This study measured parameters automatically by marking the point for measuring each parameter on whole-spine radiographs. Between January 2020 and December 2021, 1017 sequential lateral whole-spine radiographs were retrospectively obtained. Of these, 819 and 198 were used for training and testing the performance of the landmark detection model, respectively. To objectively evaluate the program’s performance, 690 whole-spine radiographs from four other institutions were used for external validation. The combined dataset comprised radiographs from 857 female and 850 male patients (average age 42.2 ± 27.3 years; range 20–85 years). The landmark localizer showed the highest accuracy in identifying cervical landmarks (median error 1.5–2.4 mm), followed by lumbosacral landmarks (median error 2.1–3.0 mm). However, thoracic landmarks displayed larger localization errors (median 2.4–4.3 mm), indicating slightly reduced precision compared with the cervical and lumbosacral regions. The agreement between the deep learning model and two experts was good to excellent, with intraclass correlation coefficient values >0.88. The deep learning model also performed well on the external validation set. There were no statistical differences between datasets in all parameters, suggesting that the performance of the artificial intelligence model created was excellent. The proposed automatic alignment analysis system identified anatomical landmarks and positions of the spine with high precision and generated various radiograph imaging parameters that had a good correlation with manual measurements.

Rotundifuran (RF), a potent anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer compound, is a natural compound predominantly present in Vitex Rotundifolia. Herein, we investigated the effects of RF on the growth of lung cancer cells. Our findings suggested that RF inhibits cell growth, highlighting its potential as a therapeutic agent for cancer treatment. Interestingly, we observed that cell growth inhibition was not due to apoptosis, as caspases were not activated and DNA fragmentation did not occur. Furthermore, we found that intracellular vacuoles and autophagy were induced, but RF-induced cell death was not affected when autophagy was inhibited. This prompted us to investigate other possible mechanisms underlying cell growth inhibition. Through a cDNA chip analysis, we confirmed changes in the expression of ferroptosis-related genes and observed lipid peroxidation. We further examined the effect of ferroptosis inhibitors and found that they alleviated cell growth inhibition induced by RF. We also observed the involvement of calcium signaling, ROS accumulation, and JNK signaling in the induction of ferroptosis. Our findings suggested that RF is a potent anti-cancer drug and further studies are needed to validate its clinal use.

Enzalutamide (ENZ), marketed under the brand name Xtandi® as a soft capsule, is an androgen receptor signaling inhibitor drug actively used in clinical settings for treating prostate cancer. However, ENZ’s low solubility and bioavailability significantly hinder the achievement of optimal therapeutic outcomes. In previous studies, a liquid self-nanoemulsifying drug delivery system (L-SNEDDS) containing ENZ was developed among various solubilization technologies. However, powder formulations that included colloidal silica rapidly formed crystal nuclei in aqueous solutions, leading to a significant decrease in dissolution. Consequently, this study evaluated the efficacy of adding a polymer as a recrystallization inhibitor to a solid SNEDDS (S-SNEDDS) to maintain the drug in a stable, amorphous state in aqueous environments. Polymers were selected based on solubility tests, and the S-SNEDDS formulation was successfully produced via spray drying. The optimized S-SNEDDS formulation demonstrated through X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry data that it significantly reduced drug crystallinity and enhanced its dissolution rate in simulated gastric and intestinal fluid conditions. In an in vivo study, the bioavailability of orally administered formulations was increased compared to the free drug. Our results highlight the effectiveness of solid-SNEDDS formulations in enhancing the bioavailability of ENZ and outline the potential translational directions for oral drug development.

