In developed countries, cardiovascular disease is currently the leading cause of death for women aged over 55 years. Coronary heart disease (CHD) mortality is higher in women than in men, which is partly explained by CHD diagnostic problems due to different, gender-specific clinical manifestations of the disease.

Planets that are embedded in the changing magnetic fields of their host stars can experience significant induction heating in their interiors caused by the planet’s orbital motion. For induction heating to be substantial, the planetary orbit has to be inclined with respect to the stellar rotation and dipole axes. Using WX UMa, for which the rotation and magnetic axes are aligned, as an example, we show that for close-in planets on inclined orbits, induction heating can be stronger than the tidal heating occurring inside Jupiter’s satellite Io; namely, it can generate a surface heat flux exceeding 2 W m−2. An internal heating source of such magnitude can lead to extreme volcanic activity on the planet’s surface, possibly also to internal local magma oceans, and to the formation of a plasma torus around the star aligned with the planetary orbit. A strongly volcanically active planet would eject into space mostly SO2, which would then dissociate into oxygen and sulphur atoms. Young planets would also eject CO2. Oxygen would therefore be the major component of the torus. If the O i column density of the torus exceeds ≈1012 cm−2, the torus could be revealed by detecting absorption signatures at the position of the strong far-ultraviolet O i triplet at about 1304 Å. We estimate that this condition is satisfied if the O i atoms in the torus escape the system at a velocity smaller than 1–10 km s−1. These estimates are valid also for a tidally heated planet. Hemostatic system - this is an important mechanism for maintaining hemostasis. At the same time, particularly hemostatic system in healthy active lactating cows with mastitis beginning are not completely clarified. The goal - to find out the level of functional activity of hemostasis in cows in mid-lactation in norm and in conditions of incipient mastitis. Investigations were carried out on 61 cow calving 3-4 contained in the conditions of the Samara region. Of these, the control group consisted of 24 healthy cows and 37 cows with signs of incipient mastitis amounted experimental group. The paper applied hematologic and statistical methods. Based on literature data, it is clear that breastfeeding affects the intensity of the hemostatic process. The paper found that in mid-lactation cows healthy there is a weakening of activating effects in hemostasis and increased fibrinolysis mechanisms. This leads to the maintenance of their optimum rheological properties of blood, ensuring delivery of the required amount of nutrients and oxygen to all the organs and tissues, promoting the rise of milk production. In the case of inflammation of the mammary gland in cows come changes in the hemostatic system activities that form the propensity to thrombosis. Developing their hemostatic activation is associated with simultaneous strengthening of its plasma and platelet units. It becomes clear that in lactating cows in the early development of the terms of mastitis occurs strengthen hemostatic mechanisms.

The article describes the rare clinical case of transthyretine amyloidosis in young patient, manifested by heart rhythm disturbances and biventricular heart failure.

Clinical cases of three patients with neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction, complicated by chronic urinary tract infection are presented in the article. All patients underwent clean intermittent catheterization and, in order to prevent symptomatic lower urinary tract infections, received bacteriophage therapy with a clinically proven positive effect. During 3 months follow-up, there were no episodes of urinary tract infection. A change in the concentration of uropathogens and restoration of sensitivity to a number of antimicrobial drugs were observed. Although phage therapy in urology requires further clinical research, it provides an additional strategy to treat urinary tract infections considering an increase in antibiotic resistance.

Purpose of research was to study dynamics prevalence of diseases among children' population in the separate rural tacsons of Dnepropetrovsk region; to carry out correlation analysis between some indicators of drinking water quality and prevalence of diseases. Research indicators of prevalence of diseases was carried out in the 6 types of tacsons of Dnipropetrovsk region (Ukraine) during 2008 - 2013 years (totally 522720 indicators). It was proved that (I, II, III, XI, XIII, XIV) classes of diseases takes the first place by the prevalence of diseases in the majority of rural tacsons. Correlation between higher salt content of the potable water taking from decentralized sources and content of some heavy metals (Zn, Cu, Mn) and some substances (pH, F, Al, nitrogen ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, oxidability) and the prevalence of diseases among children: tumors (r=0.87); diseases of blood and hematopoetic organs (r=0.74-0.95); anemia (r=0.79-0.87); diseases of genitourinary system (r=0.79-0.82); congenital anomalies (r=0.87), including circulatory system (r=0.74-0.95) was revealed in the separate tacsons of Dnepropetrovsk region (p<0.001).

