We have investigated early programming of body mass in order to understand the multifactorial etiology of obesity. Considering that the renin-angiotensin system is expressed and functional in the white adipose tissue (WAT) and modulates its development, we reasoned whether early transitory inhibition of angiotensin-I converting enzyme activity after birth could modify late body mass development. Therefore, newborn Wistar rats were treated with enalapril (10 mg/kg of body mass) or saline, starting at the first day of life until the age of 16 days. Between days 90th and 180th, a group of these animals received high fat diet (HFD). Molecular, biochemical, histological and physiological data were collected. Enalapril treated animals presented hyperphagia, overweight and increased serum level of triglycerides, total cholesterol and leptin, in adult life. Body composition analyses revealed higher fat mass with increased adipocyte size in these animals. Molecular analyses revealed that enalapril treatment increases neuropeptide Y (NPY) and cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) gene expression in hypothalamus, fatty acid synthase (FAS) and hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) gene expression in retroperitoneal WAT and decreases peroxixome proliferators-activated receptor (PPAR) γ, PPARα, uncoupling protein (UCP) 2 and UCP3 gene expression in WAT. The results of the current study indicate that enalapril administration during early postnatal development increases body mass, adiposity and serum lipids in adulthood associated with enhanced food intake and decreased metabolic activity in WAT, predisposing to obesity in adulthood.

For the purpose of studying the predisposition factors in patients in the acquisition of Candida albicans in the urinary tract, retrospective research was undertaken in the University Hospital in Maracaibo from 1999-2001. For such a purpose a sample of 53 patients was taken: 28 showing the presence of Candida albicans (Ca+) and 25 that did not show it (control), with an average overall age of 42. The variables studied were sex, time of hospitalization (TH), permanence in an intensive care unit –UCI- (IU), use of bladder catheter (SV), bladder catheter usage time (TCSV), use of antibiotics (UA), duration of the use of antibiotics (TUAB) and number of antibiotics used (NAB). The data was registered in a questionnaire type instrument. The statistical analyses of the results showed that in Ca+ patients, the variables: TH, TCSV, TUAB, NAB, IU and female (sex), were more frequent than the averages of each one of these variables in the Ca- group. The discriminative analysis for the same variables allowed for the establishment of statistically significant relation with variables TCSV, TUAB and NAB; although the last variable did not have any influence in the model when the discriminative equation was analyzed. The Ji-Square test indicated that there was dependence for the feminine sex, TCSV was greater at 10 days, NAB was greater or equal to 2, TUAB was greater at 14 days. Early removal of the bladder catheter and the adequate use of antibiotics during hospitalization, are practices that help to prevent the acquisition of C. albicans in hospitalized patients.

There are no test standarizaded for the antifungal susceptibility of dermatophytes. The aim of this study is to probe the well diffusion technique as antifungal susceptibility test for dermatophites. One hundred species of dermatophytes were isolated and identified (74 Trichophyton rubrum, 18 Trichophyton mentagrophytes, 1 Trichophyton tonsurans, 5 Microsporum canis and 2 Epidermophyton floccosum).in the Medical Micology Departament of TMI. The antifungal sensitivity of the isolates of the dermatophytes to the drugs was carried out using the well diffusion technique. The antifungal agents tested were griseofulvin, terbinafine, itraconazole and fluconazole. Results were interpreted according to NCCLS breakpoints. The inoculum suspension was standardized by weight measurement. Agar Staib was considered the most suitable, because 97% of the isolates grew on it. This is the first time the inoculum suspension of dermatophytes is standardized by weight measurement. Terbinafine was found to be the most effective drug, followed by Griseofulvin and Itraconazole. Fluconazole were not found to be effective.

In this work, the Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd methods were applied to fine-grained sedimentary rock samples of the Santa Maria Formation (Triassic, Paraná Basin) in order to have provenance informations. The Sm-Nd, although being considered as a new technique when applied to sedimentary rocks is an important parameter to the determination of potentials source rocks. The acquired informations with the Sm-Nd method and the integration with Rb-Sr data allowed to propose the reconstruction of the source areas concerning Santa Maria Formation. The results are fundamental to improve these methodologies when applied in sedimentary rocks.Los métodos radiométricos (Rb-Sr e Sm-Nd) han sido aplicados en rocas sedimentarias objetivando la obtención de informaciones sobre origen. El método Sm-Nd, a pesar de ser una técnica relativamente nueva en la aplicación a rocas sedimentarias, se ha tornado una herramienta fundamental en el auxilio a la determinación de origen. En este trabajo, fueron aplicados los métodos radiométricos Rb-Sr y Sm-Nd en muestras de rocas sedimentarias de la Formación Santa Maria (Triásico de la Cuenca del Paraná). Las informaciones obtenidas con el método Sm-Nd y, por veces, integradas con as de la metodología Rb-Sr permitieron la presunción y reconstrucción de las áreas de origen. Estes resultados son fundamentales para el aperfeccionamiento de estas metodologías cuando aplicadas a rocas sedimentarias.Os métodos radiométricos (Rb-Sr e Sm-Nd) têm sido aplicados em rochas sedimentares visando a obtenção de informações sobre proveniência. We analyzed retrospectively the neuroimaging exams of children with a confirmed diagnosis of dyslexia and correlated our findings with the evaluation of higher cortical functions. We studied 34 medical files of patients of the Ambulatory of Neuro-difficulties in Learning, FCM/UNICAMP. All of them had been sent to the ambulatory with primary or secondary complaints of difficulties at school and were submitted to neuropsychological evaluation and imaging exam (SPECT). From the children evaluated 58.8% had exams presenting dysfunction with 47% presenting hypoperfusion in the temporal lobe. As for the higher cortical functions, the most affected abilities were reading, writing and memory. There was significance between the hypoperfused areas and the variables schooling, reading, writing, memory and mathematic reasoning. The SPECTs showed hypoperfusion in areas involved in the reading and writing processes. Both are equivalent in terms of involved functional areas and are similar in children with or without specific dysfunctions in neuroimaging.Analisamos retrospectivamente exames de neuroimagem de crianças com diagnóstico de dislexia e correlacionamos os achados com avaliação das funções corticais superiores. Estudamos 34 prontuários de pacientes atendidos no Ambulatório de Neuro-Dificuldades de Aprendizado, FCM/UNICAMP, no período de 1994 a 2002. Todas foram encaminhadas com queixa primária ou secundária de dificuldade escolar e submetidas à avaliação neuropsicológica e exame de imagem (SPECT). Das crianças avaliadas, 58,8% apresentaram exames alterados. Dentre as alterações, 16 possuíam hipoperfusão no lobo temporal. Nas funções corticais superiores, as habilidades mais prejudicadas foram leitura, escrita e memória. Houve significância entre as áreas hipoperfundidas com a variável escolaridade, leitura, escrita, memória e raciocínio matemático. Os SPECTs mostraram hipoperfusão em áreas envolvidas nos processos de leitura/escrita. Ambos se equivalem em termos de áreas funcionais e são semelhantes nas crianças com e sem alterações específicas à neuroimagem.

