This essay discusses the current state of and potential future directions for information systems education structured around several key themes that have emerged as central in several large-scale IS education initiatives over the past 15 years. The core idea that connects all of these themes is the centrality of IS as a transformative enabler for virtually all goal-directed human activities. The essay emphasizes the role of IS as the initial integrative discipline that for decades has prepared its students to identify opportunities to fundamentally change multiple target domains with computational capabilities. Furthermore, the discussion recognizes the distinctive focus of IS on bringing multiple technologies together into systems that serve organizational and societal goals and underscores the responsibility to carefully consider implications and potential consequences of technology-based solutions. The essay also acknowledges the essential roles of formal quality assurance mechanisms (such as accreditation) and education-focused research as essential resources for the future of the discipline.

Current academic and industry discussions regarding systems development project approaches increasingly focus on agile development and/or DevOps, as these approaches are seen as more modern, streamlined, flexible, and, therefore, effective as compared to traditional plan-driven approaches. This extends to the current pedagogy for teaching systems analysis and design (SA&D). However, overemphasizing agile and DevOps neglects broader dimensions that are essential for planning and executing enterprise-level systems projects. Thus, a dilemma may arise: do we teach agile and DevOps techniques that may be inadequate for enterprise-level projects or do we teach the wider range of plan-driven skills and techniques that may conflict with the tenets and benefits of agile and DevOps? In this paper, we advocate for resolving this dilemma by adopting a generalized process framework that both fully supports enterprise-level projects but can also be selectively scaled back toward increased agility for smaller, less complex projects. In its full realization, this framework combines extensive project planning and up-front requirements with iterative delivery -- an increasingly popular approach today for enterprise projects. In scaling back toward agile, the framework carefully accounts for system, environment, and team characteristics. Further, the model emphasizes issues frequently underemphasized by agile approaches, including the use of external software such as commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS), Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), and open source products and components; the need for business-oriented project planning and justification; and support for change management to ensure successful system adoption. The framework thereby flexibly accommodates the full range of activities that software projects must support to be successful.

Poor diet, obesity and a sedentary lifestyle have a significant impact on natural microbiota disorders; specifically, the intestinal one. This in turn can lead to a multitude of organ dysfunctions. The gut microbiota contains more than 500 species of bacteria and constitutes 95% of the total number of cells in the human body, thus contributing significantly to the host’s resistance to infectious diseases. Nowadays, consumers have turned to purchased foods, especially those containing probiotic bacteria or prebiotics, that constitute some of the functional food market, which is constantly expanding. Indeed, there are many products available that incorporate probiotics, such as yogurt, cheese, juices, jams, cookies, salami sausages, mayonnaise, nutritional supplements, etc. The probiotics are microorganisms that, when taken in sufficient amounts, contribute positively to the health of the host and are the focus of interest for both scientific studies and commercial companies. Thus, in the last decade, the introduction of DNA sequencing technologies with subsequent bioinformatics processing contributes to the in-depth characterization of the vast biodiversity of the gut microbiota, their composition, their connection with the physiological function—known as homeostasis—of the human organism, and their involvement in several diseases. Therefore, in this study, we highlighted the extensive investigation of current scientific research for the association of those types of functional foods containing probiotics and prebiotics in the diet and the composition of the intestinal microbiota. As a result, this study can form the foundation for a new research path based on reliable data from the literature, acting a guide in the continuous effort to monitor the rapid developments in this field.

Emissions of marine traffic can be lowered by switching to less polluting fuels or by investing in exhaust aftertreatment. Electrostatic precipitation is a widely used method for particle removal but it is not currently used in combination with marine engines. This study presents the particle filtration characteristics of an emission reduction system designed for marine applications and consisting of a scrubber and a Wet Electrostatic Precipitator (WESP) in series. Partial flow of exhaust from a 1.6 MW marine engine, operated with light and heavy fuel oil, was led to the system. Particle concentrations were measured before the system, after the scrubber and after the WESP. Particle removal characteristics were determined for different engine loads. The scrubber alone removed 15–55% of non-volatile particle number, 30–40% of particle mass and 30–40% of black carbon mass depending on engine load, when HFO fuel was used. By studying particle size distributions, scrubber was found also to generate particles seen as an additional mode in 20–40 nm size range. The system combining the scrubber and WESP removed over 98.5% of particles in number, mass and black carbon metrics when HFO fuel was used. With MDO fuel, 96.5% of PN and 99% of black carbon were removed.

