Search

We present optical and near-infrared photometry of 45 clusters of galaxies at 0.1 < z < 1.3. Galaxy catalogs in each cluster were defined at the longest wavelenth available, generally the K-band, down to approximately two magnitudes below M*. We include finding chart images of the band used for catalog definition. We present our discovery observations and analysis of RDCS1317+2911, z = 0.805, and RDCS1350+6007, z= 0.804, two clusters of galaxies identified through X-ray emission in the ROSAT Deep Cluster Survey (RDCS). We find a temperature of 3.7 +1.5 -0.9 keV and a bolometric luminosity of 8.2e43 +1.7e43 -1.6e43 erg/s for RDCS1317+2911, and a temperature of 4.9 +1.3 -0.9 keV and a bolometric luminosity of 4.1e44 +0.5e44 -0.4e44 erg/s for RDCS1350+6007. Our weak lensing analysis of RDCS1350+6007 confirms the general shape of the inner density profile but predicts twice the mass of the model based on the X-ray profile. We combine the X-ray luminosities and temperatures for RDCS clusters of galaxies with such measurements of other clusters at high redshift (z>0.7) and fit the luminosity-temperature relation. We find no statistically significant evolution in the slope or zero-point of this relation at a median of z=0.83. This result is in agreement with models of intracluster medium evolution with significant pre-heating or high initial entropy values. We discuss how low temperature, high redshift clusters of galaxies will allow us to improve on this result and announce the discovery of two such objects, CXOU J0910.1+5419 and CXOU J1316.9+2914., Comment: 33 pages, Latex 2e using the AASTEX v5 macros, with 13 figures. We present our first results on field X-ray sources detected in a deep, 184.7 ks observation with the ACIS-I camera on Chandra. The observations target the Lynx field of SPICES, and contains three known X-ray-emitting clusters out to z=1.27. Not including the known clusters, in the 17'x17' ACIS-I field we detect 132 sources in the 0.5-2 keV (soft) X-ray band down to a limiting flux of \~1.7e-16 erg/cm2/s and 111 sources in the 2-10 keV (hard) X-ray band down to a limiting flux of ~1.3e-15 erg/cm2/s. The combined catalog contains a total of 153 sources, of which 42 are detected only in the soft band and 21 are detected only in the hard band. Confirming previous Chandra results, we find that the fainter sources have harder X-ray spectra, providing a consistent solution to the long-standing `spectral paradox'. From deep optical and near-infrared follow-up data, 77% of the X-ray sources have optical counterparts to I=24 and 71% of the X-ray sources have near-infrared counterparts to K=20. Four of the 24 sources in the near-IR field are associated with extremely red objects (EROs; I-K>4). We have obtained spectroscopic redshifts with the Keck telescopes of 18 of the Lynx Chandra sources. These sources comprise a mix of broad-lined active galaxies, apparently normal galaxies, and two late-type Galactic dwarfs. Intriguingly, one Galactic source is identified with an M7 dwarf exhibiting non-transient, hard X-ray emission. We review non-AGN mechanisms to produce X-ray emission and discuss properties of the Lynx Chandra sample in relation to other samples of X-ray and non-X-ray sources., Comment: 42 pages, 16 figures. We present the results of sub-mm, mm (850 um, 450 um and 1250 um) and radio (1.4 and 4.8 GHz) continuum observations of a sample of 27 K-selected Extremely Red Objects, or EROs, (14 of which form a complete sample with K < 20 and I-K > 5) aimed at detecting dusty starbursts, deriving the fraction of UltraLuminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIGs) in ERO samples, and constraining their redshifts using the radio-FIR correlation. One ERO was tentatively detected at 1250 um and two were detected at 1.4 GHz, one of which has a less secure identification as an ERO counterpart. Limits on their redshifts and their star forming properties are derived and discussed. We stacked the observations of the undetected objects at 850 um, 1250 um and 4.8 GHz in order to search for possible statistical emission from the ERO population as a whole, but no significant detections were derived either for the whole sample or as a function of the average NIR colours. These results strongly suggest that the dominant population of EROs with K < 20 is not comprised of ULIGs like HR 10, but is probably made of radio-quiet ellipticals and weaker starburst galaxies with L < 10^{12} L_sun and SFR < 100 M_sun/yr., Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure, 3 tables; accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We report on observations of a TypeII quasar at redshift z=3.288, identified as a hard X-ray source in a 185 ks observation with the Chandra X-ray Observatory and as a high-redshift photometric candidate from deep, multiband optical imaging. CXOJ084837.9+445352 (hereinafter