This study evaluated, by morphologic and morphometric analyses, the cleaning of apical third of root canals instrumented with nickel-titanium rotary files using different irrigating solutions. Twenty-seven single-rooted mandibular premolars were assigned to three groups (n=9), according to the irrigating solution used: Group I, distilled and deionized water; Group II, 1% NaOCl; and Group III, 3.3% Ricinus communis detergent. Biomechanical preparation was performed with Protaper Plusâ nickel-titanium files as follows: S1, SX and S2 at the cervical and middle thirds, and 25/02, 25/04, 25/06, 30/02, 30/04 and 30/06 to complete the instrumentation, operating at 1 mm from the root apex. Irrigation was done at each file change with 2 mL of irrigating solution, totalizing 20 mL for each tooth. After biomechanical preparation, the apical thirds were serially sectioned and histologically processed. The cross-sections were examined by an optical microscope (X40) connected to a computer. The images were captured and analyzed using a computer software and submitted to morphometric analysis with aid of a grid. The percentage of debris remaining at the apical third was calculated. Data were submitted to statistical analysis by ANOVA and Tukey test. The results showed no statistically significant difference (p>0.01) between the groups irrigated with 1% NaOCl and 3.3% Ricinus communis detergent, which presented the lowest percentage of debris at the apical third, 8.49% and 10.11%, respectively. The group irrigated with distilled and deionized water had the highest percentage of debris (15.58%) and was statistically different from the other groups (pEstudou-se, por meio de análise morfológica e morfométrica, a capacidade de limpeza promovida pela instrumentação rotatória com limas Ni-Ti e irrigação com diferentes soluções. O preparo biomecânico foi realizado com sistema rotatório de Ni-Ti Protaper Plus, obedecendo a seguinte ordem de uso dos instrumentos: S1, SX e S2 para o terço cervical e médio, seguida do 25/02, 25/04, 25/06, 30/02, 30/04 e 35/02, completando a instrumentação todos operando 1 mm aquém do ápice. A irrigação foi realizada a cada troca de instrumento com 2 mL de solução irrigante, totalizando um volume de 20 mL para cada dente. Após o preparo biomecânico, os terços apicais dos dentes foram submetidos ao processamento histológico. Os espécimes foram analisados em microscópio óptico (40X) conectado a um computador. As imagens foram capturadas e analisadas utilizando-se softwares específicos e submetidas à análise morfométrica por meio de uma grade de integração. A porcentagem de debris presente no terço apical dos canais foi calculada. Os dados foram submetidos à análise estatística por meio de ANOVA e teste de Tukey. Os resultados do presente estudo evidenciaram que não houve diferença estatisticamente significante (p>0,01) entre os grupos irrigados com NaOCl a 1% e detergente de mamona a 3,3%, que apresentaram menor porcentagem de debris no terço apical, 8,49% e 10,11% respectivamente. Aplicamos em um grupo de 36 crianças os testes dicótico de dígitos, dicótico de dissílabos alternados e dicótico não-verbal, os quais fazem parte do conjunto de avaliação do processamento auditivo. As crianças foram divididas em dois grupos que foram correlacionados: grupo experimental (GE) formado por 18 crianças com diagnóstico de dislexia e 18 crianças normais compondo o grupo comparação (GC), sem queixa de aprendizagem e pareadas em relação a sexo, lateralidade e nível sócio-econômico ao GE. Realizamos o exame de imagem (SPECT) no GE. Encontramos em nosso estudo diferença estatisticamente significante entre os grupos (GE e GC) em todos os testes avaliados. Em relação ao SPECT, apesar de não encontrarmos diferença estatisticamente significante entre os resultados, pudemos observar que 50% dos sujeitos avaliados apresentaram alteração, sendo a maior parte em áreas do lobo temporal esquerdo. Concluímos que crianças com dislexia apresentam alterações do processamento neurológico central que podem ser detectadas tanto em testes específicos de processamento auditivo, quanto em exames funcionais de imagem como SPECT.

