It is demonstrated that the HOF.CH3CN could be the chemistry's best oxygen-transfer agent. It is capable of transformations that cannot be completed by any other reagent, and the reaction RN3 -> RNO2 is an important example.

The synthesis of monomeric and dimeric chromium complexes containing amidinate ligands of the formula [RNC(CH3)NR']- is described. Despite the presence of the short chromium-chromium bond, NMR spectra and solution weight experiments demonstrate that the dimeric complex dissociates to monomers in cyclohexane and benzene solutions.

A study describing a new set of compounds that exhibit a unique property among metal complexes in which luminescence can be switched on under gentle grinding of a solid sample is presented. Monodisperse Au8 nanodots were synthesized and stabilized in dendrimer biocompatible poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) aqueous solution. Practical applications of gold nanodots as a novel fluorescence become possible due to the more than 100-fold enhancement in quantum yield.

A novel method for the synthesis of five structural isomers of fullerene dimers is detailed. For the synthesis of dimer, fullerene is made to react with K2CO3 and the mixture is subjected to flash chromatography wherein the five different isomers get separated, they have a total of eight nonequivalent C-C bonds, and the two of these are exclusively involved in cycloadditions.

As novel magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent, gadofullerene encapsulated redox nanoparticles (Gd3NPs) were prepared by encapsulation of Gd3N@C80 in the core of core-shell-type polymer micelles composed of original polyamine with a reactive oxygen species (ROS)-scavenging ability. Because Gd3NPs possess biocompatible PEG shell with a smaller size (ca. 50 nm), they had high colloidal stability in a physiological environment, and showed low cytotoxicity. Specific accumulation of Gd3NPs in a tumor was confirmed in tumor-bearing mice after systemic administration. The tumor/muscle (T/M) ratio of the Gd ion reached five at 7.5 h after the administration. T1-weighted MRI signal enhancement of the T/M ratio increased by 8% at 6 h postinjection of Gd3NPs (Gd dose:14.35 μmol/kg). Although Gd3NPs showed a tendency for extended blood circulation, they did not have severe adverse effects, probably due to the confinement of Gd in a hydrophobic fullerene in addition to the ROS-scavenging capacity of these nanoparticles. In sharp contrast, systemic administration of Gd-chelate nanoparticles (GdCNPs) to mice disrupts liver function, increases leukocyte counts, and destroys spleen and skin tissues. Leaking of Gd ions from GdCNPs may cause such adverse effects. Based on these results, we expect that Gd3NPs is high-performance MRI contrast agents for tumor diagnosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It has been possible to make a real-time observation of the formation of elongated nanocapsules through a coalescence of Sm metallofullerenes within single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). It was found that chemical reaction dynamics in SWNTs can be directly observed through the in situ high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy measurements.

It has been possible to make the first synthesis, isolation, electron energy loss spectroscopy and 13C NMR characterization of Ti-metallofullerenes. The Ti2@C80 metallofullerene is the first production and experimental investigation of D5h-C80.