CXO52) shows an unusually hard X-ray spectrum from which we infer an absorbing column density N(H) = (4.8+/-2.1)e23 / cm2 (90% confidence) and an implied unabsorbed 2-10 keV rest-frame luminosity of L(2-10) = 3.3e44 ergs/s, well within the quasar regime. Hubble Space Telescope imaging shows CXO52 to be elongated with slight morphological differences between the WFPC2 F814W and NICMOS F160W bands. Optical and near-infrared spectroscopy of CXO52 show high-ionization emission lines with velocity widths ~1000 km/s and flux ratios similar to a Seyfert2 galaxy or radio galaxy. The latter are the only class of high-redshift TypeII luminous AGN which have been extensively studied to date. Unlike radio galaxies, however, CXO52 is radio quiet, remaining undetected at radio wavelengths to fairly deep limits, f(4.8GHz) < 40 microJy. High-redshift TypeII quasars, expected from unification models of active galaxies and long-thought necessary to explain the X-ray background, are poorly constrained observationally with few such systems known. We discuss recent observations of similar TypeII quasars and detail search techniques for such systems: namely (1) X-ray selection, (2) radio selection, (3) multi-color imaging selection, and (4) narrow-band imaging selection. Such studies are likely to begin identifying luminous, high-redshift TypeII systems in large numbers. We report the discovery of an X-ray luminous galaxy cluster at z =1.11. RDCS J0910+5422 was selected as an X-ray cluster candidate in the ROSAT Deep Cluster Survey on the basis of its spatial extent in a Rosat PSPC image. Deep optical and near-IR imaging reveal a red galaxy overdensity around the peak of the X-ray emission, with a significant excess of objects with J-K and I-K colors typical of elliptical galaxies at z ~ 1.0. Spectroscopic observations at the Keck II telescope secured 9 galaxy redshifts in the range 1.095=1.106. Eight of these galaxies lie within a 30 arcsec radius around the peak X-ray emission. A deep Chandra ACIS exposure on this field shows extended X-ray morphology and allows the X-ray spectrum of the intracluster medium to be measured. The cluster has a bolometric luminosity L_x = 2.48^{+0.33}_{-0.26} x 10^44 ergs/s, a temperature of kT = 7.2^{+2.2}_{-1.4} keV, and a mass within r = 1 Mpc of 7.0 x 10^14 M_sun (H_0=65 km/s/Mpc, Omega_m = 0.3, and Lambda = 0.7). The spatial distribution of the cluster members is elongated, which is not due to an observational selection effect, and followed by the X-ray morphology. The X-ray surface brightness profile and the spectrophotometric properties of the cluster members suggest that this is an example of a massive cluster in an advanced stage of formation with a hot ICM and an old galaxy population already in place at z > 1., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures: Figures 1,4,6 included as separate jpg files. We report the discovery of a rapidly rotating disk in a K-selected galaxy at z=1.34. Spatially resolved kinematics are determined from deep, moderate resolution Keck spectroscopy covering the redshifted [OII] 3727 line. A conservative estimate of the maximum rotation velocity V_max = 290 +- 20 km/s, placing the galaxy among the most rapid rotators known. An HST WFPC2 image taken in the F814W filter (rest-frame U) shows that the [OII] emission originates in a ring of star forming regions ~3'' (~20 kpc) across. In the K-band the galaxy is compact, and its position coincides with the center of the star forming ring seen in the rest-frame near-UV. The galaxy has M_V = -22.4 +- 0.2 (~3 L*) in the rest-frame, and its spectral energy distribution is very well fitted by that of a redshifted Sb/c galaxy. The observed kinematics, morphology, and spectral energy distribution are consistent with a massive bulge-disk system at z=1.34. The lower limit on V_max gives an upper limit on the offset from the present-day Tully-Fisher relation. The galaxy is overluminous by less than 0.7 +- 0.4 magnitudes in rest-frame V, consistent with previous studies of disk galaxies at lower redshift. Taken together, these results suggest that some of the most luminous spiral galaxies in the nearby Universe were already in place ~10^10 yr ago, placing a constraint on models for their formation., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We discuss our current progress in studying a sample of z>0.8 clusters of galaxies from the ROSAT Distant Cluster Survey. To date, we have Chandra observations for four of the ten clusters. We find that the morphology of two of these four are quite regular, with deviations from circular of less than 5%, while two are strikingly elliptical. When the temperatures and luminosities of our sample are grouped with six other high-redshift measurements, there is no measured evolution in the luminosity-temperature relation. We identify a number of X-ray emitting point sources that