Sketch-based image retrieval (SBIR) associates hand-drawn sketches with their corresponding realistic images. In this study, we aim to tackle two major challenges of this task simultaneously: i) zero-shot, dealing with unseen categories, and ii) fine-grained, referring to intra-category instance-level retrieval. Our key innovation lies in the realization that solely addressing this cross-category and fine-grained recognition task from the generalization perspective may be inadequate since the knowledge accumulated from limited seen categories might not be fully valuable or transferable to unseen target categories. Inspired by this, in this work, we propose a dual-modal prompting CLIP (DP-CLIP) network, in which an adaptive prompting strategy is designed. Specifically, to facilitate the adaptation of our DP-CLIP toward unpredictable target categories, we employ a set of images within the target category and the textual category label to respectively construct a set of category-adaptive prompt tokens and channel scales. By integrating the generated guidance, DP-CLIP could gain valuable category-centric insights, efficiently adapting to novel categories and capturing unique discriminative clues for effective retrieval within each target category. With these designs, our DP-CLIP outperforms the state-of-the-art fine-grained zero-shot SBIR method by 7.3% in Acc.@1 on the Sketchy dataset. Meanwhile, in the other two category-level zero-shot SBIR benchmarks, our method also achieves promising performance.

Relation extraction (RE) aims to identify relations between entities mentioned in texts. Although large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated impressive in-context learning (ICL) abilities in various tasks, they still suffer from poor performances compared to most supervised fine-tuned RE methods. Utilizing ICL for RE with LLMs encounters two challenges: (1) retrieving good demonstrations from training examples, and (2) enabling LLMs exhibit strong ICL abilities in RE. On the one hand, retrieving good demonstrations is a non-trivial process in RE, which easily results in low relevance regarding entities and relations. On the other hand, ICL with an LLM achieves poor performance in RE while RE is different from language modeling in nature or the LLM is not large enough. In this work, we propose a novel recall-retrieve-reason RE framework that synergizes LLMs with retrieval corpora (training examples) to enable relevant retrieving and reliable in-context reasoning. Specifically, we distill the consistently ontological knowledge from training datasets to let LLMs generate relevant entity pairs grounded by retrieval corpora as valid queries. These entity pairs are then used to retrieve relevant training examples from the retrieval corpora as demonstrations for LLMs to conduct better ICL via instruction tuning. Extensive experiments on different LLMs and RE datasets demonstrate that our method generates relevant and valid entity pairs and boosts ICL abilities of LLMs, achieving competitive or new state-of-the-art performance on sentence-level RE compared to previous supervised fine-tuning methods and ICL-based methods., Comment: IJCAI 2024

Relation extraction (RE) is an important task that aims to identify the relationships between entities in texts. While large language models (LLMs) have revealed remarkable in-context learning (ICL) capability for general zero and few-shot learning, recent studies indicate that current LLMs still struggle with zero and few-shot RE. Previous studies are mainly dedicated to design prompt formats and select good examples for improving ICL-based RE. Although both factors are vital for ICL, if one can fundamentally boost the ICL capability of LLMs in RE, the zero and few-shot RE performance via ICL would be significantly improved. To this end, we introduce \textsc{Micre} (\textbf{M}eta \textbf{I}n-\textbf{C}ontext learning of LLMs for \textbf{R}elation \textbf{E}xtraction), a new meta-training framework for zero and few-shot RE where an LLM is tuned to do ICL on a diverse collection of RE datasets (i.e., learning to learn in context for RE). Through meta-training, the model becomes more effectively to learn a new RE task in context by conditioning on a few training examples with no parameter updates or task-specific templates at inference time, enabling better zero and few-shot task generalization. We experiment \textsc{Micre} on various LLMs with different model scales and 12 public RE datasets, and then evaluate it on unseen RE benchmarks under zero and few-shot settings. \textsc{Micre} delivers comparable or superior performance compared to a range of baselines including supervised fine-tuning and typical in-context learning methods. We find that the gains are particular significant for larger model scales, and using a diverse set of the meta-training RE datasets is key to improvements. Using image as prompts for 3D generation demonstrate particularly strong performances compared to using text prompts alone, for images provide a more intuitive guidance for the 3D generation process. In this work, we delve into the potential of using multiple image prompts, instead of a single image prompt, for 3D generation. Specifically, we build on ImageDream, a novel image-prompt multi-view diffusion model, to support multi-view images as the input prompt. Our method, dubbed MultiImageDream, reveals that transitioning from a single-image prompt to multiple-image prompts enhances the performance of multi-view and 3D object generation according to various quantitative evaluation metrics and qualitative assessments. Recently, integrating visual controls into text-to-image~(T2I) models, such as ControlNet method, has received significant attention for finer control capabilities. While various training-free methods make efforts to enhance prompt following in T2I models, the issue with visual control is still rarely studied, especially in the scenario that visual controls are misaligned with text prompts. In this paper, we address the challenge of ``Prompt Following With Visual Control" and propose a training-free approach named Mask-guided Prompt Following (MGPF). Object masks are introduced to distinct aligned and misaligned parts of visual controls and prompts. Meanwhile, a network, dubbed as Masked ControlNet, is designed to utilize these object masks for object generation in the misaligned visual control region. Further, to improve attribute matching, a simple yet efficient loss is designed to align the attention maps of attributes with object regions constrained by ControlNet and object masks. The efficacy and superiority of MGPF are validated through comprehensive quantitative and qualitative experiments.

