- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract
Like many universities, Kyoto University has a tutor system in which current students assist international students in their studies and daily lives. Prior research has shown that tutor programs are educationally beneficial, not only for international students but also for their tutors, and this certainly seems to be true at Kyoto University. On the other hand, there have been times when Kyoto University's tutor system has not been functioning as well as it might. To address this issue, this paper focuses on clarifying the status and problems of the tutoring system for international students at Kyoto University, especially in the Kyoto iUP undergraduate program, through a questionnaire survey of both Kyoto iUP students and tutors. Based on the results of the questionnaire survey and an examination of the initiatives implemented in fiscal 2022, this paper also explores the future possibilities for Kyoto University's tutor system.

- Abstract
This work analyses the reinforcement of the dual nature of the new vocational training (VT), based on Organic Act No. 3/2022 and its development regulations, approved by Royal Decree No. 659/2023. This dual nature translates into greater co-responsibility of the company, together with the educational centre, in the training of the apprentice. Thus, the participation of all types of business entities in the VT system is now enhanced, which is achieved with various measures, such as the expansion of the concept of company, through the equalization of different assimilated organizations to it; the promotion of measures to help the involvement of SMEs and micro-enterprises or attention to the company’s training personnel, such as tutors or experts from the company. Without a doubt, they are measures that can contribute to giving a positive and definitive boost to the VT system.

At present, the great advances of new technologies have allowed a great improvement in monitoring control in different sectors. These new functionalities will focus on all aspects related to the management of those practices (Rotations) to which the residents of a hospital may belong, during their period of completion of the MIR, and which, subsequently, will pass to the evaluation process by of their tutors, a process that has already been carried out in part 2 of the application. During this process, the residents will carry out their Rotations, assigned by a Commission, where they will have a general tutor and one or more rotation tutors, and they will have to show their results by adding evidence to those rotations to which they have been assigned.

Background and Aim: Medical students are required to complete a number of clinical rotations in hospital departments, affiliated with the Azrieli Faculty of Medicine, under the supervision of a department tutor. Our experience shows that departments receiving good scores typically also receive good feedback for their tutor. Accordingly, our aim was to assess the tutor contribution to students’ overall satisfaction from clinical rotations in hospital departments across northern Israel. Methods: Here, we recorded the students’ reported satisfaction with tutors as well as the satisfaction with clinical rotations in different departments of Galilee Medical Center (GMC) in Naharia, and Baruch Padeh Medical Center in Poria. The students’ reported satisfaction was assessed numerically and verbally using questionnaires over a period of three years. Results: We find that the students reported satisfaction with a clinical rotation is positively and significantly correlated with the student satisfaction with the tutor, and less with other factors such as hospital organization and department facilities, geographical distance from home, working hours, etc. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that medical schools can increase students’ satisfaction through investment in good tutors.

There are a lot of significant structural changes in almost all higher educational institutions in Ukraine due to time requirements. Accession to a single European space, new educational standards requires the revision and expansion of the content of pedagogical activities, functions and roles implemented by educators. Students are granted the rights and opportunities for the most complete satisfaction of individual educational requests. There was a need to review the ideas about the content of teaching activities and the emergence of new positions. In recent years, scientists have been actively discussing the introduction the position of the tutor in the education system. The term «tutor» came to us from classical universities in Great Britain and extended the notion of «teacher». Tutors became widespread, especially in the context of the gradual integration of Ukraine into the European educational space. Tutor is a historically established special pedagogical position that provides the development of individual educational programs, the potential of each student and prepares him for a changing life. Tutor controls not only student’s study, but also his behavior, way of life, attending classes, rest, appearance, etc. Tutor while working with student transmits a variety of techniques and rules for mastering new knowledge. However, learning is impossible without the use of ICT. Therefore, it is not enough for tutor to use only traditional technologies of education and upbringing. After all, without the use of computer it is difficult to satisfy the individual requests of each student. So tutors need to know the possibilities of the Internet navigate the pedagogical network communities, use innovative pedagogical technologies to increase the students’ interest in learning and activating their cognitive activity. Indeed, nowadays it is difficult to imagine a learning process without the use of modern technology. Thus, information and communication technologies should become reliable assistants of the tutor to the new conditions of life and professional activity in the information society. Application of information and communication technologies in tutoring practices is considered as an innovative approach in building the process of training and preparing students for professional activities. This is due to the fact that the computerization and application of modern information and communication technologies is an opportunity that will help to create a new system of education. Information and communication technology at the university is not a trend, but a modern necessity. They must become an integral part of the educational process. Therefore, the modern tutor must be able to work with new means of education, at least in order to ensure one of the most important rights of the student − the right in qualitative education. Consequently, in the process of tutor’s support various information and communication technologies can be used to maximize the optimization of tutor activity.

