HISTORICAL linguistics , *CORPORA , *CONCORD , *QUANTITATIVE research ,BRITISH history - Abstract
This paper makes the case for using historical corpora to assess questions of sociolinguistic typology. A full account of any contact‐induced change will need to establish what the linguistic innovation in question was, who was in contact, where and when the contact took place and how the change happened, both at the individual level and at the population level. The historical corpus approach complements other methods by narrowing down the where and the when, allowing us to develop a clearer picture of how the change diffused. In support of our approach, we present three case studies of potential morphosyntactic simplification using quantitative evidence gleaned from historical corpora: the loss of number concord in the history of English, change in the null‐subject system(s) of Latin American Spanish and reduction of the case system in the history of Balkan Slavic. All three cases allow us to test theoretical predictions and uncover new influencing factors in a way that would be impossible without fine‐grained quantitative corpus research. HISTORICAL linguistics ,LINGUISTIC typology ,VARIATION in language ,PERSPECTIVE (Linguistics) - Abstract
This document is a collection of contributions from historical linguists discussing the current state and future aims of diachronic linguistics. The authors highlight the use of Bayesian phylogenetic methods in linguistic phylogenetics and reconstruction, as well as the importance of interdisciplinary perspectives and incorporating insights from other fields. The document also explores the progress and challenges in diachronic generative syntax, the potential for collaboration between dialect geographers, sociolinguists, and historical linguists, and the use of parsed corpora and naturalistic data in studying diachronic syntax. Additionally, it discusses the role of experimental linguistics in evaluating phonetic and phonological plausibility. The text emphasizes the importance of typological observations, experimental work, and further research in understanding language change. [Extracted from the article]

Despite the high cost of vaccination programmes, conventional methods to evaluate vaccine uptake are often impractical and costly. More recently, molecular-based testing of poultry dust has been used to monitor the "take" of Marek's disease virus and infectious laryngotracheitis virus (ILTV) live vaccines. This study aimed to provide proof-of-concept for detecting other poultry pathogens by using molecular detection of vaccine microorganisms in poultry dust of vaccinated flocks. Dust and choanal cleft and cloacal swabs were collected from chickens vaccinated against avian encephalomyelitis virus (AEV), fowlpox virus (FPV), Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) and Mycoplasma synoviae (MS) using live vaccines in an experimental flock. Dust samples were collected weekly from 5 commercial breeder or layer flocks from day-old up to 25 weeks of age. These flocks were vaccinated against Newcastle disease virus (NDV), infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV), ILTV, fowl adenovirus (FAdV), MG and MS. Samples were tested for nucleic acids of these microorganisms by PCR or reverse transcriptase PCR. Genomes of all targeted vaccines were detected in dust samples from the experimental and commercial flocks except for FPV, which was detected only in the experimental flock. FAdV was detected in unvaccinated commercial flocks. These findings suggest that PCR detection of target organisms in dust samples has potential as a relatively simple and inexpensive population-level test to monitor vaccine take and/or pathogen status in chicken flocks. Further studies comparing the detection of each of these microorganisms in poultry dust with individual birds samples are required to validate this approach.

Ophthalmology - Abstract
Disease of the cornea is the third leading cause of blindness worldwide. Corneal graft surgery is one of the most successful forms of solid organ transplantations in humans, with ever-increasing developments in surgical technique. To date, approximately 4504 corneal transplants are performed in the United Kingdom each year. While full thickness transplantation was the most commonly performed keratoplasty over the last few decades, selective lamellar transplantation of the diseased layers of the cornea has been universally adopted. This comprehensive review aims to provide an updated synthesis on different types of corneal transplantations, their treatment outcomes, and the associated complications of each procedure in both adult and paediatric population. In addition, we also present an up-to-date summary of the emerging therapeutic approaches that have the potential to reduce the demand for donor-dependent keratoplasty.

