201. Bend 3d mixed virtual element method for Darcy problems

Abstract

In this study, we propose a virtual element scheme to solve the Darcy problem in three physical dimensions. The main novelty is that curved elements are naturally handled without any degradation of the solution accuracy. Indeed, in presence of curved boundaries, or internal interfaces, the geometrical error introduced by planar approximations may dominate the convergence rate limiting the benefit of high-order approximations. We consider the Darcy problem in its mixed form to directly obtain accurate and mass conservative fluxes without any post-processing. An important step to derive the proposed scheme is the integration over curved polyhedrons, here presented and discussed. Finally, we show the theoretical analysis of the scheme as well as several numerical examples to support our findings.

Abstract

We report the properties of sodium (Na) and aluminum (Al) cosmic rays in the rigidity range 2.15 GV to 3.0 TV based on 0.46 million sodium and 0.51 million aluminum nuclei collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer experiment on the International Space Station. We found that Na and Al, together with nitrogen (N), belong to a distinct cosmic ray group. In this group, we observe that, similar to the N flux, both the Na flux and Al flux are well described by the sums of a primary cosmic ray component (proportional to the silicon flux) and a secondary cosmic ray component (proportional to the fluorine flux). The fraction of the primary component increases with rigidity for the N, Na, and Al fluxes and becomes dominant at the highest rigidities. The Na/Si and Al/Si abundance ratios at the source, 0.036±0.003 for Na/Si and 0.103±0.004 for Al/Si, are determined independent of cosmic ray propagation.

Abstract

As urbanisation accelerates, the urban landscape reshapes at a fast pace. Consequently, the urban built environment continuously evolves horizontally as well as vertically. However, more attention in the field of spatial analysis is given to horizontal dynamics, despite the importance of geoinformation in the vertical dimension. 3D modelling methods have gained popularity due to their powerful capability of capturing and analysing geoinformation in the vertical dimension and visualising objects lifelike in the urban built environment. Various urban applications with diverse 3D modelling methods at different research scales and purposes have emerged. However, there is no systematic overview of these different modelling methods. Therefore, it is imperative to provide an up-to-date review of these advances. In this paper, we aim to review urban 3D modelling methods widely used in the prior 5-year period (2015–2020). Our analysis focuses on five attributes, i.e., basic characteristics, data requirements, technical requirements, users requirements and ethical considerations. The discussion presents the current status of 3D modelling methods – a wide range of applications yet with substantial development potential. This paper closes with insights for future work regarding the necessities of 3D data structure support as well as interdisciplinary research, specifically for big data management and integration.

Abstract

This paper presents our contribution to the development of a standardized 3D input data model for solar photovoltaic potential estimation. Presently, different input data and processing steps influence the calculation for estimating the potential of solar energy in the Netherlands. The variety in characteristics of input data and issues with temporal accuracy extracted from the national registers and databases makes it challenging to obtain a consistent and reliable result. To address this issue, we created a point cloud dataset that integrated from LiDAR point cloud and dense image matching which is complete, recent and positionally accurate. Furthermore, we made a 3D building model from the integrated point cloud and identified the effect of finer resolution in the photovoltaic potential analysis.

Abstract

With the rapid urbanization and the dynamics in land transactions, Turkish cadastre, as in many other countries, is facing challenges in the daily recording of sales, donations, taxations, and mortgages on land. Especially with the modern constructions and complex interrelationships of rights, restrictions, and responsibilities (RRR), the third dimension should not be forgotten. In this context, the design of a new cadastre data model for Turkey is essential. Inspired by this need, with this study, we aim in proposing a new cadastre model based on international standards such as Land Administration Data Model (LADM) and CityGML. LADM represents the legal and administrative aspects of the cadastral objects but does not show the semantic and 3D geometrical representation of physical cadastral objects which are required for the process of 3D cadastre. Therefore, in the paper, we propose an Application Domain Extension (ADE) for the cadastral objects that expands the integration of LADM and CityGML data model with the legal and administrative concepts defined in the Turkish Law. The study presents a detailed overview of the Turkish legal cadastre system and a proposal for its physical realization based on international standards. In addition, the developed ADE is also valuable for cadastral services undertaken by the General Directorate of Land Registry and Cadastre (GDLRC). It could also be used as a basis of a 3D national data standard for cadastral information systems.

