The radical deviance of the tattooist and their canvas, read through queer forms of pathologized identities, illuminates what happens when this primitive whiteness is indeed queer. The move to a digital environment, where consumers may utilise, process, store, and transfer their data, has occurred in recent years. Furthermore, the quick and ongoing evolution of the Internet of Things (IoT) has resulted in a massive increase in the utilisation of digital signals and images. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a huge and varied network of connected devices, everyday objects, and gadgets that can communicate with one another over the Internet. The Internet of Things has a lot of potential to become a part of everyday life and improve people's lives. In recent decades, digital tattooing has been offered as a great way to handle numerous elements of IoT security. This technology works by embedding a digital signal called a digital tattoo into another digital signal called a host signal, which can be text, image, audio, or video. The principle of this approach is to detect changed pixels using the Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) code. The CRC is a data integrity check that is both powerful and simple to use. It is the most used method of mistake detection in telecommunications. For these reasons, it has been used in the context of the fragile tattoo to determine whether or not the picture has been altered. The experimental results show that the proposed schemes perform well in contrast to the existing scheme and use traditional evaluation criteria, proving that the new scheme is distinctive. This paper proposed a novel ultrasonic vibration-assisted femtosecond laser polishing method for C/SiC composites. The effect of near-field convection enhancement of ultrasonic vibration can improve the cooling of ablated particles and reduce their tendency of bonding to the material surface, reducing surface oxidation and improving the machined surface quality, removal depth and material removal rate. Through optimizing defocusing distance and scanning speed, a specific relationship between ultrasonic amplitude, pulse energy density, and spot overlap rate was established, obtaining a smooth and flat surface without defects. The residual stress of carbon fibers was investigated, and found that the coupling effect of ultrasonic energy and laser energy fields can enhance the residual compressive stress of carbon fibers. The formation of typical features of fiber fracture and pulling-out, banded pits, voids and deposition, was explained. This paper proposes new research ideas for better understanding of the removal mechanism of C/SiC composites using ultrasonic vibration-assisted femtosecond laser. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Digital remediation increasingly plays a pivotal role in delivering political messages. This study examines postings of corporeally mediated tattoos in a China-based blog, focusing on in what sense blogs can provide a breathing or even emancipating space for Chinese tattoo wearers and enthusiasts to control the viewer's perceptions of tattooing and negotiate long-standing stigmatized associations of tattoos there. The study analyzes 305 postings collected from the blog covering a period between 24 April 2020 and 3 May 2021, taking a quantitative approach. Methodologically, it first analyses the distribution of the signs across body parts as displayed. By applying multimodal perspectives, this study also investigates photographic techniques such as distance, angle, gaze, and modality harnessed and exploited for visual manipulation during digital remediation of turning body narratives into digital narratives. Findings of the study suggest that digital remediation facilitates personal expression of tattoo wearers and photographic techniques play a critical role in introducing ready alignment of the viewer with the postings. The study thus adds quantitative inquiries to existing, mostly qualitative, studies of tattoos which usually rest on interviews with tattoo wearers, enthusiasts, and artists for an account of tattoo narratives in connection to personal expression and self-definition. Its findings would be inspiring to socially stigmatized and marginalized groups to circumvent social, cultural, and political barriers to communicate and make their stories heard to more people. Background: Patients with capillary malformations (CMs) may undergo medical tattooing (MT) as an alternative to laser therapy. But little is known about treatment results and impact from the patients' perspective. Objectives: In this cross-sectional digital survey study, we evaluated the patient-reported outcomes of MT for CMs. Methods: MT practices were identified via the Dutch Association of Skin Therapists and Google. These practices invited all their CM patients who had undergone MT between January 2011 and September 2021 to participate. Baseline and treatment characteristics, tattooing effectiveness, patient satisfaction with treatment outcomes, and complications were evaluated using a custom-made online survey. Quality of life was assessed with the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) questionnaire. Factors associated with treatment effectiveness and patient satisfaction were identified via bivariate analysis and ordinal logistic regression analysis. Results: Most of the 89 respondents were female (69%). Almost all CMs were located on the face (90%) and mainly (dark) red (74%). Nearly all patients had undergone laser therapy (91%). Median number of tattooing sessions was 5 (IQR: 4.0–8.0). Thirty-seven percent of the patients perceived >75% color reduction. Younger patients were more likely to obtain lower treatment effectiveness (OR 0.44, 95% CI: 0.20–0.97). Most patients (83%) were satisfied with treatment results. Patients with lighter (OR 0.30, 95% CI: 0.13–0.72), non-facial (OR 0.15, 95% CI: 0.03–0.89), and hypertrophic CMs (OR 0.30, 95% CI: 0.11–0.82) were less likely to be satisfied with treatment outcomes. Patients with lighter skin types were more satisfied (OR 2.89, 95% CI: 1.23–6.80). Complications included transient pain (23%), bleeding (3.4%), hypertrophic scarring (1.1%), hypopigmentation (1.1%), and a halo around the tattoo (1.1%). Conclusion: MT seems a valid alternative treatment in addition to laser therapy for CMs, with mild complications. Most patients are (very) satisfied with treatment results, while color reduction is incomplete. Hence, it seems appropriate to decide together with patients whether or not to use MT as