astrophysics - Abstract
The next decade presents a unique moment in the history of planetary astronomy. For the first time, we have the technologies at hand to discover and characterize a wide range of exoplanetary systems, possibly harboring true Earth analogues. The opportunity is no less than answering humanity’s millennia old questions of “Are we alone?” and “How did we get here?”. The best part: Canada can play a leading role in this historic endeavor, if we make deliberate strategic investments over the next decade. In this white paper, we lay out pathways to develop the necessary instrumentation in collaboration with national and international partners to address the most fundamental questions regarding the formation of planets, the diversity of planetary systems, and the frequency of life in the universe. We recommend critical investments in a portfolio of assets including high-dispersion coronagraphy instrumentation for the upcoming ground based 30-meter class telescopes, a strong (JWST-scale) Canadian involvement in the next generation space missions LUVOIR or HabEx, and support for small and large space missions led by Canada. Importantly, while the science case of searching for biomarkers on rocky exoplanets presents the most stringent design requirements, the proposed instrumentation will also be ideal for the characterization of giant exoplanets, sub-Neptunes, and super-Earths and address a wide range of science questions in the coming decade., White paper identifier W065

The objective was to compare gamithromycin (GAM) and ceftiofur crystalline free acid (CCFA) metaphylaxis for controlling bovine respiratory disease (BRD) impacts in auction market-derived steers. Steers (n=240; initial BW = 537.54 ± 60.61 lb [243.82 ± 27.49 kg]) were randomly allocated to 16 pastures randomized to the 2 treatment groups. Caretakers and data analyst were masked to treatments. Data were analyzed using linear models with means ( ± standard errors of means) reported. Following metaphylaxis, 16 steers (GAM, n=3; CCFA, n=13) required treatment for BRD. Mean BRD morbidity was higher (P=0.03) in the CCFA group (10.83 ± 2.84%) compared to the GAM group (2.50 ± 1.43%). Four steers in each group died or were removed from the 59-day trial due to non-BRD health reasons. Average daily gain in steers finishing the study was greater (P=0.03) in GAM (2.90 ± 0.09 lb [1.32 ± 0.04 kg]) vs CCFA (2.57 ± 0.09 lb [1.17 ± 0.04 kg]) steers. Mean net return per head for steers finishing the study was greater (P≤0.01) for GAM ($22.34 ± 6.75) vs CCFA (-$6.67 ± 6.75). Overall, steers administered GAM metaphylaxis had lower morbidity, increased weight gain, and increased net revenue, compared to those given CCFA., The Bovine Practitioner, Vol. 53, No. 1 (2019 Spring)

Abstract: Hypertension during pregnancy represents an important cause of perinatal morbimortality. Prehypertension has been linked to cardiovascular morbidity in non-pregnant women. The objective of this study was to assess the association between prehypertension and the development of adverse perinatal outcomes in apparently healthy pregnant women. Methods Historical cohort study. Setting: High complexity institutions located in Bogotá, Colombia. Population: Women with less than 20 weeks gestation, single live fetus, with two or more abnormal blood pressure measurements (systolic 120-139 mmHg/diastolic 80-89 mmHg) with six hours apart. Patients with prior diseases, pregnancy resulting from assisted reproduction, or with a diagnosis of fetal abnormality were excluded. Analysis: Baseline characteristics and pregnancy outcomes were retrieved from the computerized medical record. Gestational age was determined by last menstrual period and confirmed by ultrasound. Exposed and non-exposed cohorts were compared. An exploratory univariate regression analysis was performed, and multiple logistic regression was applied, adjusting for the presence of confounding variables. Results The two groups were similar in terms of sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. Adjusted and non-adjusted odds ratios together with the 95% confidence intervals were reported. Controlling for maternal age, scholarly, socioeconomic and civil status, social security, parity, drug abuse and weight gain, it was found that prehypertension was a factor associated with the development of hypertensive disorders (ORa 3.54, 95% CI 1.83–6.83) and hospital care during pregnancy (ORa 2.35, 95% CI 1.16–4.76). Conclusion/Implications Although women with prehypertension are currently classified as normal, prehypertension in the first half of pregnancy increases the likelihood of adverse perinatal outcomes Otra

