PURPOSE: To evaluate the role of apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values in distinguishing DCIS grades and identifying the presence of micro-invasive/invasive disease. METHODS AND MATERIALS: REB approved study with informed consent obtained from 70 women (age 36-84) scheduled for core-biopsy with results of 71 non-invasive/high-risk breast lesions. All patients underwent surgery and were assessed pre-operatively using diffusion weighted (DWI)-MRI. Lesion size, morphology and ADC values were recorded. The Kruskal Wallis or one-way ANOVA test and Pearson correlation coefficient were used to study the association between ADC values and the analyzed MRI lesion characteristics. Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the ability of ADC values to predict the presence of invasion. RESULTS: Of 71 cases, 45.1% were imaged on a 3T magnet and 54.9% on 1.5 T. Final pathology demonstrated invasive cancer in 26.8%, micro-invasion in 18.3% and pure DCIS in 59.2%. On 3T, mean ADC value was 1.20 ×10-3 mm2/s ± 0.48 (SD) (range, 0.47 - 1.78 ×10-3 mm2/s) for non-high grade DCIS, 1.23 × 10-3 mm2/s ± 0.40 (SD) (range, 0.26 - 1.77 ×10-3 mm2/s) for high-grade DCIS, and 1.15 × 10-3 mm2/s ± 0.45 (SD) (range, 0.26 - 1.75 ×10-3 mm2/s) for invasive/microinvasive disease. On 1.5T, mean ADC value was 1.04 × 10-3 mm2/s ± 0.41 (SD) (range, 0.15 - 1.85 ×10-3 mm2/s) for non-high grade DCIS, 1.01 × 10-3 mm2/s ± 0.37 (SD) (range, 0.06 - 1.76 ×10-3 mm2/s) for high-grade DCIS, and 1.11 × 10-3 mm2/s ± 0.30 (SD) (range, 0.64 - 1.76 ×10-3 mm2/s) for invasive/microinvasive disease. Based on logistic regression analysis, mean ADC value was not a significant predictor for invasiveness using 1.5 T [OR = 2.6 (95% CI (0.409, 17.12)), p = 0.3] or 3T [OR = 0.4 (95% CI (0.076, 2.399)), p = 0.3] CONCLUSION: Mean ADC acquired using a 1.5T or 3T MRI was unable to predict high-grade or invasive disease in biopsy-proven DCIS lesions. Further work is exploring voxel-based approaches that may better appreciate tumor heterogeneity and identify sub-regions of tumor with these higher risk features. Purpose: To evaluate the influence of colorant solutions on color stability and surface roughness of indirect resin composites submitted to prior immersion in mouthwashes. Methods: Five brands of indirect resin composites were assessed: Adoro, Resilab, Cristobal, Sinfony and Epricord. The specimens were immersed in five different solutions (n= 10): four mouthwashes (Listerine, Oral-B, Plax, Periogard) and artificial saliva (control). 60 hours after immersion in mouthwashes, the specimens were exposed to coffee solution. Shade stability and surface roughness were tested by a spectrophotometer and by a profilometer, respectively. A three-way repeated-measures ANOVA was performed. Differences between the values were compared by the Tukey-Kramer test (P< 0.05). Results: The majority of the specimens showed human-perceptible color change. Greater color change was observed after immersion in coffee, except for Cristobal. The color change was even higher for specimens previously immersed in mouthwashes. The Epricord resin showed the lowest roughness value and the Cristobal showed the highest value, regardless of the period. The highest roughness change occurred after immersion in Listerine. The functional impression technique is one of the most important steps for complete and/or partial edentulism treatment. So, correct analysis and record of supporting structures are essential to determine the denture extension. The functional impression technique has two stages - a customized final impression tray and a border impression - which aims to record the optimal denture supporting area. The aim of this study was to review the literature related to border impression and functional impression techniques, describing the technique and materials, and identifying the procedure’s objectives and function. Dental Implants ,Cortical Bone ,Torque ,Alveolar Bone Loss ,Dentistry ,RK1-715 - Abstract
Abstract The objective of this study was to analyze the influence of insertion torque, bone type, and peri-implant bone loss on implant stability quotient (ISQ) of cylindrical external hexagon (EH) and Morse Taper (MT) implants. Forty-four single implants were placed in the edentulous areas of 20 patients who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Immediately after implant placement (t1) and after osseointegration (four and six months for mandible and maxilla, respectively) (t2), insertion torque, resonance frequency, and peri-implant bone loss were measured using probing depths and digital periapical radiography. A significant difference was noted in the ISQ values between t1 and t2 in type III bone for EH and MT implants. No significant difference in bone loss values was observed when comparing bone types for EH or MT in all evaluated sites. Based on marginal bone loss assessed using radiography, there was no significant difference between the MT and EH groups. A positive correlation between torque and ISQ t1 value was observed for MT (correlation: 0.439; p = 0.041) and EH (correlation: 0.461; p = 0.031) implants. For EH and MT implants, the greater the insertion torque, the greater was the ISQ value (moderately positive correlation). A weak negative correlation was found between bone type and ISQ t1 for MT implants. Contrarily, no correlation was observed between bone type and ISQ t1 for EH implants. In all cases, bone loss around the implants was clinically normal.