primary treatment or secondary to laser therapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This qualitative study aimed at exploring the life experiences represented by tattoos and scars of adolescent males in conflict with the law. The adolescent participants were detained in restrictive placement at what was then called Special Youth Centres. A case study design guided the research, which was conducted in 2010/2011. Fifteen unstructured interviews were conducted with five participants. Body maps were used as visual data-collection strategy. Three themes were identified from the transcripts. First, the contextual factors that characterised the living situations of participants. Second, narratives of pain and suffering were linked to the scars indicated on body maps. Most scars could be linked to domestic violence, physical abuse, harsh parenting practices, and gang involvement. The third theme outlined the link between tattoos and gangs. Participants expressed the negative consequences of such tattoos and described how emotions triggered them to get new tattoos. Two conclusions can be drawn: families should offer a safe haven to children, but often do not; while gangs offer protection, identity and access to commodities, with negative short- and long-term consequences. Conformable electronics has emerged in recent years as an innovative research field and the ability of conformable devices to monitor human physiological signals has been extensively explored. Therefore, in this study, the possibility of using conformable electronics as active devices capable of providing stimuli to the human body is investigated. In particular, a new approach is proposed to elicit tactile sensations on human skin using an operating principle based on the generation of localized heat in correspondence with a closed volume of air. This latter consequently expands causing the deformation of a thin membrane. The use of fast prototyping fabrication techniques, i.e., inkjet printing, and commercially available materials, i.e., transfer tattoo paper, allow the device to be produced quickly and easily transferred on the target substrate. Despite the ultrathin thickness (few micrometers), it is possible to observe forces and displacements thanks to localized heating at very low working powers (<300 mW). A pilot test on a voluntary subject demonstrates how it is possible to discriminate the tactile sensation elicited by the active tattoo device. While the working principle on a single taxel is demonstrated, these results show the potential of the new approach for developing wearable tactile displays. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ultrathin, breathable, and skin‐compatible epidermal electronics are attractive for wearable and implantable healthcare and biomedical applications. However, materializing and integrating all electronic components on ultrathin platforms is still challenging. Here, a charge‐storing electronic tattoo (E‐tattoo) device with ultrathin, breathable, and skin‐compatible properties is reported. Silk protein nanofibers (SNFs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) form the top and bottom electrodes that sandwich the intermediate dielectric layer fabricated using poly(vinyl alcohol) nanofibers. The E‐tattoo capacitors on the deformed skin, show excellent mechanical and electrical stability, and 60 µm‐thick capacitors exhibit frequency‐dependent capacitances (up to 350 pF at 5 kHz) and capability for memory operation. Mechanical bending induces capacitance change, which increases as the bending radius is decreased, indicating mechanical sensing capability of the E‐tattoo. SNF/CNT‐based triboelectric nanogenerator E‐tattoos can be connected to the capacitor E‐tattoo, and the charges generated by multiple bare‐finger touches can be stored in the capacitor (0.23 V for 200 touches). Due to the micro/nanopores in the NF networks, the device exhibits a water vapor transmission rate of 115.04 g m−2 d−1, which is better than that of a commercial band‐aid, as well as ethanol sensing capability. Tattoos are important markers of tribal cultural identity. As embodied texts, they not only reflect a worldview but also become repositories of historical and ontological memory. As carriers of traditions, customs, and beliefs, they manifest the collective identity of the people and guide and bind them as a community. As such, tattooing or godna acquires a much wider significance than being a mere bodily art. It turns into an aesthetic-narrative entry point into tribal consciousness, cultural worldview, identity and history. In their engagement with their identity, the tribal writers dig deep into their cultural repository to foreground the truth of their being and becoming. In the present paper, an attempt is made to understand the nature of this tribal negotiation of 'tattooing' as a textual metaphorical tradition through a critical study of Sirawon Tulisen Khating's "Retold by Grandma-Yarla's Tattoos" and Nidhi Dugar Kundalia's "The Godna Artists of Jharkhand". The paper uses the insights from Raymond Williams's cultural theory to deconstruct and critically analyse the tribal practice of tattooing and its relational dynamics within the tribal society. Using memory as a trope and the concept of collective theory as a theoretical framework, the paper sets out to see how gender and caste/class notions are upheld during the tattooing process. Looking through the tattoo as a significant cultural practice in the tribal world, the paper also exposes the diverse class and caste hierarchies prevalent among tribals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To improve awareness of delayed onset uveitis in patients with a history of intraocular tattoo ink injection.Results: A 47-year-old man underwent a scleral tattoo procedure during which there was inadvertent intraocular injection of tattoo ink into his right eye. He subsequently developed endophthalmitis, retinal detachment, and retinal necrosis. He was treated with intravitreal and oral antibiotics and underwent vitreoretinal surgical intervention. A vitreous specimen was obtained and demonstrated significantly elevated levels of several heavy metals. One month later, he developed an acute granulomatous anterior uveitis in the same eye that was managed with a combination of topical and perioperative intravitreal, intravenous, and oral corticosteroids.Conclusion: This case highlights the importance of monitoring patients with a history of intraocular tattoo ink injection for delayed onset uveitis in addition to retinal toxicity.

