209. Dog ownership and physical activity: A review of the evidence

Abstract

Background: Dog walking is a strategy for increasing population levels of physical activity (PA). Numerous cross-sectional studies of the relationship between dog ownership and PA have been conducted. The purpose was to review studies comparing PA of dog owners (DO) to nondog owners (NDO), summarize the prevalence of dog walking, and provide recommendations for research. Methods: A review of published studies (1990-2010) examining DO and NDO PA and the prevalence of dog walking was conducted (N = 29). Studies estimating the relationship between dog ownership and PA were grouped to create a pointestimate using meta-analysis. Results: Most studies were conducted in the last 5 years, were cross-sectional, and sampled adults from Australia or the United States. Approximately 60% of DO walked their dog, with a median duration and frequency of 160 minutes/week and 4 walks/week, respectively. Meta-analysis showed DO engage in more walking and PA than NDO and the effect sizes are small to moderate (d = 0.26 and d = 0.16, respectively). Three studies provided evidence of a directional relationship between dog ownership and walking. Conclusions: Longitudinal and interventional studies would provide stronger causal evidence for the relationship between dog ownership and PA. Improved knowledge of factors associated with dog walking will guide intervention research.

Abstract

Objective: The association between obesity and coronary heart disease (CHD) may have changed over time, for example due to improved pharmacological treatment of CHD risk factors. This meta-analysis of 31 prospective cohort studies explores the influence of calendar period on CHD risk associated with body mass index (BMI). Design and Methods: The relative risks (RRs) of CHD for a five-BMI-unit increment and BMI categories were pooled by means of random effects models. Meta-regression analysis was used to examine the influence of calendar period (>1985 v 1985) in univariate and multivariate analyses (including mean population age as a covariate). Results: The age, sex, and smoking adjusted RR (95% confidence intervals) of CHD for a five-BMI-unit increment was 1.28(1.22:1.34). For underweight, overweight and obesity, the RRs (compared to normal weight) were 1.11(0.91:1.36), 1.31(1.22:1.41), and 1.78(1.55:2.04), respectively. The univariate analysis indicated 31% (95%CI: 56:0) lower RR of CHD associated with a five-BMI-unit increment and a 51% (95%CI: 78: 14)) lower RR associated with obesity in studies starting after 1985 (n ¼ 15 and 10, respectively) compared to studies starting in or before 1985 (n ¼ 16 and 10). However, in the multivariate analysis, only mean population age was independently associated with the RRs for a five-BMI-unit increment and obesity ( 29(95%CI: 55: 5)) and 31(95%CI: 66:3), respectively) per 10-year increment in mean age). Conclusion: This study provides no consistent evidence for a difference in the association between BMI and CHD by calendar period. The mean population age seems to be the most important factor that modifies the association between the risk of CHD and BMI, in which the RR decreases with increasing age.

Abstract

Contrails and especially their evolution into cirrus-like clouds are thought to have very important effects on local and global radiation budgets, though are generally not well represented in global climate models. Lack of contrail parameterisations is due to the limited availability of in situ contrail measurements which are difficult to obtain. Here we present a methodology for successful sampling and interpretation of contrail microphysical and radiative data using both in situ and remote sensing instrumentation on board the FAAM BAe146 UK research aircraft as part of the COntrails Spreading Into Cirrus (COSIC) study. Forecast models were utilised to determine flight regions suitable for contrail formation and sampling; regions that were both free of cloud but showed a high probability of occurrence of air mass being supersaturated with respect to ice. The FAAM research aircraft, fitted with cloud microphysics probes and remote sensing instruments, formed a distinctive spiral-shaped contrail in the predicted area by flying in an orbit over the same ground position as the wind advected the contrails to the east. Parts of these contrails were sampled during the completion of four orbits, with sampled contrail regions being between 7 and 30 min old. Lidar measurements were useful for in-flight determination of the location and spatial extent of the contrails, and also to report extinction values that agreed well with those calculated from the microphysical data. A shortwave spectrometer was also able to detect the contrails, though the signal was weak due to the dispersion and evaporation of the contrails. Post-flight the UK Met Office NAME III dispersion model was successfully used as a tool for modelling the dispersion of the persistent contrail; determining its location and age, and determining when there was interference from other measured other aircraft contrails or when cirrus encroached on the area later in the flight. The persistent contrails were found to consist of small (~10 μm) plate-like crystals where growth of ice crystals to larger sizes (~100 μm) was detected when higher water vapour levels were present. Using the cloud microphysics data, extinction co-efficient values were calculated and found to be 0.01–1 km−1. The contrails formed during the flight (referred to as B587) were found to have a visible lifetime of ~40 min, and limited water vapour supply was thought to have suppressed ice crystal growth.