Abstract

El presente artículo presenta el análisis de datos en una carga eléctrica para obtener la optimización del valor de la carga eléctrica que permita la máxima transferencia de potencia de un circuito a la carga, modelado mediante un equivalente de thévenin. Para el estudio se tomaron datos experimentales en un circuito para el cual la carga varía mediante un potenciómetro que se instala a un circuito considerado como caja negra, con lo que se encontraron unos datos experimentales de potencia en la carga en función de la resistencia de carga. Al tomar datos experimentales se tiene presente ubicar una condición de optimización de tres puntos, es decir, una concavidad encerrada por tres datos experimentales, para empezar un método de optimización por sección dorada o por método polinomial de Powell.

Este artículo plantea un desarrollo didáctico de solución de tres sistemas análogos circuitales: eléctricos, magnéticos y térmicos, los cuales presentan una correspondencia estructural y funcional en términos de las ecuaciones que rigen sus dominios. El conocimiento y manejo de un dominio puede servir como soporte para facilitar la enseñanza y aprendizaje de un dominio nuevo, llamado blanco [1], que comparte estructuras o ecuaciones semejantes del comportamiento de los mismos, por lo que sus respuestas físicas se resuelven con el mismo método; en este caso, con el de elementos finitos [2].

en el presente documento se dan a conocer tres de los diferentes modelos de propagación en entornos urbanos, adaptados al entorno de la universidad, y se analizan las pérdidas de propagación de cada uno de ellos con respecto a la estación base (La Magdalena), que es la que tiene mejor cobertura en la Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas en Bogotá (Colombia). Se verifica que la potencia de recepción, tomada en diferentes puntos de la universidad (con un teléfono celular y su respectivo GPS), es mayor que la sensibilidad, y se evalúan estos datos con los obtenidos por cada modelo.

Abstract

La biomatemática o biología matemática es el estudio de fenómenos biológicos mediante herramientas matemáticas de diversa complejidad. Para modelarlos y analizarlos se usan ecuaciones diferenciales ordinarias, ecuaciones diferenciales parciales y/o ecuaciones diferenciales estocásticas. En este tópico interesa investigar la evolución de las especies y la relación con su ambiente (depredación, competencia, presencia y calidad del alimento, simbiosis y mutualismo, etc.), para predecir la evolución futura de los ecosistemas, sometidos a ciertas condiciones, e introducir técnicas de control en estos. En este artículo nos enfocaremos en presentar la versión determinista y estocástica de una variante del modelo Lotka-Volterra depredadorpresa para dos poblaciones, consistente en el sistema de ecuaciones diferenciales simultáneas, donde x e y representan el número de presas y predadores, respectivamente, con A, B, C, D constantes positivas que reflejan las condiciones de crecimiento de las especies y sus interacciones. El estudio de estos temas resulta ser de importancia en áreas como: el manejo de recursos renovables, la evolución de variedades resistentes a pesticidas, los fenómenos de sustitución tecnológica, el cambio organizativo o el aprendizaje organizativo.

216. Glucocorticoid receptor gene polymorphisms and potential association to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease susceptibility and severity