Leveraging multi-view diffusion models as priors for 3D optimization have alleviated the problem of 3D consistency, e.g., the Janus face problem or the content drift problem, in zero-shot text-to-3D models. However, the 3D geometric fidelity of the output remains an unresolved issue; albeit the rendered 2D views are realistic, the underlying geometry may contain errors such as unreasonable concavities. In this work, we propose CorrespondentDream, an effective method to leverage annotation-free, cross-view correspondences yielded from the diffusion U-Net to provide additional 3D prior to the NeRF optimization process. We find that these correspondences are strongly consistent with human perception, and by adopting it in our loss design, we are able to produce NeRF models with geometries that are more coherent with common sense, e.g., more smoothed object surface, yielding higher 3D fidelity. This study introduces HQ-Edit, a high-quality instruction-based image editing dataset with around 200,000 edits. Unlike prior approaches relying on attribute guidance or human feedback on building datasets, we devise a scalable data collection pipeline leveraging advanced foundation models, namely GPT-4V and DALL-E 3. To ensure its high quality, diverse examples are first collected online, expanded, and then used to create high-quality diptychs featuring input and output images with detailed text prompts, followed by precise alignment ensured through post-processing. In addition, we propose two evaluation metrics, Alignment and Coherence, to quantitatively assess the quality of image edit pairs using GPT-4V. HQ-Edits high-resolution images, rich in detail and accompanied by comprehensive editing prompts, substantially enhance the capabilities of existing image editing models. For example, an HQ-Edit finetuned InstructPix2Pix can attain state-of-the-art image editing performance, even surpassing those models fine-tuned with human-annotated data. In recent decades, the vision community has witnessed remarkable progress in visual recognition, partially owing to advancements in dataset benchmarks. Notably, the established COCO benchmark has propelled the development of modern detection and segmentation systems. However, the COCO segmentation benchmark has seen comparatively slow improvement over the last decade. Originally equipped with coarse polygon annotations for thing instances, it gradually incorporated coarse superpixel annotations for stuff regions, which were subsequently heuristically amalgamated to yield panoptic segmentation annotations. These annotations, executed by different groups of raters, have resulted not only in coarse segmentation masks but also in inconsistencies between segmentation types. In this study, we undertake a comprehensive reevaluation of the COCO segmentation annotations. By enhancing the annotation quality and expanding the dataset to encompass 383K images with more than 5.18M panoptic masks, we introduce COCONut, the COCO Next Universal segmenTation dataset. COCONut harmonizes segmentation annotations across semantic, instance, and panoptic segmentation with meticulously crafted high-quality masks, and establishes a robust benchmark for all segmentation tasks. To our knowledge, COCONut stands as the inaugural large-scale universal segmentation dataset, verified by human raters. We report accretion-powered pulsations for the first time during thermonuclear bursts in hard X-rays, which were observed with Insight-HXMT in 2022 during the outburst of the accreting X-ray millisecond pulsar MAXI J1816-195. By stacking 73 bursts, we detected pulse profiles in 8-30 keV and 30-100 keV during bursts, which are identical to those obtained from the persistent (non-burst) emission. On average, no significant phase lag was observed between burst and persistent pulse profiles. In addition, we suggest that the interaction with burst photons can be used as a direct diagnostic to distinguish contributions from the hot plasma near polar caps and the corona around the accretion disk, which are highly degenerate in their spectral shapes., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