are potential cluster members. We analyze the ROSAT Deep Cluster Survey (RDCS) to derive cosmological constraints from the evolution of the cluster X-ray luminosity distribution. The sample contains 103 galaxy clusters out to z=0.85 and flux-limit Flim=3 10^{-14} cgs (RDCS-3) in the [0.5-2.0] keV energy band, with a high-z extension containing four clusters at 0.901 10^{-14} cgs (RDCS-1). Model predictions for the cluster mass function are converted into the X-ray luminosity function in two steps. First we convert mass into intra-cluster gas temperature by assuming hydrostatic equilibrium. Then temperature is converted into X-ray luminosity by using the most recent data on the Lx-T relation for nearby and distant clusters. These include the Chandra data for seven distant clusters at 0.57

We present a multi-wavelength study of RX J0848+4456, a cluster of galaxies discovered through X-ray emission in the ROSAT Deep Cluster Survey. Our observations consist of WFPC2 imaging, optical spectra, and X-ray data collected with the Chandra observatory. We find that RX J0848+4456 consists of an X-ray emitting cluster of galaxies at a redshift of z=0.570 and a group at slightly lower redshift, z=0.543, with little X-ray emission. This lower redshift system, however, is a gravitational lens, with the lensed galaxy an unusual AGN or star-forming system at z=3.356. The cluster has an X-ray temperature of kT = 3.6 +/- 0.4 keV, a bolometric luminosity of 1.0e44 +/- 0.3e44 erg/s and a velocity dispersion of 670 +/- 50 km/s. These values all agree with the low redshift correlations for clusters of galaxies, implying a relaxed system with the ICM in equilibrium with the dark matter potential. The lower redshift group of galaxies at z=0.543 has, at most 1/5, more likely 1/10, of the X-ray luminosity of RX J0848+4456. Despite being a gravitational lens, this is a low mass system, with an X-ray temperature of kT = 2.3 +0.5 -0.4 keV and a velocity dispersion of only 430 +/- 20 km/s. We present a study of the galaxy population in the cluster RXJ0848+4453 at z=1.27, using deep HST NICMOS and WFPC2 images. We morphologically classify all galaxies to K_s=20.6 that are covered by the HST imaging, and determine photometric redshifts using deep ground based BRIzJK_s photometry. Of 22 likely cluster members with morphological classifications, eleven (50%) are classified as early-type galaxies, nine (41%) as spiral galaxies, and two (9%) as ``merger/peculiar''. At HST resolution the second brightest cluster galaxy is resolved into a spectacular merger between three red galaxies of similar luminosity, separated from each other by ~6 kpc, with an integrated magnitude K=17.6 (~3 L* at z=1.27). The two most luminous early-type galaxies also show evidence for recent or ongoing interactions. Mergers and interactions between galaxies are possible because RXJ0848+4453 is not yet relaxed. The fraction of early-type galaxies in our sample is similar to that in clusters at 0.5

The Chandra X-ray Observatory was used to obtain a 190 ks image of three high redshift galaxy clusters in one observation. The results of our analysis of these data are reported for the two z > 1 clusters in this Lynx field, including the most distant known X-ray selected cluster. Spatially-extended X-ray emission was detected from both these clusters, indicating the presence of hot gas in their intracluster media. A fit to the X-ray spectrum of RX J0849+4452, at z=1.26, yields a temperature of kT = 5.8^{+2.8}_{-1.7} keV. Using this temperature and the assumption of an isothermal sphere, the total mass of RX J0849+4452 is found to be 4.0^{+2.4}_{-1.9} X 10^{14} h_{65}^{-1} M_{\sun} within r = 1 h_{65}^{-1} Mpc. The T_x for RX J0849+4452 approximately agrees with the expectation based on its L_{bol} = 3.3^{+0.9}_{-0.5} X 10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1} according to the low redshift L_x - T_x relation. The very different distributions of X-ray emitting gas and of the red member galaxies in the two z > 1 clusters, in contrast to the similarity of the optical/IR colors of those galaxies, suggests that the early-type galaxies mostly formed before their host clusters., Comment: 4 pages in emulateapj style plus 2 color jpegs for Figure 3. We present first results from SPICES, the Spectroscopic, Photometric, Infrared-Chosen Extragalactic Survey. SPICES is comprised of four ~30 square arcminute high Galactic latitude fields with deep BRIzJK imaging reaching depths of ~25th magnitude (AB) in the optical and ~23rd magnitude (AB) in the near-infrared. To date we have 626 spectroscopic redshifts for infrared-selected SPICES sources with K<20 (Vega). The project is poised to address galaxy formation and evolution to redshift z~2. We discuss initial results from the survey, including the surface density of extremely red objects and the fraction of infrared sources at z>1. One