Abstract

Abstract Objective As chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is known for poor glucocorticoid (GC) response, we hypothesized that polymorphic variants of the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) gene might predispose for COPD and/or disease severity. Materials and methods Three out of about 50 of the most abundant receptor GR gene polymorphisms were investigated in a case-control study which included 207 patients with chronic bronchitis or COPD (mean FEV1 50.5% predicted, GOLD I-IV) and 106 age matched healthy subjects (mean FEV1 101.8% predicted). These were genotyped: a) for the N363S (Exon 2; 1220 A > G (I)); b) the BCLI restriction fragment length polymorphism (Intron 2; 647 C > G (II)); and c) the ER2223EK (Exon 2; 198, 200 G > A (III)), using RT-PCR and PCR-RFLP method on genomic DNA isolated from EDTA blood. Results Genotype distribution between COPD and healthy subjects were alike in all of these three polymorphisms. N363S was found in 0.94% of the healthy and 0% of the COPD subjects. BCLI was detected in 11.3% of the controls and 15.5% of the COPD patients whereas heterozygote frequency was less in the COPD (44.4%) group (controls 60.4%). ER2223EK lacks in any of the study subjects. Further, SNPs did not correlate with COPD severity stage (GOLD), exacerbation rates, and clinical course. Conclusion COPD is not linked to gene polymorphisms N363S, BCLI-RFLP, and ER2223EK. Since we analyzed only these 3 receptor gene polymorphisms, this study cannot rule out that other GR gene variants and linkages may be of influence.

217. Anti-inflammatory effects of myrtol standardized and other essential oils on alveolar macrophages from patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Abstract

Abstract Introduction Myrtol standardized is established in the treatment of acute and chronic bronchitis and sinusitis. It increases mucociliar clearance and has muco-secretolytic effects. Additional anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties have been confirmed for Myrtol standardized, eucalyptus oil, and orange oil in several in vitro studies. Objective The aim of this study was to prove the ability of essential oils to reduce cytokines release and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production derived from ex vivo cultured alveolar macrophages. Material and methods Alveolar macrophages from patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD, n = 26, GOLD III-IV) were pre-cultured with essential oils (10-3-10-8%) for 1 h and then stimulated with LPS (1 μg/ml). After 4 h and 20 h respectively a) cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) using 2',7'-dichlorofluorescein (DCF), and b) TNF-α, IL-8, and GM-CSF secretion were quantified. Results In comparison with negative controls, pre-cultured Myrtol, eucalyptus oil and orange oil (10-4%) reduced in the LPS-activated alveolar macrophages ROS release significantly after 1+20 h as follows: Myrtol - 17.7% (P = 0.05), eucalyptus oil -21.8% (P < 0.01) and orange oil -23.6% (P < 0.01). Anti-oxidative efficacy was comparable to NAC (1 mmol/l). Essential oils also induced a TNF-α reduction: Myrtol (-37.3%, P < 0.001), eucalyptus oil (-26.8%, P < 0.01) and orange oil (-26.6%, P < 0.01). TNF-α reduction at 1+4 h and 1+20 h did not vary (Myrtol: -31.9% and -37.3% respectively, P = 0.372) indicating that this effect occurs early and cannot be further stimulated. Myrtol reduced the release of GMCSF by -35.7% and that of IL-8 only inconsiderably. Conclusions All essential oils tested have effective antioxidative properties in ex vivo cultured and LPS-stimulated alveolar macrophages. Additionally, Myrtol inhibited TNF-α and GM-CSF release best indicating additional potent anti-inflammator y activity.

Se presenta el caso clínico de la migración intravesical de dispositivo intrauterino con litiasis vesical secundaria. El diagnóstico se realizó 20 años después de la inserción del dispositivo, por la aparición de síntomas urinarios bajos a repetición y hematuria. La ultrasonografía y la radiografía de pelvis son herramientas diagnósticas relevantes en la sospecha inicial de esta patología, que debe siempre completarse con tomografía pélvica y cistoscopia.This is a case report of an intravesical migration of an intrauterine device, with secondary vesical lithiasis. The diagnosis was made 20 years after the insertion of the device, because of the appearance of recurrent low urinary tract symptoms and haematuria. Ultrasonography and pelvic radiography are important diagnostic tools on the initial study of this pathology that must be completed with pelvic tomography and cistoscopy.