Conflicts are inherent to human relations and should not be ignored; however, they are a lesser component in e-learning discussion. The role of the tutor and the importance of affectivity in conflict mediation in a course offered to Military Police sergeants of a Brazilian state were studied. The perceptions of seven tutors and sixty-four students were collected in a questionnaire prepared with Google Forms. For those subjected to it, conflicts in the virtual learning environment were not common, probably due to the fact that the interactions between students and tutors were considered respectful and friendly. Nevertheless, they expressed their views on which actions were expected in the event of a conflict. In the event of a conflict between students, the tutor should act as a mediator, in an impartial, friendly and firm manner; in a student‑and‑tutor event, one should seek conciliation and consensus through dialogue, although the placement of a temporary mediator was considered unnecessary. Both tutors and students felt that affectivity would help reduce or mediate conflicts. In the understanding of the students, keeping relations based on ethics and on mutual acceptance and respect would mitigate conflicts between colleagues. Friendliness was chosen as the most important social-affective competence a tutor should rely on in conflict mediation.

The development of academic writing competence is an institutional responsibility of universities. To achieve this goal, most prestigious North American and European universities established writing centers where tutors, who have excellent academic writing skills and have been specially trained, help their fellow students improve their writing assignments. However, writing centers in Russian universities have proved to be true laboratories for scholarly communications as tasks they have to solve are conceptually different from those of overseas universities and the aims they attempt to reach are by far more challenging. One of such aims is to provide university researchers with expert help in order to develop their professional competencies so that they could significantly improve their publication outcomes and, as a consequence, succeed in the global academic community.

The facilitation of learning by tutors is a worldwide phenomenon that is supported by most open and distance learning (ODL) institutions. It is a strategy employed to achieve academic success. This qualitative intrinsic case study explored the views of tutors at the University of South Africa (Unisa) about the implementation of the Integrated Tutor Model (ITM) which supports student learning. The successes, challenges and impact of the ITM on the tutors’ delivery of tutorials are not fully known. Therefore, the findings of this study will highlight the successes, challenges and impact of the ITM which Unisa can use to improve the model. Data were gathered through face-to-face interviews with six tutors who were purposively selected from Unisa’s Gauteng region. The findings revealed successes and challenges of the ITM that affect the support that is due to the students via tutorage. These findings explain the application of the ITM that can assist Unisa in strengthening or reviewing both the tutor system and the model.

Introduction: Group discussions have the potential to contribute positively to the learning process in Problem-based learning (PBL) but can be challenging for newcomers. Aim: To explore factors which influenced group discussions in PBL, among a group of international students pursuing an undergraduate medical program at International Track in Medicine, Maastricht University, The Netherlands. Materials and Methods: Semi-structured in-depth individual interviews were conducted with students (n=11) and tutors (n=4). The interview data were subjected to thematic analysis. Following the initial coding, the codes were analysed for patterns and similar or related codes were put under a category. Thereafter, these categories were clustered into common themes and interpreted. Results: Factors such as international diversity in PBL groups, tutors’ friendly approach and subject expertise, and a curriculum with sufficient self-study time, were found as facilitating factors for discussion. Both dominant and silent behaviour of students, as well as some cultural factors were found to hinder discussions. Three recommendations in terms of providing adequate training to tutors, sensitising students regarding cultural values and providing avenues for socialisation emerged from the study. Conclusion: This study provided evidence that international diversity is a positive factor for group discussions. It also added to the existing body of PBL research that cultural and contextual factors influenced group discussions in PBL sessions. Cultural factors were found to have less positive impact on year 1 students from some countries. However, students from these countries were able to overcome their cultural barriers due to the beneficial effects of the diverse nature of PBL groups, and were found to be active participants in second year.