Infectious laryngotracheitis virus (ILTV) DNA has been detected in blood fractions, but the cell phenotype with which the virus is associated is unknown. This study investigated the presence of ILTV antigen in peripheral blood cells of six acutely ILTV-infected chickens (5 or 9 days post ocular inoculation with a virulent isolate) and three sham-inoculated chickens using immunofluorescent staining. Blood fractions were separated by Ficoll-Paque density gradient centrifugation, and smears were prepared from erythrocyte and leukocyte fractions. The smears were stained for ILTV glycoprotein E and the leukocyte markers CD4, CD8, Bu-1 (B cell), KUL01 (monocyte/macrophage), TCRγδ, and TCRαβ/Vβ

In this paper we investigate the place of origin of the change from Jespersen's Cycle stage II--bipartite ne + not--to stage III, not alone. We use the LAEME corpus to investigate the dialectal distribution in more detail, finding that the change must have begun in Northern and Eastern England. A strong effect of region and time period can be clearly observed, with certain linguistic factors also playing a role. We attribute the early onset of the change to contact with Scandinavian: North Germanic is known to have undergone Jespersen's Cycle earlier in its history, and the geographical distribution of early English stage HI fits neatly with the earlier boundaries of the Danelaw. Keywords: Middle English; negation; dialectology; language contact; corpus linguistics, 1. Introduction As is well known, English during its history has undergone the cyclical development that has since Dahl (1979) been known as Jespersen's Cycle. (1) The inherited Germanic preverbal [...]

- Abstract
Non-ischemic priapism (NiP) is painless partial tumescence caused by genital trauma and the formation of intracorporal arterio-venous fistula (AVF). This retrospective study aims to determine the long-term erectile function (EF) after NiP and to correlate this with colour doppler ultrasound (CDUS) parameters in 25 patients. EF was assessed by IIEF domain A questionnaire and CDUS parameters (mean velocity (MV), peak systolic velocity (PSV), end diastolic velocity (EDV) and Resistive Index (RI)) at diagnosis and follow up. At a median follow-up of 24 months: 16 men had normal EF (64%) with median IIEF score 29; nine had erectile dysfunction (ED) (36%) with a median IIEF-EF score 17. Raised MV and EDV on late follow-up CDUS traces demonstrated a statistically significant correlation with developing ED: median MV 5.3cm/sec vs 2.95cm/sec and median EDV 4.0cm/sec vs 0cm/sec in patients with ED compared to those with normal EF p

Context The sheep and wool industry is an important and established primary production entity for Australia. Specialised tertiary education in the field of sheep and wool is pivotal to the advancement of the industry. Sheep and wool education has evolved over time synchronously with changes in the presentation of tertiary teaching. The face-to-face teaching and 4-year specialised degree in animal and wool science has now developed into an online learning system, with individual units made available to students across the country. This is delivered using a hub institute, University of New England and spoke universities across Australia. Aims The study evaluated the development and delivery of the hub and spoke method of tertiary education in sheep and wool science. Methods The data for this study comprised routine information gathered during university enrolment and specific student survey data from two questionnaires. The first questionnaire was an annual (2010–2017) survey of enrolled students (n = 289) and the second questionnaire was a survey of graduates from 2012 to 2015 (n = 128) from sheep and wool science. Key results Student numbers studying sheep and wool science in the hub and spoke program have increased three and a half fold in 10 years. The employment success of students studying the sheep and wool units is over 50%. Conclusions Utilising a hub and spoke model for online education delivery allows one university to specialise in a specific curriculum that can be offered across multi-institutions. Implications The tertiary training package, developed by the sheep and wool industry, has provided an estimated 400 graduates into the industry in 10 years.

Background A major focus of research on the gut microbiota of poultry has been to define signatures of a healthy gut and identify microbiota components that correlate with feed conversion. However, there is a high variation in individual gut microbiota profiles and their association with performance. Population level samples such as dust and pooled excreta could be useful to investigate bacterial signatures associated with productivity at the flock-level. This study was designed to investigate the bacterial signatures of high and low-performing commercial meat chicken farms in dust and pooled excreta samples. Poultry house dust and fresh pooled excreta were collected at days 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35 of age from 8 farms of two Australian integrator companies and 389 samples assessed by 16S ribosomal RNA gene amplicon sequencing. The farms were ranked as low (n = 4) or high performers (n = 4) based on feed conversion rate corrected by body weight. Results Permutational analysis of variance based on Bray–Curtis dissimilarities using abundance data for bacterial community structure results showed that company explained the highest variation in the bacterial community structure in excreta (R2 = 0.21, p = 0.001) while age explained the highest variation in the bacterial community structure in dust (R2 = 0.13, p = 0.001). Farm performance explained the least variation in the bacterial community structure in both dust (R2 = 0.03, p = 0.001) and excreta (R2 = 0.01, p = 0.001) samples. However, specific bacterial taxa were found to be associated with high and low performance in both dust and excreta. The bacteria taxa associated with high-performing farms in dust or excreta found in this study were Enterococcus and Candidatus Arthromitus whereas bacterial taxa associated with low-performing farms included Nocardia, Lapillococcus, Brachybacterium, Ruania, Dietzia, Brevibacterium, Jeotgalicoccus, Corynebacterium and Aerococcus. Conclusions Dust and excreta could be useful for investigating bacterial signatures associated with high and low performance in commercial poultry farms. Further studies on a larger number of farms are needed to determine if the bacterial signatures found in this study are reproducible.

