 89.0% (P < 0.001), respectively. Multivariable analysis for prognosis of lung adenocarcinoma patients with a tumour 2.0 cm or less in diameter revealed that histology, lymphatic metastasis and advanced pathological stage affected the 5-year overall and disease-related survival rates unfavourably (P < 0.0001, 0.002, 0.001; and P < 0.0001, 0.005, 0.001, respectively), whereas tumour size did not have an obvious influence on survival. CONCLUSIONS: Micro-sized lung adenocarcinoma (1.0 cm or less) had specific clinical characteristics and more favourable survival rates. These tumours and a subtype of AIS evaluated by computed tomography images or intraoperative frozen section may be appropriate candidates for a limited resection without mediastinal lymph node dissection. Abstract

We report a rapid evaporative cooling method using a hybrid trap which is composed of a quadrupole magnetic trap and a one-beam optical dipole trap. It contains two kinds of evaporative coolings to reach the quantum degeneracy: initial radio-frequency (RF) enforced evaporative cooling in the quadrupole magnetic trap and further runaway evaporative cooling in the optical dipole trap. The hybrid trap does not require a very high power laser such as that in the traditional pure optical trap, but still has a deep trap depth and a large trap volume, and has better optical access than the normal magnetic trap like the quadrupole-Ioffe-configuration (QUIC) cloverleaf trap. A high trap frequency can be easily realized in the hybrid trap to enhance the elastic collision rate and shorten the evaporative cooling time. In our experiment, pure Bose—Einstein condensates (BECs) with about 1 × 105 atoms can be realized in 6 s evaporative cooling in the optical dipole trap.

Abstract

Due to its low sensitivity to blackbody radiation, neutral mercury is a good candidate for the most accurate optical lattice clock. Here we report the observation of cold mercury atoms in a magneto-optical trap (MOT). Because of the high vapor pressure at room temperature, the mercury source and the cold pump were cooled down to −40 °C and −70 °C, respectively, to keep the science chamber in an ultra-high vacuum of 6 × 10−9 Pa. Limited by the power of the UV cooling laser, the one beam folded MOT configuration was adopted, and 1.5×105 Hg-202 atoms were observed by fluorescence detection.

Abstract

Polarization spectroscopy of the D lines of rubidium atoms is investigated experimentally, especially with different pump powers and cell temperatures. We find that there are four candidate transitions suitable for frequency stabilization, and optimal pump powers and cell temperatures are also presented to obtain a perfect signal with maximal amplitude and slope. The optimal signal is insensitive to the fluctuations of laser power and the temperature, which can enhance the performance of frequency locking.

Abstract

The invention of laser cooling has fundamentally influenced the research frontier of atomic physics and quantum physics, and recently an intense focus has been on the studies of cold atom physics in microgravity environments. Herein, we report the results of our laser cooling experiment in TianGong-2 space lab, which operated for 34 consecutive months in orbit. Over such an extended operation time, the quality of laser cooling did not experience any significant decline, while the properties of laser cooling in orbital microgravity were systematically studied. In particular, we demonstrate magneto-optical trapping and polarization-gradient cooling in orbit and carefully examine their performances. A comparison of the in-orbit and on-ground results indicates that a higher cooling efficiency exists in microgravity, including a smaller loss rate during the trapping and cooling process and lower ultimate temperature of laser-cooled atoms. Our progress has laid the technical foundations for future applications of cold atoms in space missions with operation times of the order of years.Observation of highly efficient laser cooling in microgravity through conducting cold atom experiment in a space lab with successful and consistent performance for almost three years since 2016.
