Background: Nowadays, the assessment of psychopathy relies on semistructured interviews plus file reviews. In order to improve the predictive validity of psychopathy at the individual level, tools that are not based on the rating of signs and symptoms are in great need., Sampling and Methods: The present study was conducted in a representative sample of 204 Spanish sentenced inmates. These inmates have served at least 6 months of their sentence at the Pereiro de Aguiar (Ourense, Spain) penitentiary. Psychopathy signs and symptoms were scored through interview and file review. The Implicit Association Test (IAT) and heart rate variability (HRV) experiments were also conducted. The Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) was performed as a control measure., Results: Spectral HRV indices were able to detect psychopathic inmates at a significant level, while IAT experiments and the IGT could not discriminate them. HRV indices showed a more significant difference when assessing the affective-interpersonal dimensions of psychopathy., Conclusions: An HRV experiment is better than IAT in order to detect psychopathy in a representative sample of Spanish inmates., (© 2017 S. Objective: The objective of this study was to describe tissue procurement activity performed during 10 years (2004-2014) by trained medical students in a large university hospital., Methods: In this study, third to sixth year medical students were trained as in-hospital Tissue Coordinators (Tc) to perform tissue procurement activity on a 24/7 schedule supervised by an on-call senior Transplant Coordinator (sTC) in a large university hospital. Tc duty consisted of detection, initial evaluation of all hospital deaths, donor's family approach for tissue donation, and retrieval logistics organization, including corneal tissue retrieval after training and certification. They also assist sTC in organ procurement activity., Results: A total of 18,931 deaths were prospectively evaluated, 79% of whom (n = 14,879) presented medical contraindications for tissue donation. Of the remaining 4052 (21%) potential tissue donors (PTD), 2522 (62%) were not converted into real donors, mostly due to family refusal (66%; n = 1650) followed by detection system failure and other logistical issues (34%; n = 872). A total of 2814 corneal units, 225 skin donations, 327 muscleskeletal tissue donations, 91 blood vessels donations, and 177 heart valve donations were obtained from the remaining 1530 (38%) real donors. Tissue potentiality increased from 19% to 43% throughout the study period as a consequence of the fluctuating acceptance criteria used by tissue banks depending on tissue demand., Conclusions: The tissue donation program performed by trained students was successful in achieving a high and sustainable tissue donation rate in a large university hospital., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Inc. This work compares several fiducial points to detect the arrival of a new pulse in a photoplethysmographic signal using the built-in camera of smartphones or a photoplethysmograph. Also, an optimization process for the signal preprocessing stage has been done. Finally we characterize the error produced when we use the best cutoff frequencies and fiducial point for smartphones and photopletysmograph and compare if the error of smartphones can be reasonably be explained by variations in pulse transit time. The results have revealed that the peak of the first derivative and the minimum of the second derivative of the pulse wave have the lowest error. Moreover, for these points, high pass filtering the signal between 0.1 to 0.8 Hz and low pass around 2.7 Hz or 3.5 Hz are the best cutoff frequencies. Finally, the error in smartphones is slightly higher than in a photoplethysmograph.

The aims of this study were to examine sex differences in college students while they performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on a manikin for 20 min in (a) objective and subjective effort indicators and (b) to analyse the influence of potential confounders (age, BMI and cardiorespiratory fitness) on these sex differences. Sixty-three participants were recruited. Participants performed 20 min of CPR on a manikin. During the CPR trial, percentages of maximal heart rate levels were higher in women than in men (P<0.05) and perceived exertion increased significantly in both sexes over time (P=0.05); furthermore, at the last two time points analysed, women scored higher than men (P<0.05). However, these sex differences disappeared when controlling for age, BMI and cardiorespiratory fitness. In conclusion, indicators of exertion during CPR are higher in women than in men, but these sex differences are because of BMI and differences in physical fitness conditions.