In the field of visual affordance learning, previous methods mainly used abundant images or videos that delineate human behavior patterns to identify action possibility regions for object manipulation, with a variety of applications in robotic tasks. However, they encounter a main challenge of action ambiguity, illustrated by the vagueness like whether to beat or carry a drum, and the complexities involved in processing intricate scenes. Moreover, it is important for human intervention to rectify robot errors in time. To address these issues, we introduce Self-Explainable Affordance learning (SEA) with embodied caption. This innovation enables robots to articulate their intentions and bridge the gap between explainable vision-language caption and visual affordance learning. Due to a lack of appropriate dataset, we unveil a pioneering dataset and metrics tailored for this task, which integrates images, heatmaps, and embodied captions. Furthermore, we propose a novel model to effectively combine affordance grounding with self-explanation in a simple but efficient manner. Extensive quantitative and qualitative experiments demonstrate our method's effectiveness.

The autologistic actor attribute model (ALAAM) is a model for social influence, derived from the more widely known exponential-family random graph model (ERGM). ALAAMs can be used to estimate parameters corresponding to multiple forms of social contagion associated with network structure and actor covariates. This work introduces ALAAMEE, open-source Python software for estimation, simulation, and goodness-of-fit testing for ALAAM models. ALAAMEE implements both the stochastic approximation and equilibrium expectation (EE) algorithms for ALAAM parameter estimation, including estimation from snowball sampled network data. It implements data structures and statistics for undirected, directed, and bipartite networks. We use a simulation study to assess the accuracy of the EE algorithm for ALAAM parameter estimation and statistical inference, and demonstrate the use of ALAAMEE with empirical examples using both small (fewer than 100 nodes) and large (more than 10 000 nodes) networks., Comment: Provisionally accepted for publication

Parameter-efficient fine-tuning for pre-trained Vision Transformers aims to adeptly tailor a model to downstream tasks by learning a minimal set of new adaptation parameters while preserving the frozen majority of pre-trained parameters. Striking a balance between retaining the generalizable representation capacity of the pre-trained model and acquiring task-specific features poses a key challenge. Currently, there is a lack of focus on guiding this delicate trade-off. In this study, we approach the problem from the perspective of Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) of pre-trained parameter matrices, providing insights into the tuning dynamics of existing methods. Building upon this understanding, we propose a Residual-based Low-Rank Rescaling (RLRR) fine-tuning strategy. This strategy not only enhances flexibility in parameter tuning but also ensures that new parameters do not deviate excessively from the pre-trained model through a residual design. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method achieves competitive performance across various downstream image classification tasks, all while maintaining comparable new parameters. We believe this work takes a step forward in offering a unified perspective for interpreting existing methods and serves as motivation for the development of new approaches that move closer to effectively considering the crucial trade-off mentioned above. Advances in bioimaging methods and hardware facilities have revolutionised the determination of numerous biological structures at atomic or near-atomic resolution. Among these developments, electron ptychography has recently attracted considerable attention because of its superior resolution, remarkable sensitivity to light elements, and high electron dose efficiency. Here, we introduce an innovative approach called multi-convergence-angle (MCA) ptychography, which can simultaneously enhance both contrast and resolution with continuous information transfer across a wide spectrum of spatial frequency. Our work provides feasibility of future applications of MCA-ptychography in providing high-quality two-dimensional images as input to three-dimensional reconstruction methods, thereby facilitating more accurate determination of biological structures.