A falha do tipo mista teve a maior prevalência (57,01%).

Abstract Background The aim was to analyze the levels of stress of edentulous patients through the state-trait anxiety inventory (STAI) and salivary flow through the visual analogue scale (VAS) xerostomia questionnaire, as well as analyze the levels of cortisol, capillary blood glucose, and blood pressure (BP) before and after the installation of complete dentures. Methods Fifty patients were evaluated. The STAI and VAS xerostomia questionnaire were applied before the installation of the prosthesis, on the day of its installation, and 1 month after the last recall visit. The BP measurement, as well as salivary and blood collections, were performed before the installation of the prothesis, and 1 month after the last recall visit. Data from the VAS xerostomia questionnaire and cortisol levels were submitted to ANOVA and the Tukey test (P = .05). Data from the STAI, as well as blood glucose and BP levels, were submitted to the Chi-square test (P = .05). The correlation between cortisol and blood glucose and between cortisol levels and BP was analyzed. Results There was no statistically significant association between the questions of the VAS xerostomia questionnaire, STAI-state and STAI-trait scores, or the periods analyzed. However, the cortisol level collected in the morning decreased after the installation of the prosthesis. There was a correlation between cortisol and blood glucose and BP levels. Conclusions The installation of complete dentures was beneficial for patients since it was probably responsible for the cortisol level reduction.

ABSTRACT Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the dimensional stability and maintenance of details of conventional and high stability alginates up to 5-day storage. Methods: Two types of alginates were selected (n=10) for this study, conventional (Hydrogum) and high stability alginates (Hydrogum 5), which were produced with the aid of a cylindrical metal block and a ring-shaped metal mold (Specifications 18, 19, and 25, ANSI/ADA). Ten images were obtained from the molds for the dimensional stability test, which were taken immediately after their production and at each different storage periods (15 min, 24 h, 48 h, 72 h, 96 h, and 120 h) by a digital camera. The specimens were kept hermetically sealed in plastic bags (23°C) and then used to obtain 140 (n=70) dental stone models, used in the detail reproduction test, in which the angular accuracy of three grooves (20 µm, 50 µm, and 75 µm) was observed at each period. The details reproduction accuracy was classified using a predetermined score classification. Measurements of dimensional changes were made in the Corel DRAW X6 program. The data were submitted to the Student’s t-test (α?#8197;= 0.05). Results: A statistically significant difference concerning the size of the matrix was observed after 24h for both alginates, and a statistically significant negative linear dimensional change (contraction) was verified after 24 h of storage (1.52% for the high stability alginate, and 1.32% for the conventional alginate). The high stability alginate kept the full details for 72 hours, while the conventional alginate, for 24 h. Both alginates reproduced the 75 µm groove at all storage periods. Conclusion: Impressions made with both alginates presented satisfactory clinical results when the alginates were immediately poured.