Se realiza una revisión comparativa de las políticas y normas existentes a nivel nacional e internacional en relación con la disponibilidad y acceso a medicamentos huérfanos y/o vitales. Adicionalmente se elabora una propuesta de actualización del listado de medicamentos vitales no disponibles a partir de la comparación con las listas de medicamentos huérfanos de Estados Unidos y la Unión Europea, la lista de solicitudes de importación realizadas al Instituto Nacional de Vigilancia de Medicamentos y Alimentos (INVIMA) hasta mayo de 2006, una consulta a prestadores de servicios de salud, aseguradores e importadores y comercializadores de medicamentos vitales, el listado propuesto por la Sala Especializada de Medicamentos de la Comisión Revisora del instituto, así como una revisión de la lista de medicamentos protegidos por el decreto 2085 de 2002 y de las importaciones de medicamentos realizadas por el Ministerio de la Protección Social en el marco de los programas de salud pública. De un total de 107 medicamentos propuestos, 26 coinciden con las listas de medicamentos huérfanos de los países de referencia y 12 se encuentran en condiciones de exclusividad en virtud del Decreto 2085 de 2002.A comparative revision was carried out on the national and international policies and regulations about access of orphan and/or vital drugs. An analysis of: orphan drugs' list from USA, European Union and all applications for importation of not available drugs submitted by the Drug Regulatory Authority (INVIMA) until 2006; an informal consultation with health care providers, insurance companies and distributors of vital medicines, were included, in order to improve the actual vital drugs list within the frame of public health programs. The analysis included all drugs that have been protected by Decree 2085 from 2002, as well as the imported drugs by the Ministry of Social Welfare under the public health program. 26 of 107 proposed drugs match the lists of orphan drugs from the countries analyzed and 12 are protected with exclusivity by decree 2085 from 2002.

The IUD was found during a non-related X-ray examination of lumbar spine. She underwent laparoscopic surgery and removal of the uterine tube, without any further complication. Abstract

HELMOD is a Monte Carlo code developed to describe the transport of Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCRs) through the heliosphere from the interstellar space to the Earth. In the current HELMOD version 4 the modulation process, based on Parker’s equation, is applied to the propagation of GCRs in the inner and outer heliosphere, i.e., including the heliosheath. HELMOD was proved to reproduce protons, nuclei and electrons cosmic rays spectra observed during solar cycles 23–24 by several detectors, for instance, PAMELA, BESS and AMS-02. In particular, the unprecedented accuracy of AMS-02 observations allowed one a better tuning of the description regarding the solar modulation mechanisms implemented in HELMOD. In addition, HELMOD demonstrated to be capable of reproducing the fluxes observed by the Voyager probes in the inner and outer regions of heliosphere up to its border.

Abstract

Precision measurements by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) on the International Space Station of He-3 and He-4 fluxes are presented. The measurements are based on 100 million He-4 nuclei in the rigidity range from 2.1 to 21 GV and 18 million He-3 from 1.9 to 15 GV collected from May 2011 to November 2017. We observed that the He-3 and He-4 fluxes exhibit nearly identical variations with time. The relative magnitude of the variations decreases with increasing rigidity. The rigidity dependence of the He-3/He-4 flux ratio is measured for the first time. Below 4 GV, the He-3/He-4 flux ratio was found to have a significant long-term time dependence. Above 4 GV, the He-3/He-4 flux ratio was found to be time independent, and its rigidity dependence is well described by a single power law proportional to R-Delta with Delta = 0.294 0.004. Unexpectedly, this value is in agreement with the B/O and B/C spectral indices at high energies.