OBJETIVO: Apesar da evolução das técnicas cirúrgicas que permitiram a padronização do transplante cardíaco e da descoberta dos imunossupressores, ainda hoje, a rejeição, os efeitos colaterais dos medicamentos e o processo de vasculopatia crônica são os principais problemas nos pós-transplantados. A procura por alternativas para superar estes impedimentos é o objetivo principal deste trabalho. Assim, foram realizados experimentos para determinar se a tolerância oral pode interferir no transplante cardíaco. MÉTODO: Camundongos C57BI/6J e C3H/HEJ, machos adultos foram divididos em dois grupos. O grupo denominado tolerante recebeu amendoim ad libitum na dieta por sete dias, enquanto o grupo imune foi mantido com uma dieta convencional para murinos. Ambos foram imunizados com 100 mg de extrato protéico derivado do amendoim por via sc. O transplante de coração de BAL/C recém-nato, de 24h, foi depositado no tecido subcutâneo das orelhas dos animais de ambos os grupos, com ou sem imunização concomitante do antígeno alimentar. RESULTADOS: Confirmamos que a administração de proteínas por via oral é capaz de induzir tolerância sistêmica, uma vez que os grupos tolerantes apresentam títulos de anticorpos específicos ao amendoim mais baixos que os grupos imunes. O coração transplantado apresentou-se mais preservado no grupo de animais C3H/HEJ tolerantes que foram desafiados concomitantemente com o antígeno da dieta do que os demais grupos. CONCLUSÃO: Foi determinado que os mecanismos de tolerância oral interferem no processo de rejeição de transplantes cardíacos alogênicos avasculares para a orelha de camundongos adultos, no entanto, de maneira não homogênea. Como os mecanismos de tolerância oral que alteram o sistema imunológico de modo a reduzir a rejeição ainda não foram esclarecidos, são precisos mais trabalhos nesta linha de pesquisa.OBJECTIVE: Although the development of surgical techniques and the discovery of immune-suppressors permitted heart transplantation to be accepted as a widespread treatment for terminally ill patients, rejection, complications due to these drugs and the chronic vasculopathies continue to be majority problems. The search for alternatives to supplant these impediments by performing avascular allogeneic heart transplants from newborn BALB/C mice (24h old) to the subcutaneous tissue of the ears of adult male C57BI/6J and C3H/HEJ mice to evaluate the interference of systemic oral tolerance on the rejection mechanisms are our main goal. METHOD: Adult, male C57BI/6 e C3H/HEJ were divided in two groups. The tolerant group received peanuts ad libitum for one week in the diet while the immune group continued to eat mouse chow. Both groups were immunized sc with 100mg of peanut extract. The transplanted newborn BALB/C hearts were deposited of into the subcutaneous tissue of the ears of tolerant and immune mice in the presence or not of concomitant immunization to peanut protein. RESULTS: We demonstrated that feeding proteins induces systemic tolerance since animals of both strains that ate the seeds before being immunized had lower systemic antibodies than immune animals. Tolerant C3H/HEJ mice with concomitant administration of the tolerogenic antigen presented a more preserved transplanted heart than all other groups. CONCLUSION: Although not homegeneously, the immunoregulatory mecanisms of oral tolerance modified the rejection process of alogenic avascular heart transplant to the ear of adult mice. As these mecanisms are not yet well understood more work needs to be done in this field.

São descritos 10 casos de crianças com idade cronológica entre 5 anos e 1 mês e 5 anos e 11 meses, divididas em grupo de doença cerebrovascular, (G-DCV) e grupo controle (Gc). As crianças do G-DCV apresentaram DCV confirmada na fase aguda através de exame neurológico clínico e de imagem na UNICAMP. Nas avaliações utilizou-se triagem audiológica, protocolo de avaliação da linguagem infantil, teste de vocabulário por imagens Peabody, com o objetivo de avaliar os diversos subsistemas lingüísticos e as noções perceptivo-cognitivas. Na análise qualitativa do G-DCV, do ponto de vista fonoaudiológico e neurológico, quando comparado ao Gc, mostrou recuperação completa do distúrbio adquirido de linguagem (DAL) em 2 crianças e alterações de linguagem em 3. O estudo dos casos revelou que os diversos aspectos que constituem a linguagem em desenvolvimento na criança pré-escolar devem ser analisados de forma individual, quantitativa e qualitativamente para achados conclusivos.We describe ten children, aging 5 years and 1 month until 5 years and 11 months, when the phonoaudiological assessment was conducted. They are divided according to cerebrovascular disease, in CVD group (CVD-G) and control group (cG). Children were seen and CVD was confirmed in the acute phase at UNICAMP hospital. Audiologic assessment, protocol for Infant language assessment, and Peabody picture vocabulary test were used in the evaluations. The qualitative analysis of the subjects from a phonoaudiological and neurological point of view has shown the recovery of acquired language desorder (ALD) with no influence whatsoever in the development of 2 subjects and subtle language and/or learning process alterations for 3 subjects. The cases study has revealed that all aspects of language development in preschool children should be analyzed in an individual, quantitative, and qualitative basis to lead to conclusive findings.

