- Abstract
Increasing numbers of small proteins with diverse physiological roles are being identified and characterized in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic systems, but the origins and evolution of these proteins remain unclear. Recent genomic sequence analyses in several organisms suggest that new functions encoded by small open reading frames (sORFs) may emerge de novo from noncoding sequences. However, experimental data demonstrating if and how randomly generated sORFs can confer beneficial effects to cells are limited. Here, we show that by upregulating hisB expression, de novo small proteins (<= 50 amino acids in length) selected from random sequence libraries can rescue Escherichia coli cells that lack the conditionally essential SerB enzyme. The recovered small proteins are hydrophobic and confer their rescue effect by binding to the 5 ' end regulatory region of the his operon mRNA, suggesting that protein binding promotes structural rearrangements of the RNA that allow increased hisB expression. This study adds RNA regulatory elements as another interacting partner for de novo proteins isolated from random sequence libraries and provides further experimental evidence that small proteins with selective benefits can originate from the expression of nonfunctional sequences.

Physics - Atomic Physics - Abstract
We develop the idea of selectively manipulating the condensate in a trapped Bose-condensed gas, without perturbing the thermal cloud. The idea is based on the possibility to modify the mean field interaction between atoms (scattering length) by nearly resonant incident light or by spatially uniform change of the trapping magnetic field. For the gas in the Thomas-Fermi regime we find analytical scaling solutions for the condensate wavefunction evolving under arbitrary variations of the scattering length $a$. The change of $a$ from positive to negative induces a global collapse of the condensate, and the final stages of the collapse will be governed by intrinsic decay processes., Comment: 4 pages, LaTeX, other comments are at http://WWW.amolf.nl/departments/quantumgassen/TITLE.HTML

Bogolyubov-De Gennes equations for the excitations of a Bose condensate in the Thomas-Fermi regime in harmonic traps of any asymmetry and introduce a classification of eigenstates. In the case of cylindrical symmetry we emphasize the presence of an accidental degeneracy in the excitation spectrum at certain values of the projection of orbital angular momentum on the symmetry axis and discuss possible consequences of the degeneracy in the context of new signatures of Bose-Einstein condensation., Comment: 4 pages, LaTeX, other comments are at http://WWW.amolf.nl/departments/quantumgassen/TITLE.HTML

General Medicine - Abstract
The authors conducted this study to assess the influence of the strength properties of packaging materials for baked confectionery products on the tensile strength, fracture strength, and elongation level. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the mechanical properties (impact strength, fracture strength, and distance to fracture). The paper presents a brief overview of modern methods of functional and operational properties control for polymer packaging materials used for food products and describes their features. The objects of the study were samples of packaging for gingerbread purchased from trade organizations. It has been shown that quality control of polymer packaging materials for food is key in determining the possibility of their intended use. The test results allow evaluating the possibilities and limitations, optimizing the technological process, and obtaining high-quality packaging. In conclusion, the authors give recommendations to gingerbread manufacturers to increase the competitiveness of the product and meet consumer demand.

- Abstract
A pulmonary hernia is a protrusion of the lung through a defect in the surrounding tissues, a rather rare pathology and each clinical case is of scientific interest. The first description of this rare pathology was performed by Roland in 1499. About 300 observations have been described in the world literature, most of the publications are isolated cases of observation of this pathology. We have presented the first experience of thoracoscopic hernioplasty in the Russian Federation for intercostal pulmonary hernia, and also summarized the literature data on this topic.

- Abstract
Despite the constantly improving technique of operations, the use of modern suture materials and stitching-cutting devices, the problem of the occurrence of the failure of the bronchial stump remains unresolved. Many methods have been proposed for the treatment of bronchial stump failure, ranging from endoscopic mucosal coagulation and the installation of various types of occluders and ending with repeated surgical interventions. There are a huge number of publications devoted to the use of fibrin glue in various fields of medicine, for example, in neurosurgery, maxillofacial surgery, orthopedics, dentistry and thoracic surgery, fibrin glue is successfully used, including in the development of bronchial stump failure. - Abstract
The article from the perspective of interregional comparative analysis methodology substantiates the system of labor productivity factors and presents the results of statistical modeling of labor productivity in the regions of Russia in 2020.The shortcomings of the existing measures of labor productivity in international and domestic practice are noted, namely, the ambiguity and inconsistency of the assessment results. The authors propose a technique for constructing an integral index of regional labor productivity and substantiate a four-factor econometric model of the dependence of the integral index of regional labor productivity, which allowed for an improved system of labour productivity factors to be applied in regional economic analysis. Estimates are given of the relative impact of both traditional and new factors of regional labor productivity, which are the increasing incidence rate and the growing share of unprofitable enterprises (organizations), investments and industrial output per capita in the regions of Russia in 2020.The need to monitor regional labor productivity factors annually to help bring forward problems in the regions is justified. The reasons that led to the insufficient level of labour productivity (compared to Russian average) were identified. According to the authors (following the results of socio-economic development in 2020), they should include low growth rates of investment and production volumes, as well as an increase in the incidence and in the share of unprofitable enterprises and organizations.

