- Abstract
We developed and launched an online, course-integrated module called Growth & Goals aimed to help students better develop evidence-based learning skills. The module focuses on five main concepts: self-regulated learning, goal-setting, metacognition, mindfulness, and mindsets (growth and fixed continuum). Growth & Goals is an open education resource available for download at no cost to any educator through FlynnResearchGroup.com/GrowthGoals. The module is available in both French and English and can be customized to any university course. The module addresses the aforementioned concepts through a combination of text and videos, with interspersed interactive activities that students use to develop their learning skills. Growth & Goals is intended to help students effectively manage the challenges they may encounter as they progress through their postsecondary academic career and beyond and become more proficient learners. Since 2017, the module has been implemented in more than 15 university courses and has been used by over 8000 students. The preliminary evaluation of Growth & Goals has been largely positive, indicating that the module has been well received by both students and educators and that it successfully guides students in learning the module's concepts.

Astrophysics - Astrophysics of Galaxies - Abstract
We present molecular gas-dynamical mass measurements of the central black holes in the giant elliptical galaxies NGC 4786 and NGC 5193, based on CO(2$-$1) observations from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and Hubble Space Telescope near-infrared imaging. The central region in each galaxy contains a circumnuclear disk that exhibits orderly rotation with projected line-of-sight velocities of ${\sim} 270\, \mathrm{km}\,\mathrm{s^{-1}}$. We build gas-dynamical models for the rotating disk in each galaxy and fit them directly to the ALMA data cubes. At $0.31^{\prime \prime}$resolution, the ALMA observations do not fully resolve the black hole sphere of influence (SOI), and neither galaxy exhibits a central rise in rotation speed, indicating that emission from deep within the SOI is not detected. As a result, our models do not tightly constrain the central black hole mass in either galaxy, but they prefer the presence of a central massive object in both galaxies. We measure the black hole mass to be $(M_{\mathrm{BH}}/10^8\, M_{\odot}) = 5.0 \pm 0.2 \,[\mathrm{1\sigma \,statistical}] \,^{+1.4}_{-1.3} \,[\mathrm{systematic}]$ in NGC 4786 and $(M_{\mathrm{BH}}/10^8\, M_{\odot}) = 1.4 \pm 0.03 \, [\mathrm{1\sigma\,statistical}] ^{+1.5}_{-0.1} \,[\mathrm{systematic}]$ in NGC 5193. The largest component of each measurement's error budget is from the systematic uncertainty associated with the extinction correction in the host galaxy models. This underscores the importance of assessing the impact of dust attenuation on the inferred $M_{\mathrm{BH}}$., Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures. Accepted for publication in ApJ

Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with binary primary endpoints introduce novel challenges for inferring the causal effects of treatments. The most significant challenge is non-collapsibility, in which the conditional odds ratio estimand under covariate adjustment differs from the unconditional estimand in the logistic regression analysis of RCT data. This issue gives rise to apparent paradoxes, such as the variance of the estimator for the conditional odds ratio from a covariate-adjusted model being greater than the variance of the estimator from the unadjusted model. We address this challenge in the context of adjustment based on predictions of control outcomes from generative artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, which are referred to as prognostic scores. We demonstrate that prognostic score adjustment in logistic regression increases the power of the Wald test for the conditional odds ratio under a fixed sample size, or alternatively reduces the necessary sample size to achieve a desired power, compared to the unadjusted analysis. We derive formulae for prospective calculations of the power gain and sample size reduction that can result from adjustment for the prognostic score. Furthermore, we utilize g-computation to expand the scope of prognostic score adjustment to inferences on the marginal risk difference, relative risk, and odds ratio estimands. We demonstrate the validity of our formulae via extensive simulation studies that encompass different types of logistic regression model specifications. Our simulation studies also indicate how prognostic score adjustment can reduce the variance of g-computation estimators for the marginal estimands while maintaining frequentist properties such as asymptotic unbiasedness and Type I error rate control. Our methodology can ultimately enable more definitive and conclusive analyses for RCTs with binary primary endpoints., Comment: 27 pages, 1 figure, 9 tables