Objective. To evaluate the influence of different pigmentations and accelerated aging on the hardness and tear strength of the A-2186 and MDX4-4210 silicones. Materials and Methods. The samples A-2186 and MDX4-4210 were manufactured without and with pigmentations (black, bronze, and pink). For the Shore A hardness test, 80 samples of each silicone were fabricated, and for the tear strength test, 320 samples of each silicone were fabricated. Eight groups were created for each test (n = 10). These tests were performed before and after 252, 504, and 1008 hours of aging. Three-way repeated-measures analysis of variance and the Tukey test were performed (α = 0.05). Results. The A-2186 silicone showed higher hardness and tear strength when compared with the MDX4-4210 silicone p0.05. All hardness values were between 25 and 35 units, regardless of the silicone type, period, and pigmentation (or no pigmentation). In most situations, the hardness of silicones used increased after 252 hours p0.05. All pigmented MDX4-4210 groups showed no change in tear strength from 0 (initial) to 1008 hours of aging p>0.05. In all A-2186 groups, from 252 to 504 hours, there was a reduction in tear strength p0.05. Conclusion. In most situations, the A-2186 silicone showed significantly higher values of hardness and tear strength than the MDX4-4210 silicone. All hardness values were considered clinically acceptable. Accelerated aging could increase, decrease, or not significantly change the hardness and tear strength of the silicones used. The results of hardness and tear strength suggest that MDX4-4210 was more influenced by the presence of pigmentation after aging.

Introduction: New materials are developed all the time to better suit the patients' needs, such as flexible injectable thermoplastic resins that provide more esthetics to patients using removable partial dentures. Aim: The objective of this study was to evaluate the color change, microhardness and flexural strength of an experimental flexible acrylic resin under the influence of thermocycling. Materials and Methods: This in vitro study was conducted in Aracatuba Dental School, UNESP University. Two types of samples were made, 30 in circular format (3×10 mm) for color and microhardness tests, and 60 in rectangular format (64×10×3.3 mm) for the flexural strength test. The samples were divided into three groups (n=10), one of the experimental flexible resin tested, one with a flexible resin already marketed (Sorriflex), and a control group of a conventional thermopolymerisable acrylic resin (Lucitone). After the preparation, color, microhardness and flexural strength readings were taken, initially and after 2000 thermocycling cycles. The obtained data was submitted to analysis of variance ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey’s test when necessary. Results: All resins presented a clinically acceptable color variation (ΔE), with no significant difference between resin type (p>0.05). There was a difference in the hardness of resins in ascending order (Sorriflex, experimental and Lucitone) and the hardness increased after thermocycling (p

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a surface treatment with Sofreliner primer on tensile bond strength of a resin-based soft liner (Coe-Soft) bonded to a polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) resin before and after accelerated aging simulated by a thermocycling machine. Material and Methods: One hundred and twenty rectangular specimens of PMMA resin were fabricated with 10 × 10 mm² of cross-section and 40 mm of height. The resin-based soft liner was positioned between two PMMA resin specimens. The specimens were divided randomly into 6 groups (n = 10) according to the surface treatment and accelerated aging cycles (0, 500 and 1000). After accelerated aging, specimens were submitted to tensile bond strength test. The fractures were classified as adhesive, cohesive or both. Results: Most failures were classified as cohesive (p = 0.025) and there was an increase on the mean values of tensile bond strength for group with primer application regardless the cycles of accelerated aging, and also an increase along thermocycling periods. The scanning electronic microscopy was used to illustrate the types of failures and the effect of primer application on PMMA acrylic resin surface. Conclusion: The primer application associated with resin-based soft liners is clinically viable, once this treatment strategy provides a reliable adhesion.

