Abstract: Data collected with the OPAL detector during 1990–1994 are used to measure the time dependence of$B_d^0 \leftrightarrow \bar B_d^0 $ mixing. A sample of 348 D*± candidates with a lepton in the opposite hemisphere are reconstructed, of which 167±25 are expected to be from B d 0 decays. The B d 0 oscillation frequency is measured to be $$\Delta m_d = 0.567 \pm 0.089(stat)_{ - 0.023}^{ + 0.029} (syst) ps^{ - 1} .$$ . A previously published analysis ofΔm d using D*± and lepton candidates in the same hemisphere and jet charge is also updated with a larger data sample. From 1200 D*±l∓ candidates, of which 778±84 are expected to be from B d 0 decays, we find a value of: $$\Delta m_d = 0.539 \pm 0.060(stat) \pm 0.024(syst) ps^{ - 1} .$$ . The combined result of these two analyses is $$\Delta m_d = 0.548 \pm 0.050(stat)_{ - 0.019}^{ + 0.023} (syst) ps^{ - 1} .$$ .

Abstract: Cross-sections and angular distributions for the production of events with single and multiple photons are measured from data recorded with the OPAL detector at the recently upgraded LEP collider. The measured cross-sections are generally consistent with Standard Model expectations for the e + e − → ν v γ(γ) and e+e− → γγ(γ) processes. Six events with an acoplanar photon pair and large missing mass are found. The observed number of events is larger than expected from e + e − → ν ν γγ ; however, the missing mass distribution is compatible with the Z0 resonance. Deviations from QED are constrained by the data on e+e− → γγ(γ). Lower limits are set at 95% confidence level on the QED cut-off parameters Λ+ and Λ− of 152 GeV and 142 GeV, respectively, and also on the mass of an excited electron of 147 GeV.

Abstract: Production of events with multihadronic and leptonic final states has been measured in e + e − collisions at centre-of-mass energies significantly above the Z 0 mass, using the OPAL detector at LEP. A substantial production rate of radiative Z 0 γ events was observed, as expected, together with events with less energetic initial-state photons. The cross-sections and leptonic forward-backward asymmetries were measured and compared with Standard Model expectations. In a model-independent fit to the Z 0 lineshape, the hadronic cross-section and lepton asymmetries presented here provide constraints on the size of the γZ 0 -interference term which are complementary to those afforded by LEP data accumulated at the Z 0 resonance.

Copyright @ 1996 Elsevier B.V Quantum mechanics predicts an exponential distribution for the decay time of massive particles. However, deviations are expected for decay times shorter than about 10−13 s in models conjecturing the existence of hidden variables. Following a recent proposal, the decay length distribution of 5843 τ leptons decaying into 3 charged particles was analyzed in search of such a deviation. The deviation from an exponential distribution with respect to the number of decays present within the exponential form, expressed as the relative weight of an excess at zero decay length, was measured to be 1.1%±1.4%±3.5%. This result is consistent with zero deviation and leads to an upper limit of 8.5% and a lower limit of −6.3% at the 95% confidence level.

Abstract: The string effect in QCD is investigated using data from the OPAL detector at LEP. By comparing the charged particle flow in three-jet multihadronic events with that in events with two jets and a hard isolated photon, the sensitivity to particular models is reduced. A comparison with various Monte Carlo models is presented. The difference in particle flows in the interquark region is found to be well reproduced by a leading order calculation of soft gluon emission, in the spirit of the Local Parton Hadron Duality hypothesis.