Physics - Fluid Dynamics - Abstract
This work presents a numerical study of a diffusion flame in a reacting, two-dimensional, turbulent, viscous, multi-component, compressible mixing layer subject to a large favorable streamwise pressure gradient. The boundary-layer equations are solved coupled with both the $k$-$\omega$ and SST turbulence models. A compressible extension of the flamelet progress variable method has been proposed and tested for use with large eddy simulations or Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analyses of the burning of methane in pure air and vitiated air; the latter being particularly relevant in turbine burner scenarios. Effects of the level of detail of the reaction mechanism on the sub-grid and resolved-scale computations are studied. A comparison is made with results obtained using a simplified one-step reaction. The numerical results employing the flamelet model with the more detailed reaction mechanism show faster chemistry, significantly reduced peak temperatures and stronger sensitivity to pressure. Vitiated air flames are found to be dominated by unstable solutions, resulting in a weak flame with substantially lower peak temperature and impeded development, struggling to persist without quenching., Comment: 35 pages, 17 figures. High Energy Physics - Experiment ,Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
The LHCb collaboration measures production of the exotic hadron $\chi_{c1}$(3872) in proton-nucleus collisions for the first time. Comparison with the charmonium state $\psi$(2$S$) suggests that the exotic $\chi_{c1}$(3872) experiences different dynamics in the nuclear medium than conventional hadrons, and comparison with data from proton-proton collisions indicates that the presence of the nucleus may modify $\chi_{c1}$(3872) production rates. This is the first measurement of the nuclear modification factor of an exotic hadron., Comment: All figures and tables, along with any supplementary material and additional information, are available at https://cern.ch/lhcbproject/Publications/p/LHCb-PAPER-2023-026.html (LHCb public pages)

It is a folklore result in arithmetic quantum chaos that quantum unique ergodicity on the modular surface with an effective rate of convergence follows from subconvex bounds for certain triple product $L$-functions. The physical space manifestation of this result, namely the equidistribution of mass of Hecke-Maass cusp forms, was proven to follow from subconvexity by Watson, whereas the phase space manifestation of quantum unique ergodicity has only previously appeared in the literature for Eisenstein series via work of Jakobson. We detail the analogous phase space result for Hecke-Maass cusp forms. The proof relies on the Watson-Ichino triple product formula together with a careful analysis of certain archimedean integrals of Whittaker functions., Comment: 31 pages

Astrophysics - Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics - Abstract
Networks of ground stations designed to transmit and receive at optical wavelengths through the atmosphere offer an opportunity to provide on-demand, high-bandwidth, secure communications with spacecraft in Earth orbit and beyond. This work describes the operation and activities of current Free Space Optical Communication (FSOC) ground stations in Germany and Australasia. In Germany, FSOC facilities are located at the Oberpfaffenhofen campus of the Deutsches Zentrum fur Luft- und Raumfahrt (German Aerospace Center, DLR), the Laser-Bodenstation in Trauen (Responsive Space Cluster Competence Center, DLR), and the Research Center Space of the University of the Bundeswehr Munich in Neubiberg. The DLR also operates a ground station in Almeria, Spain as part of the European Optical Nucleus Network. The Australasian Optical Ground Station Network (AOGSN) is a proposed network of 0.5 -- 0.7m class optical telescopes located across Australia and New Zealand. The development and progress for each node of the AOGSN is reported, along with optimisation of future site locations based on cloud cover analysis., Comment: 17 pages, 12 Figures, Submitted to International Journal of Satellite Communications and Networking, Special Issue on Optical Space Communications

Cancer remains a global challenge due to its growing clinical and economic burden. Its uniquely personal manifestation, which makes treatment difficult, has fuelled the quest for personalized treatment strategies. Thus, genomic profiling is increasingly becoming part of clinical diagnostic panels. Effective use of such panels requires accurate drug response prediction (DRP) models, which are challenging to build due to limited labelled patient data. Previous methods to address this problem have used various forms of transfer learning. However, they do not explicitly model the variable length sequential structure of the list of mutations in such diagnostic panels. Further, they do not utilize auxiliary information (like patient survival) for model training. We address these limitations through a novel transformer based method, which surpasses the performance of state-of-the-art DRP models on benchmark data. We also present the design of a treatment recommendation system (TRS), which is currently deployed at the National University Hospital, Singapore and is being evaluated in a clinical trial.