of the SPICES fields has been the target of a deep 190 ksec Chandra exposure; we discuss initial results from analysis of that data set. The identification of galaxies at extreme distances provides our most direct information on the earliest phases of galaxy formation. The distance implied by redshifts z > 5 makes this a challenging endeavor for even the most luminous sources; interpretation of low signal-to-noise ratio observations of faint galaxies is difficult and occasional misidentifications will occur. Here we report on STIS 123627+621755, a galaxy with a suggested spectroscopic redshift of z = 6.68 and the most distant spectroscopically-identified object claimed. For the suggested redshift and reported spectral energy distribution, the galaxy should be essentially invisible shortward of 9300 Angstroms because the intervening intergalactic medium absorbs essentially all light energetic enough to ionize neutral hydrogen (lambda < (1 + z) x 912 Angstroms; the redshifted Lyman limit). The galaxy should be relatively bright in the near-infrared with f(nu) ~ 1 microJy. Here we report a detection of the galaxy at 6700 Angstroms, below the Lyman limit for z = 6.68. We also report a non-detection at 1.2 microns, implying the flux has dropped by a factor of three or more between rest 1216 Angstroms and rest 1560 Angstroms for z = 6.68. We present a new sample of distant ultraluminous infrared galaxies. The sample was selected from a positional cross--correlation of the IRAS Faint Source Catalog with the FIRST database. Objects from this set were selected for spectroscopy by virtue of following the well-known star-forming galaxy correlation between 1.4 GHz and 60 micron flux, and by being optically faint on the POSS. Optical identification and spectroscopy were obtained for 108 targets at the Lick Observatory 3m telescope. Most objects show spectra typical of starburst galaxies, and do not show the high ionization lines of active galactic nuclei. The redshift distribution covers 0.1 < z < 0.9, with 13 objects at z > 0.5 and an average redshift of 0.31. K-band images were obtained at the IRTF, Lick, and Keck observatories in sub-arcsec seeing of all optically identified targets. About 2/3 of the objects appear to be interacting galaxies, while the other 1/3 appear to be normal. Nearly all the identified objects have far-IR luminosities greater than 10^11 L_sun, and ~25% have L_FIR > 10^12 L_sun., Comment: 22 pages. Figures 1,2,4 and 5 included in-line, figure 3 as 54 gifs. Recent results on the incidence of red galaxies in a > 100 square arcminute field galaxy survey to K=20 and a K=22 survey of the Hubble Deep Field are presented. We argue that a simple photometric redshift indicator, based on J-K color and supported by spectroscopic results obtained with Keck, gives a reliable lower limit of ~25% for the fraction of z>1 galaxies in the 100 square arcminute survey. This fraction is substantially higher than found in previous smaller samples, and is at least as consistent with predictions for pure luminosity evolution as with those for hierarchical models. We present observations of RD J030117+002025, a quasar at z=5.50 discovered from deep, multi-color, ground-based observations covering 74 square arcmin. This is the most distant quasar or AGN currently known. The object was targeted as an R-band dropout, with R(AB)>26.3 (3-sigma limit in a 3 arcsec diameter region), I(AB)=23.8, and z(AB)=23.4. The Keck/LRIS spectrum shows broad Lyman-alpha/NV emission and sharp absorption decrements from the highly-redshifted hydrogen forests. The fractional continuum depression due to the Lyman-alpha forest is D(A)=0.90. We briefly review our current knowledge of the space density of distant X-ray clusters as measured by several ROSAT serendipitous surveys. We compare old and new determinations of the cluster X-ray Luminosity Function (XLF) at increasing redshifts, addressing the controversial issue of the evolution of its high end. We use complete subsamples, drawn from the ROSAT Deep Cluster Survey (RDCS), to quantify the statistical significance of the XLF evolution out to z ~1. A consistent observational picture emerges in which the bulk of the cluster population shows no significant evolution out to z ~1, whereas the most luminous systems (L_x >~ L* [0.5-2 keV] =~ 5x10^44 erg/s) were indeed rarer, at least at z >0.5, in keeping with the original findings of the EMSS. We also report on the recent spectroscopic identification of four clusters in the RDCS lying beyond z =1, the most distant X-ray clusters known to date, which set an interesting lower limit on the space density of clusters at z >1., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures. We have obtained near-infrared (1.6 micron) images of 11 powerful 3CR radio galaxies at redshifts 0.8 < z < 1.8 using NICMOS on board HST. The high angular resolution permits