Biological mineralization of tissues in living organisms relies on proteins that preferentially nucleate minerals and control their growth. This process is often referred to as "templating," but this term has become generic, denoting various proposed mineral-organic interactions including both chemical and structural affinities. Here, we present an approach using self-assembled networks of elastin and fibronectin fibers, similar to the extracellular matrix. When induced onto negatively charged sulfonated polystyrene surfaces, these proteins form fiber networks of approximately 10-mum spacing, leaving open regions of disorganized protein between them. We introduce an atomic force microscopy-based technique to measure the elastic modulus of both structured and disorganized protein before and during calcium carbonate mineralization. Mineral-induced thickening and stiffening of the protein fibers during early stages of mineralization is clearly demonstrated, well before discrete mineral crystals are large enough to image by atomic force microscopy. Calcium carbonate stiffens the protein fibers selectively without affecting the regions between them, emphasizing interactions between the mineral and the organized protein fibers. Late-stage observations by optical microscopy and secondary ion mass spectroscopy reveal that Ca is concentrated along the protein fibers and that crystals form preferentially on the fiber crossings. We demonstrate that organized versus unstructured proteins can be assembled mere nanometers apart and probed in identical environments, where mineralization is proved to require the structural organization imposed by fibrillogenesis of the extracellular matrix.

We explored and compared several synthetic methods of grafting silica with strong (alkyltriphenylphosphonium, tetralkylammonium, propylpyridinium and dialkylimidazolium) and weak (gamma-aminopropyl, gamma-(N-imidazolyl)propyl) anion-exchanging groups starting with commercially available chloroalkyl- and gamma-aminopropylsilanes. Structure of the intermediate and final materials was investigated by elemental analysis, titration, 13C, 29Si, 31P MAS NMR, DRIFT, and TPD MS. The derivatives of alkyltriphenylphosphonium, propylpyridinium and dialkylimidazolium cation can be prepared with satisfactory quaternisation yields (ca. 30-100%) via the nucleophilic substitution of gamma-chloropropyl groups either in the silane or in chloropropylsilica, resulting in bonded phases with moderate densities: 0.2-1.0 group nm(-2) (onium salts) and 0.2-1.5 group nm(-2) (amines). Parallel one-pot end-capping/hydrophobization can be done if a mixture of target silane with end-capping reagent or gamma-chloropropylsilane is used. The grafted layer is highly stable at the level of Si-C bonds and decomposes at ca. 400 degrees C, while the onium functions begin to decompose at ca. 250 degrees C, lowering the thermal stability of materials. Thus, anion-exchanging silicas can be envisaged for the use as catalyst supports at moderate temperatures.

[reaction: see text] Spontaneous self-associations of various tricyclic phenalenyl radicals lead reversibly to either pi- or sigma-dimers, depending on alkyl-substitution patterns at the alpha- and beta-positions. Thus, the sterically encumbered all-beta-substituted tri-tert-butylphenalenyl radical (2*) affords only the long-bonded pi-dimer in dichloromethane solutions, under conditions in which the parent phenalenyl radical (1*) leads to only the sigma-dimer. Further encumbrances of 1* with a pair of alpha, beta- or beta, beta- tert-butyl substituents and additional methyl and ethyl groups (as in sterically hindered phenalenyl radicals 3* - 6*) do not inhibit sigma-dimerization. ESR spectroscopy is successfully employed to monitor the formation of both diamagnetic (2-electron) dimers; and UV-vis spectroscopy specifically identifies the pi-dimer by its intense near-IR band. The different temperature-dependent spectral (ESR and UV-vis) behaviors of these phenalenyl radicals allow the quantitative evaluation of the bond enthalpy of 12 +/- 2 kcal mol(-1) for sigma-dimers, in which the unusually low value has been theoretically accounted for by the large loss of phenalenyl (aromatic) pi-resonance energy attendant upon such bond formation.

Materials with hysteretic non-linearity have the property of memorizing specific previous extrema in the stress/strain loading history. Because of this complexity, the analytical theory describing the non-linear evolution of acoustic waves in such materials is currently restricted to simplex wave propagation processes with a single minimum and a single maximum over a wave period. In the present paper a numerical model is presented which is valid for an arbitrary strain wave profile, and the results for the frequency-mixing process in acoustic waves composed initially of two harmonic frequency components are analyzed. The model simulations demonstrate that an initially complex wave transforms into a simplex wave during propagation. In addition, we have studied the mutual influence of the initial frequency components, and we have found regimes of induced absorption and induced transparency.