The comparison of optical reference frequency signals over free-space optical links is limited by the relative motion between local and remote sites. For ground to low earth orbit comparison, the expected Doppler shift and Doppler rate typically reach 4 GHz at 100 MHz/s, which prevents the narrow-band detection required to compare optical frequencies at the highest levels of stability. We demonstrate a system capable of optical frequency comparison in the presence of these significant Doppler shifts, using an electro-optic phase modulator with an actuation bandwidth of 10 GHz, which will enable ground-to-space frequency comparison. This system was demonstrated over a retro-reflected drone link, with a maximum line-of-sight velocity of 15 m/s and Doppler shift of 19 MHz at a Doppler rate of 1 MHz/s. The best fractional frequency stability obtained was 7E-18 at an integration time of 5s. These results are an important step toward ground to low earth orbit optical frequency comparison, providing a scalable terrestrial test bed., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Each medical segmentation task should be considered with a specific AI algorithm based on its scenario so that the most accurate prediction model can be obtained. The most popular algorithms in medical segmentation, 3D U-Net and its variants, can directly implement the task of lung trachea segmentation, but its failure to consider the special tree-like structure of the trachea suggests that there is much room for improvement in its segmentation accuracy. Therefore, a research gap exists because a great amount of state-of-the-art DL algorithms are vanilla 3D U-Net structures, which do not introduce the various performance-enhancing modules that come with special natural image modality in lung airway segmentation. In this paper, we proposed two different network structures Branch-Level U-Net (B-UNet) and Branch-Level CE-UNet (B-CE-UNet) which are based on U-Net structure and compared the prediction results with the same dataset. Specially, both of the two networks add branch loss and central line loss to learn the feature of fine branch endings of the airways. Uncertainty estimation algorithms are also included to attain confident predictions and thereby, increase the overall trustworthiness of our whole model. In addition, predictions of the lung trachea based on the maximum connectivity rate were calculated and extracted during post-processing for segmentation refinement and pruning.

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
The ratio of branching fractions between $B^{0} \rightarrow J/\psi \pi^{0}$ and $B^{+} \rightarrow J/\psi K^{*+}$ decays is measured with proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb$^{-1}$. The measured value is $\frac{\mathcal{B}_{B^{0} \rightarrow J/\psi \pi^{0}}}{\mathcal{B}_{B^{+} \rightarrow J/\psi K^{*+}}} = (1.153 \pm 0.053 \pm 0.048 ) \times 10^{-2}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The branching fraction for $B^{0} \rightarrow J/\psi \pi^{0}$ decays is determined using the branching fraction of the normalisation channel, resulting in $\mathcal{B}_{B^{0} \rightarrow J/\psi \pi^{0}} = (1.670 \pm 0.077 \pm 0.069 \pm 0.095) \times 10^{-5}$, where the last uncertainty corresponds to that of the external input. This result is consistent with the current world average value and competitive with the most precise single measurement to date., Comment: All figures and tables, along with any supplementary material and additional information, are available at https://cern.ch/lhcbproject/Publications/p/LHCb-PAPER-2023-041.html (LHCb public pages)