In mycology, culture is the best way to demonstrate and identify pathogenic fungi. Many kinds of media have been developed and modified, using fungal biochemical properties to recognize them. The most common media are Sabouraud, Malt Agar, Cornmeal agar, Potato-dextrose agar, and Staib agar. Staib agar has been widely used for identification of yeasts from the genus Cryptococcus and other fungi. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the usefulness of Staib agar, and of a modified Staib medium without creatinine, in the isolation and identification of fungi. Forty-six Cryptococcus neoformans strains plus one control strain were identified by morphological and biochemical criteria, using urease test (Christensen urea agar) and culture in Sablac medium. The strains were then transferred into standard Staib and Staib without creatinine agar plates. Morphological features and phenoloxidase production were evaluated after one week incubation at room temperature (26-28°C). Culture in standard and modified Staib agar yielded brown color colonies (phenoloxidase production) in both media in 43 (91.5%) cases. Staib agar without creatinine is an excellent medium for identification of C. neoformans, with the advantage of a low cost and easy preparation.

São descritas duas crianças, uma com idade cronológica de 5 anos e 6 meses e outra com 5 anos e 10 meses. Ambas apresentaram doença cerebrovascular (DCV) bilateral, confirmada na fase aguda através de exame neurológico clínico e de imagem. Os dois pacientes foram atendidos nesta fase por médico neurologista infantil da Disciplina de Neurologia Infantil da FCM/UNICAMP, ambulatório de DCV na infância. Nas avaliações utilizou-se Triagem Audiológica, Protocolo de Avaliação da Linguagem Infantil, Teste de Vocabulário por Imagens Peabody, com o objetivo de avaliar os diversos subsistemas lingüísticos e as noções perceptiva-cognitivas. Na análise qualitativa dos dois sujeitos, do ponto de vista fonoaudiológico e neurológico, houve recuperação completa do distúrbio adquirido de linguagem para o primeiro e alterações sutis no posterior processo de aprendizagem do segundo. O estudo dos casos revelou que os aspectos predominantes devem ser analisados de forma individual, quantitativa e qualitativamente para achados conclusivos.We describe two children, aging 5 years and 6 months and 5 years and 10 months respectively, when the phonoaudiological assessment was conducted. Both children presented bilateral cerebrovascular disease (CVD), confirmed in the acute phase by means of clinical and image neurological test. During this phase, the two patients were examined by a pediatric neurologist of the Pediatric Neurology Discipline of FCM/UNICAMP, pediatric CVD ambulatory. Audiologic Assessment, Protocol for Infant Language Assessment, and Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test were used in the evaluations. The qualitative analysis of the two subjects from a phonoaudiological and neurological point of view has shown the recovery of adquired languague disturbance with no influence whatsoever in the development of the first subject and subtle language and/or learning process alterations for the second subject. The cases study has revealed that the predominant aspects should be analyzed in an individual, quantitative, and qualitative basis to lead to conclusive findings.

O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar o desempenho de escolares em relação à avaliação formal e a opinião de professores. Participaram 164 escolares de ensino fundamental de cidade do interior paulista, sendo 81 do sexo masculino e 83 do sexo feminino. Foi utilizado o Teste de Desempenho Escolar e foram definidos 2 grupos, segundo a opinião da professora quanto ao desempenho normal e abaixo da média. Os resultados revelaram diferença significativa indicando que o menor desempenho foi verificado para o sexo masculino e para a quarta série. As médias do grupo definido pela professora com desempenho inferior foram abaixo do esperado e diferiram significativamente. A opinião da professora neste estudo foi fundamental para a identificação dos problemas relacionados à escolaridade.

Identification of 43 C. neoformans isolates from human sources were performed using the Beijerinck auxonogram method modified by Araujo and the MicroScan® DADE BEHRING automatic test. Identification of the isolates was achieved reliably by both tests. Therefore the Araujo Auxonogram method may be applied in small laboratories with limited resources as an inexpensive, simple and reliable method.

A AR Consultoria Ltda., dos sócios e irmãos Alfredo e Rodolfo, especializada na venda de produtos químicos e na prestação de serviços para agroindústrias, nasceu com base em uma oportunidade visualizada por Rodolfo, tornar-se fornecedor da empresa em que trabalhava. Funcionário de uma agroindústria da cidade de Chapecó/SC possuía conhecimentos técnicos e uma ótima relação com seus colegas superiores e subordinados. Procurou a empresa na qual era funcionário e ofereceu produtos similares, mais eficientes e com preços menores aos praticados pelos fornecedores atuais, mas se deparou com algo que não tinha conhecimento: a corrupção. Surgira o primeiro desafio ético da AR Consultoria: o pagamento de um “extra por fora” para se tornar fornecedor. Alfredo, recém-formado em Administração, empolgado com a possibilidade e oportunidade de empreender, aos poucos conheceu as dificuldades em iniciar um negócio próprio, a alta carga tributária, falta de incentivos, falta de crédito no mercado e a oportunidade de “ganhar um pouco mais” vendendo sem nota fiscal. Essas e outras situações marcaram as dificuldades de início da abertura de mercado da AR Consultoria Ltda. O objetivo do caso é apresentar uma situação real, presente em alguns ramos e setores organizacionais e que exija do leitor uma tomada de decisão, uma postura ética diante dos desafios morais apresentados.

This study evaluated two cases of Apert's syndrome, through phonological, cognitive, and neuropsychological instruments and correlated the results to complementary exams. In short, this study reveals the necessity of application of neuropsychological, cognitive and phonological evaluation and correlation of the results with complementary testings because significant differences can be present in the Apert's syndrome.

