Abstract

In this work, the corrosion inhibition effects of octadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (OTAC) and dioctadecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride (DDAC) on Q235 steel in a 0.5 mol/L H2SO4 solution are studied. The results of the electrochemical experiment, contact angle measurement, and scanning electron microscopy indicate that the two ionic liquids belong to mixed-type corrosion inhibitors with good anti-corrosion performance. Additionally, OTAC has a better anti-corrosion ability than DDAC, implying that the steric hindrance effect of the double alkyl chain is not conducive to the adsorption of DDAC on the electrode surface. Abstract

This study utilized Schizochytrium extract (SE) to explore its protective effect on carbon steel in a 0.5 mol/L H2SO4solution. The main functional groups of SE were investigated by Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The following conclusions were drawn from electrochemical tests: A corrosion inhibition efficiency of 88.7% was achieved when 1000 mg/L SE was added to a 0.5 mol/L H2SO4solution. The corrosion inhibition efficiency of SE increased with the increase in corrosion inhibitor concentration but decreased with the increase in temperature. From the polarization curves, the primary function of SE is to prevent metal dissolution at the anode. The morphology of the corroded steel surface was investigated using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques, and a smoother metal surface was observed when SE was added to the H2SO4solution. Parameters such as dipole moments, Mullikan charges, equivalent surfaces (ESP) and binding energies of the four constituent molecules present in SE were calculated using quantum chemical calculations (QC) and molecular dynamics simulations (MS). It was found that the functional groups that play the role of adsorption are mainly carboxyl groups. In addition, Langmuir adsorption isotherms showed that the extracts could adhere to the metal surface and form a long-lasting protective film, thus effectively inhibiting corrosion.

Abstract

Ensuring the safety of hazardous material transportation is essential. Many previous works have made efforts in designing preventive measures to avoid disastrous accidents, such as through careful route planning and strict regulatory requirements. However, there are also external hazards of human aspects for hazardous material transportation – for example, the terrorism. Since 9/11, terrorism has become an ongoing hot-button issue worldwide. Due to the very nature of hazardous materials transport vehicles, once these vehicles are targeted by terrorism, they become a tool for destroying cities, governments, and societies. Some past works have discussed the assessment and the avoidance of terrorist attacks for hazardous material transportation theoretically, we hereby present our solution that directly monitors and detects driver assaulting & attacks event using on-board cameras and computer vision techniques. In this work, we summarized the related techniques that can be applied to the detection and assessment of assaulting & attacks event, and provide insights into how the detection and assessment can promote the safety of transportation and a larger group of population.

Abstract

In this work, an electrochemical sensor based on a highly efficient competitive method is proposed that uses SiO2-PNPG as an adsorbent for the efficient detection of Pb(II) in soil. The silica (SiO2) and N-phenylglycine (NPG) polymer (SiO2-PNPG), synthesized using a one-pot polymer method, was applied to construct specific metal electrochemical sensors with high sensitivity. The high sensitivity and good selectivity were accomplished in the determination of Pb(II) due to the selective penetration and accumulative effect of SiO2-PNPG. The correlation between the current response and the Pb(II) concentration presents a linear range from 2.12 to 15.78 μg mL−1 with a detection limit of 0.166 μg mL−1 (S/N = 3, R2 = 0.9987). 233. Synergistic Effect of Benincasa hispida Peel Extract and KI on the Corrosion Inhibition of Mild Steel in HCl.