The recently finalised Basel Framework continues to allow banks to use internal data and models to define risk estimates and use them to compute their capital adequacy ratios. Globally, there are more than two thousand banks running Basel internal models. However, there are countries that have no such banks. They face the dilemma of which of the transition paths to adopt: the voluntary path, as in the EU, or the mandatory path, as in the US. Our objective is to take an investor’s perspective and benchmark the two modes. Thus, we wish to determine whether there is a premium for either of them or whether they are, perhaps, equivalent. The novelty of our research is in its robust estimate that investors prefer a mandatory transition to a voluntary one if we consider the period of the 2007–2009 crisis. However, the use of the common post-crisis sample yields the opposite conclusion. A voluntary transition is preferred, though it implies a rise in stock volatility, and thus, the overall risk-return relationship is preserved. This is mostly driven by the tighter used when adopting internal models in the US compared to the EU. European banks have had more room to expand their business after the IRB transition, while for US banks, the transition involved a reduction in business, all else being equal. Our findings are of value primarily to emerging economies such as Argentina or Indonesia.

- Abstract
Boulders are a major surface feature on solid planets and small bodies, including asteroids and comets. Interest in these clasts range from applications relevant for landing site selection to geomechanical parameter characterization of the soil on which they rest [1], to measurements of their size frequency distributions [2] which is relevant for an understanding of their formation and erosion processes. On the Moon boulders are generally found in association with craters, hilltops, rilles, and other steep relief forms. Two main mechanisms of boulder formation are bedrock fragmentation and excavation by impacts, and progressive exposure of pre-existing blocks and fractured bedrock by removal of regolith from steep reliefs by diffusive creep. An important issue are transport processes which can move the stones on the surface of their parent bodies. On the Moon, one group of boulders, frequently called “rolling stones”, have left tracks on the surface which can cover large distances. Mainly two mechanisms, meteoritic impact and moonquakes [3], have been cited in the literature as drivers of boulder displacements. Much less attention has been given to the hypothesis that other processes like thermal solar-induced rock breakdown [4] could deliver the initial momenta that could initiate the movement of meta stabile rocks. From an AI -based mapping of the distribution of boulders with tracks on the lunar surface [5] we know that the majority of these boulders are found – not surprisingly - within craters. However, as the AI-based procedure strongly underestimated the number of boulders with tracks, we have conducted a new investigation to map these boulders. However, such a mapping it is only one prerequisite in understanding whether a thermally-induced breakdown could be responsible for an initial triggering of boulder movements. Boulders moving down the slopes disturb the mature regolith and move fresh lunar soil to the surface. This process should remotely be detectable through the stronger spectral features of the fresher optically immature regolith. The number of non-decayed boulders along crater walls should therefore be correlated with the strength of the absorption bands in spectra taken from those crater walls. Spectral characteristics of the refreshed crater walls are measurable through various quantities in the VIS-NIR (e.g. color ratios, etc.)To start addressing the question to what extent a solar-induced breakdown can trigger rock movements, we have chosen lunar craters for which we have generated new boulder maps. For these craters we determine spectral characteristics and mineralogical composition based on a nonlinear spectral mixing model using M3 hyperspectral imager data from Chandrayaan-1. We are reporting the first results of spectral feature mapping for these craters and discuss the mineralogical interpretation, as well as the existence of a correlation between the number of observable boulders inside craters and identified spectral features of the regolith.References:[1] Filice, A., 1967, Science, 1967-06-16 156(3781): 1486-1487. Desalination of sea water is becoming more urgent for many regions. In the coming decades water will be used for desalination from various reservoirs of the World Ocean. It is important to determine the operating modes of desalination plants, which ensure the minimum cost of desalinated water at different salinity of sea water. Mathematical modeling of the desalination plant with mechanical vapor compres-sion (MVC) is carried out. It has been established that for each sea water salinity there is an optimum salinity value of the boiling brine in the evaporator. An approximating dependence was obtained for calculating the optimal salt content.