Apresentamos os resultados de pequisa sobre Residência Médica em Neurologia Infantil, catalogando dados atualizados sobre o ensino e treinamento nos vários centros de formação do Brasil. Foi possível constatar 17 Instituições com programação organizadas, sendo 6 credenciadas pela CNRM, 10 não credenciadas e, um em diligência. O conteúdo programático é desenvolvido em 3 ou 4 anos, incluindo o pré-requisíto, sendo a carga horária anual, variável, de 1900 a 2880 horas/ano.

The clinical and neurological findings of three neonates with the diagnosis of cerebrovascular disease are reported. The neuropsychological evaluation disclosed impairment of fine motor function, coordination, language, perception and behavioral disturbances. Brain SPECT imaging revealed perfusional deficits in the three cases.

Objetivo: avaliar o estado imune de mulheres em idade reprodutiva, em relação ao vírus da rubéola. Métodos: foram analisadas alíquotas de soros de 2.243 mulheres na faixa etária dos 15 aos 45 anos (média de 26 anos), residentes na área urbana de Natal, RN, para avaliação do estado imune em relação ao vírus da rubéola. Do total das mulheres examinadas, 1.170 (52,1%) eram gestantes e 1.073 (47,9%) não-gestantes. Foi pesquisada a presença de anticorpos das classes IgM e IgG no soro de todas as pacientes, empregando-se a técnica de ELISA em fase sólida, revelada mediante fluorescência (ELFA). Resultados: do total das pacientes analisadas, 1.632 se apresentaram imunes e 611 se mostraram suscetíveis ao vírus da rubéola. Os índices médios de imunidade e de suscetibilidade observados nos 4 anos estudados foram 73,0 e 27,0% respectivamente. No grupo das mulheres consideradas suscetíveis, 14,5% não apresentaram qualquer sinal da presença de anticorpos contra o vírus da rubéola, 7,7% apresentaram anticorpos da classe IgM isoladamente e em 4,8% delas foi detectada a presença simultânea de anticorpos IgM e IgG. Conclusão: os achados revelaram que uma parcela significativa da população feminina de Natal, em idade reprodutiva, ainda se encontra suscetível ao vírus da rubéola, revelando a existência real de risco de infecção congênita por esse patógeno. Recomenda-se a vacinação seletiva dessas mulheres contra a rubéola, como forma segura de prevenir as manifestações relacionadas à síndrome de rubéola congênita.Purpose: to evaluate the immune status of women in reproductive age regarding the rubella virus. Methods: 2,243 samples of serum from women in the age range of 15 to 45 years, with an average of 26 years, living in the urban area of Natal, RN were analyzed, to evaluate the immune status in regard to rubella virus. Of these women, 1,170 (52.1%) were pregnant and 1,073 (47.9%) were not. IgM and IgG antibodies were determined, using solid phase ELISA and fluorescence (ELFA) techniques. Results: of the 2,243 women, 1,632 showed immunity to rubella virus and 611 did not, therefore being susceptible to this virus. The rates of immunity and susceptibility in this study were 73.0% and 27.0%, respectively. In 611 susceptible woman, 14.5% did not present antibodies against rubella virus, 7.7% had only IgM antibody and 4.8% had IgG and IgM antibodies. Conclusions: our findings show that a significant group of women from Natal, in reproductive age, is still susceptible to rubella virus, indicating the risk of congenital infection by this pathogen. We advise the selective vaccination of those women against rubella to prevent clinical manifestations related to the congenital form of the disease.

A time series of chlorophyll a and in situ primary production sampled over a period of 33 days during summer in Ubatuba region, southeastem Brazil, was subjected to multivariate and harmonic analysis. Principal Component Analysis has revealed four factors interpreted as (i) South Atlantic Central Water forcing; (ii) Transient ftontal systems and rain fali forcings; (iii) Wind forcing normal to the coast; (iv) Wind forcing parallel to the coast, as main factors in the variability of the phytoplankton biomass and primary productivity. Splitting of the time series according to four main events which had profound effects on the physicochemical characteristics of the region showed the following variations in the primary productivity integrated over the photic layer (g C m-2 day-1): mixing→stratification period, 0.40 ± 0.11; heavy rainfall, 1.24± 0.28; stratification after rainfall, 0.74± 0.10; stratification→mixing period, 0.90± 0.27; stratification after deep mixing, 0.63 ± 0.28. Harmonic analysis revealed two indistinguishable significant peaks of the phytoplankton biomass - one at a period of 8.25 days and one at a period of 6.6 days, contributing, respectively, about 17 and 32% ofthe total variance. Atmospheric forcing showed a characteristic period,of 200-264 hours while phytoplankton biomass response ranged over the 144-192 hours time scales and primary productivity was best related to the environment 360 hours before. Relative to total nitrogen' and ' biomass primary productivity oscillations were lagged about 96-144 hours. The interruption of steady-state conditions by transient atmospheric ev~nts and wind field intensification are the determining factors driving phytoplankton changes in this coastal environment.Uma série temporal de clorofila a e produção primária obtida em um período de 33 dias durante o verão na região de Ubatuba, sudeste do Brasil, foi submetida à análise multivariada e harmônica. A Análise de Componentes Principais revelou quatro fatores interpretados como (i) Água Central do Atlântico Sul; (ii) Sistemas ftontais transientes e chuvas; (iii) Ventos normais à costa; (iv) Ventos paralelos à costa. Estes fatores atuam como forçantes ambientais na determinação da variabilidade observada na biomassa fitoplanctônica e produtividade primária. A divisão da séríe temporal de acordo com quatro eventos modificadores das características fisicoquímicas da região mostrou a seguinte variabilidade na produção primária integrada (g C m,2 dia,l) na camada eufótica: coluna de água homogênea em processo de estratificação térmica- 0,4O±0, 11; coluna de água estratificada e chuvas intensas- 1,24±0,28; coluna de água misturada em fase de estratificação térmica após intensas chuvas- 0,74:f:0,10; coluna de água estratificada em fase de processo de mistura- 0,90±0,27; coluna de água homogênea em fase de estratifição térmica após intensa mistura- 0,63±0,28. A Análise Harmônica revelou dois picos de biomassa significativos- um com período de 8,25 dias e outro com período de 6,6 dias, contribuindo, respectivamente, com 17 e 32% da variância total da série. A forçante atmosférica apresentou um período característico de 200-264 horas enquanto que a escala de resposta da biomassa fitoplanctônica variou de 144-192 horas e a de produtividade primária um período de 360 horas. Em relação à biomassa e nitrogênio total, a produtividade primária apresentou uma defasagem de 96-144 horas.