The tokamak à configuration variable (TCV) continues to leverage its unique shaping capabilities, flexible heating systems and modern control system to address critical issues in preparation for ITER and a fusion power plant. For the 2019–20 campaign its configurational flexibility has been enhanced with the installation of removable divertor gas baffles, its diagnostic capabilities with an extensive set of upgrades and its heating systems with new dual frequency gyrotrons. The gas baffles reduce coupling between the divertor and the main chamber and allow for detailed investigations on the role of fuelling in general and, together with upgraded boundary diagnostics, test divertor and edge models in particular. The increased heating capabilities broaden the operational regime to include T e/T i ∼ 1 and have stimulated refocussing studies from L-mode to H-mode across a range of research topics. ITER baseline parameters were reached in type-I ELMy H-modes and alternative regimes with ‘small’ (or no) ELMs explored. Most prominently, negative triangularity was investigated in detail and confirmed as an attractive scenario with H-mode level core confinement but an L-mode edge. Emphasis was also placed on control, where an increased number of observers, actuators and control solutions became available and are now integrated into a generic control framework as will be needed in future devices. The quantity and quality of results of the 2019–20 TCV campaign are a testament to its successful integration within the European research effort alongside a vibrant domestic programme and international collaborations.

openaire: EC/H2020/633053/EU//EUROfusion Funding Information: This work was partially funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation under projects nos. PID2019-108377RB-C31 and PID2019-108377RB-C32. This work has been carried out within the framework of the EUROfusion Consortium, funded by the European Union via the Euratom Research and Training Programme (grant agreement no. 101052200 — EUROfusion). Views and opinions expressed are however those of the authors only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or the European Commission. Neither the European Union nor the European Commission can be held responsible for them. Publisher Copyright: © 2022, Springer Nature Limited. In nuclear fusion reactors, plasmas are heated to very high temperatures of more than 100 million kelvin and, in so-called tokamaks, they are confined by magnetic fields in the shape of a torus. Light nuclei, such as deuterium and tritium, undergo a fusion reaction that releases energy, making fusion a promising option for a sustainable and clean energy source. Tokamak plasmas, however, are prone to disruptions as a result of a sudden collapse of the system terminating the fusion reactions. As disruptions lead to an abrupt loss of confinement, they can cause irreversible damage to present-day fusion devices and are expected to have a more devastating effect in future devices. Disruptions expected in the next-generation tokamak, ITER, for example, could cause electromagnetic forces larger than the weight of an Airbus A380. Furthermore, the thermal loads in such an event could exceed the melting threshold of the most resistant state-of-the-art materials by more than an order of magnitude. To prevent disruptionsor at least mitigate their detrimental effects, empirical models obtained with artificial intelligence methods, of which an overview is given here, are commonly employed to predict their occurrence—and ideally give enough time to introduce counteracting measures.

- Abstract
The scattering of millimeter-wave beams from electron density fluctuations and the associated beam broadening are experimentally demonstrated. Using a dedicated setup, instantaneous deflection and (de-)focusing of the beam due to density blobs on the beam path are shown to agree with full-wave simulations. The detected time-averaged wave power transmitted through the turbulent plasma is reproduced by the radiative-transfer model implemented in the WKBeam code, which predicts a ∼50% turbulence-induced broadening of the beam cross-section. The role of core turbulence for the considered geometry is highlighted.