In several countries this problem has been mitigated with the implementation of Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS), which reduces o retains runoff through different structures, practices and techniques. This problem has been widely studied for flat cities, but it’s also presented for mountain cities. The most common cause reported in the literature is the lack of hydraulic capacity of to the sewage system; however, in mountain cities the topographic conditions generate high flow velocities, consequently, discharges peaks are superior to discharges designed. This is the hypothesis of the present work which storm floods in mountain basins are due to a problem of surface velocity. This phenomenon is also seen within the sewage system, in where the flow velocities are also high whereby it increases the peak discharge and shortens the time to reach this peak. To review this problem is chosen the study area of the city of Manizales, a city located in the Colombian Andes. Firstly, it is proposed a simple methodology for storm flood diagnosis that includes historical analysis of the flood registers, and these are reviewed with respect to the topographic conditions of the city; in the case of Manizales there is a relationship between both. Second, to review this problem within the sewage network is propose a hydrodynamic modelling implemented in SWMM for a basin type of the city, in this case the Palogrande-Ruta 30 basin (likewise known as San Luis-Ruta 30 basin); in the results of the modeling the previous approach is reinforced presenting floods quickly. With the model is reviewed the second objective, which is to find the SUDS that adapt to the conditions of the mountain basin: high slopes, lack of space and avoid infiltration due to it favors landslides, a common problem in the city. For which there are proposed green roofs and rain barrel, obtaining the performance is better for the green roofs that retain more runoff than the rain barrel, with a decrease in peak flow more than 25% (requirement of the regulations) Maestría

//Abstract: Banana crop is one of the most important assets worldwide and for the Colombian economy is the third most traded export product. However, throughout the banana production history the crop has been threatened by several pathogenic agents, one of them is Fusarium oxysporum, which produces the banana vascular wilt also called Panama disease. The goal of this research is to characterize samples of Fusarium oxysporum isolated from soil in Valle del Cauca department. The samples were taken from the municipalities of Alcalá, Sevilla and Caicedonia, then the samples were analyzed in the Laboratory of Phytosanitary Diagnostic in Valle del Cauca, and finally a questionnaire was applied to farmers in order to analyze the crop management and its relationship with the disease presence. As a result of the isolation from farm soil samples and posterior morphological characterization the fungi was found in 19 out of 33 farms. The molecular identification of the 19 sampled farms was conducted by sequencing DNA associated with both ITS region and TEF-1α gene. The resulting sequences were compared with sequences deposited in Genbank. Analysis of sequences was processed with the software MEGA 6 and using the neighborhood similarity coefficient. Fusarium oxysporum presence was confirmed in 84% percent of the processed samples. Based on the questionnaire it is known that the disease is present in the three municipalities, the farmers confuse the Panama disease symptoms with other pathologies, and the most frequent spreading disease mechanism is dissemination material from contaminated farms. This study identified the collective action of three environmental groups in Colombia; The Environmental Committee in Defense of Life (CADV), the Sembrando Ando Movement (MSA) and the Environmental Agenda in Movement (AAM) through the relationship networks built between its agents and its main repertoires and their effects in the socio-political context. The three movements studied in this study responded to decentralized decision-making, heterogeneity and diversity. They have developed through the relationship with their contexts, maintaining their basic organization. Similarly, these movements have created networks of relationships with hierarchical entities, such as political parties, corporations, and state institutions. These differences and multiplicity of actors gave rise to the heterogeneity of the movements in question. Secondly, this work explored the different repertoires from which movements (CADV), (MSA) and (AAM) articulated demands. These repertoires were analyzed from these connection processes and context in which they were developed. In the context of the repertoires it was verified that the movements not only responded to a set of individual performances, but through a connector process with different organizations, institutions and “actantes”, they gave different formats to their repertoires. In this sense, although the movements were influenced by the context, not only were they waiting for a favorable or unfavorable event to act, from their strategic connections with other agents, they create their own possibilities of action. In this sense, it was observed that the three groups under study in this research involved connections that collaborated in the creation, development and innovation of their repertoires and that these were combined with other forms of repertoires. Thus, heterogeneous network actors, with different political colors, from different social sectors, with different participatory and organizational experiences are able to articulate innovating the action of their movements and the time being influenced by them.

