Abstract

The article discusses the continued efforts by the Indian government to protect the Taj Mahal from environmental degradation. The effort to save the Taj began in 1983, when 10,400 sq km of area around the monument was declared the Taj Trapezium Zone and polluting units were prohibited in the area. A government-appointed committee found that the cause of deterioration of the marble of the Taj and black spots was not pollution, but microscopic algae.

Abstract

Introduction:Neurotoxicity caused by diverse psychostimulant drugs, for example, methamphetamine, 3,4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine, cocaine or morphine is a cause of concern to human populations especially the young generation across the world. These recreational drugs affect brain function severely leading to addiction and brain pathology. Use of psychostimulants may induce breakdown of the blood–brain barrier to serum proteins resulting in adverse brain microenvironment, edema cell injury or eventually neuronal death. Thus, there is an urgent need to find out detailed mechanisms of psychostimulants-induced neurotoxicity in vivomodels for suitable therapeutic strategies to induce neuroprotection and also to help de-addiction in clinical situations.Areas covered:In this review, psychostimulants drugs-induced neurotoxicity is discussed in view of recent literature and the financial burden it may pose on our society due to rehabilitation and de-addiction. Furthermore, experimental evidences of drug-induced neuroprotection are also discussed.Expert opinion:Use of in vivomodels of neurotoxicity caused by psychostimulants is discussed based on author’s own research and to find suitable drugs that could induce neuroprotection including nanodelivery. Furthermore, novel therapeutic agents for de-addiction and reducing neurotoxicity following psychostimulants administration are presented.

248. Nanowired drug delivery for neuroprotection in central nervous system injuries: modulation by environmental temperature, intoxication of nanoparticles, and comorbidity factors.

Abstract

Recent developments in nanomedicine resulted in targeted drug delivery of active compounds into the central nervous system (CNS) either through encapsulated material or attached to nanowires. Nanodrug delivery by any means is supposed to enhance neuroprotection due to rapid accumulation of drugs within the target area and a slow metabolism of the compound. These two factors enhance neuroprotection than the conventions drug delivery. However, this is still uncertain whether nanodrug delivery could alter the pharmacokinetics of compounds making it more effective or just longer exposure of the compound for extended period of time is primarily responsible for enhanced effects of the drugs. Our laboratory is engaged in understanding of the nanodrug delivery using TiO2 nanowires in CNS injuries models, for example, spinal cord injury (SCI), hyperthermia and/or intoxication of nanoparticles with or without other comorbidity factors, that is, diabetes or hypertension in rat models. Our observations suggest that nanowired drug delivery is effective under normal situation of SCI and hyperthermia as evidenced by significant reduction in the blood-brain barrier (BBB) breakdown, brain edema formation, cognitive disturbances, neuronal damages, and brain pathologies. However, when the pathophysiology of these CNS injuries is aggravated by nanoparticles intoxication or comorbidity factors, adjustment in dosage of nanodrug delivery is needed. This indicates that further research in nanomedicine is needed to explore suitable strategies in achieving greater neuroprotection in CNS injury in combination with nanoparticles intoxication or other comorbidity factors for better clinical practices. 249. Antifertility Effects of Pueravia tuberosa Root Extract in Male Rats.

Abstract

Oral administration of Pueraria tuberosa D.C. root extract to male rats (100 mg/rat per day) for the period of 60 days did not cause body weight loss, whereas the weights of testes, epididymides, seminal vesicle, and ventral prostate were significantly reduced. The production of step-19 spermatids was reduced by 63.7% in P. tuberosa-treated rats. The population of preleptotene spermatocytes and secondary spermatocytes were decreased by 61 and 72%, respectively. The seminiferous and Leydig cell nuclear area were reduced significantly (p < 0.001) when compared to controls. The number of mature Leydig cells was significantly reduced. Treated rats showed significant (p < 0.001) reduction in the sperm concentration of testes and cauda epididymides. The sperm motility of the cauda epididymides was also reduced significantly (p < 0.001). The Pueraria treatment reduced the fertility of male rats by 100%. A significant fall in the total protein and sialic acid contents of the testes, epididymides, seminal vesicle, and ventral prostate as well as glycogen contents of testes was also observed. Fructose in seminal vesicle was lowered non-significantly, whereas testicular cholesterol was elevated in comparison to controls. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