Purpose This study was conducted to identify suggestions for improving the effectiveness and promoting the success of the current problem-based learning (PBL) program at the Catholic University of Korea College of Medicine through a professor and student awareness survey. Methods A survey was carried out by sending out mobile Naver Form survey pages via text messages 3 times in December 2018, to 44 medical students and 74 professors. In addition, relevant official documents from the school administration were reviewed. The collected data were analyzed to identify the achievement of educational goals, overall satisfaction with, and operational suitability of the PBL program. Results The overall satisfaction scores for the PBL program were neutral (students, 3.27±0.95 vs. professors, 3.58±1.07; P=0.118). Regarding the achievement of educational goals, the integration of basic and clinical medicine and encouragement of learning motivation were ranked lowest. Many respondents expressed negative opinions about the modules (students, 25.0%; professors, 39.2%) and tutors (students, 54.5%; professors, 24.3%). The students and professors agreed that the offering timing of the program in medical school and the length of each phase were suitable, while opinions expressed in greater detail pointed to issues such as the classes being held too close to exams and their alignment with regular course units. Conclusion Issues with modules and tutors were the most pressing. Detailed and appropriate modules should be developed on the basis of advice from professors with experience in PBL tutoring. Inconsistencies in tutoring should be reduced by standardization and retraining.

Although the potential of asynchronous discussion to support learning is widely recognized, student engagement remains problematic. Often, for example, students simply refuse to participate. Consequently the rich promise of asynchronous learning networks for supporting students’ learning can prove hard to achieve. After reviewing strategies for encouraging student participation in discussions in Asynchronous Learning Networks (ALN), we present a study that investigates how these strategies influenced students’ perceptions and use of the discussion area. We identify and explore factors that encouraged and inhibited student participation in asynchronous discussion, and evaluate student postings to an asynchronous discussion group by content analysis. The results question received wisdom about some of the pedagogic techniques advocated in the literature. Instead, results support the view that the major factors for stimulating student participation in asynchronous discussion are tutor enthusiasm and expertise. It appears that the tutor may be the root cause of engagement in discussions, an important conclusion, given that to date, the tutor’s role has remained relatively unexamined. We also note that participation in asynchronous discussion is inhibited when students allocate a low priority to participation, as may occur when participation is not assessed. Content analysis of an asynchronous discussion in this study reveals that contributions were not strongly interactive and that students were simply ‘playing the game’ of assessment, making postings that earned marks but rarely contributing otherwise. Thus the use of assessment to encourage students’ contributions appears to be only a superficial success; it seems likely that giving credit for postings changes behavior without necessarily improving learning. This finding has significant implications for curriculum design.

The present contribution wants to start a reflection on the evolution of the professional educator role given the recent normative interventions and some new circles of intervention. Starting from a synthesis of research about the courses that in Italy are proposed today for the formation of tutor learning, the following job proposes a pedagogic reading of this new profile. It appears a well-defined frame of functions that however needs a more suitable definition in terms of formation and professional identity, not always so anchored to educational knowledges and postures.

The objective of this study was to examine the effect of peer tutoring on college students' academic achievement and, as well, their competencies in communication and collaboration. In particular, we investigated whether or not the effect of peer tutoring depends on the role taken in peer tutoring. 373 Korean college students attending peer tutoring participated in this study. A pre-post design employing a self-report questionnaire was used. The results indicated that peer tutoring improved both academic achievement and communicative and collaborative skills. The findings also suggested that the effect of peer-tutoring on academic achievement and responsibility for teamwork was valid only with regard to those in the role of tutees. The implications of this study are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