Approximate nearest neighbor search (ANNS) on high-dimensional vectors has become a fundamental and essential component in various machine learning tasks. Prior research has shown that the distance comparison operation is the bottleneck of ANNS, which determines the query and indexing performance. To overcome this challenge, some novel methods have been proposed recently. The basic idea is to estimate the actual distance with fewer calculations, at the cost of accuracy loss. Inspired by this, we also propose that some classical techniques and deep learning models can also be adapted to this purpose. In this paper, we systematically categorize the techniques that have been or can be used to accelerate distance approximation. And to help the users understand the pros and cons of different techniques, we design a fair and comprehensive benchmark, Fudist implements these techniques with the same base index and evaluates them on 16 real datasets with several evaluation metrics. Designed as an independent and portable library, Fudist is orthogonal to the specific index structure and thus can be easily utilized in the current ANNS library to achieve significant improvements.

While neural rendering has demonstrated impressive capabilities in 3D scene reconstruction and novel view synthesis, it heavily relies on high-quality sharp images and accurate camera poses. Numerous approaches have been proposed to train Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) with motion-blurred images, commonly encountered in real-world scenarios such as low-light or long-exposure conditions. However, the implicit representation of NeRF struggles to accurately recover intricate details from severely motion-blurred images and cannot achieve real-time rendering. In contrast, recent advancements in 3D Gaussian Splatting achieve high-quality 3D scene reconstruction and real-time rendering by explicitly optimizing point clouds as Gaussian spheres. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach, named BAD-Gaussians (Bundle Adjusted Deblur Gaussian Splatting), which leverages explicit Gaussian representation and handles severe motion-blurred images with inaccurate camera poses to achieve high-quality scene reconstruction. Our method models the physical image formation process of motion-blurred images and jointly learns the parameters of Gaussians while recovering camera motion trajectories during exposure time. In our experiments, we demonstrate that BAD-Gaussians not only achieves superior rendering quality compared to previous state-of-the-art deblur neural rendering methods on both synthetic and real datasets but also enables real-time rendering capabilities. In this study, we address the intricate challenge of multi-task dense prediction, encompassing tasks such as semantic segmentation, depth estimation, and surface normal estimation, particularly when dealing with partially annotated data (MTPSL). The complexity arises from the absence of complete task labels for each training image. Given the inter-related nature of these pixel-wise dense tasks, our focus is on mining and capturing cross-task relationships. Existing solutions typically rely on learning global image representations for global cross-task image matching, imposing constraints that, unfortunately, sacrifice the finer structures within the images. Attempting local matching as a remedy faces hurdles due to the lack of precise region supervision, making local alignment a challenging endeavor. The introduction of Segment Anything Model (SAM) sheds light on addressing local alignment challenges by providing free and high-quality solutions for region detection. Leveraging SAM-detected regions, the subsequent challenge lies in aligning the representations within these regions. Diverging from conventional methods that directly learn a monolithic image representation, our proposal involves modeling region-wise representations using Gaussian Distributions. Aligning these distributions between corresponding regions from different tasks imparts higher flexibility and capacity to capture intra-region structures, accommodating a broader range of tasks. This innovative approach significantly enhances our ability to effectively capture cross-task relationships, resulting in improved overall performance in partially supervised multi-task dense prediction scenarios. Extensive experiments conducted on two widely used benchmarks underscore the superior effectiveness of our proposed method, showcasing state-of-the-art performance even when compared to fully supervised methods.