Background and Aims: Semen Analysis is the initial step in Assisted Reproduction Technology (ART) to help clinician decide the type of procedure such as Intra-Uterine Insemination (IUI), Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) or In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF). The few main sperm parameters analysed were concentration, motility and the total sperm count. In this study, we aim to compare the sperm parameters during the routine sperm analysis with that of during the day of procedure. Method: This study involved 110 patients from TMC Fertility Ipoh from year 2017 to 2023. Routine semen analysis was performed for all patients during their initial consultation, prior to ART procedure. Sperm parameters during the routine semen analysis were recorded and compiled under Group A. The same group of patients came back for their ART treatment within 1-3 months after the first semen analysis. Sperm parameters recorded on the procedural day were then compiled under Group B. Purpose: To evaluate the usefulness of ridge augmentation using a customized titanium mesh (CTM) that was preformed by trimming and bending the commercial titanium mesh on a virtually reconstructed 3D acrylic resin model using clinical, radiologic, histologic, and histomorphometric analyses. Materials and Methods: This study was designed prospectively for patients who required vertical ridge augmentation using a staged approach before implant surgery. After installation of the CTM, grafting was performed using deproteinized porcine bone mineral covered with an absorbable membrane. Computed tomography was performed preoperatively and 6 months after simultaneous/staged guided bone regeneration to measure planned, reconstructed, and lacking bone volume, and the reconstruction rate was calculated based on these values. Clinical complications were also recorded, particularly the mesh exposure rate. At re-entry, the bone core was obtained using a trephine bur, and histologic and histomorphometric analyses were performed. Results: A total of 10 sites in eight patients were used for the study analysis. The mean planned bone volume was 1.15 cm3 (range: 0.78 to 1.56 cm3), mean lacking bone volume was 0.13 cm3 (range: 0 to 0.59 cm3), and mean reconstructed bone volume was 1.02 cm3 (range: 0.56 to 1.43 cm3). The exposure rate was 30% (3 out of 10 sites). The reconstruction rate was over 80%, except for one case that showed suppuration. From histomorphometric analysis, 27.52% ± 16.87% of new bone, 7.62% ± 5.19% of residual graft, and 64.86% ± 23.76% of connective tissue were observed. The core biopsy samples demonstrated different pseudoperiosteum layer appearances based on the healing stage of the augmented sites. In the premature bone, the inner osteogenic layer consisted of multiple layers of osteoblast cells with adjacent large blood vessels. However, in the mature augmented site, there was no specific inner osteogenic layer, and the outer fibrous layer was dominant. Conclusions: The fabrication of CTM based on the application of the 3D-printing technique makes vertical ridge augmentation easier and can reduce complications and achieve target bone acquisition. Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is linked to a broad spectrum of diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, atherosclerosis, and even liver carcinoma. The ALD spectrum includes alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD), alcoholic hepatitis, and cirrhosis. Most recently, some reports demonstrated that the pathogenesis of ALD is strongly associated with metabolites of human microbiota. AFLD was the onset of disease among ALDs, the initial cause of which is alcohol consumption. Thus, we analyzed the significant metabolites of microbiota against AFLD via the network pharmacology concept. The metabolites from microbiota were retrieved by the gutMGene database; sequentially, AFLD targets were identified by public databases (DisGeNET, OMIM). The final targets were utilized for protein–protein interaction (PPI) networks and signaling pathway analyses. Then, we performed a molecular docking test (MDT) to verify the affinity between metabolite(s) and target(s) utilizing the Autodock 1.5.6 tool. From a holistic viewpoint, we integrated the relationships of microbiota-signaling pathways-targets-metabolites (MSTM) using the R Package. We identified the uppermost six key targets (TLR4, RELA, IL6, PPARG, COX-2, and CYP1A2) against AFLD. The PPI network analysis revealed that TLR4, RELA, IL6, PPARG, and COX-2 had equivalent degrees of value (4); however, CYP1A2 had no associations with the other targets. The bubble chart showed that the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway in nine signaling pathways might be the most significant mechanism with antagonistic functions in the treatment of AFLD. The MDT confirmed that Icaritin is a promising agent to bind stably to RELA (known as NF-Κb). In parallel, Bacterium MRG-PMF-1, the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, RELA, and Icaritin were the most significant components against AFLD in MSTM networks. In conclusion, we showed that the Icaritin–RELA complex on the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway by bacterial MRG-PMF-1 might have promising therapeutic effects against AFLD, providing crucial evidence for further research.