Article - Abstract
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an estimated 303,000 neonates die within their first month of age every year globally as a result of a birth defect. Neural tube defects, serious birth defects of the brain and spine, are among the most common and severe of these birth defects. Since some low- and middle-income countries lack comprehensive, accurate data documenting the burden of these defects, providing technical assistance to help build birth defects surveillance programs can accelerate the collection of data needed to demonstrate this burden and advance prevention initiatives. We developed a birth defects surveillance toolkit, a technical assistance tool for country staff to help them implement birth defects surveillance. An evaluation of the toolkit with partners in Africa was conducted to assess perceptions of the usefulness, effectiveness, and policy impact of the surveillance toolkit and surveillance-related technical assistance provided to countries thus far. Overall, respondents provided very positive feedback about the toolkit components. Recommendations for improvement included customization to country contexts, such as photos reflective of African babies; surveillance examples from other countries; and consistent use of terms.

CONFIDENCE intervals ,PREMATURE infants ,HUMAN abnormalities ,PREGNANCY outcomes ,URBAN hospitals ,LOW birth weight ,INFANT death ,CHI-squared test ,DISEASE prevalence ,DESCRIPTIVE statistics ,ODDS ratio ,LOGISTIC regression analysis - Abstract
Background: Uganda has one of the highest adolescent pregnancy rates in sub-Saharan Africa. We compared the risk of adverse birth outcomes between adolescents (age 12–19 years) and mothers (age 20–34 years) in four urban hospitals. Methods: Maternal demographics, HIV status, and birth outcomes of all live births, stillbirths, and spontaneous abortions delivered from August 2015 to December 2018 were extracted from a hospital-based birth defects surveillance database. Differences in the distributions of maternal and infant characteristics by maternal age groups were tested with Pearson's chi-square. Adjusted odds ratios (aORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated using logistic regression to compare the prevalence of adverse birth outcomes among adolescents to mothers 20–34 years. Results: A total of 100,189 births were analyzed, with 11.1% among adolescent mothers and 89.0% among older mothers. Adolescent mothers had an increased risk of preterm delivery (aOR: 1.14; CI 1.06–1.23), low birth weight (aOR: 1.46; CI 1.34–1.59), and early neonatal deaths (aOR: 1.58; CI 1.23–2.02). Newborns of adolescent mothers had an increased risk of major external birth defects (aOR: 1.33; CI 1.02–1.76), specifically, gastroschisis (aOR: 3.20; CI 1.12–9.13) compared to mothers 20–34 years. The difference between the prevalence of gastroschisis among adolescent mothers (7.3 per 10,000 births; 95% CI 3.7–14.3) was statistically significant when compared to mothers 20–34 years (1.6 per 10,000 births; 95% CI 0.9–2.6). Conclusions: This study found that adolescent mothers had an increased risk for several adverse birth outcomes compared to mothers 20–34 years, similar to findings in the region and globally. Interventions are needed to improve birth outcomes in this vulnerable population. Plain English Summary: Adolescent pregnancies are a global problem occurring in high-, middle-, and low-income countries with Uganda having one of the highest adolescent pregnancy rates in sub-Saharan Africa. We compared the risk of adverse birth outcomes, including major external birth defects, between adolescents, (age 12–19 years) and mothers (age 20–34 years) in four urban hospitals. All informative births, including live births, stillbirths, and spontaneous abortions; regardless of gestational age, delivered at four selected hospitals in Kampala from August 2015 to December 2018 were examined. Demographic data were obtained by midwives through maternal interviews and review of hospital patient notes. Of the 100,189 births, 11.0% were among adolescent mothers and 89.0% among mothers (20–34 years). Adolescent mothers were more likely than mothers (20–34 years) to have an infant with preterm delivery, low birth weight, early neonatal death, and major external birth defects. Adolescent pregnancies were also associated with an increased risk of gastroschisis when compared to mothers (20–34 years). In conclusion, this study found that adolescent mothers had an increased risk for several adverse birth outcomes compared to mothers 20–34 years. Research on the potential underlying causes or mechanisms for these adverse outcomes among adolescent births is necessary to identify possible interventions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