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
The first observation of the $B_c^+ \to J/\psi \pi^+ \pi^0$ decay is reported with high significance using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9fb$^{-1}$, collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV. The ratio of its branching fraction relative to the $B_c^+ \to J/\psi \pi^+$ channel is measured to be $$ \frac{ {\cal{B}}( B_c^+ \to J/\psi \pi^+\pi^0 ) } { {\cal{B}}( B_c^+ \to J/\psi \pi^+ ) } = 2.80 \pm 0.15 \pm 0.11 \pm 0.16 \,, $$ where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third related to imprecise knowledge of the branching fractions for $B^+ \to J/\psi K^{*+}$ and $B^+ \to J/\psi K^+$ decays, which are used to determine the $\pi^0$ detection efficiency. The $\pi^+\pi^0$ mass spectrum is found to be consistent with the dominance of an intermediate $\rho^+$ contribution in accordance with a model based on QCD factorisation., Comment: 30 pages, 6 figures. Astrophysics - Earth and Planetary Astrophysics - Abstract
Impacts from icy and rocky bodies have helped shape the composition of solar system objects, for example the Earth-Moon system, or the recent impact of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 with Jupiter. It is likely that such impacts also shape the composition of exoplanetary systems. Here we investigate how cometary impacts might affect the atmospheric composition/chemistry of hot Jupiters, which are prime targets for characterisation. We introduce a parametrised cometary impact model that includes thermal ablation and pressure driven breakup, which we couple with the 1D `radiative-convective' atmospheric model ATMO, including disequilibrium chemistry. We use this model to investigate a wide range of impactor masses and compositions, including those based on observations of Solar System comets, and interstellar ices (with JWST). We find that even a small impactor (R = 2.5 km) can lead to significant short-term changes in the atmospheric chemistry, including a factor $>10$ enhancement in H$_2$O, CO, CO$_2$ abundances, and atmospheric opacity more generally, and the near complete removal of observable hydrocarbons, such as CH$_4$, from the upper atmosphere. These effects scale with the change in atmospheric C/O ratio and metallicity. Potentially observable changes are possible for a body that has undergone significant/continuous bombardment, such that the global atmospheric chemistry has been impacted. Our works reveals that cometary impacts can significantly alter or pollute the atmospheric composition/chemistry of hot Jupiters. These changes have the potential to mute/break the proposed link between atmospheric C/O ratio and planet formation location relative to key snowlines in the natal protoplanetary disc., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Astrophysics - Solar and Stellar Astrophysics - Abstract
Nanoflares are thought to be one of the prime candidates that can heat the solar corona to its multi-million kelvin temperature. Individual nanoflares are difficult to detect with the present generation instruments, however their presence can be inferred by comparing simulated nanoflare-heated plasma emissions with the observed emission. Using HYDRAD coronal loop simulations, we model the emission from an X-ray bright point (XBP) observed by the Marshall Grazing Incidence X-ray Spectrometer (MaGIXS), along with nearest-available observations from the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) onboard Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and X-Ray Telescope (XRT) onboard Hinode observatory. The length and magnetic field strength of the coronal loops are derived from the linear-force-free extrapolation of the observed photospheric magnetogram by Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) onboard SDO. Each loop is assumed to be heated by random nanoflares, whose magnitude and frequency are determined by the loop length and magnetic field strength. The simulation results are then compared and matched against the measured intensity from AIA, XRT, and MaGIXS. Our model results indicate the observed emissions from the XBP under study could be well matched by a distribution of nanoflares with average delay times 1500 s to 3000 s, which suggest that the heating is dominated by high-frequency events. Further, we demonstrate the high sensitivity of MaGIXS and XRT to diagnose the heating frequency using this method, while AIA passbands are found to be the least sensitive., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal (ApJ)

Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
Antimony selenide (Sb2Se3) is at the forefront of an emerging class of sustainable photovoltaic materials. Despite notable developments over the past decade, the light-to-electricity conversion efficiency of Sb2Se3 has reached a plateau of ~10%. Is this an intrinsic limitation of the material or is there scope to rival the success of metal halide perovskite solar cells? Here we assess the trap-limited conversion efficiency of Sb2Se3. First-principles defect analysis of the hole and electron capture rates for point defects demonstrates the critical role of vacancies as active recombination centres. We predict an upper limit of 25% efficiency in Sb2Se3 grown under optimal equilibrium conditions where the concentrations of charged vacancies are minimised. We further reveal how the detrimental effect of Se vacancies can be reduced by extrinsic oxygen passivation, highlighting a pathway to achieve high-performance metal selenide solar cells close to the thermodynamic limit.

Observations of disks with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) allow us to map the chemical makeup of nearby protoplanetary disks with unprecedented spatial resolution and sensitivity. The typical outer Class II disk observed with ALMA is one with an elevated C/O ratio and a lack of oxygen-bearing complex organic molecules, but there are now some interesting exceptions: three transition disks around Herbig Ae stars all show oxygen-rich gas traced via the unique detections of the molecules SO and CH3OH. We present the first results of an ALMA line survey at 337 to 357 GHz of such disks and focus this paper on the first Herbig Ae disk to exhibit this chemical signature - HD 100546. In these data, we detect 19 different molecules including NO, SO and CH3OCHO (methyl formate). We also make the first tentative detections of H213CO and 34SO in protoplanetary disks. Multiple molecular species are detected in rings, which are, surprisingly, all peaking just beyond the underlying millimeter continuum ring at 200 au. This result demonstrates a clear connection between the large dust distribution and the chemistry in this flat outer disk. We discuss the physical and/or chemical origin of these sub-structures in relation to ongoing planet formation in the HD 100546 disk. We also investigate how similar and/or different the molecular make up of this disk is to other chemically well-characterised Herbig Ae disks. The line-rich data we present motivates the need for more ALMA line surveys to probe the observable chemistry in Herbig Ae systems which offer unique insight into the composition of disk ices, including complex organic molecules., Comment: Accepted to AJ, 25 pages, 11 figures
