Background: AHRR and F2RL3 hypomethylation has been associated with lung cancer. In this study, we investigated the cross-sectional association between smoking and occupational exposures, and AHRR and F2RL3 methylation. Methods: A case-control study was nested in CARTaGENE to examine the association between AHRR and F2RL3 methylation and lung cancer risk (200 cases; 400 controls). A secondary analysis was conducted using the data collected from this nested study; namely, baseline information on participants' smoking behavior and longest-held job was obtained. A cumulative smoking index summarized information on the number of cigarettes smoked, duration of smoking, and time since cessation. Exposure to 13 occupational agents was estimated using the Canadian Job Exposure Matrix. In baseline blood samples, methylation ratios of 40 CpG sites in the AHRR and F2RL3 genes were measured using Sequenom EpiTYPER. Separate least squares regression models were used to estimate the associations between smoking and occupational exposures, and average AHRR and F2RL3 methylation levels, while adjusting for confounders identified from directed acyclic graphs. Results: In both genes, smoking was associated with lower average methylation levels. Occupational exposure to aromatic amines, cadmium, and formaldehyde were associated with lower AHRR methylation while, only benzene was associated with F2RL3 hypomethylation; these associations were stronger among ever smokers. Conclusions: Our findings support that smoking and occupational exposures to some agents are associated with AHRR and F2RL3 hypomethylation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An interview with Pierre Bibeau, one of the founders of the archaeology firm Arkéos, and Réginald Auger, a former professor of historical archaeology at Laval University is presented. They discuss their careers and the broader practice of archaeology. They reflect on their education, early influences, and significant projects that shaped their professional journeys.

Many coaches have been called instinctive for decisions they have made, whether in game situations, recruiting, or other aspects of their job. Coaches often report having "gut feelings" before making important decisions. The purpose of this article is to dispel the notion of intuition as a magical ability, and begin to look at it as an important decision-making tool that can be cultivated. Through education and deliberate practice, coaches can become more intuitive.

A total of 330 members of the American Counseling Association were surveyed to determine current group training models in counselor education. The results indicate: (1) the most common model is to have a full-time faculty member both instruct the group work course and facilitate the experiential group, (2) ethical concerns do negatively impact student involvement in the experiential group, and (3) a contributing factor to students feeling comfortable in the group experience was the belief that the instructor was competent. Implications and recommendations based upon these findings are suggested, as well as student-generated recommendations on how to implement the experiential group.

The research reported here assessed the financial literacy of older adults living in rural communities, current use of and attitudes towards debt, and debt pressures. Those surveyed exhibit low credit card usage and responsible payment practices. Most never use credit to pay medical expenses. Respondents display a financial literacy level similar to the Jump$tart Coalition's 2008 college sample. While the financial situations and well-being for most are positive, those with financial pressures face some negative outcomes. Increasing financial literacy and teaching basic budgeting to a targeted segment of older adults have the potential to increase well-being and family relationships.

The mechanical properties of the aorta are influenced by the extracellular matrix, a network mainly comprised of fibers and glycosaminoglycans (GAG). In this work, we demonstrate that GAG contribute to the opening angle (a marker of circumferential residual stresses) in intact and glycated aortic tissue. Enzymatic GAG depletion was associated with a decrease in the opening angle, by approximately 25% (p = 0.009) in the ascending (AS) region, 32% (p = 0.003) in the aortic arch (AR), and 42% (p = 0.001) in the lower descending thoracic (LDT) region. A similar effect of GAG depletion on aortic ring opening angle was also observed in previously glycated tissues. Using indentation testing, we found that the radial compressive stiffness significantly increased in the AS region following GAG depletion, compared to fresh (p = 0.006) and control samples (p = 0.021), and that the compressive properties are heterogeneous along the aortic tree. A small loss of water content was also detected after GAG depletion, which was most prominent under hypotonic conditions. Finally, the AS region was also associated with a significant loss of compressive deformation (circumferential stretch that is < 1) in the inner layer of the aorta following GAG depletion, suggesting that GAG interact with ECM fibers in their effect on aortic mechanics. The importance of this work lies in its identification of the role of GAG in modulating the mechanical properties of the aorta, namely the circumferential residual stresses and the radial compressive stiffness, as well as contributing to the swelling state and the level of circumferential prestretch in the tissue. The mechanical properties of the aorta are influenced by the composition and organization of its extracellular matrix (ECM) and are highly relevant to medical conditions affecting the structural integrity of the aorta. The extent of contribution of glycosaminoglycans (GAG), a relatively minor ECM component, to the mechanical properties of the aorta, remains poorly characterized. This works shows that GAG contribute on average 30% to the opening angle (an indicator of circumferential residual stresses) of porcine aortas, and that GAG-depletion is associated with an increased radial compressive stiffness of the aorta. GAG-depletion was also associated with a loss of water content and compressive deformation in the inner layers of the aortic wall providing insight into potential mechanisms for their biomechanical role. States are recognizing the need for personal financial education and have begun requiring it as a condition for high school graduation. Responding to teacher requests to help them meet state-mandated financial education requirements, FCS educators in the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service developed a financial education tool kit. This article describes the contents of the tool kit and its many uses.

During the first decade of the twenty-first century, neopositivist claims made about the nature and validity of knowledge in the debates about scientifically based research were countered by educators who, decades earlier, had made various turns away from positivism and were surprised by its resurgence. In those debates, positivists often used "postmodernism" as a code word for any social science approach that was not positivist and so, they claimed, could not be scientific. To remind us of the nature of positivism and the limits of the knowledge it enables, this paper reviews its assumptions and then returns to Lyotard's 1979 cogent critique, paralogy that describes postmodern knowledge that moves toward the unknown by engaging undecidables, paradox, incomplete information and catastrophes.

This study examined outcomes with 170 children and youth admitted to residential treatment with complex mental health problems. Overall, outcomes at 2 years post-treatment was predicted by children and youth's behavioral pretreatment status reflected in lower internalizing and externalizing behavior at admission. These findings recognize a cluster of variables upon admission that are differentially predictive of specific outcomes. Higher school participation/achievement and an absence of witnessing interparental abuse predicted educational status. Family status was predicted at admission by higher family functioning, being younger in the family, and children and youth who had poor community behavior. The results are discussed as they relate to pretreatment screening and the need to evaluate service outcomes. (Contains 4 tables.)

Residential treatment is arguably the most costly and intensive part of the children's mental health system. Yet, research suggests that a subset of the emotionally disordered children and youth admitted to intensive tertiary care treatment facilities fail to demonstrate symptom reductions upon discharge, with many continuing to deteriorate in their adjustment during the follow-up period. This study reports on the factors that characterize the children and youth that, while showing marginal benefit from residential treatment, continue to show community conduct problems at a two-year follow-up period. The results are discussed in the context of how knowledge of these factors can help inform future treatment and research directions.

According to the Jump$tart Coalition, Oklahoma is one of 24 states to adopt financial education requirements for students (Jump$tart Coalition, 2010). The Passport to Financial Literacy Act of 2007, Oklahoma House Bill 1476, requires Oklahoma students in grades 7 through 12 to fulfill established financial literacy requirements to graduate with a standard diploma. The Oklahoma State Department of Education (2009) provided detail on the standards to meet these requirements. Cooperative Extension educators use the "Reality Check" program to help schools address eight instruction areas. This article describes Reality Check, an interactive, hands-on financial educational program, and discusses how it helps teachers meet financial education requirements. (Contains 2 tables.)