The aim of this paper is to present a smartphone based system for real-time pulse-to-pulse (PP) interval time series acquisition by frame-to-frame camera image processing. The developed smartphone application acquires image frames from built-in rear-camera at the maximum available rate (30 Hz) and the smartphone GPU has been used by Renderscript API for high performance frame-by-frame image acquisition and computing in order to obtain PPG signal and PP interval time series. The relative error of mean heart rate is negligible. In addition, measurement posture and the employed smartphone model influences on the beat-to-beat error measurement of heart rate and HRV indices have been analyzed. Then, the standard deviation of the beat-to-beat error (SDE) was 7.81 ± 3.81 ms in the worst case. Furthermore, in supine measurement posture, significant device influence on the SDE has been found and the SDE is lower with Samsung S5 than Motorola X. This study can be applied to analyze the reliability of different smartphone models for HRV assessment from real-time Android camera frames processing.

Objective: Recently, the DSM-5 has developed a new diagnostic category named "Substance-related and Addictive Disorders". This category includes gambling disorder (GD) as the sole behavioral addiction, but does not include sex addiction (SA). The aim of this study is to investigate whether SA should be classified more closely to other behavioral addictions, via a comparison of the personality characteristics and comorbid psychopathology of individuals with SA with those of individuals with GD, which comes under the category of addiction and related disorders., Method: The sample included 59 patients diagnosed with SA, who were compared to 2190 individuals diagnosed with GD and to 93 healthy controls. Assessment measures included the Diagnostic Questionnaire for Pathological Gambling, the South Oaks Gambling Screen, the Symptom CheckList-90 Items-Revised and the Temperament and Character Inventory-Revised., Results: No statistically significant differences were found between the two clinical groups, except for socio-economic status. Although statistically significant differences were found between both clinical groups and controls for all scales on the SCL-90, no differences were found between the two clinical groups. The results were different for personality characteristics: logistic regression models showed that sex addictive behavior was predicted by a higher education level and by lower scores for TCI-R novelty-seeking, harm avoidance, persistence and self-transcendence. Being employed and lower scores in cooperativeness also tended to predict the presence of sex addiction., Conclusions: While SA and GD share some psychopathological and personality traits that are not present in healthy controls, there are also some diagnostic-specific characteristics that differentiate between the two clinical groups. The catalytic activity of Pd catalysts supported on Ce0.73Tb0.27Ox/SiO2, Ce0.6Zr0.4Ox/SiO2, Ce0.73Tb0.27Ox/La2O3-Al2O3 and Ce0.6Zr0.4Ox/La2O3-Al2O3 was studied using the reduction of NO by CO. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray fluorescence, surface area, X-ray diffraction, temperature-programmed reduction, CO chemisorption and oxygen storage capacity. Temperature-programmed reduction results indicated that Tb or Zr incorporation improves the reducibility and oxygen storage capacity. CO chemisorption data suggested the presence of large PdO particles due to the low CO/Pd ratio. No significant differences were obtained in light off temperatures (TLight off) for all Pd catalysts and the most active was 1.5%Pd/Ce0.6Zr0.4Ox/SiO2., (Copyright © 2014. Published by Elsevier B.V.)

The aim of the present study was to assess the acute effects of small changes in bicycle saddle height on gross efficiency (GE) and lower-limb kinematics. Well-trained cyclists (n = 14) performed a submaximal pedaling test (~70-75% of the v[Combining Dot Above]O2max) at constant cadence (90 rpm). It consisted of 3 randomized sets of 6 minutes with the preferred saddle height, 2% higher and 2% lower. Gross efficiency was significantly lower and oxygen consumption (v[Combining Dot Above]O2) was significantly higher when raising the saddle (GE = 19.9 ± 1.5%; V[Combining Dot Above]O2max = 43.8 ml·kg·min) than when lowering it (GE = 20.4 ± 1.3%; V[Combining Dot Above]O2 = 42.8 ml·kg·min). Additionally, a change of 0.8% in GE (20.6 ± 1.6% to 19.8 ± 1.6%, p < 0.05) was observed when comparing the positions where the best and worst GE was obtained. A significant effect of the small changes in saddle height on lower limb kinematics was also observed (p < 0.05). The differences between lower and higher saddle positions, in hip, knee, and ankle joints were an increase of extension (~4, 7, and 8°, respectively), a decrease of flexion (~3, 4, and 4°, respectively) and, consequently, an increase of the range of movement (~1, 3, and 4°, respectively). The results of the present study indicate that small changes in saddle height affected GE and lower limb kinematics The observed changes in lower limb kinematics could justify, in part, the GE changes. Further research should evaluate long-term effects of these small modifications in the seat height on GE and lower limb kinematics.

