Abstract

Reviewed briefly is the development of a unique vaccine against hCG, which prevents unwanted pregnancy without blocking ovulation and disturbing menstrual regularity. A recombinant version of this vaccine, amenable to largescale production by industry, in both DNA and protein form has been made. Priming with DNA followed by protein improves further its immunogenicity. Mycobacterium indicus pranii (MiP), a cultivable nonpathogenic mycobacteria has been used in the recombinant vaccine as a potent adjuvant. MiP was developed as an immuno-therapeutic vaccine against leprosy. It is approved by the Drugs Controller General of India and USFDA, and has many additional applications in treatment of tuberculosis, curing of ugly ano-genital warts and in prevention and treatment of some cancers.

Abstract

The calculation is carried out using the FPLAPW method in the DFT framework within mBJ and LDA using the WIEN2k code. The investigation of electronic properties showed Ba2VMoO6 to be semi-metal in spin-up and insulation in spin down. In both spin up and spin down channel, direct band gap along with indirect band gap in ΓX direction was observed. For investigation of the optical transitions in this compound, the real and imaginary parts of the dielectric function, reflectivity, refractive index and optical conductivity of real and imaginary parts are calculated and analysed. 214. CeOs4As12: a hybridized gap semiconductor.

Abstract

The ground-state electronic properties of CeOs4As12 have been investigated within the framework of full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method. The effect of exchange correlation functional treated with GGA depicts a zero band gap semiconducting behavior, which turns to open an energy gap of 0.04 eV with inclusion of mBJ potential in the calculation. The presence of strong hybridization of Ce-f electronic states with conduction electrons predominates overall electronic profile, where the effects of spin polarization and localized electrons are also dominated. The brittle nature with the presence of ionic type of interatomic bonding has been observed for this material, whose hardness is also comparable to analogous Ce-filled skutterudites. The sample alloy possesses high reflectivity as evident from optical response, and the absorption coefficient increases dramatically beyond the visible spectral range that determines its optoelectronic applications. Abstract

Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) accounts for the most gynecologic malignancy-associated deaths in the United States. Enhancer of zeste homolog 2 (EZH2), which silences gene expression through generating trimethylation on lysine 27 residue of histone H3 (H3K27Me3), is often overexpressed in EOCs and has been suggested as a therapeutic target. However, the mechanism underlying EZH2 overexpression in EOCs is unknown. Here, we show that EZH2 is upregulated at the transcription level, and two CCAAT boxes in the proximal regions of the human EZH2gene promoter are critical for its transcription inEOCcells. Indeed, NF-YA, the regulatory subunit of the CCAAT-binding transcription factor NF-Y, is expressed at higher levels in human EOCs than in primary human ovarian surface epithelial (HOSE) cells. In addition, there is a positive correlation between expression of NF-YA and EZH2 in EOCs. Notably, high NF-YA expression predicts shorter overall survival in patients with EOCs. The association of NF-YA with the promoter of the human EZH2 gene is enhanced in human EOC cells compared with primary HOSE cells. Significantly, knockdown of NF-YA downregulates EZH2, decreases H3K27Me3 levels, and suppresses the growth of human EOC cells both in vitro and in a xenograft mouse model. Notably, NF-YA knockdown induces apoptosis ofEOCcells and ectopic EZH2 expression partially rescues apoptosis induced by NF-YA knockdown. Together, these data reveal that NF-Y is a key regulator of EZH2 expression and is required for EOC cell proliferation, thus representing a novel target for developing EOC therapeutics. © 2013 American Association for Cancer Research.

Abstract

The electronic and magnetic properties of Fe atomic wire and atomic plane have been theoretically investigated from full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FPLAPW) method within a frame work of density functional theory (DFT). This work is based on the comparative study of number of Fe nanochains with infinite length and infinitely spread Fe nanosheet. A most commonly adopted GGA approximation is used for electron exchange correlation. In our calculation, the property of Fe-chain is predicted to be magnetic metal with the presence of deep valley (in Spin-up DOS) and a peak (in Spin-down DOS) at Fermi level ( E F ) shows the antisymmetric DOS. The presence of antisymmetric DOS is a signature of exchange splitting between the degenerated d-states. The splitting between t 2 g states is very prominent in Fe-chain which enhances the magnetic moment. The magnetic moment decreases with the increase in number of Fe-chains. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

237. Evaluation of truck and agricultural vehicle behavior at reduced conflict intersections.

Abstract

In the US, some states have begun to address rural high-speed intersection crashes by physically restricting minor-road crossing movements to simplify driver decision-making in terms of gap acceptance. These treatments are referred to in Minnesota (USA) as reduced conflict intersections (RCIs). Introduction of RCI design has been successful in preventing severe crashes; however, the unusual design has been met with some apprehension from operators of agricultural equipment and large trucks. In particular concerns have been raised that, as large trucks are required to make U-turn maneuvers, they occupy the travel lanes for longer than would be required for a left-turn or through maneuver from the minor road, and, consequently, are exposed to on-coming high-speed vehicles for longer. In response to these concerns, this paper summarizes results of a study which collected and evaluated large vehicle operational behavior at three rural RCI intersections in Minnesota and three similar non-RCI intersections, which were proximate to the RCI intersections. Data were collected in 2015 using a portable video trailer array. Exposure time, evasive maneuvers, and other metrics were compared between RCI and regular intersections. Exposure time was calculated at both the intersections. Results show that large trucks are exposed 4 to 10 seconds longer while making a through or left turn maneuver at control intersections than they are making a U-turn. The average number of evasive maneuvers per large vehicle at either the merge or U-turn location were much lower than for the control intersection. This is significant since most agencies had concerns about the U-turn creating additional evasive maneuvers. Queue time and travel time were also compared. Gap acceptance behavior shows that minor stream vehicles are more likely responsible for evasive maneuvers of on-coming high-speed vehicles even for the larger accepted gap size at control intersections compared to merge and U-turn sections.
