201. Understanding Higher Education Students' Sense of Belonging: A Qualitative Meta-Ethnographic Analysis

Abstract

The current literature on 'sense of belonging' spans a number of disciplines, with no apparent consensus on definition between these, complicated by the fact that sense of belonging is temporal and context-sensitive (such as during COVID-19). In particular, a closer look at how students define sense of belonging is needed from an up-to-date perspective to help them feel more connected to the faculty/campus and improve their wellbeing and mental health in the 'new normal' and 'next normal' post-pandemic eras. Therefore, this study explores higher education students' sense of belonging, a concept that has not been adequately conceptualised, from their perspectives. As these perspectives are subjective, an interpretive approach is required to generate rich meanings. This study has adopted a meta-ethnographic approach to synthesise qualitative studies, which allows for comparison and synthesis of studies into a new interpretation through translations. Interpretive qualitative synthesis resulted in one higher-order concept, four main concepts, and nineteen sub-concepts that conceptualise higher education students' understanding of sense of belonging to their universities.

202. The Challenge and Opportunities of Quantum Literacy for Future Education and Transdisciplinary Problem-Solving

Abstract

Background: Knowledge of quantum computing is arguably inaccessible to many, with knowledge of the complex mathematics involving a particular barrier to entry, creating difficulty in terms of teaching and inclusive learning for those without a high level of mathematics. Meanwhile, it is increasingly important that the knowledge of quantum technologies is accessible to those who work with real-world applications and is taught to the younger generation. Purpose: Resulting from collaborative dialogue between physicists, computer scientists, educationalists, and industrial end users, we propose the concept of quantum literacy as one means of addressing the need for transdisciplinary research in response to the complex problems that we see at the heart of issues around global sustainability. In this way, quantum literacy can contribute to UN Sustainable Development Goal 4, Quality Education. Methods: We introduce a specific puzzle visualization learning tool through which to achieve the pedagogic ends we set out with respect to quantum literacy. Visualization through puzzles can enable non-specialists to develop an intuitive, but still rigorous, understanding of universal quantum computation and provide a facility for non-specialists to discover increasingly complex and new quantum algorithms. Using the Hong-Ou-Mandel optical effect from quantum mechanics, we demonstrate how visual methods such as those made possible through the puzzle visualization tool can be very useful for understanding underlying complex processes in quantum physics and beyond and therefore support the aims of quantum literacy. Conclusion: We argue that quantum literacy, as defined here, addresses the challenges of learning within a highly bounded discipline and of access to the kind of powerful knowledge that should be more accessible to a wide group of learners. We therefore argue for the importance of addressing pedagogic issues when powerful knowledge consists of dense concepts, as well as complex and hierarchical relations between concepts, in addition to presenting a strong barrier to entry in the form of mathematics.

203. W.A.A.C.K. C.S.P.: The Tensions and Overlaps between Whiteness and Culturally Sustaining Pedagogies

Abstract

This article takes up the questions: How does Whiteness affect conceptions of Culturally Sustaining Pedagogies (CSP)? Specifically, when it comes to Whiteness, is there a culture worth sustaining? To begin this examination, we first outline what CSP and Whiteness are. Second, we review the literature within Critical Whiteness Studies (CWS) that takes up pedagogical questions. Third, we theorize the tensions and places of overlap across CSP and CWS--specifically that when it comes to Whiteness there is not a culture worth sustaining, but there is space for White people within CSP as long as they take account of Whiteness. Fourth, we propose a framework for merging CSP and CWS, W.A.A.C.K. C.S.P. (White folks Applying Anti-Racist Cultural Knowledge for Culturally Sustaining Pedagogies). We conclude with implications of this framework for future educational research and practical implications for White teachers and White students.

Abstract

Reinforcement learning (RL) requires access to a reward function that incentivizes the right behavior, but these are notoriously hard to specify for complex tasks. Preference-based RL provides an alternative: learning policies using a teacher's preferences without pre-defined rewards, thus overcoming concerns associated with reward engineering. However, it is difficult to quantify the progress in preference-based RL due to the lack of a commonly adopted benchmark. In this paper, we introduce B-Pref: a benchmark specially designed for preference-based RL. A key challenge with such a benchmark is providing the ability to evaluate candidate algorithms quickly, which makes relying on real human input for evaluation prohibitive. At the same time, simulating human input as giving perfect preferences for the ground truth reward function is unrealistic. B-Pref alleviates this by simulating teachers with a wide array of irrationalities, and proposes metrics not solely for performance but also for robustness to these potential irrationalities. We showcase the utility of B-Pref by using it to analyze algorithmic design choices, such as selecting informative queries, for state-of-the-art preference-based RL algorithms. We hope that B-Pref can serve as a common starting point to study preference-based RL more systematically. 205. Legged Robots that Keep on Learning: Fine-Tuning Locomotion Policies in the Real World