Background and Study Aims: Lactase non-persistence (LNP), or primary hypolactasia, is a genetic condition that mediates lactose malabsorption and can cause lactose intolerance. Here we report the prevalence of lactose intolerance in a double-blind placebo study., Methods: The LCT C>T-13910 variant was genotyped by RT-PCR in 121 volunteers and lactose malabsorption was assessed using the hydrogen breath test (HBT) after consuming 25 g of lactose. Lactose intolerance was assessed by scoring symptoms (SS) using a standardized questionnaire following challenge with a lactose solution or saccharose placebo., Results: The LNP genotype was observed in 57% of the volunteers, among whom 87% were HBT⁺. In the HBT⁺ group the median SS was 9 and in the HBT⁻ group the median SS was 3 (p < 0.001). No difference was observed in the SS when both groups were challenged with the placebo. The most common symptoms included audible bowel sounds, abdominal pain and meteorism. In the ROC curve analysis, an SS ≥ 6 demonstrated 72% sensitivity and 81% specificity for predicting a positive HBT. To estimate prevalence, lactose intolerance was defined as the presence of an SS ≥ 6 points after subtracting the placebo effect and 34% of the study population met this definition., Conclusions: The LNP genotype was present in more than half of subjects evaluated and the observed prevalence of lactose intolerance was 34%., (© 2014 S. Background: The objective of this study was to determine stress levels during hospitalization in patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). We wanted to relate stress to previous level of quality of life and patients' Social Support., Methods: 80 patients (70.43; SD = 8.13 years old) with COPD were assessed by means of: Hospital Stress Rating Scale, Nottingham Health Profile, St. George's Respiratory Questionnaire and Social Support Scale., Results: COPD patients' stress levels are lower than expected independently from the severity or number of previous hospitalizations. Linear regression analysis shows the predictive value of Quality of Life and Social Support on stress level during hospitalization (p < 0.0001)., Conclusion: HRQOL and social support can be associated with stress during hospitalization.

Purpose: Supplementation with inorganic nitrate has been suggested to be an ergogenic aid for athletes as nitric oxide donor. The purpose of this study was to determine whether ingestion of inorganic sodium nitrate benefits well-trained athletes performing a 40-min exercise test in laboratory conditions. In addition, we investigated the effect of this supplement on plasma levels of endothelin-1 (ET-1) and in nitrated proteins., Methods: Thirteen trained athletes participated in this randomized, double-blind, crossover study. They performed a 40-min cycle ergometer distance-trial test after two 3-d periods of dietary supplementation with sodium nitrate (10 mg·kg of body mass) or placebo., Results: Concentration of plasma nitrate (256 ± 35 μM) and nitrite (334 ± 86 nM) increased significantly (P < 0.05) after nitrate supplementation compared with placebo (nitrate: 44 ± 11 μM; nitrite: 187 ± 43 nM). In terms of exercise performance, there were no differences in either the mean distance (nitrate: 26.4 ± 1.1 km; placebo: 26.3 ± 1.2 km; P = 0.61) or mean power output (nitrate: 258 ± 28 W; placebo: 257 ± 28 W; P = 0.89) between treatments. Plasma ET-1 increased significantly (P < 0.05) just after exercise in nitrate (4.0 ± 0.8 pg·mL) and placebo (2.4 ± 0.4 pg·mL) conditions. This increase was significantly greater (P < 0.05) in the nitrate group. Levels of nitrated proteins did not differ between treatments (nitrate: preexercise, 91% ± 23%; postexercise, 81% ± 23%; placebo: preexercise, 95% ± 20%; postexercise, 99% ± 19%)., Conclusion: Sodium nitrate supplementation did not improve a 40-min distance-trial performance in endurance athletes. In addition, concentration of plasma ET-1 increased significantly after exercise after supplementation with sodium nitrate.