Abstract: Three jet events are selected from hadronic Z0 decays with a symmetry such that the two lower energy jets are produced with the same energy and in the same jet environment. In some of the events, a displaced secondary vertex is reconstructed in one of the two lower energy jets, which permits the other lower energy jet to be identified as a gluon jet, with an estimated purity of about 93%. Comparing these gluon jets to the inclusive sample of lower energy jets from the symmetric data set yields direct, model independent measurements of quark and gluon jet properties, which have essentially no bias except from the jet definition. Results are reported using both thek⊥ and cone jet definitions. For thek⊥ algorithm, we find $$\frac{{\left\langle {n_{k_ \bot }^{ch.} } \right\rangle gluon}}{{\left\langle {n_{k_ \bot }^{ch.} } \right\rangle quark}} = 1.25 \pm 0.02(stat.) \pm 0.03(syst.)$$ for the ratio of the mean charged particle multiplicity of gluon to quark jets, while for the cone algorithm, we find $$\frac{{\left\langle {n_{cone}^{ch.} } \right\rangle gluon}}{{\left\langle {n_{cone}^{ch.} } \right\rangle quark}} = 1.10 \pm 0.02(stat.) \pm 0.02(syst.)$$ using a cone size of 30°. We also report measurements of the angular distributions of particle energy and multiplicity around the jet directions, and of the fragmentation functions of the jets. Gluon jets are found to be substantially broader and to have a markedly softer fragmentation function than quark jets, in agreement with our earlier observations.

Abstract: We have searched for lepton flavour violating Z0→eμ, Z0→eτ and Z0→μτ decays in a sample of 4.0×106 visible Z0 decays collected with the OPAL detector at LEP during 1991 to 1994. No candidates are found for Z0→eμ. The samples of selected Z0→eτ and Z0→μτ candidates are consistent with the expected background. Abstract: This letter presents an updated measurement of the lifetime of the B s 0 meson using 3.6 million hadronic Z 0 decays recorded by the OPAL detector at LEP from 1990 to 1994. A sample of B s 0 decays is obtained using D s − l + combinations, where the D s − is reconstructed in either the φπ − or K ∗0 K − decay mode. From 79 ± 13 D x l combinations attributed to B s 0 decays in this data sample, we measure τ (B s 0 ) = 1.54 −0.21 +0.25 ± 0.06 ps, where the errors are statistical and systematic, respectively.

Abstract: Using the OPAL data accumulated in 1991–1993 amounting to 74 pb−1 of integrated luminosity, corresponding to 1.64×106 selected multi-hadronic events, a search has been performed for charged particles with unusual mass or unusual charge. The mass was determined from a combination of momentum and ionization energy loss measurements. No isolation criteria were applied to the tracks examined, so that both isolated particles and particles produced in jets were valid candidates. For particles with chargeQ/e=−1, one candidate with a mass of approximately 4.2 GeV/c2 was found, which is compatible with the background rate expected according to a Monte Carlo simulation. The implications of this search for the mass limits of a conjectured stable or quasi-stable charged gluino composite $$(\tilde gq\bar q')^ \pm $$ are discussed. Limits are also presented for the production of fractionally-charged particles withQ/e=±2/3 and ±4/3 as well as for particles withQ/e=±2.

Abstract: PICASSO at SNOLAB searches primarily for spin-dependent WIMP interactions on 19F using the superheated droplet technique. This technique is based on the bubble chamber principle, where phase transitions in superheated liquid droplets can be triggered by WIMP induced nuclear recoils. The physics of the detection process allows a highly efficient suppression of backgrounds from cosmic muons, γ- and β-rays. We will discuss qualitatively recent progress in PICASSO and its sensitivity reach for spin-dependent and spin-independent WIMP searches.

Abstract: Scintillating fibers are of growing interest in high energy physics for applications in calorimetry and in tracking detectors At present plastic scintillating fibers are mainly used in these applications because of their high light yield and their fast decay rates; however, in thin fibers, required for high spatial resolution, these suffer from low attenuation lengths. Moreover, cross-talk is still a severe problem. As alternatives we will discuss the following two concepts: (1) using Ce- and Tb-doped multicomponent glasses as active core material of glass fibers and (2) using liquid scintillator filled glass capillary arrays. The optical properties of the rare earth doped glasses are described and the scintillation efficiency of the fibers and fiber bundles utilizing these glasses as core material are presented. Broader applications appear to the possible with liquid scintillator filled capillary arrays. Suitable liquid scintillators with high refractive index solvents and locally emitting solutes with high yields, short decay times and large Stokes-shifts are available. Arrays can be produced with and without extra mural absorber in various sizes and shapes. Theoretical estimates show that reflection losses at the liquid/glass interface do not effect the overall transmission up to length/diameter ratios of 105. In addition recent results have shown that the system resists radiation doses in the 100 kGy range. Abstract: Results are presented on tests in a 5 GeV/c hadron beam of a high-resolution tracking detector constructed from 20 μm diameter glass capillaries filled with liquid scintillator. Details are given of the techniques used to eliminate noise in the readout system and to reduce cross-talk between capillaries. A spatial resolution of 15 μm is obtained.