a detailed study of galaxy morphology in these systems at rest-frame optical wavelengths, where starlight dominates over the extended, aligned UV continuum. The NICMOS morphologies are mostly symmetric and are consistent with dynamically relaxed, elliptical host galaxies dominated by a red, mature stellar population. The aligned structures are sometimes faintly visible, and nuclear point sources may be present in a few cases which manifest the ``unveiled'' AGN that is obscured from view at optical wavelengths. Our observations are consistent with the hypothesis that the host galaxies of z ~ 1-2 radio galaxies are similar to modern-day gE galaxies. We present optical, infrared and radio data of the z=4.11 radio galaxy TN J1338-1942, including an intermediate resolution spectrum obtained with FORS1on the VLT Antu telescope. TN J1338-1942 was the first z>4 radio galaxy to be discovered in the southern hemisphere and is one of the most luminous Ly-alpha objects in its class. The Ly-alpha and rest-frame optical emission appear co-spatial with the brightest radio hotspot of this very asymmetric radio source, suggesting extremely strong interaction with dense ambient clouds. The VLT observations are sufficiently sensitive to detect the continuum flux both blue-ward and red-ward of the Ly-alpha emission, allowing us to measure the Ly-alpha forest continuum break (Ly-alpha 'discontinuity', D_A) and the Lyman limit. We measure a D_A=0.37+-0.1, which is ~0.2 lower than the values found for quasars at this redshift. We interpret this difference as possibly due to a bias towards large D_A introduced in high--redshift quasar samples that are selected on the basis of specific optical colors. If such a bias would exist in optically selected quasars, - and even in samples of Lyman break galaxies -, then the space density of both classes of object will be underestimated. Furthermore, the average HI column density along cosmological lines of sight as determined using quasar absorption lines would be overestimated. Because of their radio-based selection, we argue that z>4 radio galaxies are excellent objects for investigating D_A statistics. [abridged], Comment: 6 Pages, including 4 PostScript figures. We describe an object in the Hubble Deep Field North with very unusual near-infrared properties. It is readily visible in Hubble Space Telescope NICMOS images at 1.6um and from the ground at 2.2um, but is undetected (with signal-to-noise <~ 2) in very deep WFPC2 and NICMOS data from 0.3 to 1.1um. The f_nu flux density drops by a factor >~ 8.3 (97.7% confidence) from 1.6 to 1.1um. The object is compact but may be slightly resolved in the NICMOS 1.6um image. In a low-resolution, near-infrared spectrogram, we find a possible emission line at 1.643um, but a reobservation at higher spectral resolution failed to confirm the line, leaving its reality in doubt. We consider various hypotheses for the nature of this object. Its colors are unlike those of known galactic stars, except perhaps the most extreme carbon stars or Mira variables with thick circumstellar dust shells. It does not appear to be possible to explain its spectral energy distribution as that of a normal galaxy at any redshift without additional opacity from either dust or intergalactic neutral hydrogen. The colors can be matched by those of a dusty galaxy at z >~ 2, by a maximally old elliptical galaxy at z >~ 3 (perhaps with some additional reddening), or by an object at z >~ 10 whose optical and 1.1um light have been suppressed by the intergalactic medium. Under the latter hypothesis, if the luminosity results from stars and not an AGN, the object would resemble a classical, unobscured protogalaxy, with a star formation rate >~ 100 M_sun/yr. We report the discovery of a spectacular ``post-starburst quasar'' UN J1025-0040 (B=19; z=0.634). The optical spectrum is a chimera, displaying the broad Mg II emission line and strong blue continuum characteristic of quasars, but is dominated in the red by a large Balmer jump and prominent high-order Balmer absorption lines indicative of a substantial young stellar population at similar redshift. Stellar synthesis population models show that the stellar component is consistent with a 400 Myr old instantaneous starburst with a mass of less than or about 10^{11} solar masses. A deep, K_s-band image taken in 0.5 arcsec seeing shows a point source surrounded by asymmetric extended fuzz. Approximately 70% of the light is unresolved, the majority of which is expected to be emitted by the starburst. Cosmic gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been firmly established as one of the most powerful phenomena in the Universe, releasing electromagnetic energy approaching the rest-mass energy of a neutron star in a few seconds. The two currently popular models for GRB progenitors are the coalescence of two compact objects (such as