The objective of this study was to report a case of tooth fracture during the sport practice and the treatment performed for the patient. A 17-year-old male patient was subjected to an endontic treatment followed by the reattachment of the fractured teeth. Teeth were endodontically treated by conventional method. After, the acid etching with 37% phosphoric acid gel was performed and a bonding agent was applied on the dental surface. The fragments were reattachment and bonded with minimum amount of composite resin since the teeth/fragment interface was small. The occlusal contacts were adjusted in the finish line of restorations with a diamond bur and the polishing was performed with aluminum oxide discs. Positive esthetical and periodontal outcomes with no complications in the endodontic treatment were observed on radiographic examinations after twelve months of follow up. The endodontic treatment associated with the reattachment of the fractured teeth by a bonding procedure was a conservative treatment for the patient. The use of mouthguards is important to prevent such dramatic events.

Dentistry ,RK1-715 - Abstract
Conservative clinical solutions, predictable esthetic, and immediate outcomes are important concepts of restorative dentistry. The aim of this case study was to recognize the selective enamel removal as an interesting conservative alternative to achieve optimal esthetic results and discuss the clinical protocol. This clinical report described an alternative esthetic and conservative treatment to transform the long and sharp aspect of the maxillary canines with a slightly aggressive aspect into features of slightly curved teeth with delicate lines. An accurate diagnostic and esthetic analysis of the smile was initially performed. The selective enamel removal was performed, and direct composite restoration was strategically placed. Clinical assessment showed good esthetic outcomes, enabling a smile harmony with an immediate, simple, and lower-cost technique. Practitioners should be exposed to conservative approaches to create esthetic smiles based on the selective enamel removal technique combined with composite resin.

The ocular prosthesis has an important role in the psychosocial and physiological recovery of anophthalmic individuals. However, conjunctival irritation, biofilm adhesion, and complaints of dry eye or excessive tearing may occur. The aim of this clinical trial was to evaluate the influence of ocular prostheses repolishing on microbiological, inflammatory, sensory, and tear production aspects of unilateral anophthalmic volunteers. Sixteen subjects wearing the same ocular prosthesis for at least 2 years were divided into 2 groups: intervention (IN) (n = 10) and no intervention (NIN) (n = 6). In addition, a third group with volunteers without ocular disability was the positive control (PC) (n = 5). The anophthalmic cavity, contralateral eye, and ocular prosthesis surface of anophthalmic volunteers and the right eye of the PC group were evaluated at 3 periods (initial period and at 15 and 30 days after repolishing). The microbiological analysis evaluated by the colony forming units (CFU) of Candida albicans fungi, total bacteria, and of the Staphylococcus genus (Staphylococcus epidermidis and S. aureus). Exfoliative cytology was performed to quantify the appearance of conjunctival inflammatory cells in all volunteers. Sensory analysis was performed using a quantitative mechanical sensory test with nylon monofilaments in three points of the upper and lower eyelid of all volunteers and an internal central point of the anophthalmic cavity. Tear production was assessed by Schirmer's test. Conjunctival inflammation was clinically assessed. For comparison between groups in the initial period, the Kruskal Wallis test was used, except for inflammation level (Mann-Whitney test). For the analysis among periods in the IN group, the Friedman's test was performed. Qualitative data were submitted to descriptive statistics, and the Cochran's Q test was applied, when necessary. All analyzes were performed at a 5%-significance level. Microbiological analysis showed greater microorganism formation in both anophthalmic cavity and prosthesis than in the contralateral eye in the initial period. In the anophthalmic cavity of the IN group, the amount of all microorganisms evaluated was statistically higher in the initial period than in 15 and 30 days after repolishing. In the ocular prosthesis, there was a greater accumulation of total bacteria and Candida albicans in the initial period than at 15 and 30 days after repolishing. More eyelid inflammation was observed in the anophthalmic cavity than in the contralateral eye. There was a statistically significant reduction in clinical inflammatory signs at 15 and 30 days after repolishing in the IN group. Cytological analysis showed no significant reduction in inflammatory cell infiltrate at 15 and 30 days after repolishing. There was a difference in tear production, where the IN group - contralateral eye had lower tear production than the NIN group - anophthalmic cavity. In the eyelid sensitivity analysis, no statistical differences were observed between the groups, nor in relation to the analyzed periods in the IN group. It is possible to conclude that repolishing was beneficial in reducing microorganisms over time and in reducing clinical inflammatory signs. FAPESP 2019/07295-2

