- Abstract
The core-collapse supernova (CCSN) is considered one of the most energetic astrophysical events in the universe. The early and prompt detection of neutrinos before (pre-SN) and during the supernova (SN) burst presents a unique opportunity for multi-messenger observations of CCSN events. In this study, we describe the monitoring concept and present the sensitivity of the system to pre-SN and SN neutrinos at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector currently under construction in South China. The real-time monitoring system is designed to ensure both prompt alert speed and comprehensive coverage of progenitor stars. It incorporates prompt monitors on the electronic board as well as online monitors at the data acquisition stage. Assuming a false alert rate of 1 per year, this monitoring system exhibits sensitivity to pre-SN neutrinos up to a distance of approximately 1.6 (0.9) kiloparsecs and SN neutrinos up to about 370 (360) kiloparsecs for a progenitor mass of 30 solar masses, considering both normal and inverted mass ordering scenarios. The pointing ability of the CCSN is evaluated by analyzing the accumulated event anisotropy of inverse beta decay interactions from pre-SN or SN neutrinos. This, along with the early alert, can play a crucial role in facilitating follow-up multi-messenger observations of the next galactic or nearby extragalactic CCSN.

Quantize-Map-and-Forward (QMF) relaying has been shown to achieve the optimal diversity-multiplexing trade-off (DMT) for arbitrary slow fading full-duplex networks as well as for the single-relay half-duplex network. A key reason for this is that quantizing at the noise level suffices to achieve the cut-set bound approximately to within an additive gap, without any requirement of instantaneous channel state information (CSI). However, DMT only captures the high SNR performance and potentially, limited CSI at the relay can improve performance at moderate SNRs. In this work we propose an optimization framework for QMF relaying over slow fading channels. Focusing on vector Gaussian quantizers, we optimize the outage probability for the full-duplex and half-duplex single relay by finding the best quantization level and relay schedule according to the available CSI at the relays. For the N-relay diamond network, we derive an universal quantizer that sharpens the additive approximation gap of QMF from the conventional \Theta(N) bits/s/Hz to \Theta(log(N)) bits/s/Hz using only network topology information. Analytical solutions to channel-aware optimal quantizers for two-relay and symmetric N-relay diamond networks are also derived. In addition, we prove that suitable hybridizations of our optimized QMF schemes with Decode-Forward (DF) or Dynamic DF protocols provide significant finite SNR gains over the individual schemes., Comment: Submitted to IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications on 11th July 2013

We study the channel coding problem when errors and uncertainty occur in the encoding process. For simplicity we assume the channel between the encoder and the decoder is perfect. Focusing on linear block codes, we model the encoding uncertainty as erasures on the edges in the factor graph of the encoder generator matrix. We first take a worst-case approach and find the maximum tolerable number of erasures for perfect error correction. Next, we take a probabilistic approach and derive a sufficient condition on the rate of a set of codes, such that decoding error probability vanishes as blocklength tends to infinity. In both scenarios, due to the inherent asymmetry of the problem, we derive the results from first principles, which indicates that robustness to encoding errors requires new properties of codes different from classical properties., Comment: 12 pages; a shorter version of this work will appear in the proceedings of ISIT 2013