This paper explores the problem of continual learning (CL) of vision-language models (VLMs) in open domains, where the models need to perform continual updating and inference on a streaming of datasets from diverse seen and unseen domains with novel classes. Such a capability is crucial for various applications in open environments, e.g., AI assistants, autonomous driving systems, and robotics. Current CL studies mostly focus on closed-set scenarios in a single domain with known classes. Large pre-trained VLMs like CLIP have demonstrated superior zero-shot recognition ability, and a number of recent studies leverage this ability to mitigate catastrophic forgetting in CL, but they focus on closed-set CL in a single domain dataset. Open-domain CL of large VLMs is significantly more challenging due to 1) large class correlations and domain gaps across the datasets and 2) the forgetting of zero-shot knowledge in the pre-trained VLMs in addition to the knowledge learned from the newly adapted datasets. In this work we introduce a novel approach, termed CoLeCLIP, that learns an open-domain CL model based on CLIP. It addresses these challenges by a joint learning of a set of task prompts and a cross-domain class vocabulary. Extensive experiments on 11 domain datasets show that CoLeCLIP outperforms state-of-the-art methods for open-domain CL under both task- and class-incremental learning settings.

Segment Anything Model (SAM) has garnered significant attention in segmentation tasks due to their zero-shot generalization ability. However, a broader application of SAMs to real-world practice has been restricted by their low inference speed and high computational memory demands, which mainly stem from the attention mechanism. Existing work concentrated on optimizing the encoder, yet has not adequately addressed the inefficiency of the attention mechanism itself, even when distilled to a smaller model, which thus leaves space for further improvement. In response, we introduce SAM-Lightening, a variant of SAM, that features a re-engineered attention mechanism, termed Dilated Flash Attention. It not only facilitates higher parallelism, enhancing processing efficiency but also retains compatibility with the existing FlashAttention. Correspondingly, we propose a progressive distillation to enable an efficient knowledge transfer from the vanilla SAM without costly training from scratch. Experiments on COCO and LVIS reveal that SAM-Lightening significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in both run-time efficiency and segmentation accuracy. Specifically, it can achieve an inference speed of 7 milliseconds (ms) per image, for images of size 1024*1024 pixels, which is 30.1 times faster than the vanilla SAM and 2.1 times than the state-of-the-art. This paper presents a novel method to make statistical inferences for both the model support and regression coefficients in a high-dimensional logistic regression model. Our method is based on the repro samples framework, in which we conduct statistical inference by generating artificial samples mimicking the actual data-generating process. The proposed method has two major advantages. Firstly, for model support, we introduce the first method for constructing model confidence set in a high-dimensional setting and the proposed method only requires a weak signal strength assumption. Secondly, in terms of regression coefficients, we establish confidence sets for any group of linear combinations of regression coefficients. Our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method produces valid and small model confidence sets and achieves better coverage for regression coefficients than the state-of-the-art debiasing methods. Additionally, we analyze single-cell RNA-seq data on the immune response. Besides identifying genes previously proved as relevant in the literature, our method also discovers a significant gene that has not been studied before, revealing a potential new direction in understanding cellular immune response mechanisms.

Great efforts have been dedicated in recent years to explore practical applications for noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) computers, which is a fundamental and challenging problem in quantum computing. As one of the most promising methods, the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) has been extensively studied. In this paper, VQE is applied to solve portfolio optimization problems in finance by designing two hardware-efficient Dicke state ansatze that reach a maximum of 2n two-qubit gate depth and n^2/4 parameters, with n being the number of qubits used. Both ansatze are partitioning-friendly, allowing for the proposal of a highly scalable quantum/classical hybrid distributed computing (HDC) scheme. Combining simultaneous sampling, problem-specific measurement error mitigation, and fragment reuse techniques, we successfully implement the HDC experiments on the superconducting quantum computer Wu Kong with up to 55 qubits. The simulation and experimental results illustrate that the restricted expressibility of the ansatze, induced by the small number of parameters and limited entanglement, is advantageous for solving classical optimization problems with the cost function of the conditional value-at-risk (CVaR) for the NISQ era and beyond. Furthermore, the HDC scheme shows great potential for achieving quantum advantage in the NISQ era. Semi-supervised learning is a sound measure to relieve the strict demand of abundant annotated datasets, especially for challenging multi-organ segmentation . However, most existing SSL methods predict pixels in a single image independently, ignoring the relations among images and categories. In this paper, we propose a two-stage Dual Contrastive Learning Network for semi-supervised MoS, which utilizes global and local contrastive learning to strengthen the relations among images and classes. Concretely, in Stage 1, we develop a similarity-guided global contrastive learning to explore the implicit continuity and similarity among images and learn global context. Then, in Stage 2, we present an organ-aware local contrastive learning to further attract the class representations. To ease the computation burden, we introduce a mask center computation algorithm to compress the category representations for local contrastive learning. Recently, ultracompact objects have been found to be susceptible to a new nonlinear instability, known as the light-ring instability, triggered by stable light rings. This discovery raises concerns about the viability of these objects as alternatives to black holes. In this work, we investigate the presence of the light-ring instability in scalarized Reissner-Nordstr\"om black holes, which have been previously shown to admit stable light rings. We employ fully nonlinear numerical evolutions of both scalarized black holes with and without stable light rings, perturbing them initially with spherically symmetric scalar perturbations. Our simulations demonstrate the long-term stability of these scalarized black holes, suggesting that the presence of a stable light ring may not necessarily induce the light-ring instability., Comment: v1: 26 pages, 6 figures; v2: references added