Dentistry ,RK1-715 - Abstract
The success of rehabilitation will not depend on just clinical procedures. A proper dental technique (ceramist) is required as well as the respect for some biomimetic principles to obtain the desired final result. This study has the purpose of describing a prosthetic rehabilitation with laminate veneers and all-ceramic crowns of a patient unsatisfied with a previous esthetic treatment because of the negligence of some biomimetic principles. A 45-year-old female patient was admitted to the dental clinic complaining about the lifelike appearance of her all-ceramic restorations. Before the fabrication of new restorations, a mock-up was conducted to verify the patient’s satisfaction. A ceramist conducted all the fabrication process so that surface characterizations could be visually verified and the lifelike appearance of natural tooth could be reproduced. After the cementation procedure, the patient reported being satisfied with the lifelike appearance of the new restorations. Based on the clinical findings of the present case report, it can be concluded that the reproduction of the lifelike esthetic appearance of natural teeth and the visualization of the final results before definitive procedures are essential to obtain the clinical success.

Com relação ao teor de umidade, a média da carne dos animais da dieta alto grão foi superior e diferente (P 0.05) between the control diets and with residual frying oil, expressed in grams / day (g/day) and percentage of live weight (% PV) for daily consumption of dry matter (CMS), crude protein (CPB), mineral matter (CMM), neutral detergent insoluble fiber (CFDN) and total carbohydrates (CCT), with the lowest averages for these variables being observed with the high grain diet. The highest averages for final weight (PF), total weight gain (GPT) and daily weight gain (GPD) were observed with the control diets and with the inclusion of residual oil, which did not differ between them (P> 0.05) . There was no effect (P> 0.05) of treatments on hot carcass (RCQ), cold carcass (RCF) and true (RV) yields. The physical parameters of the meat (P> 0.05) were not influenced by the diets. The values of crude protein and meat lipids were higher for treatment with 6% residual oil, not differing (P> 0.05) for these parameters of the control diet. Regarding the moisture content, the meat of the animals of the high grain diet was superior and statistically different (P

This research evaluated the influence of different liquid diets on carcass yield, and components of retail cuts weight of crossbred calves slaughtered at 60 days of age. It was used 24 crossbred calves distributed in a completely randomized design with four treatments and six replications: whole milk, 50% whole milk + 50% of cheese whey, 50% whole milk + 50% cheese whey supplemented with a whole egg; whole milk and 50% + 50% of cheese whey supplemented with a egg added with biotin. It was evaluated intake, weight gain and slaughter weight. After laughter at 60 days, it was collected all data related to carcass characteristics, commercial cut yields and components of body weight. The data were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey mean comparison (P<0.05). The substitution of milk by cheese whey in nature can be adopted as a way to reduce the cost of production in lactating since such a substitution will not adversely interfere with the development of animals. ABSTRACT: This study aimed to evaluate whether cheese whey associated with transitional milk or not, could serve as a suitable alternative to whole milk for calf rearing. For this, twenty-four male calves of crossbred Holstein-Zebu, were distributed in a completely randomized design with three treatments (8 calves per treatment) and fed for 60 days with one of the following liquid diets: i) 100% whole milk, ii) 50% whole milk and 50% cheese whey, and iii) 30% transitional milk and 70% cheese whey. There was no difference in food intake between treatments. The analysis showed that whole milk replacement did not alter the stomach weight or the ruminal cell proliferation when compared to treatment using 100% whole milk; however, the transitional milk/cheese whey group showed larger ruminal papillae. These results suggested that a transitional milk-cheese whey diet associated with solid food and proper nutrient complements might enhance the post-natal development of rumen papillae in calves, which might contribute to prepare them for weaning.