Abstract: We are reporting an improved determination of the electroweak mixing angle sin2Θw from the ratio of νμe to ν μ e scattering cross sections. The CHARM II detector was exposed to neutrino and antineutrino wide band beams at the 450 GeV CERN SPS. Including new data collected in 1989 we have obtained 1316 ± 56 νμe and 1453 ± 62 ν μ e events. From the ratio of the visible cross sections we determined sin2Θ0=0.239 ± 0.009(stat) ± 0.007(syst) without radiative corrections and g V e g A e =0.047 ± 0.046 . Combining this last result with recent results on gAe at LEP we obtain gVe= −0.023 ± 0.023.

Abstract: Coherent arrays of glass capillaries filled with liquid scintillator offer interesting possibilities in high resolution particle tracking. We describe the preparation and filling of capillary targets with 20 and 120 μm diameter lightguides, as well as the performance of capillary targets in a 5 GeV test beam exposure. Considerations are given concerning choice and optimization of solvents with high refractive index and fluorescence dyes. Furthermore results of systematic studies of liquid scintillators in beam tests are reported.

Abstract: The CHARM II Collaboration is building a massive, fine-grained and low-density detector for the study of neutrino-electron scattering. Its target calorimeter consists of 441 detector planes with 155 232 plastic streamer tubes with digital readout of the wires and analog readout of external pickup strips. At the time of this report, about 25% of the calorimeter planes were equipped with electronics. Results on the performance of these tubes are presented as obtained with cosmic-rays and with electron and pion beams. We have also investigated the use of water vapour as an additive to the gas to suppress coating of the anode wires. The use of water would be of particular importance when using the tubes in a high-rate environment.

Abstract: The 2S 1/2-2P 1/2 Lamb-shift in hydrogenlike Sulfur was measured with a field quench technique. A high velocity beam of S15+-ions (v/c=0.086) prepared in the metastable 2S 1/2 state crosses a homogeneous magnetic field of about 1.8 Tesla. The strong electric field of 4·107 V/m in the rest frame of the ions mixes the longlived 2S 1/2-state (τ=7.18 nsec) with the short lived 2P 1/2-state (τ=2.4·10−5 ns). From the measured lifetime of the thus quenched 2S 1/2-state a Lamb-shift value of 25.14±0.24 THz is derived and compared with theoretical predictions.

Abstract: The positron spectrum from the reaction ν e + p → e + +n was measured at a distance of 64.7 m from the core of the Gosg en power reactor. These new data, combined with those of previous measurements performed under otherwise identical conditions at 37.9 m and 45.9 m, were analyzed in terms of two-neutrino oscillations of the type ν e ↔ x . No evidence for neutrino-oscillations was found. In particular, the oscillation parameter region favored by an experiment at the Bugey reactor is not supported by the data presented here.

Abstract: The positron spectrum from the reaction ν e + p → e + + n has been measured at L=37.9 from the core of the Gosgen power reactor to search for neutrino oscillations of the type ν e ↔ x in the low mass parameter range. The results are consistent with the no neutrino oscillation hypothesis. Upper limits of δm 2 ⪕ 0.016 eV 2 (90% c.l..) for full mixing, and sin 2 2θ⪕0.17 (90% c.l.) in the limit of large mass parameters were determined. For the ratio of the integrated experimental yield to that predicted for the case of no oscillations a value of 1.05 ± 0.02 (statistical) ± 0.05 (systematic; 68% c.l.) was obtained.

