212. Essays on the economic consequences of international pension accounting standard IAS19

Abstract

This thesis examines the economic consequences of the adoption of international pension accounting standard IAS19 Revised (IAS19R) on pension asset allocation decisions by applying a difference-in-differences with propensity score matching method. The publication of IAS19R in 2011 marked a fundamental change to pension reporting in financial statements. In particular, it had a significant impact on (1) how sponsor firms recognise net pension assets/liabilities on the balance sheet, (2) the calculation and recognition of pension expenses, (3) the presentation of re-measurement (actuarial gains and losses), treatment of which had been heavily debated by academics and practitioners, and (4) disclosure requirements for pension schemes, which had been criticised as “excessive” under IAS19. This research examines the “real effect” of IAS19R adoption on management investment decisions. Using a difference-in-differences with propensity score matching method, the results suggest that, on average, UK sponsor firms affected by IAS19R have reduced their risk taking in pension investments post-IAS19R, both over time and compared with a control sample of unaffected US firms (matched by propensity score matching). The results of sensitivity analysis also suggest that UK sponsor firms tried to avoid the expensive liquidity costs of asset re-allocation by switching their pension plan asset allocations gradually during the period around the publication and adoption of IAS19R. Furthermore, the outcomes of sensitivity tests suggest a positive relationship between equity investment levels, and firms’ leverage and cash flow risk, consistent with the “risk-shifting” hypothesis documented in the previous literature. The thesis also applies a manual textual analysis on the comment letters sent by industrial firms to the IASB to provide their opinions on the IAS19R Exposure Draft. The analysis describes and tabulates the arguments raised by these firms on three main amendment areas of IAS19: recognition, presentation and disclosure. Based on this description, this part aims to motivate the empirical research mentioned previously and shed light on the other potential consequences of IAS19R adoption. These consequences include: the management of funding might be driven by accounting rules rather than management rules; the increasing volatility of balance sheet; de-risking in the pension plan portfolio following the adoption of IAS19R; the diminishing of financial statement “true and fair view” and its usefulness due to the abolition of expected rate of return and excessive requirements on pension disclosure. Furthermore, the study also suggests that the lobbying behaviour of these firms on the standard setting process is consistent with the predictions of Positive Accounting Theory.

214. Context-aware CNNs for person head detection

Abstract

Person detection is a key problem for many computer vision tasks. While face detection has reached maturity, detecting people under a full variation of camera view-points, human poses, lighting conditions and occlusions is still a difficult challenge. In this work we focus on detecting human heads in natural scenes. Starting from the recent local R-CNN object detector, we extend it with two types of contextual cues. First, we leverage person-scene relations and propose a Global CNN model trained to predict positions and scales of heads directly from the full image. Second, we explicitly model pairwise relations among objects and train a Pairwise CNN model using a structured-output surrogate loss. The Local, Global and Pairwise models are combined into a joint CNN framework. To train and test our full model, we introduce a large dataset composed of 369,846 human heads annotated in 224,740 movie frames. We evaluate our method and demonstrate improvements of person head detection against several recent baselines in three datasets. 225. Unveiling Versatile Electronic Properties and Contact Features of Metal–Semiconductor Graphene/γ-Ge2SSe van der Waals Heterostructures

Abstract

Recently, searching for a metal–semiconductor junction (MSJ) that exhibits low-contact resistance has received tremendous consideration, as they are essential components in next-generation field-effect transistors. In this work, we design a MSJ by integrating two-dimensional (2D) graphene as the metallic electrode and 2D Janus γ-Ge2SSe as the semiconducting channel using first-principles simulations. All the graphene/γ-Ge2SSe MSJs are predicted to be energetically, mechanically, and thermodynamically stable, characterized by the weak van der Waals (vdW) interactions. The graphene/γ-SGe2Se MSJ-vdWH form the n-type Schottky contact (SC), while the graphene/γ-SeGe2S MSJ-vdWH form the p-type one, suggesting that the switching between p-type and n-type SC in the graphene/γ-Ge2SSe MSJ-vdWHs can occur spontaneously by simply altering the stacking patterns, without requiring any external conditions. Notably, the contact features, including contact types and barriers of the graphene/γ-Ge2SSe MSJs are significant in versatility and can be altered by applying electric gating and adjusting interlayer spacing. Both the applied electric gating and strain engineering induce switchability between p- and n-type and SC to OC in the graphene/γ-Ge2SSE MSJs. This versatility underscores the potential of the graphene/γ-Ge2SSe MSJ for next-generation applications that require low-contact resistance and high performance.