Germline inactivating variants in BRCA1 lead to a significantly increased risk of breast and ovarian cancers in carriers. While the functional effect of many variants can be inferred from the DNA sequence, determining the effect of missense variants present a significant challenge. A series of biochemical and cell biological assays have been successfully used to explore the impact of these variants on the function of BRCA1, which contribute to assessing their likelihood of pathogenicity. It has been determined that variants that co-localize with structural or functional motifs are more likely to disrupt the stability and function of BRCA1. Here we assess the functional impact of 37 variants chosen to probe the functional impact of variants in phosphorylation sites and in the BRCT domains. In addition, we perform a meta-analysis of 170 unique variants tested by the transcription activation assays in the carboxy-terminal domain of BRCA1 using a recently developed computation model to provide assessment for functional impact and their likelihood of pathogenicity.

Todavia, assiste-se hoje às mais diversas releituras dos textos publicados pelos irmãos, o que parece sugerir uma potencia desses textos mais além da tradicional classificação. Consequentemente, este texto examina a tematização da pulsão do olhar, em duas versões do conto Marienkind, e a articula à natureza mesma do conto maravilhoso.

Mastite bovina é considerada principal doença causadora de grandes perdas econômicas nos rebanhos leiteiros. Antimicrobianos químicos promovem resistência farmacológica, resíduos no alimento e contaminação ambiental. Este estudo objetivou verificar a atividade antibacteriana, in vitro, do extrato de romã em Staphylococcus aureus isolado de leite bovino, avaliar sua atividade antioxidante, e quantificar teores de fenóis e flavonoides totais nos diferentes extratos utilizados. Utilizou-se para tanto extratos aquosos da casca do fruto (EAC) e folhas (EAF), secos e in natura de romã. Adicionalmente, avaliou-se atividade antioxidante (AA%), teores de fenóis e flavonóides totais. Amostras de leite foram semeadas, incubadas, e as colônias de Staphylococcus aureus foram ajustadas a 1,0x106 UFC/mL ao padrão nº6 da escala de MacFarland. A sensibilidade dos isolados microbianos foi determinada, em quintuplicata, pela técnica de difusão em discos. A Concentração Inibitória Mínima foi determinada pelo halo de inibição superior a 15 mm. Os resultados foram avaliados pelo método ANOVA, teste de Tukey 5%, utilizando-se o programa SISVAR 5.3 - DEX/UFLA. EACseco inibiu crescimento bacteriano a partir de 3%. EAFseco, EACin natura e EAFin natura, só apresentaram esta atividade a partir de 15%, 20% e 30% respectivamente. A ação antioxidante do EACseco foi verificada a partir de 75µg/mL, com valores correspondentes a 14,2%, atingindo um platô de 65,9% na concentração de 250µg/mL. Entretanto, essa atividade não foi correlacionada aos teores de fenóis totais e flavonoides. Provavelmente outras substâncias alcalóides, podem ter sido responsáveis por esta atividade. Conclui-se que os extratos de Punica granatum L., principalmente aquele obtido pela casca do fruto seco, demonstraram atividade inibitória sobre S. aureus, evidenciando a potencialidade de seu uso para o controle da mastite bovina.

Global food demand, climatic variability and reduced land availability are driving the need for domestication of new crop species. The accelerated domestication of a rice-like Australian dryland polyploid grass, Microlaena stipoides (Poaceae), was targeted using chemical mutagenesis in conjunction with high throughput sequencing of genes for key domestication traits. While M. stipoides has previously been identified as having potential as a new grain crop for human consumption, only a limited understanding of its genetic diversity and breeding system was available to aid the domestication process. Next generation sequencing of deeply-pooled target amplicons estimated allelic diversity of a selected base population at 14.3 SNP/Mb and identified novel, putatively mutation-induced polymorphisms at about 2.4 mutations/Mb. A 97% lethal dose (LD₉₇) of ethyl methanesulfonate treatment was applied without inducing sterility in this polyploid species. Forward and reverse genetic screens identified beneficial alleles for the domestication trait, seed-shattering. Unique phenotypes observed in the M2 population suggest the potential for rapid accumulation of beneficial traits without recourse to a traditional cross-breeding strategy. This approach may be applicable to other wild species, unlocking their potential as new food, fibre and fuel crops.