The beams of fast runaway electrons (RE), which are often produced during tokamak discharges, are particularly dangerous and can induce serious damages of the vacuum vessel and internal components of the machine. The proper and fast diagnostics of RE beams is essential for controlling the discharge, e.g., by early mitigation of disruptions and potentially dangerous RE beams. The diagnostics of RE beams is usually based on measurements of the radiation emitted either by these electrons, or as a result of their interactions with plasma and/or vessel walls. Such a radiation is usually recorded by the means of probes placed outside the vacuum vessel. The method developed by our team is based on the probe located inside the vacuum vessel. The probe can be used to detect highly localized RE bunches and to determine their spatial and temporal characteristics. During last few years, the NCBJ team have developed and used the RE diagnostics based on the Cherenkov effect observed in diamond radiators coupled with fast photomultipliers. During the investigated discharges, the probe was inserted into the vacuum vessel, and its head was placed at the plasma edge, where fast RE are expected. A correlation between signals recorded using our probes and other diagnostics, e.g., hard x-ray signals, was also studied. In this paper, we present recent results of the RE measurements by means of Cherenkov probes, which were performed in the COMPASS and TCV tokamaks.

Significance Statement: Granulomatosis with polyangitis (GPA) is a systemic necrotizing vasculitis comprising of inflammation of small and medium-sized vessels. 1 It typically presents with involvement of the upper and lower airways as well as the kidneys. If left untreated, end-organ damage may occur. Hematological investigations typically demonstrate the presence of antinuclear cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA). 2 Here, we discuss an unusual presentation of ANCA negative GPA, presenting initially with nasal symptoms. OBJECTIVES To study the natural history of renal oncocytomas and address indications for intervention by determining how growth is associated with renal function over time, the reasons for surgery and ablation, and disease-specific survival. PATIENTS AND METHODS The study was conducted in a retrospective cohort of consecutive patients with renal oncocytoma on active surveillance reviewed at the Specialist Centre for Kidney Cancer at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust (2012 to 2019). Comparison between groups was performed using Mann-Whitney U-tests and chi-squared tests. A mixed-effects model with a random intercept for patient was used to study the longitudinal association between tumour size and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). RESULTS Longitudinal data from 98 patients with 101 lesions were analysed. Most patients were men (68.3%) and the median (interquartile range [IQR]) age was 69 (13) years. The median (IQR) follow-up was 29 (26) months. Most lesions were small renal masses, and 24% measured over 4 cm. Over half (64.4%) grew at a median (IQR) rate of 2 (4) mm per year. No association was observed between tumour size and eGFR over time (P = 0.871). Nine lesions (8.9%) were subsequently treated. Two deaths were reported, neither were related to the diagnosis of renal oncocytoma. CONCLUSION Natural history data from the largest active surveillance cohort of renal oncocytomas to date show that renal function does not seem to be negatively impacted by growing oncocytomas, and confirms clinical outcomes are excellent after a median follow-up of over 2 years. Active surveillance should be considered the 'gold standard' management of renal oncocytomas up to 7cm.

The Cambodian government is attempting to mobilise government, donor and private sector funding to implement a coordinated FMD vaccination program (FMDVP). A necessary first step is to convince the farmers of the benefits of participating in and potentially financially supporting this program. Information was collected from 300 farmers in order to estimate the on-farm benefits and costs of their participation in an FMDVP. Implementing a successful vaccination program is difficult, and farmers understand from previous experience that there may be institutional, social, technical and financial constraints which limit its success. A benefit-cost analysis needs to take into account that outbreaks do not occur every year, not all cattle will be successfully vaccinated, not all sick animals successfully treated and sometimes sick animals simply sold. This study sensitises these variables in order to give a realistic estimation of the farmer participation benefits in an FMDVP. A general result is that it is worthwhile for farmers to participate in the FMDVP if there are average annual outbreaks, or at least two major outbreaks, in the ensuing five years. However, the results are influenced by the interaction of vaccination success and treatment success and coverage. Ineffective coverage and poor treatment of sick animals reduce the benefits of an FMDVP. It is also important that farmers do not sell sick stock and, if they do, that they are able to breed replacements rather than purchase replacements. There are many factors in the smallholder cattle farming system that will influence the success of an FMDVP; farmers will only choose to participate if they can be convinced of the short and long-term economic benefits.