Abstract: Thin-film superconducting tunnel junctions (Sn/SnOx/Sn) operated at a temperature of 0.3 K were irradiated by a 55Fe X-ray source. Pulses due to photo-absorption in the devices were observed and the Mn Kα, Kβ lines at 5.89 keV and 6.49 keV, respectively, could clearly be resolved by pulse-height analysis. An energy resolution of ΔE(FWHM) = 250 eV was obtained in the first tests reported here. Improvements may be possible by straightforward techniques.

Abstract: The positron spectrum from the reaction ν e + p → e + + n has been measured at L = 45.9 m from the core of the Gosgen power reactor. The data, combined with those of our previous measurement at 37.9 m, are analysed in terms of two-neutrino oscillations of the type ν e ↔ x . This analysis is essentially independent of external data on the spectral distribution of reactor neutrinos. No evidence for neutrino oscillations was found. A comprehensive analysis including data on the spectral distribution yields upper limits for the oscillation parameters of Δm 2 ⩽ 0.016 eV 2 (90% CL for full mixing, and sin 2 2 θ ⩽ 0.16 (90% CL) for large Δm 2 .

Abstract: The inclusive branching ratio for the process b -> tau nu X has been measured using hadronic Z decays collected by the OPAL experiment at LEP in the years 1992-2000. The result is: BR(b -> tau nu X) = (2.78 +/- 0.18 +/- 0.51)% This measurement is consistent with the Standard Model expectation and puts a constraint of tan(beta) / M(H+/-) < 0.53 GeV-1 at the 95% confidence level on Type II Two Higgs Doublet Models.

Abstract: A fast and effective algorithm for electromagnetic and hadronic shower separation has been developed for the digital sampling calorimeter of the CHARM II experiment. It is based on a generalization of the minimal spanning tree concept and can be easily applied to other existing calorimeters. In this particular application, which requires the highest efficiency for retaining electromagnetic showers, one gets, for 99% efficiency, a rejection factor of the order of 100 for hadronic showers.

Abstract: We report on experimental results obtained with the neutrino target calorimeter of the CHARM II detector. The experiment is being performed at CERN and its aim is to measure sin2θw, the electroweak mixing parameter, via the study of neutrino-electron scattering. The detector, installed on the SPS neutrino wide-band beam line, consists of a glass calorimeter instrumented with plastic streamer tubes and scintillation counters, and of a muon spectrometer. The performance of the calorimeter has been explored during a test run with electron and pion beams. Results concerning the detector response, the energy and angular resolution, and the e π separation are presented here.

Abstract: We are reporting on a new determination of sin2ϑw from the ratio of v μ e to v e scattering cross sections. A new detector designed for this purpose was exposed tothe Wide Band Neutrino Beamof the 450 GeV (CERN SPS. An analysis of data taken in 1987 and 1988 is presented based on 762 vμe and 1017 v e events. From the ratio of σ( v μ e ) to σ( v μ e ) we determined sin2ϑw=0.233±0.012 (stat) ± 0.008 (syst) without radiative correction. With radiative correction for mt=mH=100 GeV we find sin2ϑw=0.232±0.012(stat)±0.008(syst).

Abstract: The CHARM II Collaboration has built a massive, fine-grained calorimeter for the study of the elastic scattering {A figure is presented} short description of the detector will be followed by the presentation of some results obtained by exposing 40 of the 441 planes of the calorimeter to a beam of electrons and pions. Comments will be given about the conditioning procedure followed for the 154560 limited streamer tubes which compose the active part of the calorimeter.

Abstract: Delayed emission of prompt Ly-α and Ly-β radiation has been used to investigate the initial population of excited states of fast H-like oxygen and sulfur ions emergingfrom foil targets. We can distinguish between low- and high-angular momentum states and identify ions with orbital dimensions of ≈1000 a 0 . It is shown that electron pick-up known from single ion-atom collisions is not sufficient to explain foil-induced excitation of high-angular momentum states and additional mechanisms must be considered. Capture due to last layer interaction is commented on.