Abstract

Legged robots are physically capable of traversing a wide range of challenging environments, but designing controllers that are sufficiently robust to handle this diversity has been a long-standing challenge in robotics. Reinforcement learning presents an appealing approach for automating the controller design process and has been able to produce remarkably robust controllers when trained in a suitable range of environments. However, it is difficult to predict all likely conditions the robot will encounter during deployment and enumerate them at training-time. What if instead of training controllers that are robust enough to handle any eventuality, we enable the robot to continually learn in any setting it finds itself in? This kind of real-world reinforcement learning poses a number of challenges, including efficiency, safety, and autonomy. To address these challenges, we propose a practical robot reinforcement learning system for fine-tuning locomotion policies in the real world. We demonstrate that a modest amount of real-world training can substantially improve performance during deployment, and this enables a real A1 quadrupedal robot to autonomously fine-tune multiple locomotion skills in a range of environments, including an outdoor lawn and a variety of indoor terrains., Comment: Project website: https://sites.google.com/berkeley.edu/fine-tuning-locomotion

208. Biochemical properties of mutant GBA on alpha-synuclein metabolism

Abstract

Mutations in the GBA1 gene are numerically the greatest risk factor for Parkinson disease (PD). The GBA1 gene encodes for the lysosomal hydrolase enzyme, glucocerebrosidase (GCase), and mutations often lead to lysosomal impairment. The lysosome is important in the turnover of alpha-synuclein, the key hallmark for PD. The E326K mutation is one of the most common GBA1 mutations and is proposed to have a minimal effect on GCase activity. Common mutations, L444P and N370S, are well documented loss of function mutations. It was hypothesised that GBA1 mutations predispose patients to PD through influencing the relationship between GCase and alpha-synuclein, by altering the structural stability of GCase. The effect of the E326K mutation was characterised in human dermal fibroblasts, and demonstrated that it does not induce loss of GCase function, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) retention or ER stress, unlike L444P. Functional assays and proteolytic digestion analysis of recombinant GCase protein revealed minimal changes in stability across all mutants. This was corroborated in undifferentiated and differentiated SH-SY5Y dopaminergic neuron-like cell lines over-expressing GCase variants. Undifferentiated SH-SY5Y also demonstrated a drastic increase in lipid droplet number and a modest increase of insoluble alpha-synuclein aggregates in E326K mutants. Differentiated SH-SY5Y neurons and human midbrain dopamine neurons differentiated from induced pluripotent stem cells were treated with alpha-synuclein pre-formed fibrils (PFF) to accelerate alpha-synuclein pathology. No change in aggregation was demonstrated by Homogeneous Time Resolved Fluorescence® (HTRF®) analysis in E326K neurons compared to control. In conclusion, the work presented here demonstrates that the E326K mutation behaves differently to common loss of function mutations, however lipid dyshomeostasis and alpha-synuclein pathology is still evident.

Abstract

Meta-reinforcement learning (RL) methods can meta-train policies that adapt to new tasks with orders of magnitude less data than standard RL, but meta-training itself is costly and time-consuming. If we can meta-train on offline data, then we can reuse the same static dataset, labeled once with rewards for different tasks, to meta-train policies that adapt to a variety of new tasks at meta-test time. Although this capability would make meta-RL a practical tool for real-world use, offline meta-RL presents additional challenges beyond online meta-RL or standard offline RL settings. Meta-RL learns an exploration strategy that collects data for adapting, and also meta-trains a policy that quickly adapts to data from a new task. Since this policy was meta-trained on a fixed, offline dataset, it might behave unpredictably when adapting to data collected by the learned exploration strategy, which differs systematically from the offline data and thus induces distributional shift. We propose a hybrid offline meta-RL algorithm, which uses offline data with rewards to meta-train an adaptive policy, and then collects additional unsupervised online data, without any reward labels to bridge this distribution shift. By not requiring reward labels for online collection, this data can be much cheaper to collect. We compare our method to prior work on offline meta-RL on simulated robot locomotion and manipulation tasks and find that using additional unsupervised online data collection leads to a dramatic improvement in the adaptive capabilities of the meta-trained policies, matching the performance of fully online meta-RL on a range of challenging domains that require generalization to new tasks., Comment: 8.5 pages, 6 figures, accepted to ICML 2022