226. Security for the Metaverse: Blockchain and Machine Learning Techniques for Intrusion Detection

Abstract

Considered to be the next-generation (NextG) Internet, the Metaverse faces various security risks inherited from its predecessor and new specialized threats. It is even more challenging to mitigate these issues in a large-scale setting with numerous wearable devices such as augmented, virtual reality (AR/VR) headsets. In this article, we aim to analyze the security aspect of the Metaverse thoroughly, focusing on blockchain and machine learning (ML) solutions. Firstly, we present a 4-layer architecture of the Metaverse and discuss potential solutions for Metaverse security based on blockchain and ML. Next, we develop a decentralized collaborative intrusion detection system (CIDS) based on blockchain and federated learning (FL) that allows such the Metaverse users to collaboratively protect this digital world. This helps solving the scalability and single-point-of-failure (SPoF) issues of traditional security approaches. Finally, we outline some key challenges and discuss future research directions for Metaverse security.

Abstract

We propose here a fabrication of an electrochemical sensor to detect heavy metal ions based on a glass carbon electrode (GCE) modified with a composite system consisting of graphene, chitosan, and Fe3O4 nanoparticles (GrCF) by using square wave voltammetry (SWV) measurements. The GrCF composite was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Raman spectroscopy. GrCF consists of thin and smooth sheets stacked in overlapping layers to form porous structures. In the GrCF composite, graphene acts as a substrate with a high electrochemical activity and a good electrical conductivity, Fe3O4 nanoparticles are uniformly distributed on the graphene thanks to chitosan as a binder, the functional groups of chitosan (− OH, − NH2) have the ability to form complexes with heavy metal ions, and the excellent adsorption capacity of Fe3O4 nanoparticles has enhanced the electrochemical reactions. The GrCF/GCE can detect Pb2+ ions with a linear range from 4 to 16 μM, a low detection limit of 3.57 μM, and a sensitivity of 8.623 μA μM−1. Furthermore, the repeatability of the measurements are reliable with a standard deviation (SD) of 0.15 μA and a relative standard deviation (RSD%) of 4.16%. Additionally, Pb2+ was detected in the real sample at potentials of − 0.50 V/ − 0.52 V with calculated recovery values for two measurements of 89.02% and 89.43%. 233. StyleCity: Large-Scale 3D Urban Scenes Stylization with Vision-and-Text Reference via Progressive Optimization

Abstract

Creating large-scale virtual urban scenes with variant styles is inherently challenging. To facilitate prototypes of virtual production and bypass the need for complex materials and lighting setups, we introduce the first vision-and-text-driven texture stylization system for large-scale urban scenes, StyleCity. Taking an image and text as references, StyleCity stylizes a 3D textured mesh of a large-scale urban scene in a semantics-aware fashion and generates a harmonic omnidirectional sky background. To achieve that, we propose to stylize a neural texture field by transferring 2D vision-and-text priors to 3D globally and locally. During 3D stylization, we progressively scale the planned training views of the input 3D scene at different levels in order to preserve high-quality scene content. We then optimize the scene style globally by adapting the scale of the style image with the scale of the training views. Moreover, we enhance local semantics consistency by the semantics-aware style loss which is crucial for photo-realistic stylization. Besides texture stylization, we further adopt a generative diffusion model to synthesize a style-consistent omnidirectional sky image, which offers a more immersive atmosphere and assists the semantic stylization process. The stylized neural texture field can be baked into an arbitrary-resolution texture, enabling seamless integration into conventional rendering pipelines and significantly easing the virtual production prototyping process. Abstract

Using synchrotron powder diffraction the structure of a co-crystal between benzene and ethane has been determined. The structure is remarkable, a lattice of benzene molecules playing host to ethane molecules. This is demonstrated by the similarity between the interactions found in the co-crystal structure and those in the pure structure, showing that the C-H...{\pi} network of benzene is maintained as a 'host' but expands to allow the ethane 'guest' to situate within the channels that result from this network. The co-crystal is determined to be a 3:1 benzene:ethane co-crystal and its structure is described by the trigonal space group $R\bar{3}$ with a = 15.977(1) {\AA} and c = 5.581(1) {\AA} at 90 K, resulting in a density of 1.067 g$\cdot$cm$^{-3}$. 239. Risk factors of postoperative complications and their effect on survival after laparoscopic gastrectomy for gastric cancer.