Abstract

Se presenta la experiencia de 18 pacientes sometidas a cirugía laparoscópica por DIU intraabdominal, en las cuales el diagnóstico se realizó por ecotomografía transvaginal y radiografía de pelvis. En todos los casos su extracción se realizó sin complicaciones ni conversión a laparotomía. Se discute el cuadro clínico, diagnóstico, tratamiento y eventuales complicacionesEighteen patients with intra-abdominal DIU whose diagnosis was done by transvaginal ecotomography and pelvic x-ray and in whom the device was drawn by laparoscopic surgery are presented in this study. There was successful procedure in all cases without immediate or ulterior complications and none of them needed conversion to laparotomy. The clinical picture, diagnosis, treatment and eventual complications are discussed

Abstract

Point clouds serve as the raw material for various models, such as Building Information Models (BIM). In this work, we investigate the reconstruction steps needed to create models that can be utilized directly for agent-based simulations. The input data for the reconstruction is captured with an indoor mobile mapping system. To show the prominence of this idea, we run social distancing and evacuation simulations on the reconstructed models. The simulations are run with multiple agents using a vision-based pedestrian model and A∗-based path finding algorithm. The limitations of this approach are discussed. Abstract

We report the properties of sodium (Na) and aluminum (Al) cosmic rays in the rigidity range 2.15 GV to 3.0 TV based on 0.46 million sodium and 0.51 million aluminum nuclei collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer experiment on the International Space Station. We found that Na and Al, together with nitrogen (N), belong to a distinct cosmic ray group. In this group, we observe that, similar to the N flux, both the Na flux and Al flux are well described by the sums of a primary cosmic ray component (proportional to the silicon flux) and a secondary cosmic ray component (proportional to the fluorine flux). The fraction of the primary component increases with rigidity for the N, Na, and Al fluxes and becomes dominant at the highest rigidities. The Na/Si and Al/Si abundance ratios at the source, 0.036 +/- 0.003 for Na/Si and 0.103 +/- 0.004 for Al/Si, are determined independent of cosmic ray propagation. Abstract

We report the observation of new properties of primary iron (Fe) cosmic rays in the rigidity range 2.65 GV to 3.0 TV with 0.62×10⁶ iron nuclei collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer experiment on the International Space Station. Above 80.5 GV the rigidity dependence of the cosmic ray Fe flux is identical to the rigidity dependence of the primary cosmic ray He, C, and O fluxes, with the Fe/O flux ratio being constant at 0.155±0.006. This shows that unexpectedly Fe and He, C, and O belong to the same class of primary cosmic rays which is different from the primary cosmic rays Ne, Mg, and Si class.

Abstract

Precise knowledge of the charge and rigidity dependence of the secondary cosmic ray fluxes and the secondary-to-primary flux ratios is essential in the understanding of cosmic ray propagation. We report the properties of heavy secondary cosmic ray fluorine F in the rigidity \(R\) range 2.15 GV to 2.9 TV based on 0.29 million events collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer experiment on the International Space Station. The fluorine spectrum deviates from a single power law above 200 GV. The heavier secondary-to-primary F/Si flux ratio rigidity dependence is distinctly different from the lighter B/O (or B/C) rigidity dependence. In particular, above 10 GV, the \(\frac{F/Si}{B/O}\) ratio can be described by a power law \(R^{δ}\) with \(δ\)=0.052±0.007. This shows that the propagation properties of heavy cosmic rays, from F to Si, are different from those of light cosmic rays, from He to O, and that the secondary cosmic rays have two classes.

Abstract

The wide usage of GPS-equipped devices enables the mass recording of vehicle movement trajectories describing the movement behavior of the traffic participants. An important aspect of the road traffic is the impact of anomalies, like accidents, on traffic flow. Accidents are especially important as they contribute to the the aspects of safety and also influence travel time estimations. In this paper, the impact of accidents is determined based on a massive GPS trajectory and accident dataset. Due to the missing precise date of the accidents in the data set used, first, the date of the accident is estimated based on the speed profile at the accident time. Further, the temporal impact of the accident is estimated using the speed profile of the whole day. The approach is applied in an experiment on a one month subset of the datasets. The results show that more than 72% of the accident dates are identified and the impact on the temporal dimension is approximated. Moreover, it can be seen that accidents during the rush hours and on high frequency road types (e.g. motorways, trunks or primaries) have an increasing effect on the impact duration on the traffic flow.

