Previous research has identified relationships between chemosensory reactivity and food neophobia in children. However, most studies have investigated this relationship using declarative data and without separately analysing smell and taste reactivity. Our first objective was to assess the relationships between smell and taste differential reactivity in toddlers (i.e. reactivity towards several stimuli), using experimental behavioural measurements. The second objective was to determine the relationships between smell (or taste) differential reactivity and food neophobia in toddlers, with the hypothesis that the more responsive a toddler was across food odours or tastes, the more neophobic s/he would be. An additional objective was to determine whether the potential relationships between smell (or taste) differential reactivity and food neophobia differ according to gender. One hundred and twenty-three toddlers aged from 20 to 22 months from the Opaline birth cohort (Observatory of Food Preferences in Infants and Children) were involved. A questionnaire was used to assess child's food neophobia. Toddlers' differential reactivity for smell (and for taste) was defined as the variability of behavioural responses over 8 odorants, and over the five basic tastes. Smell and taste differential reactivities were not correlated. Food neophobia scores were modestly but significantly positively correlated with smell differential reactivity but not with taste differential reactivity. When gender was considered, smell reactivity and neophobia were correlated only among boys. This indicates the need to study smell and taste reactivity separately to determine their associations with eating behaviours. This suggests that the rejection of novel foods in neophobic boys could be partly due to food odour. This finding is new and clearly requires further investigation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the optical zone power profile of the most commonly prescribed soft contact lenses to assess their potential impact on peripheral refractive error and hence myopia progression. Methods The optical power profiles of six single vision and ten multifocal contact lenses of five manufacturers in the powers −1.00 D, −3.00 D, and −6.00 D were measured using the SHSOphthalmic (Optocraft GmbH, Erlangen, Germany). Instrument repeatability was also investigated. Results Instrument repeatability was dependent on the distance from the optical centre, manifesting unreliable data for the central 1 mm of the optic zone. Single vision contact lens measurements of −6.00 D lenses revealed omafilcon A having the most negative spherical aberration, lotrafilcon A having the least. Somofilcon A had the highest minus power and lotrafilcon A the biggest deviation in positive direction, relative to their respective labelled powers. Negative spherical aberration occurred for almost all of the multifocal contact lenses, including the centre-distance designs etafilcon A bifocal and omafilcon A multifocal. Lotrafilcon B and balafilcon A seem to rely predominantly on the spherical aberration component to provide multifocality. Conclusions Power profiles of single vision soft contact lenses varied greatly, many having a negative spherical aberration profile that would exacerbate myopia. Some lens types and powers are affected by large intra-batch variability or power offsets of more than 0.25 dioptres. Evaluation of power profiles of multifocal lenses was derived that provides helpful information for prescribing lenses for presbyopes and progressing myopes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigated the prevalence of exercise-associated hyponatremia (EAH) in 25 male and 11 female open-water ultra-endurance swimmers participating in the 'Marathon-Swim' in Lake Zurich, Switzerland, covering a distance of 26.4 km. Changes in body mass, fat mass, skeletal muscle mass, total body water, urine specific gravity, plasma sodium concentration [Na] and haematocrit were determined. Two males (8%) and four females (36%) developed EAH where one female was symptomatic with plasma sodium [Na] of 127 mmol/L. Body mass and plasma [Na] decreased ( p < 0.05). The changes in body mass correlated in both male and female swimmers to post-race plasma [Na] ( r = −0.67, p = 0.0002 and r = −0.80, p = 0.0034, respectively) and changes in plasma [Na] ( r = −0.68, p = 0.0002 and r = −0.79, p = 0.0039, respectively). Fluid intake was neither associated with changes in body mass, post-race plasma [Na] or the change in plasma [Na]. Sodium intake showed no association with either the changes in plasma [Na] or post-race plasma [Na]. We concluded that the prevalence of EAH was greater in female than in male open-water ultra-endurance swimmers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The opportunistic food-borne gram-positive pathogen Listeria monocytogenes can exist as a free-living microorganism in the environment and grow in the cytoplasm of vertebrate and invertebrate