- Abstract
The objective of this study was to analyze the influence of insertion torque, bone type, and peri-implant bone loss on implant stability quotient (ISQ) of cylindrical external hexagon (EH) and Morse Taper (MT) implants.

Objective: This pilot, prospective interventional study aimed to analyze the influence of supracrestal tissue height when using the one abutment-one time concept at the time of implant placement, on peri-implant hard and soft tissue remodeling in esthetic areas. The definitive crown was placed 7 days later., Method and Materials: Facial mucosal margin position, mesial and distal papilla levels, and mesial and distal marginal bone loss were assessed after 7 days (placement of the definitive crown), and 1, 2, 3, 6, and 12 months after implant placement. Patients were classified according to the supracrestal tissue height as thin (< 3 mm) and thick (≥ 3 mm)., Results: Fifteen patients fulfilled the eligibility criteria and were included in the study. Eight presented a thick supracrestal tissue height and seven a thin supracrestal tissue height. After 12 months, the implant success rate was 100%. The mean recession at the facial mucosal margin position was -0.47 ± 0.57 mm and -0.19 ± 0.41 mm in thin and thick groups, respectively (P = .29). The mean mesial papilla level recession was -0.19 ± 0.06 mm in the thin group and -0.01 ± 0.07 mm in the thick group (P < .01), and the mean distal papilla level recession was -0.15 ± 0.09 mm in the thin group and 0.00 ± 0.15 mm in the thick group (P < .05). The mean bone loss was -0.21 ± 0.18 mm and -0.04 ± 0.14 mm in the thin and thick groups, respectively (P < .05)., Conclusion: Single maxillary anterior implants with thin supracrestal tissue height (< 3 mm) at the time of implant placement had greater bone loss and papillary recession than implants with a thick soft tissue height (≥ 3 mm), even when using the one abutment-one time concept.

- Abstract
Background: Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) is the most used material for the manufacturing of eye prostheses., Objectives: To investigate the cytotoxicity of different cleaning agents for ocular prostheses on human conjunctival cells., Material and Methods: Six groups of specimens were created (saline, soap, 4% chlorhexidine, hydrogen peroxide, 1% triclosan, and citronella oil). Three specimens were made for each disinfectant at each disinfection period (1, 7, 15, 30, 60, and 90 days), totaling 108 specimens. Thus, the specimens were disinfected, with different disinfectants, for different periods of time. After each disinfection process, the specimens were washed with sterile distilled water. A human conjunctival cell line was grown on the acrylic resin specimens and then cytotoxicity tests (MTT and Neutral Red (NR)) were performed. A negative control (untreated cell cultures) and positive control (Tween 20) were created. Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Bonferroni test were performed (p < 0.05)., Results: For the MTT and NR tests, when there was a significant difference between the disinfectant and negative control, the disinfectant generated a significant reduction in cell proliferation most of the time., Conclusions: All reductions in cell proliferation caused by the disinfectants were clinically acceptable. All disinfectants tested in this study were found to be non-cytotoxic to human conjunctival cells.