Abstract

This study employed Benincasa hispida peel as a raw material for the preparation of Benincasa hispida peel extract (BHPE) via hot water extraction and freeze-drying processes. The synergistic effect of BHPE and KI on the corrosion inhibition of mild steel in 1 M HCl was investigated. The compositional analysis shows that BHPE consists mainly of a mixture of sugars, characterized by a high density of hydroxyl groups and unsaturated functional groups, characteristic of highly effective corrosion inhibitors. Electrochemical experiments and surface analysis show that the composite of BHPE and KI can effectively provide protection to mild steel. Moreover, the synergistic coefficient of BHPE and KI under various concentration conditions was greater than 1, and the highest corrosion inhibition efficiency was 94.4%. In addition, the corrosion inhibition mechanism of BHPE was thoroughly investigated using quantum chemistry (QC) and molecular dynamics simulation (MDS). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Mollusc shell matrix proteins (SMPs) are important functional components embedded in the shell and play a role in shell formation. A SMP (Pif177) was identified previously from the nacreous layer of the Japanese pearl oyster Pinctada fucata, and its cleavage products (named pfPif97 and pfPif80 proteins) were found to bind to the chitin framework and induce aragonite crystal formation and orient the c axis. In this study, a homologue of pfPif177 was cloned from the mantle of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas, containing the homologue of pfPif97 only and not pfPif80. This finding hints at the large divergence in gene structure between the two species. This homologue (cgPif97) shares characteristics with pfPif97, and suggests that the biological functions of these two proteins may be similar. The expression pattern of cgPif97 in different tissues and development stages indicates that it may play an important role in shell formation of the adult oyster. The morphology of the inner shell surface was affected by injected siRNA of cgPif97 and the calcite laths of the shell became thinner and narrower when the siRNA dose increased, suggesting that the cgPif97 gene plays an important role in calcite shell formation in C. gigas. In conclusion, we found evidence that the Pif177 gene evolved very fast but still retains a similar function among species [Current Zoology 59 (1): 109–115, 2013].

Abstract

Ensuring the safety operation of hazardous materials transport is critical. Many previous works have reported various method to promote safety, while in this work, we identified and explored an overlooked aspect that affect the safety -- the real-time road conditions. For example, the slippery wet road or road with holes cause accidents for hazardous materials transport. Therefore, we argue that it is necessary to monitor the road conditions in real-time, and computer vision algorithms can make it possible. The advances in computer vision techniques shed light on the realm of road condition assessment. We reviewed and compared existing algorithms in this work. We also listed the existing road condition datasets and provided insights into how to apply the monitoring process with the safety framework of hazardous material transport.

238. A pan-coronavirus peptide inhibitor prevents SARS-CoV-2 infection in mice by intranasal delivery

Abstract

Coronaviruses (CoVs) have brought serious threats to humans, particularly severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which continually evolves into multiple variants. These variants, especially Omicron, reportedly escape therapeutic antibodies and vaccines, indicating an urgent need for new antivirals with pan-SARS-CoV-2 inhibitory activity. We previously reported that a peptide fusion inhibitor, P3, targeting heptad repeated-1 (HR1) of SARS-CoV-2 spike (S) protein, could inhibit viral infections. Here, we further designed multiple derivatives of the P3 based on structural analysis and found that one derivative, the P315V3, showed the most efficient antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2 variants and several other sarbecoviruses, as well as other human-CoVs (HCoVs). P315V3 also exhibited effective prophylactic efficacy against the SARS-CoV-2 Delta and Omicron variants in mice via intranasal administration. These results suggest that P315V3, which is in Phase II clinical trial, is promising for further development as a nasal pan-SARS-CoV-2 or pan-CoVs inhibitor to prevent or treat CoV diseases.

Abstract

Dye-related water pollution is a worldwide problem. This work describes a facile fabrication of the super-absorbent sodium alginate hydrogel (SA-Ca hydrogel) with improved chemical stability and biocompatibility. By combining the freeze–thaw process with calcium crosslinking, hydrogel with nanopores ranging from 10 to 200 nm was prepared. The SA-Ca hydrogel presents a swelling ratio of 90.6 g·g−1. The effects of pH, initial concentration of the methylene blue (MB) concentration, amounts of absorbents, and temperature on adsorption capacity are investigated. At optimized conditions, the maximum adsorption capacity can reach 2986 mg·g−1. The adsorption kinetics are analyzed using different models, and the pseudo-second-order model can be used to describe the kinetic profile. According to the thermodynamic parameters, the MB adsorption processes using SA-Ca hydrogel are favorable, spontaneous, and endothermic.