neutron stars or black holes) or collapse of a massive star. An unavoidable consequence of the latter model is that a bright supernovae should accompany the GRB. The emission from this supernova competes with the much brighter afterglow produced by the relativistic shock that gives rise to the GRB itself. Here we present evidence for an unusual light curve for GRB 980326 based on new optical observations. The transient brightened ~3 weeks after the burst to a flux sixty times larger than that extrapolated from the rapid decay seen at early time. Furthermore, the spectrum changed dramatically and became extremely red. We argue that the new source is the underlying supernova. If our hypothesis is true then this would be the first evidence for a supernova connection with GRBs at cosmological distances. We present $K$-band luminosity functions for galaxies in a heterogeneous sample of 38 clusters at $0.1 < z < 1$. Using infrared-selected galaxy samples which generally reach 2 magnitudes fainter than the characteristic galaxy luminosity $L^*$, we fit Schechter functions to background-corrected cluster galaxy counts to determine $K^*$ as a function of redshift. Because of the magnitude limit of our data, the faint-end slope $\alpha$ is fixed at -0.9 in the fitting process. We find that $K^*(z)$ departs from no-evolution predictions at $z > 0.4$, and is consistent with the behavior of a simple, passive luminosity evolution model in which galaxies form all their stars in a single burst at $z_f = 2 (3)$ in an $H_0 = 65 km/s Mpc^{-1}, \Omega_M = 0.3, \Omega_{\Lambda}=0.7 (0)$ universe. This differs from the flat or negative infrared luminosity evolution which has been reported for high redshift field galaxy samples. We find that the observed evolution appears to be insensitive to cluster X-ray luminosity or optical richness, implying little variation in the evolutionary history of galaxies over the range of environmental densities spanned by our cluster sample. These results support and extend previous analyses based on the color evolution of high redshift cluster E/S0 galaxies, indicating not only that their stellar populations formed at high redshift, but that the assembly of the galaxies themselves was largely complete by $z \approx 1$, and that subsequent evolution down to the present epoch was primarily passive., Comment: 35 pages, 10 figures; accepted by the Astronomical Journal (August 1999 issue)

We report the discovery of the most distant known AGN, the radio galaxy TN J0924-2201 at z = 5.19. The radio source was selected from a new sample of ultra-steep spectrum (USS) sources, has an extreme radio spectral index alpha_365MHz^1.4GHz = -1.63, and is identified at near-IR wavelengths with a very faint, K = 21.3 +- 0.3 object. Spectroscopic observations show a single emission line at lambda ~ 7530A, which we identify as Ly-alpha. The K-band image, sampling rest frame U-band, shows a multi-component, radio-aligned morphology, typical of lower-redshift radio galaxies. TN J0924-2201 extends the near-IR Hubble, or K-z, relation for powerful radio galaxies to z > 5, and is consistent with models of massive galaxies forming at even higher redshifts., Comment: 11 Pages, including 3 PostScript figures. We report the discovery of an X-ray luminous galaxy cluster at z=1.26. RXJ0848.9+4452 was selected as an X-ray cluster candidate in the ROSAT Deep Cluster Survey, on the basis of its spatial extent. Deep optical and near-IR imaging have revealed a galaxy overdensity around the peak of the X-ray emission, with a significant excess of red objects with J-K colors typical of elliptical galaxies at z>1. Spectroscopic observations at the Keck II telescope have secured 6 galaxy redshifts in the range 1.257=1.261), within a 35 arcsec radius around the peak X-ray emission. This system lies only 4.2 arcmin away (5.0 h^{-1}_{50} comoving Mpc, q_0=0.5) from the galaxy cluster ClG J0848+4453, which was identified by Stanford et al. (1997) at z=1.273 in a near-IR field galaxy survey, and is also known to be X-ray luminous. Assuming that the X-ray emission is entirely due to hot intra-cluster gas, both these systems have similar rest frame luminosities L_x ~=1x10^{44} ergs/s (0.5-2.0 keV band). We report the discovery of a small separation quasar pair (z=0.586, O=18.4, 19.2, sep. = 2.3 arcsec) associated with the radio source FIRST J164311.3+315618 (S_1400 = 120 mJy). The spectrum of the brighter quasar (A) has a much stronger narrow emission-line spectrum than the other (B), and also stronger Balmer lines relative to the continuum. The continuum ratio of the spectra is flat in the blue at about 2.1, but falls to 1.5 at longer wavelengths. A K' image shows two unresolved sources with a flux ratio of 1.3. The different colors appear to result from the contribution of the host galaxy of B, which is evident from Ca II and high-order Balmer absorption