Abstract

We present the precision measurement of the daily proton fluxes in cosmic rays from May 20, 2011 to October 29, 2019 (a total of 2824 days or 114 Bartels rotations) in the rigidity interval from 1 to 100 GV based on 5.5 x 10⁹ protons collected with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer aboard the International Space Station. The proton fluxes exhibit variations on multiple timescales. From 2014 to 2018, we observed recurrent flux variations with a period of 27 days. Shorter periods of 9 days and 13.5 days are observed in 2016. The strength of all three periodicities changes with time and rigidity. The rigidity dependence of the 27-day periodicity is different from the rigidity dependences of 9-day and 13.5-day periods. Unexpectedly, the strength of 9-day and 13.5-day periodicities increases with increasing rigidities up to similar to 10 GV and similar to 20 GV, respectively. Then the strength of the periodicities decreases with increasing rigidity up to 100 GV.

Abstract

In many applications the accurate representation of the computational domain is a key factor to obtain reliable and effective numerical solutions. Curved interfaces, which might be internal, related to physical data, or portions of the physical boundary, are often met in real applications. However, they are often approximated leading to a geometrical error that might become dominant and deteriorate the quality of the results. Underground problems often involve the motion of fluids where the fundamental governing equation is the Darcy law. High quality velocity fields are of paramount importance for the successful subsequent coupling with other physical phenomena such as transport. The virtual element method, as solution scheme, is known to be applicable in problems whose discretizations requires cells of general shape, and the mixed formulation is here preferred to obtain accurate velocity fields. To overcome the issues associated to the complex geometries and, at the same time, retaining the quality of the solutions, we present here the virtual element method to solve the Darcy problem, in mixed form, in presence of curved interfaces in two and three dimensions. The numerical scheme is presented in detail explaining the discrete setting with a focus on the treatment of curved interfaces. Examples, inspired from industrial applications, are presented showing the validity of the proposed approach.

Abstract

In this work, we propose an extension of the mixed Virtual Element Method (VEM) for bi-dimensional computational grids with curvilinear edge elements. The approximation by means of rectilinear edges of a domain with curvilinear geometrical feature, such as a portion of domain boundary or an internal interface, may introduce a geometrical error that degrades the expected order of convergence of the scheme. In the present work a suitable VEM approximation space is proposed to consistently handle curvilinear geometrical objects, thus recovering optimal convergence rates. The resulting numerical scheme is presented along with its theoretical analysis and several numerical test cases to validate the proposed approach.

248. Equilibrium analysis of an immersed rigid leaflet by the virtual element method

Abstract

We study, both theoretically and numerically, the equilibrium of a hinged rigid leaflet with an attached rotational spring, immersed in a stationary incompressible fluid within a rigid channel. Through a careful investigation of the properties of the domain functional describing the angular momentum exerted by the fluid on the leaflet (which depends on both the leaflet angular position and its thickness), we identify sufficient conditions on the spring stiffness function for the existence (and uniqueness) of equilibrium positions. This study resorts to techniques from shape differential calculus. We propose a numerical technique that exploits the mesh flexibility of the Virtual Element Method (VEM). A (polygonal) computational mesh is generated by cutting a fixed background grid with the leaflet geometry, and the problem is then solved with stable VEM Stokes elements of degrees 1 and 2 combined with a bisection algorithm. We prove quasi-optimal error estimates and present a large array of numerical experiments to document the accuracy and robustness with respect to degenerate geometry of the proposed methodology.

249. SUPG-stabilized virtual elements for diffusion-convection problems: A robustness analysis

Abstract

The objective of this contribution is to develop a convergence analysis for SUPG-stabilized Virtual Element Methods in diffusion-convection problems that is robust also in the convection dominated regime. For the original method introduced in [Benedetto et al., CMAME 2016] we are able to show an "almost uniform"error bound (in the sense that the unique term that depends in an unfavourable way on the parameters is damped by a higher order mesh-size multiplicative factor). We also introduce a novel discretization of the convection term that allows us to develop error estimates that are fully robust in the convection dominated cases. We finally present some numerical result.
