226. Effects of La/Ce Ratio on Coloring and Crystallization of MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-TiO2-CeO2-La2O3 Glasses.

Abstract

1.0MgO-1.2Al2O3-2.8SiO2-1.2TiO2-(0.6-2 x)CeO2- xLa2O3( x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3) glasses are prepared, and the La/Ce ratio-dependent coloring and crystallization are investigated by optical transmission spectrum, the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy ( XPS), X-ray diffraction ( XRD), scanning electron microscopy ( SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy ( EDS), and network analyzer. The results show that the coloring of the parent glasses varies markedly with La/Ce ratio, while the crystallization of the glasses shows no significant difference. With the increase in x, the color of the glass ranges from red-brown to yellow and the transmittance increases markedly in visible region. The deepest color when x = 0 is related with the predominant presence of Ti4+ and Ce3+, while the lightest color when x = 0.3 is attributed to Ti4+. Perrierite, rutile, cordierite, and magnesium aluminotitanate ( MAT) are found for all the glass-ceramic samples, and the relative content of these phases is almost unchanged at the same crystallization temperature. However, the chemical composition of perrierite changes greatly with La/Ce ratio. As La2O3 replaces CeO2 gradually, the dielectric constant ε r maintains at about 11 and the quality factor Q× f fluctuates within a narrow range from 20,000 GHz to 22 000 GHz, while the temperature coefficient of resonant frequency τ f varies between 38 and 52 ppm/°C. Abstract

The effects of heat treatment on phase separation, crystallization, and microwave dielectric properties of the 1MgO·1.2Al2O3·2.8SiO2·1.4TiO2·0.4La2O3 (in molar ratio) glass and glass-ceramic were investigated. The results show that the parent glass has a two-liquid phase separation structure, with a droplet phase rich in Al & Ti embedded in the matrix rich in Si. Heat treatment of the glass at 770°C leads to the enlargement of the liquid droplets and promotes the formation of crystals from the droplets. The initial crystalline phase perrierite appears after heat treatment of the parent glass at 850°C, and it is analyzed to precipitate from the Al&Ti-rich droplet phase. With increasing heat-treatment temperature from 850°C to 1250°C, the crystallization degree of the glass increases as the other main crystal phases rutile, cordierite and magnesium aluminotitanate precipitate successively from the material. As a summation of the phases present, the dielectric constant εr of the material after heat treatment at 950°C-1250°C fluctuates between 11.3 and 12.3, while the quality factor Q × f and the temperature coefficient τf go up firstly and then decrease with the peak at 1200°C, ranging from 8200 to 19,500 GHz and −57ppm/°C to 24 ppm/°C, respectively. Abstract

Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) is an ultrasensitive technique for measuring long-lived actinides, e.g., 236U, 237Np and Pu isotopes. In order to improve the detection limit for actinides abundance, and to increase the detection efficiency in actinides AMS measurement, a 16-strip silicon detector was used to identify actinides at the Center for Isotopic Research on Cultural and Environmental heritage in Caserta, Italy. The sensitivity of 236U/238U was 1 × 10−11by special resolution and 5.0 × 10−12by time resolution. The pulse height defect of 236U in an ion-implanted silicon detector in the low-energy range with 17.26 MeV is presented.

Abstract

The spatial distributions of 239+240Pu and 137Cs in soils from Longji Rice Terraces were investigated to evaluate soil erosion. The activity concentrations of 239+240Pu and 137Cs in the surface soils of the paddy fields were in the range of 0.089–0.734 and 1.80–7.88 mBq/g, respectively. The activities of 239+240Pu and 137Cs showed very similar distribution trends, first increasing and then decreasing with increasing elevation. The 240Pu/239Pu atom ratios in the surface soils ranged from 0.162 to 0.232. The activities of 239+240Pu and 137Cs in the soil cores tended to be uniformly distributed within the plowed layer and declined exponentially below this depth. The mean soil erosion rates of Longji Rice Terraces estimated by 239+240Pu and 137Cs tracer methods were 5.44 t/(ha·a) and 5.16 t/(ha·a), respectively, which demonstrated that plutonium can replace 137Cs as an ideal tracer for soil erosion research in the future. Landform features are the main factors affecting the distribution of plutonium and 137Cs as well as soil erosion in the Longji Rice Terraces.