In cycling, proper saddle height is important because it contributes to the mechanical work of the lower limb joints, thus altering pedaling efficiency. The appropriate method to select optimal saddle height is still unknown. This study was conducted to compare a static (anthropometric measurements) vs. a dynamic method (2D analysis) to adjust saddle height. Therefore, an examination of the relationship between saddle height, anthropometrics, pedaling angles, and hamstring flexibility was carried out. Saddle height outside of the recommended range (106-109% of inseam length) was observed in 56.5% of the subjects. Inappropriate knee flexion angles using the dynamic method were observed in 26% of subjects. The results of this study support the concept that adjusting saddle height to 106-109% of inseam length may not ensure an optimal knee flexion (30-40°). To solve these discrepancies, we applied a multiple linear regression to study the relationship between anthropometrics, pedaling angles, and saddle height. The results support the contention that saddle height, inseam length, and knee angle are highly related (R = 0.963, p < 0.001). We propose a novel equation that relates these factors to recommend an optimal saddle height (108.6-110.4% of inseam length).

Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of NEPs in prison to reduce the prevalence of infections associated with intravenous drug use and to know more about acceptance of the program by inmates and staff., Material and Methods: cross-sectional observational study at baseline, 6 and 12 months and 10 years of program development. Interviews were conducted with program users, as well as random sample surveys of officials at the various cuts, and a random sample of inmates from the centre after10 years. Activity indicators of the program were recorded continuously, and the prevalence of HIV, HBV and HCV at baseline and after 10 years was evaluated. For the statistical analysis, the chi-square test was used with the Yates correction when necessary., Results: In ten years we have supplied a total of 15,962 syringes to 429 users, (average 20.2 users/month), and 11,327 (70.9%) were returned. The prevalence of HIV infection decreased from 21% in 1999 to 8.5% in 2009, HCV prevalence from 40% to 26.1% (p <0.01), finding no significant differences in the prevalence of HBsAg +. Most of the inmates and civil servants believe that the program did not increase intravenous drug use and improves hygienic living conditions in prison., Conclusions: After ten years of development of the NEP, there was a significant decrease in the prevalence of HIV and HCV in the prison population at the centre, and the program is accepted as beneficial by most of the inmates and staff participating in the survey.

Unlabelled: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a progressive disease with dyspnoea perception as a main symptom. In severe stages, dyspnoea can constitute a risk factor for depression, anxiety and somatization disorders., Objective: The objective was to evaluate the presence of these psychopathologies based on dyspnoea and severity stages in patients with COPD., Materials and Methods: Patients (n = 51) were evaluated by means of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the dyspnoea scale (MRC), the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28) and spirometric criteria., Results: The increase in dyspnoea level and disease severity lead to a progressive worsening of anxiety, depressive and somatic symptoms with clinical relevance (P < 0.05). There was a significant correlation between those parameters (P < 0.05)., Conclusions: The early detection and treatment of these psychopathologies associated with dyspnoea and progression of the disease must be taken into account in this complex pathology., (Copyright © 2010 SEGG. Introduction: The scrapie prion protein (PrPsc) requires the cellular prion protein (PrPc) for its propagation and replication. In this work we studied the expression and localization of the PrPc in the central nervous system (SNC) of the rat, mouse, cat, cow and human, using immunohistochemistry and Western blot techniques to understand more about prionopathies and Alzheimer's disease (EA)., Material and Methods: For the immunohistochemistry study we used human, cat, rat and cow samples to analyse frontal, temporal and occipital cortex, as well as the hippocampus and the thalamus. For the Western blot analysis we used mouse, cat, cow and human brain samples., Results: We observed a decrease in the amount of PrPc in the SNC in a rostrocaudal shift in the species mentioned above. We observed inhibitory cells in the cat cortex. The Western blot analysis showed a similar pattern of expression in the different species studied with a preponderance of the diglycosylated band, in relation to the other bands observed in the analysis., Discussion: These data suggest that in prionopathies PrPsc could be transmitted and could be replicated in and from the areas with most expression of PrPc. Similarly, a higher amount of this protein (PrPc) in some brain areas could explain some histopathological aspects of EA., Conclusions: Our findings support the hypothesis of a retrograde transport of PrPsc in the SNC. PrPc could be related to the pathophysiology of EA.