This technical report describes the modifications made in ID-Fungal anti-bodies in the IMMY line in fungus serology. The first part is related to the increase in the sensitivity of the technique due to the concentrations of serum, which doubles the quantity of the same when added to diffusion wells. This procedure is useful basically in immune-compromised patients in which the quantity of blood antibodies is low. The second modification helps to facilitate the reading of precipitation bands through bright blue coloring with Coomassie, which at the same time aids the preservations and storage of the plates over time.

In fact, it is necessary to recognize the merit of this work, which was able to highlight the general laws that guide the fantastic literary text, defining the borders which are kept with the akin genres - the wonderful and the weird. Recognizing, thus, the bonds which link the fantastic and the wonderful, this work, though, does not aim at the formal issues which individualize the genres, but it approaches problems concerning the reception of the wonderful. The focus adopted here must, effectively, emphasize the process through which the wonderful, circumscribed to the territory of the fairy tales, happened to isolate itself in the segment of the infant-public-oriented literature.

El uso de quelantes como irrigantes previo a la medicación tópica y a la obturación, es relevante para lograr un correcto saneado y adaptación del material de obturación a las paredes del conducto. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar y comparar in vitro, la capacidad de limpieza y remoción del barrillo dentinario de las paredes del conducto y canalículos, luego de la instrumentación, con diferentes irrigantes. En la irrigación final se utilizó NaOCI, EDTA 17%, Quelant (preparado comercial con EDTA) y ácido cítrico 10% y 25%. Posteriormente se cortaron las coronas y las raíces fueron seccionadas longitudinalmente y examinadas en el MEB en sus tres tercios. Los resultados mostraron que el NaOCI con un quelante mostraron diferentes grados de limpieza. Con Quelant y ácido cítrico en sus dos concentraciones, se lograron resultados satisfactorios

O Transtorno de Déficit de Atenção e Hiperatividade é um transtorno de conduta é crônico, com substrato biológico muito importante, não devido a uma única causa, apresenta forte base genética e é formado por um grupo heterogêneo de crianças. Inclui crianças com inteligência normal, que apresentam dificuldades significativas para se adequar em termos de comportamento e/ou aprendizagem às normas esperadas para sua idade. Sendo dividido em três subtipos denominados como Subtipo Desatento, Subtipo Hiperativo/Impulsivo e Subtipo Combinado. O objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar o desempenho cognitivo, de funções corticais superiores e escolar. Utilizando como instrumento de avaliação o WISC Ill, TLN-Ce TDE. Foram avaliadas 13 crianças, com idade média de 9 anos, sendo a sua maioria do sexo masculino, frequentando o ensino fundamental da rede publicada região de Campinas. Como resultado, o grupo apresenta desempenho cognitivo dentro da média, com melhor resultado nos índices fatoriais de organização perceptual e compreensão verba. Na avaliação das funções corticais tiveram pior desempenho nas áreas cadêmicas, ritmo e habilidade tátil. Na avaliação de desempenho escolar apresentou dificuldade em escrita, aritmética e leitura.

TDAH é um transtorno comum que acontece na infância e que persiste na adolescência e na vida adulta na maioria dos casos. Algumas pesquisas atuais já mostram que crianças e adolescentes com TDAH apresentam baixa auto-estima. Em uma comparação do auto-conceito de crianças brasileiras com TDAH e de crianças sem dificuldades de aprendizagem ou atencional, os resultados evidenciaram mais sentimentos de culpa, de acreditar fazer as coisas de forma errada e pior auto-conceito social nas crianças com TDAH em relação às crianças sem dificuldades de aprendizagem ou de atenção. Crianças com TDAH fregiientemente tem baixa auto-estima e dificuldades no relacionamento com amigos. Portanto, é importante ter meios de avaliação que possam detectar como essas características podem dificultar a vida acadêmica e social de modo que seja possivel melhorar a qualidade de vida deles.

Epilepsia e TDAH são transtornos neuropsiquiátricos comuns na infância e adolescência. O TDAH afeta aproximadamente 3-7% das crianças em idade escolar e a prevalência da epilepsia é de 1,5 para 8,9 / 1.000 crianças e adolescentes. Ambas as desordens interferem no funcionamento acadêmico e social. Foi realizada uma revisão da literatura dos últimos 10 anos no MEDLINE e LILACS com a combinação das palavras-chave “ADHD” e * Epilepsy”. O objetivo desta revisão foi procurar, na literatura, dados que possam explicar a associação entre as duas doenças e a melhor forma de tratamento dessa associação.

Como funções neuropsicológicas a atenção e as funções executivas possuem grande importância para que a capacidade de aprendizagem não seja prejudicada, como também são funções que se apresentam alteradas no quadro do Transtorno de Déficit de Atenção e Hiperatividade, uma vez que a atenção é definida como a capacidade de selecionar e manter os estímulos adequados para atividade e as funções executivas são capacidade de organizar, planejar e executar a atividade, capacidades estas prejudicadas em uma criança com o diagnóstico de TDAH.