After Zika virus (ZIKV) infection in Costa Rica was con- firmed in January 2016, the national surveillance system was enhanced to monitor associated birth defects. To characterize the ZIKV outbreak among live-born infants during March 2016-March 2018, we conducted a descriptive analysis. Prevalence of ZIKV-associated birth defects was 15.3 cases/100,000 live births. Among 22 infants with ZIKV-associated birth defects, 11 were designated as confirmed (positive for ZIKV) and 11 were designated as probable cases (negative for ZIKV or not tested, but mother was exposed to ZIKV during pregnancy). A total of 91% had microcephaly (head circumference >2 SDs below mean for age and sex), 64% severe microcephaly (head circumference >3 SDs below mean for age and sex), 95% neurodevelopmental abnormalities, 82% brain anomalies, 41% eye abnormalities, and 9% hearing loss. Monitoring children for >1 year can increase identification of ZIKV-associated abnormalities in addition to microcephaly. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Thousands of exoplanets have now been discovered with a huge range of masses, sizes and orbits: from rocky Earth-like planets to large gas giants grazing the surface of their host star. However, the essential nature of these exoplanets remains largely mysterious: there is no known, discernible pattern linking the presence, size, or orbital parameters of a planet to the nature of its parent star. We have little idea whether the chemistry of a planet is linked to its formation environment, or whether the type of host star drives the physics and chemistry of the planet’s birth, and evolution. ARIEL was conceived to observe a large number (~1000) of transiting planets for statistical understanding, including gas giants, Neptunes, super-Earths and Earth-size planets around a range of host star types using transit spectroscopy in the 1.25–7.8 μm spectral range and multiple narrow-band photometry in the optical. ARIEL will focus on warm and hot planets to take advantage of their well-mixed atmospheres which should show minimal condensation and sequestration of high-Z materials compared to their colder Solar System siblings. Said warm and hot atmospheres are expected to be more representative of the planetary bulk composition. Observations of these warm/hot exoplanets, and in particular of their elemental composition (especially C, O, N, S, Si), will allow the understanding of the early stages of planetary and atmospheric formation during the nebular phase and the following few million years. ARIEL will thus provide a representative picture of the chemical nature of the exoplanets and relate this directly to the type and chemical environment of the host star. ARIEL is designed as a dedicated survey mission for combined-light spectroscopy, capable of observing a large and well-defined planet sample within its 4-year mission lifetime. - Abstract
The stability of Earth's climate on geological timescales is enabled by the carbon-silicate cycle that acts as a negative feedback mechanism stabilizing surface temperatures via the intake and outgas of atmospheric carbon. On Earth, this thermostat is enabled by plate tectonics that sequesters outgassed CO2 back into the mantle via weathering and subduction at convergent margins. Here we propose a separate tectonic mechanism -- vertical recycling -- that can serve as the vehicle for CO2 outgassing and sequestration over long timescales. The mechanism requires continuous tidal heating, which makes it particularly relevant to planets in the habitable zone of M stars. Dynamical models of this vertical recycling scenario and stability analysis show that temperate climates stable over Gy timescales are realized for a variety of initial conditions, even as the M star dims over time. The magnitude of equilibrium surface temperatures depends on the interplay of sea weathering and outgassing, which in turn depends on planetary carbon content, so that planets with lower carbon budgets are favoured for temperate conditions. Habitability of planets such as found in the Trappist-1 may be rooted in tidally-driven tectonics., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, Accepted in Astrophysical Journal