The cellular prion protein (PrP(C)) is a membrane-bound glycoprotein especially abundant in the central nervous system (CNS). The scrapie prion protein (PrP(Sc,) also termed prions) is responsible of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE), a group of neurodegenerative diseases which affect humans and other mammal species, although the presence of PrP(C) is needed for the establishment and further evolution of prions. The present work compares the expression and localization of PrP(C) between healthy human brains and those suffering from Alzheimer disease (AD). In both situations we have observed a rostrocaudal decrease in the amount of PrP(C) within the CNS, both by immunoblotting and immunohistochemistry techniques. PrP(C) is higher expressed in our control brains than in AD cases. There was a neuronal loss and astogliosis in our AD cases. There was a tendency of a lesser expression of PrP(C) in AD cases than in healthy ones. And in AD cases, the intensity of the expression of the unglycosylated band is higher than the di- and monoglycosylated bands. With regards to amyloid plaques, those present in AD cases were positively labeled for PrP(C), a result which is further supported by the presence of PrP(C) in the amyloid plaques of a transgenic line of mice mimicking AD. Background: Although colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers and a major cause of cancer related mortality, very little is known about why screening adherence rates are low. First-degree relatives of CRC patients are the largest group of individuals at increased risk of CRC. Psychosocial factors related to CRC screening adherence were examined in a sample of siblings of individuals diagnosed with CRC., Method: To identify psychosocial factors related with participation in cancer screening examinations, 90 siblings of CRC patients were recruited. Adherence to screening by fecal occult blood test, flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy was the relevant factor. Sociodemographic variables, health locus of control (HLOC), perceived social support, knowledge about CRC and coping strategies were independent measures., Results: Significant differences were found in age, gender, retirement status, knowledge of sibling's illness, HLOC-powerful others, coping strategies (positive thinking, blaming others, seeking social support), perceived social support types (listening, affective, material) and social support sources (friends, work colleagues and health staff). Using stepwise logistic regression, the strongest predictor of adherence was knowledge of sibling's illness., Conclusions: The findings suggest that effective strategies to increase participation in CRC screening may include efforts to improve knowledge of sibling's illness, material social support and advice from health staff.

Zebrafish are typically used as a model system to study various aspects of developmental biology, largely as a consequence of their ex vivo development, high degree of transparency, and, of course, ability to perform forward genetic mutant screens. More recently, zebrafish have been developed as a model system with which to study circadian clocks. Cell lines generated from early-stage zebrafish embryos contain clocks that are directly light-responsive. We describe recent experiments using single-cell luminescent imaging approaches to study clock function in this novel cell line system. Furthermore, studies examining the process of entrainment to light pulses within this cell population are described in this review, as are experiments examining light-responsiveness of early-stage zebrafish embryos.

Previous studies have shown that acute hypobaric hypoxia, obtained in a hypobaric chamber, and subsequent reoxygenation, give rise to modifications of the erythrocyte membrane lipid dynamics, resulting in an increased lateral diffusivity of the membrane lipids, and this was interpreted as the result of a modified lipid-protein interaction. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of the reoxygenation condition in individuals after 3 days at an altitude of 3,500 m above sea level. Reoxygenation was a consequence of returning to sea level. Resting blood samples from both conditions were obtained, and erythrocytes were separated and immediately lysed for membrane isolation. We measured the bilayer polarity in membranes with Laurdan, a fluorescent probe. We also measured malondialdehyde in membrane lipids, an indicator of oxidative damage. We found a 12% (p = 0.016, n = 7) increase in the polarity of the membrane bilayer surface, and an increase of 70% (p = 0.005, n = 7) in the formation of malondialdehyde in the membrane after the reoxygenation condition. The membrane bilayer polarity increase is due to an oxidative modification of the phospholipid backbone after reoxygenation. People working and/or recreating at moderate altitude (3,500 m) may be at risk of erythrocyte membrane oxidative damage upon returning to sea level, and therefore a better understanding of the processes occurring upon reoxygenation may lead to proposed strategies to minimize this effect.