cells following infection. The general stress response, controlled by the alternative sigma factor, σB, has an important role for bacterial survival both in the environment and during infection. We used quantitative real-time PCR analysis and immuno-blot analysis to examine σB expression during growth of L. monocytogenes EGD-e. Whole genome-based transcriptional profiling was used to identify sB-dependent genes at different growth phases. Results: We detected 105 σB-positively regulated genes and 111 genes which appeared to be under negative control of σB and validated 36 σB-positively regulated genes in vivo using a reporter gene fusion system. Conclusion: Genes comprising the σB regulon encode solute transporters, novel cell-wall proteins, universal stress proteins, transcriptional regulators and include those involved in osmoregulation, carbon metabolism, ribosome- and envelope-function, as well as virulence and niche-specific survival genes such as those involved in bile resistance and exclusion. Ten of the σB-positively regulated genes of L. monocytogenes are absent in L. innocua. A total of 75 σB-positively regulated listerial genes had homologs in B. subtilis, but only 33 have been previously described as being σB-regulated in B. subtilis even though both species share a highly conserved σB-dependent consensus sequence. This study investigated the effects of a safe driving competition facilitated by publicly-posted individual feedback. The turn-signal use, safety-belt use, and complete intersection stopping of 82 pizza deliverers were observed at two experimental and three control stores, as well as among the civilian population. After baseline observations, pizza deliverers received posted weekly individual feedback on their turn-signal use (at Store A) or complete intersection stops (at Store B). The deliverers' safe driving scores were posted individually on a vertical scale along with their names. Each week the deliverer with the highest average performance was rewarded with a free vehicle-maintenance coupon. Turn-signal use among drivers at Store A (n = 24) increased 22 percentage points from baseline to the intervention phase which was maintained into the withdrawal phase. Complete intersection stopping among drivers at Store B (n = 21) increased 17 percentage points from baseline to the intervention phase and was maintained into the withdrawal phase. Although the winners of the weekly competitions had the greatest increase in performance, non-winners also increased their instances of safe driving during the competition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: Colorectal cancer is a global issue with millions of patients in need for new treatment options. Surgical resection is often the first clinical intervention and can be, especially for primary tumours, curative. However, advanced tumours, recurrences, and metastases require drug treatment. Our aim was to compare material of primary tumours and corresponding metastases to draw conclusions from the first one to the latter. The feasibility of therapy prediction using the primary tumour material for the metastatic situation creates a time window for functional testing, which can realistically be integrated into the strict timeframe of clinical procedures. A reliable treatment recommendation, based on the tumour drug response, would improve treatment success in patients with metachronous metastases and spare them from unnecessary side effects of unsuccessful therapies. The prognosis of metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC) remains poor. Patients and physicians are in need of individual therapies and precise response predictions. We investigated the predictive capacity of primary tumour material for treatment response of metastases. Mutational landscapes of primary tumours and corresponding metastases of 10 CRC patients were compared. Cell line characteristics and chemosensitivity were investigated pairwise for primary and metastatic tumours of four patients. PDX models of one patient were treated in vivo for proof of concept. Driver mutations did not differ between primaries and metastases, while the latter accumulated additional mutations. In vitro chemosensitivity testing revealed no differences for responses to 5-FU and oxaliplatin between primary and metastatic cell lines. However, irinotecan response differed significantly: the majority of metastases-derived cell lines was less sensitive to irinotecan than their matching primary counterpart. Therapy recommendations based on these findings were compared to clinical treatment response and mostly in line with the predicted outcome. Therefore, primary tumour cell models seem to be a good tool for drug response testing and conclusion drawing for later metastases. With further data from tumour-derived cell models, such predictions could improve clinical treatment decisions, both recommending likely effective therapeutic options while excluding ineffective treatments.