Abstract: Searches for unstable neutral and charged heavy leptons, N and L+-, and for excited states of neutral and charged leptons, nu*, e*, mu*, and tau*, have been performed in e+e- collisions using data collected by the OPAL detector at LEP. The data analysed correspond to an integrated luminosity of about 58pb-1 at a centre-of-mass energy of 183GeV, and about 10pb-1 each at 161GeV and 172GeV. No evidence for new particles was found. Lower limits on the masses of unstable heavy and excited leptons are derived. From the analysis of charged-current, neutral-current, and photonic decays of singly produced excited leptons, upper limits are determined for the ratio of the coupling to the compositeness scale, f/Lambda, for masses up to the kinematic limit. For excited leptons, the limits are established independently of the relative values of the coupling constants f and f'. Abstract: Since the resolution of a detector is limited by the statistics of the number of produced free charge carriers, a detector with a small minimal ionization energy per free charge is most favorable. The thousand times smaller gap of a superconductor (order of meV) compared to a semiconductor detector (Δeff(Si) = 2.94 eV, Δeff(Ge) = 3.6 eV)1 offers the possibility for particle detectors with an improved energy resolution2, 3, 4.

Abstract: A search for neutrino oscillations has been conducted at the 2800-MW (thermal) nuclear power reactor in Gösgen (Switzerland), providing 5×10^20 electron antineutrinos per second. The energy spectrum of the antineutrinos was measured at three distances, 37.9, 45.9, and 64.7 m, from the reactor core. The detection of the neutrinos is based on the reaction ν¯e+p→e++n. Roughly 10^4 antineutrinos were registered at each of the three measuring positions. The measured spectra are analyzed in terms of a two-neutrino oscillation model and the results are represented as exclusion plots for the oscillation parameters Δm^2 and sin^2(2theta). Two analyses are performed: Analysis A relies exclusively on the data measured at the three different distances; analysis B combines the measured data with additional information, in particular with the reactor antineutrino spectrum as derived from independent β-spectroscopic measurements. Both analyses show that the data are consistent with the absence of neutrino oscillations, and rule out large regions of parameters (Δm2,theta). The resulting limits on the oscillation parameters are Δm^25 eV^2.

Abstract: Theoretical prejudices derived from solar-v matter oscillations and assumptions of neutrino mass hierarchies suggest, that v − oscillations are observable in laboratory with mass parameters of Δm2 = 10−3- 104eV2 . In particular v μ→v τ appearance searches at accelerators and ve→ vx disappearance experiments at reactors seem strongly motivated.

Abstract: The question whether the neutrino possesses a finite rest mass remains one of the most important and challenging issues in todays physics. Unfortunately, there is little guidance from theory. Whereas in the minimal version of Grand Unified Theories — the SU(5) model — there is no room for neutrino mass generating processes, extended models beyond SU(5) easily allow neutrino masses in the range 10-6 eV to 10 eV. A finite neutrino mass together with violation of lepton number conservation offers the possibility of neutrino oscillations [1]. The underlying assumption for the existence of v — oscillations is, that the neutrino v l being created and detected by weak interaction processes are coherent superpositions of neutrino states v i with definite mass mi, in analogy to the KM — mixing of hadronic charged currents: $$ {v_{\ell }} = \sum {{U_{{\ell, {i^v}i}}}\ell = e,\mu, \tau \ldots i = 1,2,3 \ldots } $$ (1) where U l,i are the mixing amplitudes. In the simplest picture, where only two neutrino species are involved, neutrino oscillations are characterized by two parameters: the mixing angle Θ, denoting the degree of admixture of the neutrino mass eigenstates to the weak eigenstates and the mass parameter Δm2 = |m1 2 – m2 2| defined by the difference of the squared corresponding mass eigenvalues.