Daily, a lot of food is wasted, and vegetables, fruit, and cereals as well as marine products represent the major sources of unwanted by-products. The sustainability, waste recovery, and revalorization of food by-products have been proposed as the main goals of the so-called circular economy. In fact, food wastes are enriched in by-products endowed with beneficial effects on human health. Grape, olives, vegetables, and rice contain different compounds, such as polyphenols, dietary fibers, polysaccharides, vitamins, and proteins, which exert antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, inhibiting pro-oxidant genes and the Nuclear Factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-kβ) pathway, as demonstrated by in vitro and in vivo experiments. Dietary fibers act upon the gut microbiota, expanding beneficial bacteria, which contribute to healthy outcomes. Furthermore, marine foods, even including microalgae, arthropods, and wastes of fish, are rich in carotenoids, polyphenols, polyunsaturated fatty acids, proteins, and chitooligosaccharides, which afford antioxidant and anti-inflammatory protection. The present review will cover the major by-products derived from food wastes, describing the mechanisms of action involved in the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, as well as the modulation of the gut microbiota. The effects of some by-products have also been explored in clinical trials, while others, such as marine by-products, need more investigation for their full exploitation as bioactive compounds in humans. Many policy documents have called for a higher degree of circularity in the use of critical raw materials (CRMs). This paper examines how this objective has been translated from EU policy to legislation. The analysis presents three regulatory strategies used in the current framework to promote the recovery of CRMs: indirect methods, direct regulation of single CRMs, and collective regulation of all CRMs. The indirect approach has struggled to effectively target CRMs. Direct regulation of single CRMs provides an alternative, but other than the new Batteries Regulation no legislation has introduced strong obligations requiring recovery of single CRMs. The proposed CRM Regulation would codify the main concepts relevant for governing and regulating CRMs collectively. While the legislation would create a solid foundation for these processes, its failure to put forward immediate or long-term solutions to CRM recovery remains a serious shortcoming. Recovery of many seal populations has intensified seal‐fishery conflicts. Acoustic deterrent devices (ADDs), designed to deter seals while minimising collateral harm, provide a potential solution. We investigated feasibility of ADDs to protect a European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) fishery in the River Iijoki, Finland, which enters the Baltic Sea. A sound barrier produced by a line of ADDs across the river efficiently prevented grey (Halichoerus grypus) and ringed (Pusa hispida) seals from passing the barrier line, thereby increasing catches, decreasing damage to fishing gear and catch and resulting in fewer seal sightings in the area safeguarded by ADDs. Hence, blocking access of seals to a river or its section by ADDs during a critical fishing period is a promising method for reducing seal‐induced catch losses. The corrosion inhibition performance of L(-)- Cystine on copper alloy immersed in 2 M HNO3 solution is investigated using weight loss, potentiodynamic polarisation, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Potentiodynamic polarization measurements confirmed that L(-)-Cystine behaved as mixed-type inhibitor. The highest corrosion inhibition efficiency was 98.99% at 298 K and decreased with increasing temperature. The Nyquist plots displayed an increase in the capacitive loops with increasing the concentration of the inhibitor. The mechanism of inhibition obeys Langmuir isotherm. This study examines the precision of spatial data required for archaeological sites in Finland from a forest management perspective, identifies archaeological sites at risk due to forestry activities, and investigates potential collaboration between archaeology and forestry to enhance the preservation and understanding of these sites. Due to outdated methods and the lack of systematic field surveys, challenges in achieving accurate spatial data for archaeological sites are highlighted through a literature review, case studies, and fieldwork. Our findings indicate that a significant portion of sites lack boundary delineation, exposing them to the risk of destruction. Moreover, the study reveals limited collaboration between the archaeology and forestry sectors, despite mutual interests in site preservation. We advocate for improved spatial data accuracy using modern technological methods like precision GPS and enhanced cooperation between archaeologists and forestry professionals. This approach aims to protect Finland's archaeological heritage while promoting responsible forestry practices. Notably, fieldwork