The possibility of potassium magnesium phosphate (PMP) matrix application for immobilization of clinoptilolite with simulator of radioactive cesium isotopes was investigated. X-ray phase analysis of the natural clinoptilolite sample has shown that it includes two main phases of clinoptilolite (Na,K)₄CaAl₆Si₃₀O₇₂·24H₂O, and mordenite (Na₂Ca, K₂)₄Al₈Si₄₀O₉₆ · 28H₂O. In addition, impurities of SiO₂, Fe₂O₃ and TiO₂ phases are observed. To saturate clinoptilolite with cesium, 0.5 M solution of cesium chloride was used. A chemical analysis of clinoptilolite after saturation with cesium has demonstrated that the content of cesium in clinoptilolite was about 2 wt.%. After the introduction of clinoptilolite with cesium in the PMP matrix, the obtained material was identified as potassiummagnesium phosphate with the presence of clinoptilolite, mordenite, TiO₂ and unreacted MgO phases. The results of the electron microscopy analysis have shown that cesium was dislocated between PMP matrix and clinoptilolite, incorporated into the PMP matrix. Normalized leaching rate of cesium from PMP matrix with 25wt.% clinoptilolite was about 3.2.10-4 g / cm2 per day after 7 days testing.

Rationale: Glycogen storage diseases (GSD, glycogenosis) are a group of hereditary disorders of carbohydrate metabolism that is characterized by excess glycogen accumulation in various organs and tissues due to deficiency or absence of glycogen-splitting enzymes. GSD diagnostics requires an assessment of the patient's health status, severity and frequency of hypoglycemias, as well as the choice of a strategy for nutritional support to prevent hypoglycemia.Aim: To assess efficacy of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) as a new method to diagnose hypoglycemia in children with hepatic types of GSD and the role of this assessment method in personalization of nutritional regimen in these disorders.Materials and methods: The study included 51 child with confirmed diagnosis of GSD at the age of 6.9 ± 0.7 years, of them 36 boys and 15 girls. Thirty three percent of patients had GSD type I, 22% – type III, 45% – types VI and IX. All patients had their glycemic levels measured as glycemic profiles and oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), as well as by means of real-time CGM. The results were analyzed both in the whole group of patients and in the groups with various GSD types. Results: Measurement of glycemic profiles in children with GSD at daytime did not detect any significant abnormalities. During OGTT, more rapid decline of glucose levels was seen in younger kids and in patients with GSD type I; however, the differences were not statistically significant (11 patients (65% of cases) had the lowest glucose levels at 180 minutes of the test: 3.1 ± 0.3 mmol/L, p > 0.05). Fasting hypoglycemia in the OGTT was found in 4 (24%) children with GSD type I and in 3 (13%) children with GSD types VI and IX. Hypoglycemia at the end of the test was seen in 13 (76%) patients with GSD type I, in 3 (27%) with type III, and in 12 (55%) with types VI and IX. CGM showed hyperglycemia (10.2 ± 0.3 mmol/L) for 1 to 1.5 hours after a meal. Hypoglycemic episodes were registered at night time in 48 (94.1%) of children indicating the need for additional night feeding. Maximal total duration of low glucose levels was found in type I of the disease (10.2 ± 2.4 hours). Analysis of CGM results depending on GSD type showed that despite comparable glucose levels, more significant abnormalities are found in GSD type I (the proportion of hyperglycemic periods was 10.2 ± 2.3%, their duration 6.9 ± 1.8 hours; the proportion of hypoglycemic periods was 13.5 ± 2.6%, their duration 10.2 ± 2.4 hours, p < 0.05).Conclusion: The results obtained indicate the necessity to use CGM in all GSD patients to diagnose and prevent hypoglycemia that would be the basis to elaborate individual nutritional recommendations.