This research presents a novel hybrid path planning algorithm combining A*, ant colony optimization (ACO), and the dynamic window approach (DWA) to enhance energy efficiency in warehouse environments. The proposed algorithm leverages the heuristic capabilities of A*, the optimization strengths of ACO, and the dynamic adaptability of DWA. Experimental results demonstrate that the IACO+A*+DWA approach consistently outperforms other hybrid methods across various metrics. In complex warehouse scenarios, the IACO+A*+DWA algorithm achieved an average energy consumption of 89.8 J, which is 13.3% lower than ACO+A*+DWA, 6.6% lower than GA+A*+DWA, and 25.8% lower than PSO+A*+DWA. The algorithm produced a path length of 95.94 m with 43 turns, compared to 97.36 m with 46 turns for ACO+A*+DWA, 104.43 m with 50 turns for GA+A*+DWA, and 97.84 m with 56 turns for PSO+A*+DWA. Time to goal was 197.93 s, 1.5% faster than GA+A*+DWA. Statistical analysis using ANOVA confirmed the significant differences between the algorithms in terms of energy consumption, path length, number of turns, and time taken, demonstrating the superior performance of IACO+A*+DWA. These results indicate that the IACO+A*+DWA algorithm minimizes energy consumption and produces shorter and more efficient paths, making it highly suitable for real-time applications in dynamic and complex warehouse environments. In recent years, the field of drug delivery has witnessed remarkable progress, driven by the quest for more effective and precise therapeutic interventions. Among the myriad strategies employed, the integration of aptamers as targeting moieties and stimuli-responsive systems has emerged as a promising avenue, particularly in the context of anticancer therapy. This review explores cutting-edge advancements in targeted drug-delivery systems, focusing on the integration of aptamers and stimuli-responsive platforms for enhanced spatial anticancer therapy. In the aptamer-based drug-delivery systems, we delve into the versatile applications of aptamers, examining their conjugation with gold, silica, and carbon materials. The synergistic interplay between aptamers and these materials is discussed, emphasizing their potential in achieving precise and targeted drug delivery. Additionally, we explore stimuli-responsive drug-delivery systems with an emphasis on spatial anticancer therapy. Tumor microenvironment-responsive nanoparticles are elucidated, and their capacity to exploit the dynamic conditions within cancerous tissues for controlled drug release is detailed. External stimuli-responsive strategies, including ultrasound-mediated, photo-responsive, and magnetic-guided drug-delivery systems, are examined for their role in achieving synergistic anticancer effects. This review integrates diverse approaches in the quest for precision medicine, showcasing the potential of aptamers and stimuli-responsive systems to revolutionize drug-delivery strategies for enhanced anticancer therapy.

Smart lighting control systems represent an advanced approach to reducing energy use. These systems leverage advanced technology to provide users with better control over their lighting, allowing them to manually, remotely, and automatically modify the brightness, color, and timing of their lights. In this study, we aimed to enhance the energy efficiency of smart lighting systems by using light source data. A multifaceted approach was employed, involving the following three scenarios: sensing device, daylight data, and a combination of both. A low-cost sensor and third-party API were used for data collection, and a prototype application was developed for real-time monitoring. The results showed that combining sensor and daylight data effectively reduced energy consumption, and the rule-based algorithm further optimized energy usage. The prototype application provided real-time monitoring and actionable insights, thus contributing to overall energy optimization.

This study investigates the atmospheric interactions between two closely located typhoons in 2019. Typhoons in the Western Pacific significantly impact Eastern and Southeastern Asian countries, leading to various damages. As global warming is expected to increase typhoon intensity, accurate track forecasting becomes crucial for coastal disaster management. Despite the existing knowledge about the influence of typhoon activities on the atmospheric background, limited research addresses the atmospheric response between two typhoons. The study focuses on the cases of LEKIMA and KROSA, occurring simultaneously in 2019, and utilizes the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model for simulations. The experimental setup involves comparing two scenarios: one with both typhoons and one with LEKIMA removed. Results reveal LEKIMA-induced distinctive atmospheric responses, including the closure of the western North Pacific subtropical high (WNPSH) boundary and the formulation of a wave train, influencing KROSA’s stagnation. The absence of LEKIMA allows KROSA to move more freely along the steering flow. Furthermore, the study highlights the potential of atmospheric models for understanding typhoon effects at regional to mesoscale levels. A comprehensive analysis of similar cases could enhance typhoon predictions, contributing to better damage mitigation strategies.

Business relationship between Japan and Malaysia has developed very quickly in recent years. This has caused a dramatic increase in the need for individuals who possess language skills to function in Japanese businesses. In order to investigate the needs of our Malaysian graduates, a survey was conducted involving graduates of Japanese language minor program from a public university in Malaysia. The aims of the survey were to get an overall understanding of (1) the use of Japanese language at workplace where the Japanese language minor program's graduates are employed; (2) identify problems faced in language use and in terms of Japanese business practices in workplace. The results indicated that the graduates use Japanese language to communicate with the employees of their workplace compared to outsiders. The findings also highlight that Japanese language listening and speaking skills are the most important skills needed by the graduates for their workplace success compared to reading and writing.

