209. Enhancing Light-Absorption and Luminescent Properties of Non-Emissive 1,3,4,6,9b-Pentaazaphenalene through Perturbation of Forbidden Electronic Transition by Boron Complexation

Abstract

We report an improvement of optical properties of the non‐emissive molecule through shuffling the molecular orbitals by boron complexation. The 1, 3, 4, 6, 9b‐pentaazaphenelene (5AP) derivative having a 2‐(dimesitylboryl)phenyl group was synthesized through a substitution reaction from a 2‐bromophenyl compound. The formation of the B−N dative bond was confirmed by ¹¹B{¹H} NMR spectroscopy and a single‐crystal X‐ray structure analysis. Most of the conventional 5AP derivatives hardly showed emission despite their planar and rigid molecular structures. The previous reports on 5AP derivatives ascribed the non‐luminescent behavior to the forbidden transition between frontier orbitals. On the other hand, the 5AP‐based boron complex in this work showed enhanced light absorption and luminescence from the HOMO−LUMO transition. Theoretical calculations suggested that the boron complexation should play a critical role in perturbing the forbidden character of the HOMO−LUMO transition. Because the nitrogen atom on the 5AP moiety formed the Lewis acid−base pair with the boron atom, the energy level of the HOMO of 5AP was downshifted. The character of the HOMO−LUMO transition of the boron complex was changed to afford the improved optical properties of the boron complex.

213. Tuning of Sensitivity in Thermochromic Luminescence by Regulating Molecular Rotation Based on Triphenylamine-Substituted o-Carboranes

Abstract

This study shows tuning of sensitivity in thermochromic luminescence from triphenylamine‐substituted o‐carboranes by regulating rotation barriers with a substituent effect. A series of o‐carborane dyads with various numbers of methyl substituents were prepared, and their optical properties were compared. Initially, significant dual‐emission properties consistent of the locally excited (LE) state and the induced charge transfer (ICT) state were observed from the solid samples of all dyads. In particular, diverse responses were obtained by cooling from the dyads. The pristine and mono‐substituted dyads presented thermally independent emission during temperature changes, whereas the detected thermochromic luminescence with drastic color change from red to blue originated from the alteration of intensity ratios between LE and CT emission bands. From mechanistic studies (experimental and theoretical), it was clearly shown that the difference in the rotation barrier of the o‐carborane unit caused by the substituent effect should play a key role in variable sensitivity in luminescent chromic behaviors in temperature change.

Abstract

This paper proposes a method for the movement of a snake robot on crowded pipes or one with large branches. The robot moves along a pipe by grasping it with its entire body instead of wrapping around it, and it adjusts its body shape to the target curve. The proposed robot contains a part that does not contact the pipe, allowing it to move in two directions: along or around the pipe axis. It avoids obstacles by combining these movements while making contact with itself to reduce joint torque and preserve body shape. Experiments demonstrated the efficacy of the proposed robotic snake motion by circumnavigating an obstacle on a pipe in several situations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Herein, we report the unique solid‐state excimer emission of three types of acridine‐tethered o‐carboranes with variable degrees of methylation at the o‐carborane unit. They all showed columnar packing structures based on dimer formation, and two types of π‐overlapping motifs were alternately stacked. From the photoluminescence (PL) measurements on the crystalline samples, it was found that three types of luminescence bands can simultaneously appear: monomer emission, excimer emission from the moderately π‐stacked intra‐dimer unit, and excimer emission from the widely π‐stacked inter‐dimer unit. Consequently, the PL colors were drastically changed by the steric effect of the methyl groups, with a strong correlation found between the π‐overlapping and excimer character. In addition, variable‐temperature PL measurements revealed that these PL species should be in thermal equilibrium at room temperature, with the intensity ratios sensitive toward temperature changes. 239. Mice Treated with an Antibiotic Cocktail Containing Metronidazole Show Attenuated Allergy Responses through the Induction of Regulatory T Cells in the Intestinal Mucosa

Abstract

This study sought to determine whether antibiotic treatments affect the pathogenesis of allergic diseases. We demonstrated that mice treated with a mixture of four antibiotic agents （ampicillin, neomycine, metronidazole, and vancomycin） showed significantly decreased antigen-specific IgE production compared to control mice, whereas mice treated with the same cocktail without metronidazole showed no change in IgE production compared to controls. Regulatory T cell suppression induced by particular antibody combinations is a possible mechanism of this effect, with an increased frequency of regulatory T cells also observed in the mesenteric lymph nodes （MLN） of mice treated with the mixture of four antibiotics, but not in the second cocktail without metronidazole. Our antibiotic treatments also dramatically decreased the diversity of mouse intestinal microbiota compared to control mice, based on 16SrRNA analysis of the cecum fecal composition. In conclusion, mice treated with antibiotic mixtures containing metronidazole, but not those treated without metronidazole, showed attenuated allergy responses and increased induction of regulatory T cells in the mucosa.

240. Time-Dependent Emission Enhancement of the Ethynylpyrene-o-Carborane Dyad and Its Application as a Luminescent Color Sensor for Evaluating Water Contents in Organic Solvents

Abstract

The time‐dependent emission enhancement (TDEE) phenomena of the 1‐(o‐carboran‐1‐yl)ethynylpyrene dyad were reported. It was found that the emission intensity from the dyad increased in tetrahydrofuran (THF), acetone and dichloromethane with increasing incubation time. From the mechanistic studies, it was suggested that agglomeration of the dyad gradually proceeded in these media, followed by expression of excimer luminescence. Additionally, it was shown that the rates of TDEE of the dyad were sensitively accelerated in the presence of a trace amount of water. Based on this fact, a detection system for water contents in acetone was constructed. Before and after incubation for 96 h at room temperature, time courses of changes in optical properties were monitored. Finally, water contents in acetone can be estimated by the degrees of TDEE and emission color changes in the range from 0.1 wt % to 2.0 wt % and from 2.0 wt % to 20 wt %, respectively.