- Abstract
Background: The aim of this study was to verify if there is a relationship between self-reported pain, PPT (pressure pain threshold) of the masseter, temporal and sternocleidomastoid muscles, pain catastrophizing and quality of life in patients with TMD (temporomandibular disorder) of muscular origin., Material and Methods: Ninety-seven patients with muscular TMD (TMD group) and 97 asymptomatic (control group) were included in the study. The evaluation methods used were: 1) Self-reported pain was assessed using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for questions 7, 8 and 9 of the RDC/TMD Axis I questionnaire; 2) The PPT assessment was performed using a digital algometer on the masseter, temporal, and sternocleidomastoid muscles (both sides); 3) Pain catastrophizing was assessed using the PCS (Pain Catastrophizing Scale); and 4) Oral health-related quality of life was assessed using the OHIP-14 (Oral Healthy Impact Profile-14). Data were submitted to Spearman correlation and logistic regression ( p <0.05)., Results: There were significant positive correlations between self-reported pain (VAS-Q7, VAS-Q8 and VAS-Q9), pain catastrophizing (PCS-Helplessness, PCS-Magnification, PCS-Rumination and PCS-Total) and quality of life (OHIP-14) ( p <0.05). There was a significant negative correlation of self-reported pain (VAS-Q8) with PPT of the temporal (left) and sternocleidomastoid (both sides) ( p <0.05). The rumination and magnification domains increased the chance of high self-reported pain in all situations (VAS-Q7, VAS-Q8 and VAS-Q9) ( p <0.05). The helplessness domain only increased the chance of high self-reported pain for VAS-Q8 ( p <0.05). The presence of TMD of muscular origin, high self-reported pain (VAS-Q7) or pain catastrophizing increased the chance of a low quality of life in relation to the control group ( p <0.05). In addition, the reduction in sternocleidomastoid PPT increased the chance of poor quality of life ( p <0.05). Key words: Myofascial pain syndromes, pain catastrophizing, myalgia, quality of life, surveys and questionnaires, temporomandibular joint disorders., Competing Interests: Conflicts of interest None of the authors has any conflict of interest related to the conduct of this study., (Copyright: © 2023 Medicina Oral S.L.)

- Abstract
Background: Temporary prosthesis protects the oral tissues, in addition to providing aesthetic look and masticatory function until a definitive prosthesis is manufactured., Objectives: To evaluate the effect of glaze and 0.12% chlorhexidine (CHX) on the physical and mechanical properties of bis-acryl, and to evaluate the antimicrobial efficacy of CHX., Material and Methods: Eighty specimens of bis-acryl resin were made. Over 40 of them the glaze was applied. One specimen with and 1 specimen without glaze were placed in niches of an appliance manufactured for each patient. Each of the 20 volunteers received 2 devices. Initially, the volunteers used one device and treated it with sucrose for 7 days (control), and later they used the other device and treated it with sucrose and CHX for 7 days (test). Color, microhardness, roughness, surface energy, and insoluble extracellular polysaccharides (EPS) tests were performed. All results were submitted to the Tukey's test, with the exception of the EPS results, which were submitted to the Student's t test., Results: The ΔE00 of the unglazed control group was significantly higher than that of the unglazed test group. In all groups, a significant decrease in microhardness occurred over time. At both times, the glaze significantly increased the microhardness of the specimens (in all the glazed groups). At the final time, the test glaze group showed significantly higher microhardness compared with the control glaze group. Roughness in the groups without glaze increased significantly with CHX treatment over time. At both times, the glaze generated a significant reduction in roughness in the control and test groups. There was a significant reduction in surface energy over time in all groups. In most comparisons, the glazed groups showed significantly higher surface energy values compared with the unglazed control group. At the final time point, the unglazed test group showed a significantly higher surface energy value than the unglazed control group; and the glazed test group showed a significantly higher surface energy value compared with the glazed control group. The resins that received CHX had a significantly lower amount of biofilm., Conclusions: Color values were clinically acceptable in all tested groups. At both time points, the roughness values were clinically acceptable only in the glazed groups. Glaze increased the microhardness of the specimens. Microhardness and surface energy were reduced over time in all groups. Chlorhexidine can help prevent microhardness degradation. Glaze and CHX can increase surface energy. Chlorhexidine reduced the amount of bacterial biofilm.