Abstract

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a lifelong and chronic condition that can cause severely compromised health. The T1D treatment regimen is complex, and is a particular challenge for adolescents, who frequently experience a number of treatment adherence barriers (e.g., forgetfulness, planning and organizational challenges, stress). Diabetes Journey is a gamified mHealth program designed to improve T1D self-management through a specific focus on decreasing adherence barriers and improving executive functioning skills for adolescents. Grounded in situativity theory and guided by a sociotechnical-pedagogical usability framework, Diabetes Journey was designed, developed, and evaluated using a learning experience design approach. This approach applied design thinking methods within a Successive Approximation Model design process. Iterative design and formative evaluation were conducted across three design phases, and improvements were implemented following each phase. Findings from the user testing phase indicate Diabetes Journey is a user-friendly mHealth program with high usability that holds promise for enhancing adolescents' T1D self-management. Implications for future designers and researchers are discussed regarding the social dimension of the sociotechnical-pedagogical usability framework. An extension to the framework is proposed to extend the social dimension to include socio-cultural and contextual considerations when designing mHealth applications. Consideration of the pedagogical and sociocultural dimensions of learning is imperative when developing psychoeducational interventions.

217. Inclusive learning for quantum computing: supporting the aims of quantum literacy using the puzzle game Quantum Odyssey

Abstract

With a vast domain of applications and now having quantum computing hardware available for commercial use, an education challenge arises in getting people of various background to become quantum literate. Quantum Odyssey is a new piece of computer software that promises to be a medium where people can learn quantum computing without any previous requirements. It aims to achieve this through visual cues and puzzle play, without requiring the user to possess a background in computer coding or even linear algebra, which are traditionally a must to work on quantum algorithms. In this paper we report our findings on an UKRI Citizen Science grant that involves using Quantum Odyssey to teach how to construct quantum computing algorithms. Sessions involved 30 minutes of play, with 10 groups of 5 students, ranging between 11 to 18 years old, in two schools in the UK. Results show the Quantum Odyssey visual methods are efficient in portraying counterintuitive quantum computational logic in a visual and interactive form. This enabled untrained participants to quickly grasp difficult concepts in an intuitive way and solve problems that are traditionally given today in Masters level courses in a mathematical form. The results also show an increased interest in quantum physics after play, a higher openness and curiosity to learn the mathematics behind computing on quantum systems. Abstract

Conveying complex objectives to reinforcement learning (RL) agents can often be difficult, involving meticulous design of reward functions that are sufficiently informative yet easy enough to provide. Human-in-the-loop RL methods allow practitioners to instead interactively teach agents through tailored feedback; however, such approaches have been challenging to scale since human feedback is very expensive. In this work, we aim to make this process more sample- and feedback-efficient. We present an off-policy, interactive RL algorithm that capitalizes on the strengths of both feedback and off-policy learning. Specifically, we learn a reward model by actively querying a teacher's preferences between two clips of behavior and use it to train an agent. To enable off-policy learning, we relabel all the agent's past experience when its reward model changes. We additionally show that pre-training our agents with unsupervised exploration substantially increases the mileage of its queries. We demonstrate that our approach is capable of learning tasks of higher complexity than previously considered by human-in-the-loop methods, including a variety of locomotion and robotic manipulation skills. Abstract

BackgroundSmall-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplements (SQ-LNSs) have been shown to reduce the prevalence of child anemia and iron deficiency, but effects on other micronutrients are less well known. Identifying subgroups who benefit most from SQ-LNSs could support improved program design.ObjectivesWe aimed to identify study-level and individual-level modifiers of the effect of SQ-LNSs on child hemoglobin (Hb), anemia, and inflammation-adjusted micronutrient status outcomes.MethodsWe conducted a 2-stage meta-analysis of individual participant data from 13 randomized controlled trials of SQ-LNSs provided to children 6-24 mo of age (n = 15,946). We generated study-specific and subgroup estimates of SQ-LNSs compared with control, and pooled the estimates using fixed-effects models. 225. Using the Concept of Relational Justice to Apply Fairness in Schools

Abstract

This paper makes the case for fairness as a driver towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of equitable quality education. We outline a dialogic fairness framework attending to the principles of relational justice in both the service of reducing educational inequalities and improving democratic qualities. The prominence of education as a theme in Fairness Commissions from many UK municipal councils afforded the opportunity to find out if and how fairness could be considered a driver of change towards greater equality in education. Our work with the Newcastle Fairness Commission generated a number of principles of fairness and education, as well as a framework to help operationalize these principles in schools, that we detail in this paper. The framework that was generated was one that recognizes fairness as a form of relational justice arising from a dialogic approach. It was based on a process that used multi-stakeholder interviews and a roundtable inquiry. Views arising from the process interviews and roundtable discussion were consistent with other research into young people's understandings of fairness and education. More research is needed to find out how fairness is understood and enacted by education stakeholders and how these conceptualizations, perspectives, and experiences might combine to improve educational equity and democratic qualities.