lines indicative of a substantial young stellar population. New 3.6 cm VLA observations show that the compact radio source is coincident with quasar A (B is only marginally detected). We rule out the lensing hypothesis because the optical flux ratio is A/B = 1.2 to 2, while the radio flux ratio is A/B > 40, and conclude that this system is a binary. Moreover, the radio-loud quasar is a compact steep spectrum source. We have carried out a spectropolarimetric search for hidden broad-line quasars in three ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) discovered in the positional correlations between sources detected in deep radio surveys and the IRAS Faint Source Catalog. Only the high-ionization Seyfert 2 galaxy TF J1736+1122 is highly polarized, displaying a broad-line spectrum visible in polarized light. The other two objects, TF J1020+6436 and FF J1614+3234, display spectra dominated by a population of young (A-type) stars similar to those of ``E + A'' galaxies. They are unpolarized, showing no sign of hidden broad-line regions. The presence of young starburst components in all three galaxies indicates that the ULIRG phenomenon encompasses both AGN and starburst activity, but the most energetic ULIRGs do not necessarily harbor ``buried quasars''. We find that a luminous infrared galaxy is most likely to host an obscured quasar if it exhibits a high-ionization ([O III] 5007/Hb >~ 5) spectrum typical of a ``classic'' Seyfert 2 galaxy with little or no Balmer absorption lines, is ``ultraluminous'' (L_IR >~ 10^12 L_sun), and has a ``warm'' IR color (f_25/f_60 >~ 0.25). The detection of hidden quasars in this group but not in the low-ionization, starburst-dominated ULIRGs (classified as LINERs or H II galaxies) may indicate an evolutionary connection, with the latter being found in younger systems., Comment: 30 pages, including 3 tables and 8 figs, to be published in the Astrophysical Journal

Many ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) are powered by quasars hidden in the center, but many are also powered by starbursts. We present Faint Object Camera (FOC) ultraviolet images of the central 14x14'' of Messier 31 and Messier 32. The hot stellar population detected in the composite UV spectra of these nearby galaxies is partially resolved into individual stars, and their individual colors and apparent magnitudes are measured. We detect 433 stars in M 31 and 138 stars in M 32, down to detection limits of m_F275W = 25.5 mag and m_F175W = 24.5 mag. We investigate the luminosity functions of the sources, their spatial distribution, their color-magnitude diagrams, and their total integrated far-UV flux. Although M 32 has a weaker UV upturn than M 31, the luminosity functions and color-magnitude diagrams of M 31 and M 32 are surprisingly similar, and are inconsistent with a majority contribution from any of the following: PAGB stars more massive than 0.56 Msun, main sequence stars, or blue stragglers. Both the the luminosity functions and color-magnitude diagrams are consistent with a dominant population of stars that have evolved from the extreme horizontal branch (EHB) along tracks with masses between 0.47 and 0.53 Msun. These stars are well below the detection limits of our images while on the zero-age EHB, but become detectable while in the more luminous (but shorter) AGB-Manque' and post-early asymptotic giant branch (PEAGB) phases. The FOC observations require that only a only a very small fraction of the main sequence population (2% in M 31 and 0.5% in M 32) in these two galaxies evolve though the EHB and post-EHB phases, with the remainder evolving through bright PAGB evolution that is so rapid that few if any stars are expected in the small field of view covered by the FOC., Comment: 35 pages, Latex. 19 figures. We present deep near-IR images of high redshift radio galaxies obtained with NIRC on the Keck I telescope. In most cases, the near-IR data sample rest wavelengths at ~4000 Angstroms, free of strong emission lines. At z > 3, the rest frame optical morphologies generally have faint, large-scale emission surrounding multiple components of ~10 kpc size. The brightest of the small knots are often aligned with the radio structures. At z < 3, the morphologies change dramatically, showing single, compact structures without radio-aligned features. The sizes and luminosities of the individual components in the z > 3 radio galaxies are similar to those of the radio-quiet star-forming galaxies discovered at z ~ 3 by the Lyman dropout technique. The rest frame optical colors of the z > 3 radio galaxies are consistent with models in which recent star formation dominates the observed IR light, and in one case (4C 41.17) we have direct spectroscopic evidence for massive star formation (Dey et al. 1997a). Our results suggest that the z > 3 radio galaxies evolve into very massive elliptical galaxies