enabled the precise determination of the location of Finland's first separate plague cemetery, underscoring the value of direct field verification in enriching historical and archaeological understanding. Despite all the literature on building energy management, building-stock-scale models depicting its impact for energy-market-scale optimisation models are lacking. To address this shortcoming, an open-source tool called ArchetypeBuildingModel.jl has been developed for aggregating building-stock-level data into simplified lumped-capacitance thermal models compatible with existing open-source energy-system modelling frameworks. This paper aims to demonstrate the feasibility of these simplified thermal models by comparing their performance against dedicated building simulation software, as well as examining their sensitivity to key modelling and parameter assumptions. Modelling and parameter assumptions comparable to the existing literature achieved an acceptable performance according to ASHRAE Guideline 14 across all tested buildings and nodal configurations. The most robust performance was achieved with a period of variations above 13 days and interior node depth between 0.1 and 0.2 for structural thermal mass calibrations, and with external shading coefficients between 0.6 and 1.0 and solar heat gain convective fractions between 0.4 and 0.6 for solar heat gain calibrations. Furthermore, three-plus-node lumped-capacitance thermal models are recommended when modelling buildings with structures varying in terms of thermal mass. Nevertheless, the ArchetypeBuildingModel.jl performance was found to be robust against uncertain key parameter assumptions, making it plausible for energy-market-scale applications. Introduction: Pain management is paramount in paediatric dental care, influencing patient cooperation and future perceptions of dental treatment. The widely used Inferior Alveolar Nerve Block (IANB) anaesthesia faces challenges in children due to anatomical variations. The position of the mandibular foramen, which evolves with age, growth patterns, and facial types, necessitates customised approaches for effective paediatric pain management. Aim: To identify the position of the mandibular foramen amongst children aged 7-14 years with respect to age, gender, and facial types. Materials and Methods: In a cross-sectional study conducted in West Bengal, India, 126 children aged 7-14 were investigated from March 2021 to August 2022. The Orthopantomograms (OPG) and lateral cephalograms were assessed for the location of the mandibular foramen with respect to age, sex, and facial type in clear radiographs with normal growth. Statistical analysis encompassed descriptive statistics, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and multiple linear regression analysis. Results: A total of 126 x-rays were analysed across age, gender, and facial types, showing a mean age of 10.78 years. There were 52 (41.3%) males and 74 (58.7%) females. The distribution of subjects according to facial types was as follows: short (n=33, 26.2%), normal (n=19, 15.1%), and long (n=74, 58.7%). The vertical position of the mandibular foramen increased with age. No significant gender difference was observed regarding the vertical position of the mandibular foramen. However, a significant variation across facial types was observed, with individuals with normal faces exhibiting a greater vertical position. Conclusion: This study revealed that the vertical position of the mandibular foramen increases with age. There was no significant difference found between males and females in the location of the mandibular foramen; however, individuals with normal faces exhibited a greater vertical position of the same. Giant inguinal hernias are rare in children, and they represent a unique challenge for pediatric surgeons. The sparse literature includes variable definitions of the disease and different surgical techniques without significant difficulties with the decrease of abdominal domain. We present a prematurely born boy with a unilateral giant inguinal hernia which developed promptly after birth. This case highlights the multiple possible challenges related to giant inguinal hernias in children. We also discuss the possible treatment options and the advantages and disadvantages based on the current literature.

We reported that high estrogen receptor beta (ERβ) expression is independently associated with better prognosis in female colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. However, estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) is expressed at very low levels in normal colon mucosa, and its prognostic role in CRC has not been explored. Herein, we investigated the combined role of ERα and ERβ expression in the prognosis of female patients with CRC, which, to the best of our knowledge, is the first study to investigate this topic. A total number of 306 primary CRCs were immunostained for ERα and ERβ expression. A Cox regression model was used to evaluate overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS).