Objective: This study reports a clinical case of rehabilitation of a patient who had her left little finger amputated at the mesial phalanx because of a gunshot wound. The finger prosthesis was custom- made using a silicone., Case Description: This study presents a clinical case of a female patient who had her left little finger amputated at the mesial phalanx because of a gunshot wound in 2016. The patient was attended at a reference center in maxillofacial rehabilitation in the city of Brasilia, Distrito Federal, Brazil, for the manufacture of a finger prosthesis. After molding, a finger waxing was obtained using the right little finger as a template. The waxing was later adjusted on the plaster model of the affected stump. The prosthesis was manufactured with silicone and intrinsically stained with a makeup powder. A water-based adhesive and a ring were used to generate a slight compression so that the prosthesis was retained on the stump., Outcomes: The rehabilitation showed satisfactory levels of stability, retention, and aesthetics, and it was usable and clinically acceptable, as observed in a follow-up appointment in February 2020., Conclusions: The complete or partial reestablishment of functions performed by important structures, such as the fingers, is essential to increase the quality of life of individuals, improving their performance of daily activities. In addition, reporting on this public health problem allows scientific advancement in the area., (Copyright © 2022 International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics.)

- Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the influence of new complete dentures (CDs) and new removable partial dentures (RPDs) on oral health-related quality of life, dry mouth sensation, and anxiety level of their wearers., Materials and Methods: In total, 20 complete edentulous patients (in both arches) that needed to be rehabilitated with new CDs, and 20 partial edentulous patients (in both arches) that needed to be rehabilitated with new RPDs, were included in this study. Each patient must wear the same pair of CDs or RPDs for more than 5 years. Oral health-related quality of life, dry mouth sensation, and level of anxiety were assessed by using the following questionnaires: Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI), VAS (Visual Analog Scale) Xerostomia Questionnaire, and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). These questionnaires were applied before oral rehabilitation (initially initial time point) and 3 months after insertion of new dentures (end time point)., Statistical Analysis: For the results of STAI-State, STAI-Trait, and GOHAI, the Wilcoxon test was applied to compare the time points. For the results of the VAS xerostomia questionnaire, two-way repeated measures ANOVA (analysis of variance) was applied, followed by the Tukey test. The p -values lower than 0.05 were considered statistically significant., Results: /CONCLUSION: For both groups, it was observed that 3 months after the insertion of new removable dentures: (1) there was an increase in oral health-related quality of life; (2) there was a reduction in anxiety (trait anxiety and state anxiety); and (3) there was a perception of greater salivation., Competing Interests: None declared., (The Author(s). - Abstract
Objectives: The aim of this study was to verify during facial expressions ("happy," "sad," "fearful," "angry," "surprised," and "disgusted") if: (1) there would be difference in the electromyography (EMG) of the occipitofrontalis, temporal, masseter, and sternocleidomastoid muscles on the normal side (NS) compared with the affected side (AS) (without the use of an ocular prosthesis) in individuals with unilateral absence of the eyeball, and (2) the rehabilitation with a new ocular prosthesis would affect the EMG of the muscles studied on the AS in these individuals., Materials and Methods: Thirteen individuals, without temporomandibular disorder, with good health, with unilateral absence of the eyeball (the eye must have been removed by evisceration or enucleation), and users or nonusers of an ocular prosthesis were included. EMG of the occipitofrontalis, temporal, masseter, and sternocleidomastoid muscles was performed during rest and facial expressions ("happy," "sad," "fearful," "angry," "surprised," and "disgusted") before (T0) and 90 days after (T1) rehabilitation with a new ocular prosthesis. The analyses were performed in T0 on NS and AS (without the use of an ocular prosthesis), and in T1 on AS with the new ocular prosthesis., Statistical Analysis: All data were submitted to the Student's t -test with p < 0.05., Results: There was no statistically significant difference comparing the AS with the NS in T0 for all muscles studied, during all facial expressions evaluated ( p > 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference comparing the AS in T0 with itself in T1 for all muscles studied, during all facial expressions evaluated ( p > 0.05)., Conclusion: Eye loss did not affect the EMG of studied muscles when comparing NS with AS (without the use of an ocular prosthesis). The rehabilitation with ocular prosthesis was not capable of changing the EMG on AS., Competing Interests: None declared., (The Author(s).