Abstract

This special issue addresses a number of the key themes that have been surfacing from the literature on distributed leadership (DL) for some time. Together with those papers selected to be included in this special issue, the authors set out both to explore and contribute to a number of the current academic debates in relation to DL, while at the same time examining the extent to which research on DL has permeated the management field. The paper examines a number of key concepts, ideas and themes in relation to DL and, in so doing, highlights the insights offered through new contributions and interpretations. The paper offers a means by which forms of DL might be conceptualized to be better incorporated into researchers' scholarship and research, and a framework is presented which considers a number of different dimensions of DL, how it may be planned, and how it may emerge, together with how it may or may not align with other organizational activities and aspects. © 2011 The Authors. Abstract

Approved innovator products and their noninnovator ‘‘copy’’ versions are likely to vary in their quality, eg, physicochemical characteristics and biological activity, with important implications for clinical efficacy and safety. Therefore, it is important to study and thoroughly evaluate the noninnovator products in comparison with approved products at the preclinical and clinical stages. We have obtained 4 noninnovator interferon (IFN)- b-1a products currently marketed in Latin America and Iran and compared these with approved IFN-b-1a products (Avonex and Rebif) obtained from the same geographical regions with respect to biological potency, estimated by in vitro bioassays, and molecular characteristics, assessed by immunoblotting and high-performance liquid chromatography. In this article, we present our data showing that the noninnovator IFN-b-1a products can vary considerably in their biological potency. In addition, we showed that all IFN-b-1a products formulated with human serum albumin contained variable amounts of higher-molecular-weight aggregates of IFN-b-1a and adducts with human serum albumin, these being more prevalent in 2 noninnovator IFN-b-1a products where biological potency was reduced compared with approved IFN-b-1a products. Additionally, significant lot-to-lot variability was observed for one of the noninnovator products. Taken together, the results of this study highlight the need for not only thorough in vitro characterization, but also preclinical and clinical assessment to ensure patient safety and efficacy.

225. Innovation development – an action learning programme for medical scientists and engineers

Abstract

© 2014, © 2014 Taylor & Francis. There is increasing evidence that action learning is valuable in a higher education setting. This paper goes on to report a personal development programme, based on principles of critical action learning, where the aim is to equip early-career scientists and engineers working in a university setting with the knowledge, skills and confidence to approach the management of innovation. After learning about action learning and critical reflection, the participants, all postdoctorate researchers, completed innovation projects at work, meeting in action learning sets as they proceed. We explain a method of critical thinking before reporting results from an evaluation study based on interviews and focus groups. We consider examples of projects undertaken before considering challenges for students with this approach to learning. Challenges included scepticism about the usefulness of management literature, difficulties in finding ‘problems’ within the constraints of postdoctoral work, and the discomfort and intensiveness of action learning. However, through adaptation by the tutors with students, some significant results were achieved.

Abstract

As part of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project, integrations with a common design have been undertaken with eleven different climate models to compare the response of the Atlantic thermohaline circulation (THC) to time-dependent climate change caused by increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration. Over 140 years, during which the CO2 concentration quadruples, the circulation strength declines gradually in all models, by between 10 and 50%. No model shows a rapid or complete collapse, despite the fairly rapid increase and high final concentration of CO2. The models having the strongest overturning in the control climate tend to show the largest THC reductions. In all models, the THC weakening is caused more by changes in surface heat flux than by changes in surface water flux. No model shows a cooling anywhere, because the greenhouse warming is dominant.