Abstract

Resulting from cross-disciplinary dialogue between physicists, computer scientists, educationalists, and industrial end users, we propose the concept of quantum literacy as one means of addressing the transdisciplinary nature of the complex problems that we see at the heart of issues around global sustainability. In this way, quantum literacy can contribute to UN Sustainable Development Goal 4, Quality Education. We argue that quantum literacy, as defined here, addresses the challenges of learning and skills acquisition within a highly bounded discipline and of access to the kind of powerful knowledge that should be more accessible to a wide group of learners throughout the life course, both students and professionals. It is increasingly important that the knowledge of quantum technologies is accessible to those who work with real world applications in a more inclusive way. We therefore argue for the importance of addressing pedagogic issues when powerful knowledge consists of dense concepts, as well as complex and hierarchical relations between concepts, in addition to presenting a strong barrier to entry in the form of mathematics. We introduce a specific puzzle visualization learning tool through which to achieve these pedagogic ends with respect to quantum computation. Visualization through puzzles can enable non-specialists to develop an intuitive, but still rigorous, understanding of universal quantum computation and provide a facility for non-specialists to discover increasingly complex and new quantum algorithms. Using the Hong-Ou-Mandel optical effect from quantum mechanics, we demonstrate how visual methods such as those made possible through the puzzle visualization tool, can be very useful for understanding underlying complex processes in quantum physics and beyond and therefore support the aims of quantum literacy., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures, position paper, typo in author name fixed in v2

Abstract

ABSTRACT Background Small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplements (SQ-LNS) have been shown to reduce the prevalence of anemia and iron deficiency among infants and young children, but effects on other micronutrients are less well known. Identifying subgroups who may experience greater benefits from SQ-LNS, or who are more likely to respond to the intervention, may facilitate the development of public health policies and programs. Objective Our objective was to identify study-level and individual-level modifiers of the effect of SQ-LNS on child hematological and micronutrient status outcomes. Methods We conducted a two-stage meta-analysis of individual participant data from 13 randomized controlled trials of SQ-LNS provided to children 6 to 24 months of age in low- and middle-income countries (n = 15,946). Outcomes were hemoglobin (Hb), inflammation-adjusted plasma ferritin, soluble transferrin receptor, zinc, retinol and retinol binding protein (RBP), and erythrocyte zinc protoporphyrin, and respective dichotomous outcomes indicative of anemia and micronutrient deficiency. We generated study-specific estimates of SQ-LNS vs. control, including main effects and subgroup estimates for individual-level effect modifiers, and pooled the estimates using fixed-effects models. We used random effects meta-regression to examine potential study-level effect modifiers. Results Provision of SQ-LNS decreased the prevalence of anemia (Hb < 110 g/L) by 16% (relative reduction), iron deficiency (plasma ferritin < 12 µg/L) by 56% and iron deficiency anemia (IDA; Hb < 110 g/L and plasma ferritin < 12 µg/L) by 64%. We observed positive effects of SQ-LNS on hematological and iron status outcomes within all subgroups of the study-level and individual-level effect modifiers, but effects were larger in certain subgroups. For example, effects of SQ-LNS on anemia and iron status were greater in trials that provided SQ-LNS for > 12 months and provided 9 mg/d vs. < 9 mg iron/d, and among later-born (vs. first-born) children. There was no effect of SQ-LNS on plasma zinc or retinol, but there was a 7% increase in plasma RBP and a 56% reduction in vitamin A deficiency (RBP < 0.70 µmol/L), with little evidence of effect modification by individual-level characteristics. Conclusions SQ-LNS provided to infants and young children 6-24 months of age can substantially reduce the prevalence of anemia, iron deficiency, and IDA across a range of individual, population and study design characteristics. Policy-makers and program planners should consider SQ-LNS within intervention packages to prevent anemia and iron deficiency. 250. Practical Prosody: New Hope for Teaching German Plurals

Abstract

German plural formation appears unsystematic and largely arbitrary to many second language (L2) learners. While some approaches have attempted to identify patterns and rules to help L2 learners (e.g., Anton et al., 2017; Di Donato & Clyde, 2020; Kraiss, 2014), one central observation from linguistic analysis has been absent from pedagogical advances: German plurals show a strong tendency to end in a syllabic trochee (e.g., Wegener, 1999; Wiese, 2000, 2001, 2009). This article seeks to bridge the gap between linguistic insights and L2 pedagogy by presenting an instructional approach integrating the trochee. We provide support for this approach based on an exploratory study comparing two groups of L2 speakers that both received several suffix-predicting rules for specific word endings and completed controlled practice exercises on plurals. Crucially, only one group received additional instruction on the prosodic pattern of German plurals. While both groups made gains, the prosodic training group showed a greater increase in confidence and accuracy in plural formation, particularly among lower-proficiency speakers. The prosodic training group also produced more trochaic plurals for nonce words, thus responding more like native speakers. Overall, we suggest that this linguistically-informed strategy might help students learn plurals more effectively by delimiting suffix options based on prosody.