Sludge management arises as a relevant problem after being accumulated in primary ponds of septage treatment plants. One of the most attractive options for sludge disposal is its use in agriculture and then specific guidelines regarding hygienic quality must be fulfilled. This study aimed at evaluating the storage time needed to inactivate Ascaris eggs and Salmonella in sludge accumulated in a primary pond treating septage. Raw septage exhibited very low concentrations of viable Ascaris eggs, thus experiments with Ascaris suum eggs spiking were conducted. The concentration of Ascaris eggs in the solids accumulated at the bottom of the pond was 20 eggs/g of total solids (g TS) at the time of pond closure. Although it decreased, some eggs remained viable (0.59 mean viable eggs/g TS) up to 20 months of in-pond storage of the biosolids. Salmonella survival was studied after developing an analytical method that inhibited the native flora. Sludge was seeded with Salmonella enteritidis. An equation adequately describing Salmonella die-off in biosolids subjected to 115 days of in-pond storage/dewatering, was found to be represented by the regression: y = log MPN Salmonella/g TS = 6.67 x t(-0.086), with t = storage time elapsed in days. The initial concentration was 7.0 x 10(6) MPN/g TS and the removal efficiency was 99%.

Waste stabilization ponds (WSP) are an often-used option to treat faecal sludges collected from on-site sanitation systems. Since agricultural use is one of the most attractive options for sludge disposal, specific guidelines on the hygienic sludge quality must be fulfilled, such as for viable helminth eggs and Salmonella sp. Although Salmonella isolation methods are well known for other types of samples, they are not suitable for faecal sludge. The reason can be attributed to the co-existence of a native bacterial sludge flora masking Salmonella development, especially if this bacteria is present at low concentrations. In order to select the best methodology for Salmonella recovery from septage sludge, different culture media were assayed at different incubation periods and temperatures. The proposed methodology for Salmonella recovery from sludge can be summarised as follows: (1) enrichment in Rappaport-Vassiliadis broth at 43 degrees C, 48 hours, and (2) isolation in XLD agar at 40 degrees C, 24 hours. Identification of suspected colonies by biochemical tests: TSI, LIA, urease and serological confirmation with Group O Antigen.

Human red blood cells anion exchange protein (band 3) exposed to peroxyl radicals produced by thermolysis of 2,2'-azo-bis(2-amidinopropane) (AAPH) is degraded by proteinases that prevent accumulation of oxidatively damaged proteins. To assess whether this degradation affects anion transport capacity we used the anionic fluorescent probe 2-[N-(7-nitrobenz-2-oxa-1,3-diazol-4-y) amino] ethanosulfonate (NBD-taurine). A decrease of band 3 function was observed after exposure to peroxyl radicals. In the presence of proteinase inhibitors the decrement of anion transport through band 3 was smaller indicating that removal achieved by proteinases includes oxidized band 3 which still retain transport ability. Proteinases recognize band 3 aggregates produced by peroxyl radicals as was evaluated by immunoblotting. It is concluded that decrease of band 3 transport capacity may result from a direct protein oxidation and from its degradation by proteinases and that band 3 aggregates removal may prevent macrophage recognition of the senescent condition which would lead to cell disposal.

We have previously shown that subjects exposed to acute hypobaric hypoxia display an erythrocyte membrane protein band 3 with an increased susceptibility to proteolytic degradation. We suggested it was due to an oxidative damage of band 3. We now report that exposure to hypobaric hypoxia followed by reoxygenation affects protein band 3 functions such as anion transport and binding of glyceraldehyde-3P-dehydrogenase. Transport capacity was assessed with the fluorescent probe 2-[N-(7-nitrobenz-2-oxa-1,3-diazol-4-yl)amino] ethanesulfonate (NBD-taurine). Binding capacity was evaluated from the activity of the membrane-associated enzyme. Healthy young men were exposed for 20 min to hypobaric hypoxia, simulating an altitude of 4,500 m above sea level and after recompression band 3 function was assessed. An inhibition of band 3 anion transport function and a decrease in the binding of glyceraldehyde-3P-dehydrogenase to band 3 were observed. Evidence is given supporting the hypothesis that functional alteration of band 3 is due to its oxidative modification originated as a consequence of the exposure to hypobaric hypoxia and further reoxygenation.

Implant dentistry has evolved from a functional replacement of teeth to an aesthetically driven replacement of the natural tooth system. An immediate implant insertion after extraction may maintain the crestal bone and the interdental gingival soft tissue. With proper design, the implant gingival complex will heal to restore the correct gingival environment. In this prospective study, 18 Osseotite (3i, USA) implants were placed in 13 patients (8 women and 5 men with an average age of 32 years), using an immediate implant placement protocol and immediate loading by provisional crowns. Using the life table analysis method, the cumulative implant success rate was calculated at 100 per cent. A one-year interim report indicates that the implant developed and extended; functional osseous state show a predictable and reliable method after one year follow up period.