233. Knowledge within small and medium-sized firms: a systematic review of the evidence

Abstract

This paper provides a systematic review of the literature on how SMEs use and acquire knowledge. The review was undertaken as part of the Economic and Social Research Council’s Evolution of Business Knowledge Programme. The paper describes the systematic review protocol and provides a detailed explanation of the methods used. From the review it is evident that SME knowledge research primarily concentrates on the acquisition and use of knowledge, treating it as an asset that is transferred by routines. The findings suggest that research is focused in three main areas. First, focusing on the influence and abilities of the entrepreneur to extract, use and develop knowledge resources. Secondly, research that explores the firm-wide systems and human capital that facilitate knowledge exploration and exploitation. Thirdly, study that examines the institutional context and which is primarily focused on the effectiveness of Government policy. There are also a handful of studies reviewed that reflect a concern with the socially constructed nature of knowledge. From a practical perspective, the review concludes that regeneration policies need to be more flexible and sensitive to the often complex contexts within which knowledge is constructed. From a research perspective, and given the flexible, opportunity-oriented and often novel nature of SMEs identified in these studies, there is a need to consider the relational and embedded qualities of knowledge by which these characteristics are framed; qualities that resist conceptualisation as some form of separable, material asset.

Abstract

IntroductionWomen in conflict-affected countries are at risk of mental disorders such as posttraumatic stress disorder and depression. No studies have investigated the association between experiences of abuse and injustice and explosive anger amongst women in these settings, and the impact of anger on women's health, family relationships and ability to participate in development.MethodsA mixed methods study including an epidemiological survey (n = 1513, 92.6% response) and qualitative interviews (n = 77) was conducted in Timor-Leste. The indices measured included Intermittent Explosive Disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder; severe distress; days out of role (the number of days that the person was unable to undertake normal activities); gender-specific trauma; conflict/violence; poverty; and preoccupations with injustice.ResultsWomen with Intermittent Explosive Disorder (n = 184, 12.2%) were more disabled than those without the disorder (for >5 days out of role, 40.8% versus 31.5%, X2(2) = 12.93 p = 0.0016). Multivariable associations with Intermittent Explosive Disorder, controlling for the presence of PTSD, psychological distress and other predictors in the model, included the sense of being sick (OR 1.73; 95% CI 1.08¿2.77); victimization as a result of helping the resistance movement (OR 2.33, 95% CI 1.48¿3.68); war-related trauma specific to being a woman (OR 1.95, 95%, CI 1.09¿3.50); ongoing family violence and community conflict (OR 1.88, 95% CI 1.27¿2.77); extreme poverty (OR 1.23, 95%, CI 1.08¿1.39); and distressing preoccupations with injustice (relating to 2/3 historical periods, OR 2.10, 95% CI 1.35¿3.28). In the qualitative study, women elaborated on the determinants of anger and its impact on their health, family and community functioning, child-rearing, and capacity to engage in development. This study presents design and construction of a tri-generation system (thermal efficiency, 63%), powered by neat nonedible plant oils (jatropha, pongamia and jojoba oil or standard diesel fuel), besides studies on plant performance and economics. Proposed plant consumes fuel (3 l/h) and produce ice (40 kg/h) by means of an adsorption refrigerator powered from the engine waste jacket water heat. Potential savings in green house gas (GHG) emissions of trigeneration system in comparison to cogeneration (or single generation) has also been discussed.

The plant in Minas Gerais, Brazil, commissioned in 2008, employs a Au-specific flotation scheme using Cytec 7249 and 3473 collectors to recover the majority of the Au, which is present as discrete Au particles. Additional Au is recovered by jigs in the grinding circuit and the jig concentrates are reground, upgraded and subjected to intensive cyanide leaching. The flotation cleaner concentrate is reground and leached using a conventional carbon-in-leach circuit. Plant circuit surveys were carried out after one year to investigate the success of the jig in removing Au from within the circulating load, flotation size by size recovery trends, the suitability of grind size for downstream processes and flotation kinetics. The results showed that overgrinding of Au and subsequent fines losses in the tailings required coarsening of the grind, and this was increased from 90 to 110 micrometres. A gap was indentified in the 30-70 micrometre range where the Au in the circulating load was too fine to be recovered by the jigs but too coarse to escape the cyclone overflow. Abstract

This paper considers the work of the Russian social philosopher and cultural theorist, Mikhail Mikhailovich Bakhtin as a source of understanding for those involved in action learning. Drawing upon data gathered over two years during the evaluation of 20 action learning sets in the north of England, we will seek to work with the ideas of Bakhtin to consider their value for those involved in action learning. We consider key Bakhtin features such as Making Meaning, Participative Thinking, Theoreticism and Presence, Others and Outsideness, Voices and Carnival to highlight how Bakhtin's can enhance our understanding of the nature of action and learning.