- Abstract
Crater counting on the Moon and other bodies is crucial to constrain the dynamical history of the Solar System. This has traditionally been done by visual inspection of images, thus limiting the scope, efficiency, and/or accuracy of retrieval. In this paper we demonstrate the viability of using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to determine the positions and sizes of craters from Lunar digital elevation maps (DEMs). We recover 92% of craters from the human-generated test set and almost double the total number of crater detections. Of these new craters, 15% are smaller in diameter than the minimum crater size in the ground-truth dataset. Our median fractional longitude, latitude and radius errors are 11% or less, representing good agreement with the human-generated datasets. From a manual inspection of 361 new craters we estimate the false positive rate of new craters to be 11%. Moreover, our Moon-trained CNN performs well when tested on DEM images of Mercury, detecting a large fraction of craters in each map. Our results suggest that deep learning will be a useful tool for rapidly and automatically extracting craters on various Solar System bodies. We make our code and data publicly available at https://github.com/silburt/DeepMoon.git and https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.1133969 ., Comment: 41 pages, 5 figures, Accepted for publication in Icarus. - Abstract
Habitable planets are commonly imagined to be temperate planets like Earth, with areas of open ocean and warm land. In contrast, planets in snowball states, where oceans are entirely ice-covered, are believed to be inhospitable. However, we show using a general circulation model that terrestrial planets in the inner habitable zone are able to support large unfrozen areas of land while in a snowball state. Due to their lower albedo, these unfrozen regions reach summer temperatures in excess of 10 $^\circ$Celsius. Such conditions permit CO$_2$ weathering, suggesting that continental weathering can provide a mechanism for trapping planets in stable snowball states. The presence of land areas with warm temperatures and liquid surface water motivates a more-nuanced understanding of habitability during these snowball events., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures; significant revisions after peer review (including changed title and abstract); accepted for publication in Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets

- Abstract
Here is presented a HEC-HMS hydrological modeling in a small experimental urban watershed, located in a mountainous area of the city of Manizales, Colombia. The study is realized to determine hydrological response in high mountain urban watersheds, where urbanization has created an acute problem relating to floods. This process has produced changes in natural dynamics of watersheds, resulting increases in runoff volumes, peak flows and flow velocities, what in turn increases the floods risk. This problem is most critical in urban mountain watersheds, due to steep slopes, it rises even more flow velocities. From the analysis in the selected watershed, it was found that land use exerts greater control over the hydrological response than high slopes., Este trabajo presenta una modelación hidrológica con HEC-HMS de una pequeña cuenca experimental urbana, ubicada en zona montañosa de la ciudad de Manizales, Colombia. Background: Zika virus (ZIKV) infection during pregnancy can cause infant brain and eye abnormalities and has been associated with adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes in exposed infants. Evidence is limited on ZIKV's effects on children infected postnatally within the first year of life. Objective: To determine whether any adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes occurred in early childhood for children infected postnatally with ZIKV during infancy, given the neurotoxicity of ZIKV infection and the rapid brain development that occurs in infancy and early childhood. Methods: The Colombia Instituto Nacional de Salud (INS) conducted health and developmental screenings between September and November 2017 to evaluate 60 children at ages 20-30 months who had laboratory-confirmed symptomatic postnatal ZIKV infection at ages 1-12 months. We examined the frequency of adverse neurologic, hearing, eye, and developmental outcomes as well as the relationship between age at Zika symptom onset and developmental outcomes. Results: Nine of the 60 (15.0%) children had adverse outcomes on the neurologic, hearing, or eye examination. Six of the 47 (12.8%) children without these adverse findings, and who received a valid developmental screening, had an alert score in the hearing-language domain which signals the need for additional developmental evaluation. Conclusion: Neurologic, hearing, eye, and developmental findings suggest reassuring results. Since the full spectrum of neurodevelopmental outcomes in children postnatally infected with ZIKV remains unknown, routine paediatric care is advised to monitor the development of these children to ensure early identification of any adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. The Near-InfraRed Planet Searcher (NIRPS) is a new ultra-stable infrared (YJH) spectrograph that will be installed on ESO’s 3.6-metre Telescope in La Silla, Chile. Aiming to achieve a precision of 1 m s–1, NIRPS is designed to find rocky planets orbiting M dwarfs, and will operate together with the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS), also on the 3.6-metre Telescope. In this article we describe the NIRPS science cases and present its main technical characteristics., Published in The Messenger vol. 169, pp. 21-27, September 2017.