at 2 < z < 3, in qualitative agreement with the hierarchical model of galaxy formation. We report the discovery of a galaxy cluster at z=1.27. ClG J0848+4453 was found in a near-IR field survey as a high density region of objects with very red J-K colors. Optical spectroscopy of a limited number of 24 < R < 25 objects in the area shows that 6 galaxies within a 90 arcsec (0.49/h Mpc, q_O = 0.1) diameter region lie at z=1.273 +/- 0.002. Most of these 6 member galaxies have broad-band colors consistent with the expected spectral energy distribution of a passively-evolving elliptical galaxy formed at high redshift. An additional 2 galaxies located ~2 arcmin from the cluster center are also at z=1.27. Using all 8 of these spectroscopic members, we estimate the velocity dispersion is 700 +/- 180 km/s, similar to that of Abell R=1 clusters in the present epoch. A deep Rosat PSPC observation detects X-ray emission at the 5 sigma level coincident with the nominal cluster center. Assuming that the X-ray flux is emitted by hot gas trapped in the potential well of a collapsed system (no AGN is known to exist in the area), the resulting X-ray luminosity in the rest frame 0.1-2.4 keV band of L_x = 1.5 x 10^44 ergs/s suggests the presence of a moderately large mass. We present results from an optical-IR photometric study of early-type galaxies in 19 galaxy clusters out to z=0.9. The galaxy sample is selected on the basis of morphologies determined from HST WFPC2 images, and is photometrically defined in the K-band to minimize redshift-dependent selection biases. The optical-IR colors of the early-type cluster galaxies become bluer with increasing redshift in a manner consistent with the passive evolution of an old stellar population formed at an early cosmic epoch. The degree of color evolution is similar for clusters at similar redshift, and does not depend strongly on the optical richness or X-ray luminosity of the cluster, suggesting that the history of early-type galaxies is relatively insensitive to environment. The slope of the color-magnitude relationship shows no significant change out to z=0.9, providing evidence that it arises from a correlation between galaxy mass and metallicity, not age. Finally, the intrinsic scatter in the optical-IR colors is small and nearly constant with redshift, indicating that the majority of giant, early-type galaxies in clusters share a common star formation history, with little perturbation due to uncorrelated episodes of later star formation. Taken together, our results are consistent with models in which most early-type galaxies in rich clusters are old, formed the majority of their stars at high redshift in a well-synchronized fashion, and evolved quiescently thereafter., Comment: 55 pages, 24 figures, uses AASTeX. We present UV images of M 31 and M 32, as observed by HST with the refurbished FOC. The galaxies were observed through the F175W and F275W filters, allowing the construction of color magnitude diagrams (CMDs) for the hundreds of detected sources found in each image. Comparison of these data with the stellar evolutionary tracks of horizontal branch stars and their progeny shows that for the first time outside of our own Galaxy, we may be measuring the colors of individual stars that are evolving along post asymptotic giant branch (PAGB), post-early AGB, and AGB-Manque' paths. Searching to the 6 sigma detection limit, we find 1349 stars in M 31 and 183 stars in M 32. Wide-field optical and near--IR ($JHK$) imaging is presented for two rich galaxy clusters: Abell~370 at $z=0.374$ and Abell~851 (Cl0939+47) at $z=0.407$. Galaxy catalogs selected from the near--IR images are 90\% complete to approximately 1.5 mag below $K^\ast$ resulting in samples with $\sim$100 probable member galaxies per cluster in the central $\sim$2 Mpc. Comparison with $HST$ WFPC images yields subsamples of $\sim$70 galaxies in each cluster with morphological types. Analysis of the complete samples and the $HST$ subsamples shows that the $z\sim 0.4$ E/S0s are bluer than those in the Bower et al.\ (1992) Coma sample in the optical$-K$ color by $0.13$~mag for Abell~370 and by $0.18$~mag for Abell~851. If real, the bluing of the E/S0 populations at moderate redshift is consistent with that calculated from the Bruzual and Charlot (1993) models of passive elliptical galaxy evolution. In both clusters the intrinsic scatter of the known E/S0s about their optical$-K$ color--mag relation is small ($\sim 0.06$ mag) and not significantly different from that of Coma E/S0s as given by Bower et al.\ (1992), indicating that the galaxies within each cluster formed at the same time at an early epoch., Comment: uuencoded gzipped tar file containing latex files of manuscript (42 pages) plus tables (9 pages); figures available by anonymous ftp at ftp://ipac.caltech.edu//pub/pickup/sed ; accepted for publication in the ApJ