Polycythaemia vera (PV) is a clonal proliferative disorder of the bone marrow characterised by autonomous haematopoiesis, which results in a panmyelosis in the peripheral blood. It is typically characterised by an acquired mutation in JAK-2 V617F. Progression to myelofibrosis (MF), characterised by worsening cytopenias and the development of constitutional symptoms, is seen in up to 10% of cases. Extramedullary haematopoiesis (EMH) in the spleen is a common finding in myelofibrotic transformation, but elsewhere in the body it is extremely unusual. We report the case of a 69-year-old male whose PV progressed to secondary MF and who presented with compression of the thoracic spinal cord directly as a result of EMH. Cytogenetic and molecular findings in the bone marrow were in keeping with evolving myeloid disease. He was managed by surgical laminectomy with an excellent outcome. Extramedullary haematopoiesis may be seen in both PV and on transformation to MF. This very rare complication should be borne in mind when managing patients with myeloproliferative disorders.

Population-level sampling based on qPCR detection of infectious laryngotracheitis virus (ILTV) in poultry dust can be used to assess ILT vaccination outcomes following mass administration in drinking water. We report on the field application of this approach to assess the success of vaccine administration and its use in ILT outbreak control in meat chickens. In Study 1, dust samples were collected from 26 meat chicken flocks at 0, 4, 7, 14, and 21 days post drinking water vaccination (DPV) given between 7 to 13 days of age with the Serva or A20 live attenuated ILT vaccines. Unexpectedly, ILTV DNA was detected in dust samples collected prior to vaccination in 22/26 flocks. Typing revealed that the detected ILTV was different from the vaccine virus. To determine whether the detected ILTV DNA was from active infection or carryover of a noninfectious virus, Study 2 was implemented in 14 additional flocks with dust samples collected at 0, 7, 14, and 21 DPV and tracheal swabs collected from 15 birds/flock at 0 and 21 DPV. The results indicated that there was active infection with ILTV in those flocks before vaccination. This approach contributed to a statewide control program resulting in the eradication of ILT from South Australia as confirmed by negative ILTV test results for dust samples from 50 flocks and the absence of clinical ILT. These findings show that ILTV infection prior to vaccination is common in outbreak situations and that dust samples must be collected at 0 and 7 DPV for meaningful interpretation of vaccination outcomes and ILTV status. Comparatively low-cost dust testing during an outbreak, coupled with typing information, greatly assisted with decision making and control strategies during a major outbreak, including confirmation of the absence of infection in the final stages.

Urology - Abstract
To report the management outcomes of men with ≤20-mm small testicular masses (STMs) and to identify clinical and histopathological factors associated with malignancy.A retrospective analysis of men managed at a single centre between January 2010 and December 2020 with a STM ≤20 mm in size was performed.Overall, 307 men with a median (interquartile range [IQR]) age of 36 (30-44) years were included. Of these, 161 (52.4%), 82 (26.7%), 62 (20.2%) and 2 men (0.7%) underwent surveillance with interval ultrasonography (USS), primary excisional testicular biopsy (TBx) or primary radical orchidectomy (RO), or were discharged, respectively. The median (IQR) surveillance duration was 6 (3-18) months. The majority of men who underwent surveillance had lesions5 mm (59.0%) and no lesion vascularity (67.1%) on USS. Thirty-three (20.5%) men undergoing surveillance had a TBx based on changes on interval USS or patient choice; seven (21.2%) were found to be malignant. The overall rate of malignancy in the surveillance cohort was 4.3%. The majority of men who underwent primary RO had lesions ≥10 mm (85.5%) and the presence of vascularity (61.7%) on USS. Nineteen men (23.2%) who underwent primary TBx (median lesion size 6 mm) had a malignancy confirmed on biopsy and underwent RO. A total of 88 men (28.7%) underwent RO, and malignancy was confirmed in 73 (83.0%) of them. The overall malignancy rate in the whole STM cohort was 23.8%. Malignant RO specimens had significantly larger lesion sizes (median [IQR] 11 [8-15] mm, vs benign: median [IQR] 8 [5-10] mm; P = 0.04).Small testicular masses can be stratified and managed based on lesion size and USS features. The overall malignancy rate in men with an STM was 23.8% (4.3% in the surveillance group). Surveillance should be considered in lesions10 mm in size, with a TBx or frozen-section examination offered prior to RO in order to preserve testicular function.

