Abstract

The author discusses the scattering of medium energy pions by nuclei in anticipation of an increase in intensity of about three orders of magnitude from the meson factories. It is shown that pion scattering at around 200 MeV is not likely to vary revealing except in two respects:- (i) the scattering problems itself, and (ii) simple spectroscopy of double charge exchange, which reactions allow the study of the energy states of strange nuclear species such as /sup 5 /Be and /sup 18/C. Nuclear properties will be more easily extracted from low energy (50 MeV) pion scattering and, in the case of high momentum properties, from high energy (2 GeV) scattering. (18 refs).

Abstract

The gamma rays from the capture in Be9 of protons of energy between 0.27 and 1.2 Mev have been studied using large scintillation crystals. Excitation functions of the gamma rays leading to the 0-, 0.72-, 1.74-, 2.15-, 3.58-, and 5.16-Mev states of B10 were computed from the measured gamma-ray spectra. In addition to the resonances previously known to exist at 0.33-, 0.99-, and 1.086-Mev proton energy [corresponding to (1-) 6.88-, (2-) 7.48-, and (0+) 7.56-Mev states in B10], evidence was found only for the p-wave resonance near 1 Mev [(2+) 7.5-Mev state in B10] postulated by Mozer and by Dearnaly and for the influence of higher lying states. This work leaves unexplained the large isotopic-spin impurity of the 6.88-Mev level. Appreciable nonresonant capture was found for the transitions to the 0-, 0.72-, 3.58-, and 5.16-Mev states, which is probably not s-wave for the latter two transitions. Accurate energy measurements and coincidence work showed that the 5.16-Mev level of B10 is populated in preference to the 5.11-Mev level, contradicting earlier work of Clegg. Also, experimental evidence has been found which appears to be in contradiction to the 0+ spin assignment for the 7.56-Mev level of B10 and raises doubts about the 2+ spin assignment of the 5.16-Mev level.

Abstract

The first neutrino observations from the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory are presented from preliminary analyses. Based on energy, direction and location, the data in the region of interest appear to be dominated by 8B solar neutrinos, detected by the charged current reaction on deuterium and elastic scattering from electrons, with very little background. Measurements of radioactive backgrounds indicate that the measurement of all active neutrino types via the neutral current reaction on deuterium will be possible with small systematic uncertainties. Abstract

Over the past decade, the People's Republic of China has increasingly used its economic might as a means of influence to pursue grand strategic objectives that some scholars believe are aimed at countering U.S. presence and influence in the Asia-Pacific region. This thesis examines two aspects of Chinese economic strategy, foreign direct investment and development aid, in the context of the Philippines, which represents the primary U.S. foothold in the region. Using geospatial, link, and social network analysis techniques to examine a data set of Chinese investments in the Philippines from 2006 to 2016, this thesis attempts to answer the following question: What evidence does China's investment in the Philippines contribute to the understanding of China's grand strategic objectives? We find that these Chinese investments support and expand China's ability to monitor and control South China Sea access points, and provide interpersonal channels for Chinese influence over Philippine decision-making through the cultivation of allies within the economic arena. Abstract

The yeast DEAD-box protein Has1p is required for the maturation of 18S rRNA, the biogenesis of 40S r-subunits and for the processing of 27S pre-rRNAs during 60S r-subunit biogenesis. We purified recombinant Has1p and characterized its biochemical activities. We show that Has1p is an RNA-dependent ATPase in vitro and that it is able to unwind RNA/DNA duplexes in an ATP-dependent manner. We also report a mutational analysis of the conserved residues in motif I (86AKTGSGKT93), motif III (228SAT230) and motif VI (375HRVGRTARG383). The in vivo lethal K92A substitution in motif I abolishes ATPase activity in vitro. The mutations S228A and T230A partially dissociate ATPase and helicase activities, and they have cold-sensitive and lethal growth phenotypes, respectively. The H375E substitution in motif VI significantly decreased helicase but not ATPase activity and was lethal in vivo. These results suggest that both ATPase and unwinding activities are required in vivo. Has1p possesses a Walker A-like motif downstream of motif VI (383GTKGKGKS390). K389A substitution in this motif significantly increases the Has1p activity in vitro, which indicates it potentially plays a role as a negative regulator. Finally, rRNAs and poly(A) RNA serve as the best stimulators of the ATPase activity of Has1p among the tested RNAs

241. Ribozymes: the characteristics and properties of catalytic RNAs

Abstract

Ribozymes, or catalytic RNAs, were discovered a little more than 15 years ago. They are found in the organelles of plants and lower eukaryotes, in amphibians, in prokaryotes, in bacteriophages, and in viroids and satellite viruses that infect plants. An example is also known of a ribozyme in hepatitis delta virus, a serious human pathogen. Additional ribozymes are bound to be found in the future, and it is tempting to regard the RNA component(s) of various ribonucleoprotein complexes as the catalytic engine, while the proteins serve as mere scaffolding - an unheard-of notion 15 years ago! In nature, ribozymes are involved in the processing of RNA precursors. However, all the characterized ribozymes have been converted, with some clever engineering, into RNA enzymes that can cleave or modify targeted RNAs (or even DNAs) without becoming altered themselves. While their success in vitro is unquestioned, ribozymes are increasingly used in vivo as valuable tools for studying and regulating gene expression.