Objetivo: Comparar os subtipos de TDAH propostos pelo DSM-IV (1994), quanto a resposta ao treino de atenção. Método: Quarenta sujeitos diagnosticados como TDAH compuseram os Grupos de Estudo, subdivididos em: TDAH-D -Tipo Predominantemente Desatento e TDAH-C Tipo Combinado, média etária de 9 anos e 8 meses, ambos os sexos, cursando entre 1º e 6º anos do ensino fundamental de escolas públicas de Campinas e região, sendo que 23 crianças foram encaminhadas ao DISAPRE/FCM-UNICAME; e 17 crianças selecionadas em uma Escola Municipal de Campinas. O Grupo Controle foi composto por 30 crianças sem comprometimento. O diagnóstico de TDAH foi realizado pela equipe interdisciplinar do DISAPRE. O Treino de Atenção foi elaborado pelos pesquisadores segundo modelo proposto na literatura, constando de atividades auditivas e visuais, aplicadas em 12 sessões individuais com 20 sujeitos do Grupo de Estudo. Resultados: Os sujeitos com o subtipo TDAH-D apresentaram mais dificuldade nas atividades que envolviam atenção sustentada auditiva e atenção seletiva visual, e as estratégias de solução de problemas e automonitoramento foram mais bem empregadas que pelos sujeitos diagnosticados como TDAH-C. Estes apresentaram defasagem nas tarefas que envolviam atenção sustentada visual, atenção seletiva auditiva e atenção alternada auditiva e visual, evidenciando comprometimento maior na inibição de respostas e autocontrole. Conclusão: Diferenças atencionais significativas foram delineadas para cada subtipo. Além de levantar a importância do uso de treino atencional na reabilitação de crianças com TDAH.

Henrique Martinelli sempre sonhou em tornar a sua pequena empresa uma referência na produção de vinhos. Porém, a organização apresentava algumas deficiências, como a falta de tecnologia, baixa capacitação dos colaboradores e dificuldades de distribuição dos produtos, sendo que estes fatores não permitiam que o sonho se tornasse realidade. Além disso, o volume de vendas e o faturamento da empresa vinham caindo nos últimos quatro anos. Sua empresa, a vinícola Dom Ângelo, fundada em 1992 e localizada no Vale Dourado, surgiu para que a família Martinelli pudesse enfrentar um momento de crise nas indústrias de vinhos localizadas na cidade de Videira Alta (RS). Até meados dos anos de 1980, a família se dedicava ao plantio e venda de uvas para outras vinícolas da região. Com a queda no volume de vendas da uva, advinda da crise nas indústrias vinícolas da região, Henrique Martinelli e seu pai Luigi, resolveram fabricar seus próprios vinhos e vendê-los diretamente aos consumidores e outros comerciantes, buscando um aumento nos lucros.

Combination with other small molecule drugs represents a promising strategy to improve therapeutic efficacy of FLT3 inhibitors in the clinic. We demonstrated that combining ABT-869, a FLT3 inhibitor, with SAHA, a HDAC inhibitor, led to synergistic killing of the AML cells with FLT3 mutations and suppression of colony formation. We identified a core gene signature that is uniquely induced by the combination treatment in 2 different leukemia cell lines. Among these, we showed that downregulation of PTP4A3 (PRL-3) played a role in this synergism. PRL-3 is downstream of FLT3 signaling and ectopic expression of PRL-3 conferred therapeutic resistance through upregulation of STAT (signal transducers and activators of transcription) pathway activity and anti-apoptotic Mcl-1 protein. PRL-3 interacts with HDAC4 and SAHA downregulates PRL-3 via a proteasome dependent pathway. In addition, PRL-3 protein was identified in 47% of AML cases, but was absent in myeloid cells in normal bone marrows. Our results suggest such combination therapies may significantly improve the therapeutic efficacy of FLT3 inhibitors. PRL-3 plays a potential pathological role in AML and it might be a useful therapeutic target in AML, and warrant clinical investigation.

Objective. To assess cognitive development and learning in children who have had strokes. Method. Twenty-nine stroke patients and 18 children with no brain lesions and no learning impairments were evaluated. For the cognitive assessment, Piaget's clinical method was used. Writing, arithmetic, and reading abilities were assessed by the school performance test. Results. The mean age at evaluation was 9.6 years. Among the 29 children, 20 had early lesions (mean of 2.4 years old). The stroke was ischemic in 18 subjects; there were 7 cases of recurrence. Six children could not answer the tests. A high index of cognitive delay and low performance in writing, arithmetic, and reading were verified. Comparison with the control group revealed that the children who have had strokes had significantly lower performances. Conclusion. In this sample, strokes impaired cognitive development and learning. It is important that children have access to educational support and cognitive rehabilitation after injury. These approaches may minimise the effects of strokes on learning in children.

This article focuses on the World Heritage city and the urban development issues that are related to it through one example : the city of Sao Luis (Maranhao), in Brazil. We will first reflect on the patrimonialization process, launched by the inclusion of the city into the World Heritage Unesco program, and then on the commodification process of celebrations, which is inherent to World Heritage cities. The patrimonial value of Sao Luis historical center legitimates new urban policies, which we will analyze thoroughl : renovation, rehabilitation and promotion programs, urban development strategies such as the promotion of leisure and culture consumption in the heart of the historical center and the creation of new structures to improve the management of tourism.

En el presente trabajo pretendemos documentar una ceremonial ritual aymara, denominada "despacho". Para este efecto procederemos primero a presentar la etnografía correspondiente y luego analizaremos los símbolos y la ceremonia ritual, utlizando como sinónims los siguientes términos: "mesa", "pago", "ofrenda", "despacho", "alcansu", y "pagapu". Es necesario también aclarar que hemos utlizado una serie de términos kechua-aymaras cuyos significados no explicitamos porque entendemos que son ampliamente conocidos y utilizados en la literatura antropológica del área andina.