Poly(glycerol sebacate) is a biocompatible elastomer that has gained increasing attention as a potential biomaterial for tissue engineering applications. In particular, PGS is capable of providing shape memory effects and allows for a free form, which can remember the original shape and obtain a temporary shape under melting point and then can recover its original shape at body temperature. Because these properties can easily produce customized shapes, PGS is being coupled with implants to offer improved fixation and maintenance of implants for fractures of osteoporosis bone. Herein, this study fabricated the OP implant with a PGS membrane and investigated the potential of this coupling. Material properties were characterized and compared with various PGS membranes to assess features such as control of curing temperature, curing time, and washing time. Based on the ISO 10993-5 standard, in vitro cell culture studies with C2C12 cells confirmed that the OP implant coupled with PGS membrane showed biocompatibility and biomechanical experiments indicated significantly increased pullout strength and maintenance. It is believed that this multifunctional OP implant will be useful for bone tissue engineering applications.

When solar panels reach end-of-life, the disposal of solar panel waste is an issue of concern because it creates environmental pollution if it is improperly disposed of. It is expected that such waste will probably be increasing as the widespread use of renewable energy is adopted by taking measures associated with carbon neutrality. Thus, accurate prediction of solar panel waste with future demands for renewable energy is urgently needed for sustainable waste management. This study examined the amounts of solar panels to be retried by 2050 under three scenarios (S1-BAU, S2, S3). The amounts of solar panels to be retired are estimated by using the PBM (population balance model) with the Weibull distribution. According to the carbon neutral scenario (S3), the total amounts of solar panels to be retired are anticipated to be around 172 kt in 2030, 932 kt in 2040, and 3146 kt in 2050. The total volume of retired solar panels was projected to be 168 kt in 2030, 820 kt in 2040, and 2331 kt in 2050 under the government-led scenario (S2). The average recovery of end-of-life solar panels produced by the three scenarios in 2050 is 1531 kt, 337 kt, 535 kt, and 22 kt for glass, aluminum, silicon, and copper, respectively. Economic benefits by resource recovery of retired solar panels in 2050 range from $25.6 million in S1 to $519.1 million in S3. Based on the sensitivity analysis with the weight of solar panel (5% and 10% reduction), the results indicated that the annual volumes of retired solar panels mostly fell within the range of 4.9% to 10.0% in 2050. To confirm the predicted volumes of retired solar panels in this study, a further study is warranted because they can be influenced by other factors (e.g., weight, technology development, early loss rate, or reuse and recycling options).

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease influenced by a complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors. The activation of the JAK-STAT pathway increases the expression of inflammatory cytokines such as IL-4 and IL-13, further deteriorating AD. Therefore, for the treatment of AD, the JAK-STAT pathway is emerging as a significant target, alongside inflammatory cytokines. This study investigates the potential therapeutic effects of a novel herbal complex, LK5, composed of Scutellaria baicalensis, Liriope platyphylla, Sophora flavescens, Dictammus dasycarpus, and Phellodendron schneider, known for their anti-inflammatory and immune-modulating properties. We examined the anti-inflammatory and anti-AD effects of the LK5 herbal complex in HaCaT cells stimulated by LPS and IL-4/IL-13, as well as in a mouse model of AD induced by DNCB. In HaCaT cells stimulated with LPS or IL-4/IL-13, the LK5 herbal complex demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting the expression of inflammatory cytokines including TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β, and downregulating the phosphorylation of STAT proteins. In a murine AD-like model induced by DNCB, administration of the LK5 herbal complex significantly ameliorated clinical symptoms, including dermatitis, ear thickness, and TEWL. Histological analysis revealed a reduction in epidermal thickness and mast cell infiltration. The LK5 herbal complex also inhibited pruritus induced by compound 48/80. Furthermore, the LK5 herbal complex treatment significantly decreased the levels of inflammatory cytokines such as TSLP, IL-6, and IgE in plasma and ear tissue of AD-induced mice. These findings suggest that the LK5 herbal complex may modulate the immune response and alleviate AD symptoms by inhibiting STAT pathways.