Many epidemiological studies have analyzed suicidal ideation in clinical samples, but only a few have been performed in the general population. We present the results of a two-stage epidemiological study in the general population on the island of Formentera (Balearic Islands, Spain), which used the 28-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28) in the first stage (n = 697) and the Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (SCAN) in the second (n = 242). We also recorded medical illnesses diagnosed in the subjects at the second stage. Four items on the GHQ-28 ask directly about suicidal thoughts or ideation. From the sample, 6.5% have reported suicidal ideation. Mental disorders are the most important factor associated with suicidal ideation; medical illnesses seem to play a secondary role.

Objectives: This study focuses on the comorbidity between medical and psychiatric illnesses in a sample taken from the general population., Methods: We design a two-stage epidemiological community study in the island of Formentera (Spain), using the Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (SCAN). In the first stage, the sample (N=697) was screened using the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28). In the second stage, the SCAN, subjects' clinical histories and General Practitioners' diagnosis were used to evaluate psychiatric disorders and medical illnesses. The final sample comprised 242 subjects., Results: Subjects with diagnosed ICD-10 mental disorders presented higher comorbidity with medical pathologies than the group of respondents without psychiatric diagnosis, although the differences were not statistically significant. Of the psychiatric conditions, mood disorders (in which differences were significant) and neurotic disorders were the ones that most frequently presented comorbidity, followed by sleep disorders. Mean scores on the GHQ-28 used at the screening stage, and mean scores on neurotic, depressive and somatic symptoms on the SCAN, were significantly higher in the comorbid group. Comorbidity was more frequent in females., Conclusion: More studies on comorbidity in general population are required, with diagnostic instruments that cover the whole of the psychiatric spectrum and correct assessment systems for medical diagnosis.

Background: Smoking is the main single avoidable cause of death in our country. Little research in the treatment of such disorder has been made., Aim: To report the results of a prospective follow up for one year of outpatients from our "Smoker's Clinic" at the Department of Psychiatry of the Catholic University., Patients and Methods: One hundred twenty-seven patients (84 male, aged 21 to 70 years old), with DSM-IV criteria for nicotine dependence, were included in a total of 18 groups. Each group received an intensive treatment program of 10 sessions with cognitive-behavioral relapse prevention techniques and nicotine replacement. Patients with active psychiatric diseases were not included in the program., Results: Eighty-seven percent of subjects were abstinent at the first month and 50% were still abstinent after twelve months of follow up. We did not find differences in gender, age, previous psychiatric disease, number of cigarettes and breath carbon monoxide level between abstinent and non abstinent patients after 12 months of follow up., Conclusion: This intensive nicotine dependence treatment in seriously dependent patients, proved to be successful, regardless of the previous psychiatric history.

Background: The aims of this two-stage epidemiological study were: to determine the prevalence of psychiatric disorders in the general population of the island of Formentera (Balearic Isles, Spain); to provide reference data for subsequent health care planning; and to test a relatively new assessment instrument, the Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (SCAN), in a community study., Method: It was designed as a cross-sectional two-stage community study using the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28) at stage one (N = 697), and the SCAN at stage two (N = 242)., Results: Estimated prevalence of disorders was 21.4% according to the ICD-10 classification system. Neurotic and somatoform disorders were the most prevalent, followed by substance-related, sleep and mood disorders. Total prevalence of mental disorders showed no significant differences according to sex. As regards age, mood and anxiety disorders were most prevalent in the 30- to 50-year age group, and sleep disorders were more prevalent in the older group., Conclusion: Prevalences of mental disorders in Formentera are higher than those found in two-stage studies in other countries and similar to those found in most studies in Spain, despite the variety of the instruments used.