Aim To evaluate the use of pre-cryoablation biopsy for small renal masses (SRMs) and the effects of increasing up take on histological results of treated SMRs. Method From 2015 to 2019, patients with sporadic T1N0M0 SRMs undergoing percutaneous, laparoscopic or open cryoablation from 14 European institutions within the European Registry For Renal Cryoablation (EuRECA) were included for the retrospective analysis. Univariate and multivariate logistic models were used to evaluate the trends, histological results and the factors influencing use of pre-cryoablation biopsy. Results 871 patients (Median [IQR] age, 69[14], 298 women) undergoing cryoablation were evaluated. The use of pre-cryoablation biopsy has significantly increased from 42% (65/156) in 2015 to 72% (88/122) in 2019 (p1 are factors associated with lower likelihood to not have received a pre-cryoablation biopsy (p Conclusion An increased use of pre-cryoablation biopsy was observed and cryoablation patients treated with a benign histology is more likely to have presented in periods where pre-cryoablation biopsy is not as prevalent. Comparative studies are needed to draw definitive conclusions on the effect of pre-cryoablation biopsy on SRM treatments.

Surgery - Abstract
Aim PAE (prostatic arterial embolisation) is a non-surgical, minimally invasive procedure used to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It is used to treat patients with moderate to severe lower urinary tract symptoms including those requiring long term urinary catheter placement and intermittent self-catheterisation. The incidence of urinary tract infection is greater in this group at baseline and the risk of infection as a complication of PAE is recognised in the literature. This study aimed to compare the clinical outcomes of PAE to those of TURP (transurethral resection of the prostate), the reference standard for BPH treatment. Method All patients who underwent PAE between 2019 to 2021 at a single centre were included in this retrospective study. Clinical outcomes of patients were also recorded including international prostate symptom score (IPSS) and urodynamic results. These were compared to TURP results provided in the UK ROPE study. Results 82% of patients experienced an improved IPSS after PAE, with a median reduction of 15 points, compared with a median reduction of 17 points with TURP. PAE caused a greater reduction in median prostate volume but proved to be less effective in improving urodynamic test results when compared to TURP. Conclusion While still clinically effective, PAE is less effective for treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms from BPH when compared to TURP.

Luke Michaels,1 Jay Richardson,1 Andrew Walkden,1,2 Fiona Carley1,2 1Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, Manchester, UK; 2Centre for Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences, Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences, University of Manchester, Manchester, UKCorrespondence: Andrew Walkden, Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, Oxford Road, Manchester, Greater Manchester, M13 9WL, UK, Tel +44 161-276-1234, Email walkdenandrew@gmail.comPurpose: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to drastic changes to the daily lives of those living in the United Kingdom. We hypothesized that the effect of the imposed lockdown on both behaviour and social interaction has the potential to influence the characteristics of microbial keratitis presenting locally to Manchester Royal Eye Hospital â a major tertiary eye centre in the UK.Methods: We conducted a retrospective case-note review of all positive corneal scrape cultures identified by our local microbiology laboratory during the year since the announcement of lockdown measures in the UK (23 March 2020 to 23 March 2021). Culture results were compared with previously collated, published âbaselineâ data from prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic (2004â 2019). Statistical analysis was undertaken, predominantly looking at the incidence of microbial keratitis and the variety of cultured pathogens. Results: A total of 6243 corneal scrape results were reviewed. Comparison of data between the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown did not show a significant change in the incidence of culture-positive microbial keratitis: mean annual positive samples during 2004â 2019 were 128 (35%) vs 91 (29%) during lockdown (P=0.096). No statistically significant shifts in the incidence of organism subtypes â fungi, acanthamoeba, Gram-positive bacteria, or Gram negative bacteria â were identified (P=0.196, 1, 0.366, and 0.087, respectively). Conclusion: Contrary to our hypothesis, our results suggest that the COVID-19 pandemic did not alter the incidence or characteristics of microbial keratitis presenting to Manchester Royal Eye Hospital in the year following the implementation of lockdown measures in the UK.Keywords: COVID-19, keratitis, microbiology, microbial keratitis
