Abstract

Vivekanandan The emergence of small, resource-constrained, and highly mobile computing platforms presents numerous challenges in developing and providing new services for users on the move. These challenges demand architectures and infrastructures that are scalable, reliable, secure and personalised. Recently, middleware has emerged as one of the key solutions for supporting next generation ubiquitous communication, and providing additional personalised services over and above those provided by existing networks. To this end, this paper presents the design of a community network-based middleware system for providing personalised information access to mobile users. The paper also discusses a prototype that has been implemented to validate and demonstrate the features of the middleware. Initial results regarding usability, flexibility, transcoding, memory efficiency and display rendering efficiency are discussed. Future work for the mobile middleware and research directions are outlined.

Abstract

Byline: Vijayan Sugumaran, Lee Rivers Mobley Decision Support Systems (DSS) are beginning to be used in the healthcare industry both in the practice of medicine, as well as policy analysis and decision-making. However, a typical DSS does not support spatial data that is crucial in analysing healthcare policy related issues. Spatial Information Management is gaining popularity and upper management in the healthcare industry is beginning to utilise the power and application of spatial modelling in decision support. A new breed of DSS called the Spatial Decision Support System (SDSS) is emerging, which supports spatial data and spatial modelling. This paper highlights the importance of spatial modelling with examples and presents an architecture for an SDSS and discusses its components. A prototype of the environment is under development using ArcView, SpaceStat, Jess and Visual Basic.

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to develop a multi-agent-based model for quantitatively measuring how the design change management strategies improve project performance. Design/methodology/approach: Based on questionnaires and interviews, this paper investigates the coordination mechanism of risks due to design changes in prefabricated construction (PC) projects. Combined with all the variables related with design change risks, a multi-agent-based simulation model is proposed to evaluate the design change management effect. Findings: The coordination mechanism between design change factors, design change events, risk consequence and management strategy in PC projects is described and then the simulation-based design change management mechanism in PC projects is used to assess the effect of management strategies under dynamic scenarios. Originality/value: PC projects have rapidly increased in recent years due to the advantages of fast construction, high quality and labor savings. Different from traditional on-site construction, the impact and risk from design changes are likely to be greater due to the prefabricated project being multi-stage, highly interactive and complex. The simulations presented in this paper make it possible to test different design change management strategies in order to study their effectiveness and support managerial decision making. Abstract

Technology advancement in social media software allows users to include elements of visual communication in textual settings. Emoticons are widely used as visual representations of emotion and body expressions. However, the assignment of values to the “emoticons” in current sentiment analysis tools is still at a very early stage. This paper presents our experiments in which we study the impact of positive and negative emoticons on the classifications by fifteen different sentiment tools. The “smiley” :) and the “sad” emoticon :( and raw-text are compared to verify the degrees of sentiment polarity levels. Questionnaires were used to collect human ratings of the positive and negative values of a set of sample comments that end with these emoticons. Our results show that emoticons used in sentences are able to reverse the polarity of their true sentiment values.

Abstract

We present an approach for computing intensional answers given a set of extensional answers returned as a result of a user query to an information system. Intensional answers are considered as descriptions of the actual answers in terms of properties they share and which can enhance a user's understanding of the answer itself but also of the underlying knowledge base. In our approach, an intensional answer is represented by a clause and computed based on Inductive Logic Programming (ILP) techniques, in particular bottom-up clause generalization. The approach is evaluated in terms of usefulness and time performance, and its potential for helping to detect flaws in the knowledge base is discussed. While the approach is used in the context of a natural language question answering system in our setting, it clearly has applications beyond.

Australian government enterprises have shown a significant interest in the cloud technology-enabled enterprise transformation. Australian government suggests the whole-of-a-government strategy to cloud adoption. The challenge is how best to realise this cloud adoption strategy for the cloud technology-enabled enterprise transformation? The cloud adoption strategy realisation requires concrete guidelines and a comprehensive practical framework. This paper proposes the use of an agile enterprise architecture framework to developing and implementing the adaptive cloud technology-enabled enterprise architecture in the Australian government context. The results of this paper indicate that a holistic strategic agile enterprise architecture approach seems appropriate to support the strategic whole-of-a-government approach to cloud technology-enabled government enterprise transformation.