Abstract

Background: The association between postoperative complications and long‐term survival after laparoscopic gastrectomy (LG) for gastric cancer (GC) remains uncertain. This study aimed to determine the incidence and risk factors of postoperative complications and evaluate their impact on survival outcomes in patients undergoing LG. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 621 patients who underwent LG for gastric adenocarcinoma between March 2015 and December 2021. Postoperative complications were classified according to the Clavien–Dindo classification, with major complications defined as Grade III or higher. Logistic regression models with stepwise backward procedure were used to identify risk factors for complications. To assess the impact of postoperative complications on survival, uni‐ and multi‐variable Cox proportional hazard models were used for overall survival (OS) and disease‐free survival (DFS). Results: Overall rate of postoperative complications was 17.6% (109 patients); 33 patients (5.3%) had major complications. Independent risk factors for major complications were Charlson comorbidities index (OR [95% CI], 1.87 [1.09–3.12], p‐value = 0.018 for each one score increase), and type of anastomosis (OR [95% CI], 0.28 [0.09–0.91], p‐value = 0.029 when comparing Billroth II with Billroth I). Multivariable analysis identified major complications as an independent prognostic factor to reduce OS (HR [95% CI], 2.32 [1.02–5.30], p‐value = 0.045) and DFS (HR [95% CI], 2.63 [1.37–5.06], p‐value = 0.004). Other prognostic factors for decreased survival outcomes were tumor size, presence of invasive lymph nodes, and T4a stage. Conclusions: Major complications rate of LG for GC was approximately 5.3%. Charlson comorbidities index and type of anastomosis were identified as risk factors for major postoperative complications. Abstract

Bamboo diplomacy, the latest conceptualization in Vietnamese foreign policy, has recently captured widespread media coverage. This study investigates the discursive legitimation strategies employed by the Vietnamese Communist Party to justify the adoption of the aforementioned policy. In addition, the study focuses on the integration of nationalism in the legitimation process of bamboo diplomacy discourse in the context of digital media. Drawing upon constructivism, banal nationalism, and Van Leeuwen's model of legitimation in discourse and communication, the study utilizes CDA and DHA to analyze 66 articles on six official Vietnamese online news outlets. The findings revealed that nationalism-based legitimacy is a key underpinning of three discursive strategies of the four implemented in the VCP's bamboo diplomacy discourse. Accordingly, three main patterns of nationhood reproduction were identified: (i) the myth of national history, (ii) the authority of national traditions, and (iii) the moralization of bamboo iconography. 243. Efficacy of ravulizumab in patients with generalized myasthenia gravis by time from diagnosis: A post hoc subgroup analysis of the CHAMPION MG study.

Abstract

Introduction/Aims: The CHAMPION MG study demonstrated that ravulizumab significantly improved Myasthenia Gravis‐Activities of Daily Living (MG‐ADL) and Quantitative Myasthenia Gravis (QMG) total scores versus placebo in adults with acetylcholine receptor antibody‐positive generalized myasthenia gravis (AChR+ gMG). This post hoc analysis aimed to assess these outcomes by time from MG diagnosis. Methods: Changes from baseline to week 26 in MG‐ADL and QMG total scores were analyzed by time from MG diagnosis to study entry (≤2 vs. >2 years). Within each subgroup, least‐squares (LS) mean changes for ravulizumab and placebo were compared using mixed models for repeated measures. Results: In ravulizumab‐treated patients, differences in LS mean (standard error of the mean) changes from baseline to week 26 were not statistically significant in the ≤2‐years subgroup versus the >2‐years subgroup for MG‐ADL (−4.3 [0.70] vs. −2.9 [0.37]; p =.0511) or QMG (−4.3 [0.94] vs. −2.5 [0.50]; p =.0822) scores. No clear trends were observed in the placebo group. LS mean changes from baseline were significantly greater for ravulizumab versus placebo in both the ≤2 and >2 years from diagnosis subgroups for MG‐ADL and QMG scores (all p <.05). The difference in treatment effect between the ≤2‐years and >2‐years subgroups was not statistically significant. No clinically meaningful between‐subgroup differences in treatment‐emergent adverse events were observed in ravulizumab‐treated patients. Discussion: Ravulizumab treatment improved clinical outcomes for patients with AChR+ gMG regardless of time from diagnosis. A numerical trend was observed favoring greater treatment effect with earlier versus later treatment after diagnosis. Further studies are required for confirmation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
