Abstract

The influence of the Al layer thickness on the critical current density Jc of transformation-processed \Nb3\Al superconductors was investigated. The Al layer thickness in the jerry-roll filaments of precursor wires was varied from 120 to 250 nm; the Nb layer thickness is proportional to the Al thickness, keeping the Nb–Al composition ratio to 3. The rapid heating and quenching (RHQ) operation condition was varied within a range of the conditions to form the ductile body-centered cubic (BCC) Nb–Al phase. The RHQ wires were also followed by an areal reduction process prior to the \Nb3\Al phase transformation. Thinner Al thickness wires show a steeper increase in Jc with reduction in the area, whereas thicker Al thickness wires show a slower increase. The best Jc performance was obtained for the thinnest Al thickness sample. Without areal reduction, there was not much difference in the optimum Jc with respect to the Al thickness. 247. Contact resistance and compressive deformation of strands in cable-in-conduit conductors.

Abstract

Contact resistance on surfaces of strands is one of important parameters for characterizing stability of cable-in-conduit conductors. Redistribution of strand currents after occurring a local-normal segment in a strand and AC losses due to inter-strand coupling currents strongly depend on the contact resistance between strands in the multi-stranded conductors. Applying compressive force to a cross segment of the stacked strands, we have measured the contact resistance between the strands at three temperatures. We have prepared two kinds of strands for this experiment. The experimental results showed that the contact resistance strongly decreased with increasing of the contact force to the strands. Furthermore, we quantitatively estimated surface resistance based on the contact resistance and the deformation of the strands. When the strands were made of copper, the range of the estimated surface resistance was between 2×10[sup -10] and 8×10[sup -10] Ωm² at the liquid helium temperature. In case that we used the superconducting strands, the surface resistance was 1-2×l0[sup -10] Ωm² at the same temperature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

248. Relation of slip characteristics and contact stress of strands in CIC conductors.

Abstract

Frictional disturbance due to abrupt strand motion is one of main causes of instability of cable-in-conduit (CIC) conductors. The strands in the CIC conductors are pressed against a conduit by electromagnetic force, and frictional slip occurs at contact points between the strands and the conduit. To estimate stability of the strands, we have tested the relation of the frictional slips and contact stresses. The combination of specimen materials is copper and stainless steel, which simulate the contact configuration of a non-insulated strand with copper matrix and the conduit in the CIC conductor. In the slip tests, many micro-slips whose slip length are several tens of microns were observed. The relation between the length, the contact stress, and frictional energy is discussed. Abstract

Numerical studies on characteristics of electromagnetic behaviors of co-axial multi-layer superconducting cable conductors with superconducting magnetic shields were performed. The inter-layer current distribution and AC loss dependencies on the twist pitches and the diameter of the superconducting layers of the cables were investigated. The numerical results showed that the magnetic field produced by the shielding currents flowing in the superconducting magnetic shield strongly affected the current distribution and the AC losses of the cable. Based on the model, the optimized cable structures for uniform current distribution and to reduce the AC losses were studied. Examples of the optimized structures obtained by our model were presented and compared with those obtained by the conventional electrical circuit model.