Abstract: Cross-sections for hadronic and leptonic two-fermion events, and leptonic forward-backward asymmetries, have been measured in e+e− collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 161 GeV, using the OPAL detector at LEP. Results are presented both including and excluding the dominant production of radiative γZ0 events. We have measured Rb, the ratio of the number of b b to all multihadronic events at 161 GeV, and compared it to the result obtained at 130–136 GeV. All results agree well with the Standard Model expectations. In a model-independent fit to the Z0 lineshape, the data presented here give an improved precision on the γZ0-interference term. The data have also been used to obtain new limits on extensions of the Standard Model described by effective four-fermion contact interactions.

Abstract: The leptonic branching ratios of the tau lepton have been determined from data collected by the OPAL detector in 1991 and 1992. From a sample of 27196 e+e−→τ+τ− candidates we find 7322$\tau \to e\nu \bar \nu$ and 7941$\tau \to \mu \nu \bar \nu$ candidates. Using efficiency and background estimates determined from a study of Monte Carlo events and control samples of data, the branching ratios$B(\tau \to e\nu \bar \nu )$=(18.14±0.20±0.28)% and$B(\tau \to \mu \nu \bar \nu )$=(17.48±0.18±0.23)% have been obtained. These new results have been combined with the published results for the 1990 OPAL data to yield the following branching ratios for data taken between 1990 and 1992: $$\begin{gathered} B(\tau \to e\nu \bar \nu ) = (18.04 \pm 0.33)\% , \hfill \\ B(\tau \to \mu \nu \bar \nu ) = (17.36 \pm 0.27)\% . \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$ These leptonic branching ratios are used with other properties of the muon and tau-lepton to test the universality of charged current leptonic couplings in these decays. The ratio$R_\tau = B(\tau \to hadrons + \nu _\tau )/B(\tau \to e\bar \nu _e \nu _\tau )$ is calculated using our measured values of the leptonic branching fractions of the tau and tau lifetime from which a value of αs(Q2=Mτ2) is extracted. The value of αs(Q2=MZ2) is obtained byQ2 evolution and agrees with the value from the Z0 line shape analysis.

Abstract: We have studied hadronic events produced at LEP at centre-of-mass energies of 130 and 136 GeV. Distributions of event shape observables, jet rates, momentum spectra and multiplicities are presented and compared to the predictions of several Monte Carlo models and analytic QCD calculations. From fits of event shape and jet rate distributions to${\mathcal{O}}(\alpha _s^2 ) + NLLA$ QCD calculations, we determineαs(133 GeV)=0.110±0.005(stat.)±0.009(syst.). We measure the mean charged particle multiplicity 〈nch〉=23.40±0.45(stat.) ±0.47(syst.) and the position ζ0 of the peak in the ζp = ln(1/xp) distribution ζ0=3.94±0.05(stat.)±0.11(syst.). These results are compared to lower energy data and to analytic QCD or Monte Carlo predictions for their energy evolution.

Abstract: A search is described for the neutral Higgs bosons h^0 and A^0 predicted by models with two scalar field doublets and, in particular, the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). The search in the Z^0 h^0 and h^0 A^0 production channels is based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 25 pb^{-1} from e^+e^- collisions at centre-of-mass energies between 130 and 172GeV collected with the OPAL detector at LEP. The observation of a number of candidates consistent with Standard Model background expectations is used in combination with earlier results from data collected at the Z^0 resonance to set limits on m_h and m_A in general models with two scalar field doublets and in the MSSM. For example, in the MSSM, for tan(beta) > 1, minimal and maximal scalar top quark mixing and soft SUSY-breaking masses of 1 TeV, the 95% confidence level limits m_h > 59.0 GeV and m_A > 59.5 GeV are obtained. For the first time, the MSSM parameter space is explored in a detailed scan. Abstract: The scalar top quark can be the lightest charged supersymmetric particle and it can be lighter than the top quark itself in supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model. A search for a scalar top quark has been performed using a total data sample of 15.2 pb−1 at centre-of-mass energies of √s = 130, 136, and 161 GeV collected with the OPAL detector at LEP. No evidence was found above the background level expected from the Standard Model. The 95% C.L. lower limit on the scalar top quark mass is 58.7 GeV, if the mixing angle between the supersymmetric partners of the left- and right-handed states of the top quark is smaller than π 4 . If the mixing angle is zero, the limit is 65.4 GeV. These limits were obtained on the condition that the scalar top quark decays into a charm quark and the lightest neutralino, and that the mass difference between the scalar top quark and the lightest neutralino is larger than 10 GeV. Assuming a relatively light scalar neutrino, we also studied the complementary decay mode of the scalar top quark in which it decays into a bottom quark, a charged lepton, and a scalar neutrino. A mass limit on the light scalar bottom quark was also set in this study.