We investigate how to exploit intermittent feedback for interference management. Focusing on the two-user linear deterministic interference channel, we completely characterize the capacity region. We find that the characterization only depends on the forward channel parameters and the marginal probability distribution of each feedback link. The scheme we propose makes use of block Markov encoding and quantize-map-and-forward at the transmitters, and backward decoding at the receivers. Matching outer bounds are derived based on novel genie-aided techniques. We study opportunistic interference management when there is bursty interference in parallel 2-user linear deterministic interference channels. A degraded message set communication problem is formulated to exploit the burstiness of interference in M subcarriers allocated to each user. We focus on symmetric rate requirements based on the number of interfered subcarriers rather than the exact set of interfered subcarriers. Inner bounds are obtained using erasure coding, signal-scale alignment and Han-Kobayashi coding strategy. Tight outer bounds for a variety of regimes are obtained using the El Gamal-Costa injective interference channel bounds and a sliding window subset entropy inequality. The result demonstrates an application of techniques from multilevel diversity coding to interference channels. In this paper we develop a low-complexity coding scheme and system design framework for the half duplex relay channel based on the Quantize-Map-and-Forward (QMF) relay- ing scheme. The proposed framework allows linear complexity operations at all network terminals. We propose the use of binary LDPC codes for encoding at the source and LDGM codes for mapping at the relay. We express joint decoding at the destination as a belief propagation algorithm over a factor graph. This graph has the LDPC and LDGM codes as subgraphs connected via probabilistic constraints that model the QMF relay operations. We show that this coding framework extends naturally to the high SNR regime using bit interleaved coded modulation (BICM). We consider two-way interference channels (ICs) where forward and backward channels are ICs but not necessarily the same. We first consider a scenario where there are only two forward messages and feedback is offered through the backward IC for aiding forward-message transmission. For a linear deterministic model of this channel, we develop inner and outer bounds that match for a wide range of channel parameters. We find that the backward IC can be more efficiently used for feedback rather than if it were used for sending its own independent backward messages. As a consequence, we show that feedback can provide a net increase in capacity even if feedback cost is taken into consideration. We investigate the two unicast flow problem over layered linear deterministic networks with arbitrary number of nodes. When the minimum cut value between each source-destination pair is constrained to be 1, it is obvious that the triangular rate region {(R_1,R_2):R_1,R_2> 0, R_1+R_2< 1} can be achieved, and that one cannot achieve beyond the square rate region {(R_1,R_2):R_1,R_2> 0, R_1< 1,R_2< 1}. Analogous to the work by Wang and Shroff for wired networks, we provide the necessary and sufficient conditions for the capacity region to be the triangular region and the necessary and sufficient conditions for it to be the square region. Moreover, we completely characterize the capacity region and conclude that there are exactly three more possible capacity regions of this class of networks, in contrast to the result in wired networks where only the triangular and square rate regions are possible. Interference limits performance in wireless networks, and cooperation among receivers or transmitters can help mitigate interference by forming distributed MIMO systems. Earlier work shows how limited receiver cooperation helps mitigate interference. The scenario with transmitter cooperation, however, is more difficult to tackle. In this paper we study the two-user Gaussian interference channel with conferencing transmitters to make progress towards this direction. We characterize the capacity region to within 6.5 bits/s/Hz, regardless of channel parameters. Based on the constant-to-optimality result, we show that there is an interesting reciprocity between the scenario with conferencing transmitters and the scenario with conferencing receivers, and their capacity regions are within a constant gap to each other. The rate at which receivers cooperate, however, is limited in most scenarios. How much interference can one bit of receiver cooperation mitigate? In this paper, we study the two-user Gaussian interference channel with conferencing decoders to answer this question in a simple setting. We identify two regions regarding the gain from receiver cooperation: linear and saturation regions. In the linear region receiver cooperation is efficient and provides a degrees-of-freedom gain, which is either one cooperation bit buys one more bit or two cooperation bits buy one more bit until saturation. In the saturation region receiver cooperation is inefficient and provides a power gain, which is at most a constant regardless of the rate at which receivers cooperate. The conclusion is drawn from the characterization of capacity region to within two bits. Interference is a major issue that limits the performance in wireless networks, and cooperation among receivers can help mitigate interference by forming distributed MIMO systems. The rate at which receivers cooperate, however, is limited in most scenarios. How much interference can one bit of receiver cooperation mitigate? In this paper, we study the two-user Gaussian interference channel with conferencing decoders to answer this question in a simple setting. We characterize the fundamental gain from cooperation: at high SNR, when INR is below 50% of SNR in dB scale, one-bit cooperation per direction buys roughly one-bit gain per user until full receiver cooperation performance is reached, while when INR is between 67% and 200% of SNR in dB scale, one-bit cooperation per direction buys roughly half-bit gain per user. The conclusion is drawn based on the approximate characterization of the symmetric capacity in the symmetric set-up. We propose strategies achieving the symmetric capacity universally to within 3 bits. We evaluated the long-term risks of overall cancer and all-cause mortality associated with five types of phytopharmaceuticals and the most commonly used estrogen-progestogen medications for the treatment of postmenopausal syndrome in women. Using data from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) from 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2018, we conducted a 1:2 matched cohort study with 12,087 eligible patients. We compared phytopharmaceuticals -only users (n = 4029, phytopharmaceuticals group) with HRT-only users (n = 8058, HRT group) with a washout period of ≥6 months. The phytopharmaceuticals group had significantly lower risks of overall cancer and all-cause mortality than the HRT group (adjusted hazard ratio [95% confidence interval]: 0.60 [0.40–0.9] and 0.40 [0.16–0.99], respectively) after over 180 days of use. Bupleurum and Peony Formula were associated with lower risks of overall cancer and all-cause mortality (aHR: 0.57 [0.36–0.92] and 0.33 [0.11–1.05], respectively). In conclusion, phytopharmaceuticals may serve as an alternative therapy to HRT for alleviating menopausal symptoms and reducing health risks, leading to more favorable long-term health outcomes. In complex environments, users frequently need to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, which poses significant challenges for user interface design. For instance, when driving, users must maintain continuous visual attention on the road ahead while also monitoring rearview mirrors and performing shoulder checks. These multitasking scenarios present substantial design challenges in effectively guiding users. To address these challenges, we focus on investigating and designing visual and haptic guidance systems to augment users' performance. We initially propose the use of visual guidance, specifically employing a dynamic arrow as a guidance technique. Our evaluation shows that dynamic arrows significantly expedite both reaction and selection times. We further introduce and evaluate haptic feedback, which users perceive as more salient than visual guidance, leading to quicker responses when switching from primary to secondary tasks. This allows users to maintain visual attention on the primary task while simultaneously responding effectively to haptic cues. Our findings suggest that multimodal guidance, especially haptic guidance, can enhance both reaction time and user experience in dual-task environments, offering promising practical implications and guidelines for designing more user-friendly interfaces and systems. This article compares distribution functions among pairs of locations in their domains, in contrast to the typical approach of univariate comparison across individual locations. This bivariate approach is studied in the presence of sampling bias, which has been gaining attention in COVID-19 studies that over-represent more symptomatic people. In cases with either known or unknown sampling bias, we introduce Anderson–Darling-type tests based on both the univariate and bivariate formulation. A simulation study shows the superior performance of the bivariate approach over the univariate one.