The epidemiological data of prevalence of mental disorders according to gender differences are controversial. We analysed the prevalence among men and women via a two-stage epidemiological community study using the GHQ-28 and the SCAN on the island of Formentera (Spain). There are no sex differences in total prevalence; nevertheless some significant differences are detected when data is analysed on specific disorders. Affective disorders, sleep disorders and neurotic and somatoform disorders are more prevalent among women, whereas men have more psychoactive substance use disorders. Comorbidity with medical illness are higher in women but differences are not significant. These findings suggest the need to standardise procedures and instruments in these kinds of studies. This is because one of the bias could be the difference in the number of disorders included in the instrument design used (in our study, sleep disorders and psychoactive substance use disorders were included and personality disorders were excluded.

Background: Spanish prisons have a high number of inmates whose behaviour puts them at risk of being infected by hepatitis C virus (HCV). The object of this study was to establish the prevalence of this infection and its associated factors in the prison population of the north-east of Spain., Methods: Inmates in seven prisons in the north-east of Spain were studied. Socio-demographic and prison variables were gathered, as well as risk factors for infection by HCV. Antibodies against HCV were determined (EIA and INNO-LIA HCV III), Hepatitis B virus (VHB) (EIA), and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) (EIA and Western-Blott). The analysis of associated factors was based on logistic regression., Results: Of the total number of inmates studied, 47.9% presented HCV antibodies. There was greater prevalence in the case of the following: UDVP (89.6%); those who shared needles (94%); those infected by HIV (92.7%); carriers of Australia antigen (65.1%) and antibodies to the HBV core antigen (79.8%); those who had been in prison before (60.9%); unmarried men (54.8%); gypsies (52%); unqualified workers (50.4%); those who had no basic school qualifications (50.9%); those with tattoos (66.7%); and those with a background of self-inflicted injuries (79.3%). In the logistic regression analysis the variables associated to infection by HCV were: UDVP (OR = 33.3; I.C. 95% = 25-50), HBcAc (+) (OR = 4.1; I.C. 95% = 1.1-5.3), age (OR = 0.98; I.C. 95% = 0.96-1.00), months in prison (OR = 1.011; I.C. 95% = 1.004-1.019) and a background of previous prison sentences (OR = 2.3; I.C. 95% = 1.5-3.6)., Conclusions: The prevalence of infection by HCV in prison inmates is very high. It is therefore recommended that preventive measures be increased (harm reduction programmes) and that clinical and analysis protocols be drawn up for those infected and for treatment in cases of chronic active hepatitis in order to control this serious public health problem.

The effect of several aliphatic aldehydes on lipid peroxidation was evaluated by measuring the oxygen uptake rate, thiobarbituric acid-reactive products formation and the emitted visible chemiluminescence intensity. Measurements were carried out in brain homogenates and erythrocyte plasma membrane and liver microsomal fractions. In all systems studied, aldehydes (25 mmol/L) (e.g. acetaldehyde, 2,2-dimethylpropanal), increased the intensity of the luminescence associated with the oxidation process. In contrast, aldehyde incorporation decreased TBARS production and the rate of oxygen uptake. The increased luminescence intensity is explained in terms of secondary reactions of aldehyde derived free radicals. These results clearly indicate that extreme care must be exercised in the interpretation of chemiluminescence data in the presence of aldehydes.

We have presented a working hypothesis showing the possible interrelations between proliferative, aproliferative and autoimmune disorders that may follow infection with lymphotropic herpesviruses. Aproliferative disorders in this context may also indicate immune or hematopoietic deficiency. Although this hypothesis can currently be best documented with the lymphotropic viruses (herpesviruses as well as similarly HTLV and HIV), the model may apply as well--with certain variations--to other viral infections such as with hepatitis virus B or C with acute or chronic infectious diseases, post-infectious arthritis, aplastic anemia, and other autoimmune liver diseases, as well as neoplastic diseases (hepatocellular carcinoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia). The working hypothesis as depicted in Figure 2 permits a preview of which combinations of symptoms may occur in an individual disease independent of its initial classification and what clinical testing should be done respectively, and it also permits certain prognostic considerations. The above-mentioned transitions or combinations of various disease patterns have been repeatedly described in the medical literature (to refer to only a few examples: APL and MPD, HD and MDS, SLE and aplastic anemia, SLE and Kikuchi's disease; 23, 80-83). Finally the hypothesis can ideally serve as the basis for future planning of clinical research.