Abstract: The production of neutral kaons in e+e− annihilation at centre-of-mass energies in the region of the Z0 mass and their Bose-Einstein correlations are investigated with the OPAL detector at LEP. A total of about 1.26×106 Z0 hadronic decay events are used in the analysis. The production rate of K0 mesons is found to be 1.99±0.01±0.04 per hadronic event, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. Both the rate and the differential cross section for K0 production are compared to the predictions of Monte Carlo generators. This comparison indicates that the fragmentation is too soft in bothJetset andHerwig. Bose-Einstein correlations in Ks0Ks0 pairs are measured through the quantityQ, the four momentum difference of the pair. A threshold enhancement is observed in Ks0Ks0 pairs originating from a mixed sample of$K^0 \bar K^0$ and K0K0 ($\bar K^0 \bar K^0$) pairs. For the strength of the effect and for the radius of the emitting source we find values of λ=1.14±0.23±0.32 andR0=(0.76±0.10±0.11) fm respectively. The first error is statistical and the second systematic.

Abstract: A measurement of theτ lepton polarization and its forward-backward asymmetry at the Z0 resonance using the OPAL detector is described. The measurement is based on analyses of τ→ρντ, ττπ(K)ντ,$\tau \to e\bar \nu _e \nu _\tau $,$\tau \to \mu \bar \nu _\mu \nu _\tau $ andτ→a1ντ decays from a sample of 89075 e+e−→τ+τ− candidates corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 117 pb−1. Assuming that theτ lepton decays according to V-A theory, we measure the averageτ polarization at √s=MZ to be 〈P〉=(−13.0±0.9±0.9)% and theτ polarization forward-backward asymmetry to be ApolFB=(−9.4±1.0±0.4)%, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. These results are consistent with the hypothesis of lepton universality and, when combined, can be expressed as a measurement of sin2θefflept=0.2334±0.0012 within the context of the Standard Model.

Abstract: A new measurement of the τ lifetime is presented. It uses data collected with the Opal detector during 1994, which almost doubles the size of the Opal τ sample. Two statistically independent techniques are used: an impact parameter analysis of one-prong decay tracks and a fit to the decay length distribution of three-prong decays. The lifetime obtained from the 1994 data by combining the results of these methods is τ τ = 289.7 ± 2.5 (stat)± 1.5 (sys) fs. When combined with the previous Opal τ lifetime measurement the improved τ lifetime is τ τ = 289.2 ± 1.7 (stat.) ± 1.2 (sys.) fs.

Abstract: The results of a study of charm meson production in semileptonic B hadron decays are presented. Based on a sample of 1.72 million hadronic Z0 decays the following product branching ratios (averaged over electrons and muons) are obtained: $$\begin{gathered} B(b \to D^ + \ell X) \cdot B(D^ + \to K^ - \pi ^ + \pi ^ + ) \hfill \\ = (1.82 \pm 0.20 \pm 0.12) \times 10^{ - 3} , \hfill \\ B(b \to D^0 \ell X) \cdot B(D^0 \to K^ - \pi ^ + ) \hfill \\ = (2.52 \pm 0.14 \pm 0.17) \times 10^{ - 3} \hfill \\ B(b \to D^* \ell X) \cdot B(D^{* + } \to D^0 \pi ^ + ) \cdot B(D^0 \to K^ - \pi ^ + ) \hfill \\ = (7.53 \pm 0.47 \pm 0.56) \times 10^{ - 4} \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$ where the first error is statistical and the second systematic.