Purpose Harvesting at least 12 lymph nodes (LNs) is recommended for adequate tumor staging in colon surgery. Although preoperative endoscopic tattooing has been used for primary localization of tumors, its impact on LN retrieval in colorectal surgery remains controversial. We aimed to investigate the relationship between preoperative tattooing and LN retrieval after laparoscopic rectal resection. Methods We reviewed the records of 92 patients with rectal cancer who underwent laparoscopic resection from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2019. Patients were categorized into 2 groups according to whether preoperative endoscopic tattooing was performed. The rate of adequate LN retrieval (≥12) was compared. Results The tattooed and non-tattooed groups comprised 49 and 43 patients, respectively. In the tattooed and non-tattooed groups, the rates of adequate LN retrieval were 75.5% and 55.8%, respectively (P=0.046). Univariate analysis revealed that female sex, tattooing, LN metastasis status, pathological pathological stage (p-stage), and LN dissection were predictive factors for adequate LN retrieval. In the multivariate analysis, female sex (odds ratio [OR], 3.34; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.15–9.73; P=0.027), tattooing (OR, 2.87; 95% CI, 1.03–7.94; P=0.043), and p-stage (OR, 3.34; 95% CI, 1.04–10.75; P=0.043) were independent predictive factors for adequate LN retrieval after surgery. Conclusion This study revealed that preoperative endoscopic tattooing was statistically significantly associated with adequate LN retrieval in patients with rectal cancer who underwent laparoscopic rectal resection. Preoperative endoscopic tattooing should be considered to improve disease assessment and avoid stage migration.

The use of medical tattoos in radiation therapy (RT) is traditional practice to ensure daily treatment setup and positioning accuracy. Past studies have shown the negative psychosocial impact of tattoos on patients with breast cancer. However, in the current era of tattoo culture where it is also viewed as body art and self-expression, we examined patient and provider perceptions of medical tattooing in breast cancer RT. Consecutive English-speaking patients undergoing whole breast RT using tattoos were asked to complete surveys after CT simulation (S1) and 2 weeks post-treatment completion (S2). S1 included social/demographic questions, and questions pertaining to stress, pain, anxiety, tattoo visibility, and satisfaction with RT tattoos (0 none-10 highest). S2 included similar visibility and satisfaction questions, the patient's perceptions on tattoos, and their preference for alternative non-permanent marks. Provider surveys assessed CT simulation radiation therapists (CT-RTT) and treatment therapists (Tx-RTT) satisfaction and perceptions on tattoos. All surveys allowed free text comments about tattoos. Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis were performed. From Nov 2023 - Mar 2024, 32 patients were approached, 30 completed S1 (94%) and 24 (75%) completed both. Median age was 60 years (range = 39-82). During tattooing, patients commonly experienced pain (66%), stress (41%) and anxiety (34%). At pre-RT, 38% of respondents focused on getting through treatment and perceived tattoos as necessary for accurate RT. Tattoos were small and insignificant to 33% of patients. Post-RT, 13% saw tattoos as reminders of cancer. Those with adverse cosmesis from surgery or baseline freckles/brown spots (29%) felt less bothered by tattoos. While patients were satisfied with tattoos (median 9; IQR =8-10), if given alternative non-permanent options, only one patient (with existing body art) "definitively" would choose tattoos, and 25% felt tattoos were imposed on them with no alternative option presented. One patient with body art saw medical tattoos as a need for RT, not their choice, "I have tattoos, but those tattoos are my choice". All Tx-RTTs (n = 25) felt satisfied using tattoos for setup, but 8% noted difficulty distinguishing them on freckled skin. 94% (30/32) of CT-RTT responses indicate satisfaction with the tattooing process; 6% disliked needles and did not enjoy tattooing patients. Patients treated with breast RT perceived tattoos as a necessity for accurate daily setup, but most would prefer non-permanent options if given a choice. Medical tattoos should not be presumed acceptable in patients with existing body art. Providers were generally satisfied with tattoos for treatment. Work is ongoing to explore alternative non-permanent marks to facilitate shared decision-making in marking options used for RT treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