Dwarf satellites in galaxy groups are distributed in an anisotropic and asymmetric manner, which is called the ``lopsided satellite distribution''. This lopsided signal has been observed not only in galaxy pairs but also in isolated systems. However, the physical origin of the lopsided signal in isolated systems is still unknown. In this work, we investigate this in the state-of-the-art hydrodynamical simulation of the MillenniumTNG Project by tracing each system back to high redshift. We find that the lopsided signal is dominated by satellites located in the outer regions of the halo and is also dominated by recently accreted satellites. The lopsided signal originates from the anisotropic accretion of galaxies from the surrounding large-scale structure and that, after accretion, the nonlinear evolution of satellites inside the dark-matter halo weakens the lopsidedness. The signal decreases as cosmic time passes because of a competition between anisotropic accretion and internal evolution within dark matter halos. The service provided by content delivery networks (CDNs) may overlook content locality, leaving room for potential performance improvement. In this study, we explore the feasibility of leveraging generated data as a replacement for fetching data in missing scenarios based on content locality. Due to sufficient local computing resources and reliable generation efficiency, we propose a content-oriented generative-hit framework (CoGenT) for CDNs. CoGenT utilizes idle computing resources on edge nodes to generate requested data based on similar or related cached data to achieve hits. Our implementation in a real-world system demonstrates that CoGenT reduces the average access latency by half. Additionally, experiments conducted on a simulator also confirm that CoGenT can enhance existing caching algorithms, resulting in reduced latency and bandwidth usage.

The Anomalous Hall Effect (AHE) manifests as a transverse voltage proportional to magnetization in ferromagnetic materials under the application of a charge current, being an indispensable tool for probing magnetism, especially in nanoscale devices. However, the AHE primarily sensitizes to out-of-plane magnetization, thereby hindering its capacity to discern the in-plane magnetization, a characteristic prevalent in ferromagnetic films. Here we challenge this conventional understanding by demonstrating the in-plane magnetization-induced AHE in iron and nickel, two ubiquitous ferromagnets. This observation of the in-plane AHE is remarkable as it contradicts existing theories that forbid such phenomena in cubic crystal systems. We trace the origin of this unanticipated phenomenon to a hitherto unconsidered octupole of the anomalous Hall conductivity in the magnetization space, a mechanism we propose could enable the detection of in-plane AHE in a wide range of ferromagnetic materials. This work realizes the in-plane AHE in common ferromagnets by exploiting the anomalous Hall conductivity octupole, revealing a new physical origin of the AHE and promising to revolutionize the design of magnetic devices and sensors.