Rectification (demodulation) of high-frequency shear acoustic bursts is applied to probe the distribution of contact forces in 3D granular media. Symmetry principles allow for rectification of the shear waves only with their conversion into longitudinal mode. The rectification is due to nonlinear dynamic dilatancy, which is found to follow a quadratic or Hertzian power law in the shear wave amplitude. Evidence is given that a significant portion of weak contact forces is localized below 10(-2) of the mean force-a range previously inaccessible by experiment. Strong anisotropy of nonlinearity for shear waves with different polarization is observed.

Crystal structures for both native and recombinant forms of yeast fumarase from Saccharomyces cerevisiae have been completed to moderate resolution by two separate laboratories. The recombinant form was obtained by the construction of an expression plasmid for Escherichia coli. Despite a high level of amino acid sequence similarity, purification of the eukaryotic enzyme from the wild-type prokaryotic enzyme was feasible. The crystal structure of the native form, NY-fumarase, encompasses residues R22 through M484, while the recombinant form, RY-fumarase, consists of residues S27 through L485. Both crystal structures lack the N-terminal translocation segment. Each subunit of the homo-tetrameric protein has three domains. The active site is formed by segments from each of three polypeptide chains. The results of these studies on the eukaryotic proteins are unique, since the recombinant form was done in the absence of dicarboxylic acid and has an unoccupied active site. As a comparison, native fumarase was crystallized in the presence of the competitive inhibitor, meso-tartrate. Meso-tartrate occupies a position close to that of the bound citrate molecule found in the active site of the E. coli enzyme. This inhibitor participates in hydrogen bonding to an active-site water molecule. The independent determination of the two structures provides further evidence that an active-site water molecule may play an active role in the fumarase-catalyzed reaction., (Copyright 1998 Academic Press.)

The hemophilia A mutation database lists more than 160 missense mutations: each represents a molecular defect in the FVIII molecule, resulting in the X-linked bleeding disorder hemophilia A with a clinical presentation varying from mild to severe. Without a three-dimensional FVIII structure it is in most cases impossible to explain biological dysfunction in terms of the underlying molecular pathology. However, recently the crystal structure of the homologous human plasma copper-binding protein ceruloplasmin (hCp) has been solved, and the A domains of FVIII share approximately 34% sequence identity with hCp. This advance has enabled the building of a molecular model of the A domains of FVIII based on the sequence identity between the two proteins. The model allows exploration of predictions regarding the general features of the FVIII molecule, such as the binding-sites for factor IXa and activated protein C; it has also allowed the mapping of more than 30 selected mutations with known phenotype from the database, and the prediction of hypothetical links to dysfunction in all but a few cases. A computer-generated molecular model such as that reported here cannot substitute for a crystal structure. However, until such a structure for FVIII becomes available, the model represents a significant advance in modeling FVIII; it should prove a useful tool for exploiting the increasing amount of information in the hemophilia A mutation database, and for selecting appropriate targets for investigation of the structure-function relationships via mutagenesis and expression in vitro.

Crystals of the prismane protein from Desulfovibrio vulgaris (Hildenborough) containing a putative [6Fe-6S] cluster have been obtained and X-ray data collected to a resolution of 1.7 A using synchrotron radiation. The unit cell is orthorhombic with a = 64.1, b = 65.1 and c = 154.1 A, space group P2(1)2(1)2(1) (No. 19). The unit cell will readily accommodate four molecules of molecular weight 60 kDa with a corresponding solvent content of approximately 48%.

More and more young people are living on the streets of Moscow and getting involved in substance abuse and crime. The authors outline the effort being made by the International Health and Temperance Association to organize a response to this rapidly growing problem.

The molecular structures of the acetate complexes of wild-type human carbonic anhydrase II (HCAII) and of E106Q mutant human carbonic anhydrase II were solved with high completeness (89-91%) to 2.1 and 1.9 A resolution, respectively. Both wild-type and mutant enzyme crystallize in space group P2(1) with cell dimensions a = 42.7, b = 41.7, c = 73.0 A and beta = 104.6 degrees. The altered active-site hydrogen-bond network caused by the mutation results in a different binding of the inhibitor in the two complexes. In the mutant, but not in the wild-type complex, a carboxylate O atom is within hydrogen-bond distance of Thr199 Ogamma1. In the wild-type enzyme ligand hydrogen bonding to this atom is normally only found for hydrogen-bond donors. The importance of this discrimination on catalysis by the enzyme is discussed briefly.