- Abstract
Objectives Using the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) classification guidelines, we characterized coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)–associated confirmed and probable deaths in Puerto Rico during March–July 2020. We also estimated the total number of possible deaths due to COVID-19 in Puerto Rico during the same period. Methods We described data on COVID-19–associated mortality, in which the lower bound was the sum of confirmed and probable COVID-19 deaths and the upper bound was excess mortality, estimated as the difference between observed deaths and average expected deaths. We obtained data from the Puerto Rico Department of Health COVID-19 Mortality Surveillance System, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Electronic Disease Surveillance System Base System, and the National Center for Health Statistics. Results During March–July 2020, 225 COVID-19–associated deaths were identified in Puerto Rico (119 confirmed deaths and 106 probable deaths). The median age of decedents was 73 (interquartile range, 59-83); 60 (26.7%) deaths occurred in the Metropolitana region, and 140 (62.2%) deaths occurred among men. Of the 225 decedents, 180 (83.6%) had been hospitalized and 93 (41.3%) had required mechanical ventilation. Influenza and pneumonia (48.0%), sepsis (28.9%), and respiratory failure (27.1%) were the most common conditions contributing to COVID-19 deaths based on death certificates. Based on excess mortality calculations, as many as 638 COVID-19–associated deaths could have occurred during the study period, up to 413 more COVID-19–associated deaths than originally reported. Conclusions Including probable deaths per the CSTE guidelines and monitoring all-cause excess mortality can lead to a better estimation of COVID-19–associated deaths and serve as a model to enhance mortality surveillance in other US jurisdictions.

Objective: To explore the association between prehypertension and the development of perinatal complications. Methods: Retrospective cohort study (n = 293) that included pregnant women over 18 years of age carrying a single fetus of a gestational age of less than 20 weeks. Participants with chronic disease, assisted reproduction, fetal anomalies, early gestational loss, multiple pregnancy or who were delivered in a different institution were excluded. Pregnant women with and without prehypertension were compared. Multiple logistic regression was carried out. Results: Prehypertension increased the incidence of hypertensive disorders (aOR 3.54, 95% CI 1.83-6.83) and hospitalization (aOR 2.41, 95% CI 1.17-4.95). No differences were found for other perinatal complications. Conclusions: Prehypertension increases the incidence of hypertensive disorders and hospitalization during pregnancy. SOMATOMEDIN C , *ESTROGEN , *BODY mass index , *WAIST circumference - Abstract
Purpose: Recent reports show that girls with higher body mass index (BMI) have an earlier puberty onset (thelarche). It has been suggested that earlier puberty is a consequence of higher levels of estrogen due to increased aromatization of androgens in adipose tissue. Thus, we aimed to assess the relation between serum levels of estrogen and excess weight (BMI ≥1SD) and central adiposity (>75th percentile for waist circumference) in prepubertal girls at age 7. Materials and Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study within the Growth and Obesity Cohort Study of 1190 low-middle income children from Santiago, Chile. We selected a random sample of 107 prepubertal girls at age 7. A trained dietitian measured weight, height and waist circumference. Additionally, a fasting blood sample was collected to measure serum levels of estradiol equivalents (via ultrasensitive recombinant cell bioassay), dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), insulin, insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), and leptin. Results: Excess weight was observed in 40% of our sample; 11.2% had high central adiposity, and the mean level of estradiol equivalents was 3.6 ± 2.3 pg/ml. In the univariate and multivariate analyzes, we did not observe an association between excess weight, central adiposity and estradiol equivalent levels; however, insulin was inversely associated with the serum level of estradiol equivalents. Conclusions: Our participants had a mean level of estradiol equivalents of 3.6 pg/ml (±2.3 pg/ml) at the pre-pubertal stage. However, with the exception of insulin, we did not observe an association between estradiol equivalents and markers of adiposity and metabolic and hormonal factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