Mendelian randomization uses genetic variants as instrumental variables to make causal inferences about the effects of modifiable risk factors on diseases from observational data. One of the major challenges in Mendelian randomization is that many genetic variants are only modestly or even weakly associated with the risk factor of interest, a setting known as many weak instruments. Many existing methods, such as the popular inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method, could be biased when the instrument strength is weak. To address this issue, the debiased IVW (dIVW) estimator, which is shown to be robust to many weak instruments, was recently proposed. However, this estimator still has non-ignorable bias when the effective sample size is small. In this paper, we propose a modified debiased IVW (mdIVW) estimator by multiplying a modification factor to the original dIVW estimator. After this simple correction, we show that the bias of the mdIVW estimator converges to zero at a faster rate than that of the dIVW estimator under some regularity conditions. Moreover, the mdIVW estimator has smaller variance than the dIVW estimator.We further extend the proposed method to account for the presence of instrumental variable selection and balanced horizontal pleiotropy. As a long-term vision in the field of artificial intelligence, the core goal of embodied intelligence is to improve the perception, understanding, and interaction capabilities of agents and the environment. Vision-language navigation (VLN), as a critical research path to achieve embodied intelligence, focuses on exploring how agents use natural language to communicate effectively with humans, receive and understand instructions, and ultimately rely on visual information to achieve accurate navigation. VLN integrates artificial intelligence, natural language processing, computer vision, and robotics. This field faces technical challenges but shows potential for application such as human-computer interaction. However, due to the complex process involved from language understanding to action execution, VLN faces the problem of aligning visual information and language instructions, improving generalization ability, and many other challenges. This survey systematically reviews the research progress of VLN and details the research direction of VLN with embodied intelligence. Rapid advancements in data science require us to have fundamentally new frameworks to tackle prevalent but highly non-trivial "irregular" inference problems, to which the large sample central limit theorem does not apply. Typical examples are those involving discrete or non-numerical parameters and those involving non-numerical data, etc. In this article, we present an innovative, wide-reaching, and effective approach, called "repro samples method," to conduct statistical inference for these irregular problems plus more. The development relates to but improves several existing simulation-inspired inference approaches, and we provide both exact and approximate theories to support our development. Moreover, the proposed approach is broadly applicable and subsumes the classical Neyman-Pearson framework as a special case. For the often-seen irregular inference problems that involve both discrete/non-numerical and continuous parameters, we propose an effective three-step procedure to make inferences for all parameters. We also develop a unique matching scheme that turns the discreteness of discrete/non-numerical parameters from an obstacle for forming inferential theories into a beneficial attribute for improving computational efficiency. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed general methodology using various examples, including a case study example on a Gaussian mixture model with unknown number of components. This case study example provides a solution to a long-standing open inference question in statistics on how to quantify the estimation uncertainty for the unknown number of components and other associated parameters. Real data and simulation studies, with comparisons to existing approaches, demonstrate the far superior performance of the proposed method.