- Abstract
The development of bronchopleural fistula (BPS) against the background of advanced pleural empyema, as a result of severe pneumonia, is a formidable complication. The most significant obstacle in the surgical treatment of this group of patients is: a pronounced comorbid background, low functional indicators of patients, high requirements for surgical technique when performing reconstructive plastic interventions in BPS. Multiple surgical methods for treating bronchopleural fistulas are suggested. The first of these were to suture the defect. However, access through the infected pleural cavity leads to suture eruption and recurrence of the fistula, despite the fact that some authors have proposed combining these operations with various variants of myoplasty, thoracoplasty, removal of the fibrous capsule of empyema. Unsatisfactory functional and cosmetic outcomes during these surgical interventions led to the development of endoscopic, minimally invasive surgical interventions. Modern technologies allow temporary endoscopic bronchiococclusion, which stops the release of air from the defect. However, at the same time, she "turns off " part of the lung tissue from the gas exchange. Prolonged bronchial occlusion leads to the development of pneumonia with an outcome in the destruction of lung tissue. Our team of authors treatment of bronchopleural fistula with xenopericardium in combination with negative pressure therapy. This area seems to us very promising, and in this work we would like to share our first experience.

- Abstract
The article presents the experience of conducting the procedure for primary specialized accreditation in anesthesiology and resuscitation using a new methodology. The study involved 25 graduates of clinical residency. The methodology included expanding the list of assessed skills, increasing the number of stations to 6, adding new scenarios to existing stations. Also, for the first time, a randomization technique was applied to ensure a random selection of assessed skills and scenarios at the stations. Those accredited showed high marks on the used checklists. The modified methodology was evaluated by teachers, members of accreditation commissions, accredited as increasing the objectivity of the assessment, requiring only a little additional training. Based on the results of the study, it is planned to develop proposals for making changes to the current accreditation procedure for anesthesiology and resuscitation.

—Anomalous variations in radon emissions from the soil are sometimes observed before and after strong earthquakes. In this paper, we theoretically analyze the known hypothesis that these variations in radioactive emanations in the surface layer of the atmosphere cause variations in the vertical background current in the atmosphere with subsequent changes in the electron density $${{n}_{e}}$$ in the lower ionosphere. For this purpose, we will first assess the relation between radon emission variations and the vertical atmospheric current flowing into the ionosphere. Then we will solve a model problem concerning the spatial distribution of plasma density and electric field perturbations occurring in the E-layer of the ionosphere caused by an inflowing vertical current. It was believed that the current flowing into this layer contains only an electron component and is attenuated only by the recombination of electrons. The estimate of the maximum variation $${{n}_{e}}$$ is at least 3–5 orders of magnitude smaller than the observed anomalous variations, which allows us to conclude that this hypothesis is not plausible.

General Medicine - Abstract
Introduction. Hepatobiliary pathology (HBP) occurs in approximately 30% of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, the features of its course in the pediatric cohort of patients remain insufficiently studied. Purpose: to study the features of the course of autoimmune forms of HBD in children with IBD. Materials and methods. A comprehensive clinical, laboratory and instrumental examination was carried out in 84 children with autoimmune forms of HBP in combination with IBD (HBP+IBD), which made up the main group, and 79 patients with isolated forms of IBD included in the comparison group. Results. The prevalence of autoimmune HBP in IBD children was 10.2%. Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) was diagnosed in 64.3% of cases, which was mainly associated with ulcerative colitis. The incidence of autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) was 8.3%. In the structure of the overlap syndrome, the most frequent combination was AIH+PSC (15.5%). The debut of the disease was manifested by diarrhea, abdominal pain syndrome, cytolysis and cholestasis syndromes, haemicolitis. With HBP+IBD, there was an increase in serum concentrations of alanine (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferases (AST), total protein, γ-glutamyl transferase (GGT), alkaline phosphatase, direct bilirubin and IgG. Approximately with the same frequency in PSC, antibodies to saccharomycetes (ASCA) - 80% and antibodies to the cytoplasm of neutrophils (ANCA) - 75% were detected. In AIH, antinuclear antibodies (ANA) and antibodies to liver and kidney microsomes (anti-LKM1) were detected in 100%. HBP-IBD equally (28.6%) revealed moderate fibrosis and cirrhosis, no fibrosis in 20.6%, moderate fibrosis in 15.9% of cases, mild fibrosis in 6,3%. Cirrhosis of the liver in 55.6% of cases was the outcome of the course of PSC, in 16.7% - AIH, in 27.8% was associated with the course of the overlap syndrome. Conclusion. Various forms of autoimmune HBP occur in 10.2% of cases, are more often associated with UC, are represented by PSC and AIH, occur in males, at the onset signs are clinically presented by diarrhea, abdominal pain syndrome, cytolysis and cholestasis syndromes, and haemicolitis.