Esophagojejunal anastomosis (EJA) complications after total gastrectomy are related to significant morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between arterial calcifications and EJA complications such as leak and stricture for gastric cancer. Between January 2014 and October 2019, 30 patients with EJA complications after total gastrectomy were enrolled and matched to 30 patients without complications through retrospective data review. Arterial calcification grade on preoperative computed tomography (CT) was reported in the abdominal aorta and superior mesenteric artery (SMA) as “absent”, “minor”, or “major”, and in the jejunal vascular arcade (JVA) and left inferior phrenic artery (LIPA) as “absent” or “present”. A Chi-square test was used to compare the variables between the two groups. p-Value < 0.050 was considered statistically significant. Among 30 patients, the numbers of patients with leak and stricture were 23 and seven, respectively. Aortic calcifications were not associated with EJA complications regardless of their grade (p = 0.440). Only major SMA calcifications were associated with EJA complications, as they were present in five patients (16.7%) in the complication group and absent in the non-complication group (p = 0.020). Major SMA calcifications were more related to anastomotic stricture than leak. Three (13.0%) out of 23 patients with leak and two (28.6%) out of seven with stricture had major SMA calcifications (p = 0.028). No calcifications were detected in the JVA or LIPA in any of the 60 patients. Major SMA calcifications were found to be associated with EJA complications, especially in stricture.

Abstract Background Diagnostic cutoff points for sarcopenia in chest computed tomography (CT) have not been established although CT is widely used for investigating skeletal muscles. This study aimed to determine reference values for sarcopenia of thoracic skeletal muscles acquired from chest CT scans and to analyse variables related to sarcopenia using the cutoff values determined in a general Asian population. Methods We retrospectively reviewed chest CT scans of 4470 participants (mean age 54.8 ± 9.9 years, 65.8% male) performed at a check‐up centre in South Korea (January 2016–August 2017). To determine cutoffs, 335 participants aged 19–39 years (mean age 35.2 ± 3.6 years, 75.2% male) were selected as the healthy and younger reference group, and 4135 participants aged ≥40 years (mean age 56.4 ± 8.4 years, 65.1% male) were selected as the study group. We measured the following: cross‐sectional area (CSA) of the pectoralis, intercostalis, paraspinal, serratus, and latissimus muscles at the 4th vertebral region (T4CSA); T4CSA divided by height2 (T4MI); pectoralis muscle area (PMCSA); and PMCSA divided by height2 (PMI) at the 4th vertebral region. Sarcopenia cutoff was defined as sex‐specific values of less than −2 SD below the mean from the reference group. Results In the reference group, T4CSA, T4MI, PMCSA, and PMI cutoffs for sarcopenia were 100.06cm2, 33.69cm2/m2, 29.00cm2, and 10.17cm2/m2 in male, and 66.93cm2, 26.01cm2/m2, 18.29cm2, and 7.31cm2/m2 in female, respectively. Background: Tumor budding is considered a prognostic factor in several solid cancer types. However, we lack comprehensive information on the importance of tumor budding in cholangiocarcinoma. Therefore, we aimed to assess the prognostic value of tumor budding in intrahepatic and extrahepatic cholangiocarcinomas and to evaluate its correlations with other clinicopathological parameters.Methods: We monitored 219 patients who underwent surgery for intrahepatic or extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma at the Pusan National University Hospital between 2012 and 2021. Tumor budding was evaluated using the International Tumor Budding Consensus Conference scoring system. Tumor budding was classified into low (0–4), intermediate (5–9), and high (≥10). For statistical analysis, tumor budding was divided into two groups based on the cut-off value of 10 (lower: 0–9 vs. higher: ≥10). The correlations between clinicopathological parameters were examined using the chi-square and Fisher’s exact test. The prognostic values of the variables were analyzed using the log-rank test and Cox regression analysis.Results: Low, intermediate, and high tumor buddings were identified in 135 (61.6%), 63 (28.8), and 21 (9.6%), patients, respectively. Higher tumor budding was related to the presence of lymphatic invasion (p = 0.017), higher tumor grade (p = 0.001), higher N category (p = 0.034). In the univariable and multivariable analyses, higher tumor budding was associated with shorter disease-free survival in 97 (44.3%) patients who underwent R0 resection (p < 0.001 and p = 0.011). Tumor budding did not significantly correlate with disease-specific survival in entire patients.Conclusion: Tumor budding may serve as a prognostic factor for intrahepatic and extrahepatic cholangiocarcinomas treated with R0 resection.