The in-context learning (ICL) for relational triple extraction (RTE) has achieved promising performance, but still encounters two key challenges: (1) how to design effective prompts and (2) how to select proper demonstrations. Existing methods, however, fail to address these challenges appropriately. On the one hand, they usually recast RTE task to text-to-text prompting formats, which is unnatural and results in a mismatch between the output format at the pre-training time and the inference time for large language models (LLMs). On the other hand, they only utilize surface natural language features and lack consideration of triple semantics in sample selection. These issues are blocking improved performance in ICL for RTE, thus we aim to tackle prompt designing and sample selection challenges simultaneously. To this end, we devise a tabular prompting for RTE (\textsc{TableIE}) which frames RTE task into a table generation task to incorporate explicit structured information into ICL, facilitating conversion of outputs to RTE structures. For decades, the boundary of cosmic filaments have been a subject of debate. In this work, we determine the physically-motivated radii of filaments by constructing stacked galaxy number density profiles around the filament spines. We find that the slope of the profile changes with distance to the filament spine, reaching its minimum at approximately 1 Mpc at z = 0 in both state-of-the-art hydrodynamical simulations and observational data. This can be taken as the average value of the filament radius. Furthermore, we note that the average filament radius rapidly decreases from z = 4 to z = 1, and then slightly increases. Moreover, we find that the filament radius depends on the filament length, the distance from connected clusters, and the masses of the clusters. These results suggest a two-phase formation scenario of cosmic filaments. The filaments experience rapid contraction before z = 1, but their density distribution has remained roughly stable since then. The inherent polarization gradients in tight optical tweezers can be used to couple the atomic spins to the two-body motion under the action of a microwave spin-flip transition, so that such a spin-motion coupling offers an important control knob on the motional states of optically trapped two colliding atoms. Here, after preparing two elastically scattering $^{85}$Rb atoms in the three-dimensional ground-state in the optical tweezer, we employed this control in order to probe the colliding energies of elastic and inelastic channels. The combination of microwave spectra and corresponding s-wave pseudopotential model allows us to infer the effect of the state-dependent trapping potentials on the elastic colliding energies, as well as to reveal how the presence of inelastic interactions affects elastic part of the relative potential. Our work shows that the spin-motion coupling in a tight optical tweezer expand the experimental toolbox for fundamental studies of ultracold collisions in the two body systems with reactive collisions, and potentially for that of more complex interactions, such as optically trapped atom-molecule and molecule-molecule interactions., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Natural language processing (NLP) is a key component of intelligent transportation systems (ITS), but it faces many challenges in the transportation domain, such as domain-specific knowledge and data, and multi-modal inputs and outputs. This paper presents TransGPT, a novel (multi-modal) large language model for the transportation domain, which consists of two independent variants: TransGPT-SM for single-modal data and TransGPT-MM for multi-modal data. TransGPT-SM is finetuned on a single-modal Transportation dataset (STD) that contains textual data from various sources in the transportation domain. TransGPT-MM is finetuned on a multi-modal Transportation dataset (MTD) that we manually collected from three areas of the transportation domain: driving tests, traffic signs, and landmarks. We evaluate TransGPT on several benchmark datasets for different tasks in the transportation domain, and show that it outperforms baseline models on most tasks. We also showcase the potential applications of TransGPT for traffic analysis and modeling, such as generating synthetic traffic scenarios, explaining traffic phenomena, answering traffic-related questions, providing traffic recommendations, and generating traffic reports. This work advances the state-of-the-art of NLP in the transportation domain and provides a useful tool for ITS researchers and practitioners.

Large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, exhibit powerful zero-shot and instruction-following capabilities, have catalyzed a revolutionary transformation across diverse fields, especially for open-ended tasks. While the idea is less explored in the graph domain, despite the availability of numerous powerful graph models (GMs), they are restricted to tasks in a pre-defined form. Although several methods applying LLMs to graphs have been proposed, they fail to simultaneously handle the pre-defined and open-ended tasks, with LLM as a node feature enhancer or as a standalone predictor. To break this dilemma, we propose to bridge the pretrained GM and LLM by a Translator, named GraphTranslator, aiming to leverage GM to handle the pre-defined tasks effectively and utilize the extended interface of LLMs to offer various open-ended tasks for GM. To train such Translator, we propose a Producer capable of constructing the graph-text alignment data along node information, neighbor information and model information. By translating node representation into tokens, GraphTranslator empowers an LLM to make predictions based on language instructions, providing a unified perspective for both pre-defined and open-ended tasks. Extensive results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed GraphTranslator on zero-shot node classification. The graph question answering experiments reveal our GraphTranslator potential across a broad spectrum of open-ended tasks through language instructions. Image fusion integrates essential information from multiple images into a single composite, enhancing structures, textures, and refining imperfections. Existing methods predominantly focus on pixel-level and semantic visual features for recognition, but often overlook the deeper text-level semantic information beyond vision. Therefore, we introduce a novel fusion paradigm named image Fusion via vIsion-Language Model (FILM), for the first time, utilizing explicit textual information from source images to guide the fusion process. Specifically, FILM generates semantic prompts from images and inputs them into ChatGPT for comprehensive textual descriptions. These descriptions are fused within the textual domain and guide the visual information fusion, enhancing feature extraction and contextual understanding, directed by textual semantic information via cross-attention. FILM has shown promising results in four image fusion tasks: infrared-visible, medical, multi-exposure, and multi-focus image fusion. We also propose a vision-language dataset containing ChatGPT-generated paragraph descriptions for the eight image fusion datasets across four fusion tasks, facilitating future research in vision-language model-based image fusion.
