The sodium-ion storage properties of FeS-reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and Fe3O4 -rGO composite powders with crumpled structures have been studied. The Fe3 O4 -rGO composite powder, prepared by one-pot spray pyrolysis, could be transformed to an FeS-rGO composite powder through a simple sulfidation treatment. The mean size of the Fe3O4 nanocrystals in the Fe3O4 -rGO composite powder was 4.4 nm. After sulfidation, FeS nanocrystals of size several hundred nanometers were confined within the crumpled structure of the rGO matrix. The initial discharge capacities of the FeS-rGO and Fe3O4 -rGO composite powders were 740 and 442 mA h g(-1), and their initial charge capacities were 530 and 165 mA h g(-1), respectively. The discharge capacities of the FeS-rGO and Fe3O4 -rGO composite powders at the 50th cycle were 547 and 150 mA h g(-1), respectively. The FeS-rGO composite powder showed superior sodium-ion storage performance compared to the Fe3O4 -rGO composite powder.

Objectives The purpose of this study is to examine the development of PBL Module and the possibility of the evaluation on the Korean medical Pediatrics class. Methods In this study, we examined the 32 case reports (four teams for three years) which were made by the Korean medicine school year students, who attended the discussion class. The student read the given materials and identified the purpose of the subjects and selected the learning issues, investigated them. After then they discussed the subjects and made the reports. Results The learning issues by students were similar, the students worked to study them with research papers, books, internet materials and personal subjects. After class, the students showed the change of their thoughts and they could accept the other one. Conclusions This study suggests it is possible that the development of PBL Module and the evaluation on the Korean medical Pediatrics Class.

Theses literature were published between the January 2010 to September 2015 by using the China Academic Journal (CAJ) of China National Knoweldge Infrastructure (CNKI).ResultsMost studies mentioned the effect of acupuncture (scalp, general) or acupoint-injection, derma needle, warm acupoint. It was more effective with other herbal complex rehabilitation therapy such as acupuncture, physical therapy occupational therapy, rehabilitation, and the complex speech therapy than just the herbal therapy alone. Acupuncture of acupoint-injection has overall 86～96% of rehabilitation rate.The acupuncture was often used with the general acupuncture and scalp acupuncture. Commonly used major acupuncture points were sishencong (四神總), bohui (百會), yundongqu (運動區), and pinghengqu (平衡區), Li11, Li04, Gb39, St41.The main acupoint-injection points were fengchi (Gb21) and jiexi (St41). For the injection, brain actiator, astragalus injection, cerebroprotein hydrolysate, Vit B1, Vit B2 were commonly used.ConclusionAcupuncture and acupoint-injection have been shown as an effective treatment on spastic cerebral palsy. Research Findings: This qualitative study explored the process through which a small group of preservice early childhood teachers engaged in primary caregiving as a framework for learning about early care and education with infants during an infant practicum course at a university-affiliated early childhood center in the United States. Based on multiple data sources, findings revealed that the participants found the primary care system to be beneficial to both infants and teachers. The student teachers gained a better understanding of the uniqueness of the infancy period, experienced the emotional rewards of a special relationship with an infant, and learned to provide individualized and relationship-based infant care and education, while the infants received the benefits of this care. A concept network is an essential knowledge base for semantic search engines, personalized search systems, recommendation systems, and text mining. Recently, studies of extending concept representation using external ontology have been frequently conducted. We thus propose a new way of building 3-dimensional text model-based concept networks using the world knowledge-level Wikipedia ontology. In fact, it is desirable that 'concepts' derived from text documents are defined according to the theoretical framework of formal concept analysis, since relationships among concepts generally change over time. In this paper, concept networks hidden in a given document collection are extracted more reasonably by representing a concept as a term-by-document matrix.

This paper presents the application of the Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) numerical technique to simulate the driving of open-ended piles into sandy soil. The main objective of this study was to investigate the applicability of CEL technique to the behavior of the driven pile penetration. Comprehensive studies to verify the behavior of driven pile penetration are presented in this paper. Through comparison with results of field load tests, the CEL methodology was found to be in good agreement with the general trend observed by in situ measurement, and the CEL approach accurately simulated the behavior of driven pipe piles.

This qualitative multicase study explored the process through which three student caregivers engaged in relationships with key infants in the context of an infant practicum course as a foundation for learning about infant development and practice. Focusing on caregiver–infant dyads, data sources included videotaped observations of caregiver–child interactions across three time points in a semester, and student caregivers’ weekly reflective notebooks and assignments. Findings from this study revealed the power and value of relationships as an essential context for learning about infant development, infant care and education, and preparation of infant professionals. Ample time and supported opportunities to develop authentic relationships with infants and their families, and a framework for reflection on relationships and practice were provided through a well-constructed and supervised infant practicum, which is recommended for both early childhood preservice students and those preparing for related discipl...

Hepatic steatosis is a process of abnormal lipid deposition within the liver cells, often caused by excessive alcohol uptake or obesity. A conventional in vitro model for hepatic steatosis uses a liver cell culture, treated with fatty acids and measures accumulation of lipids within the cells. This model does not recapitulate the complex process of absorption and metabolism of digestive lipids. Here, we introduce a gut-liver chip, which mimics the gut absorption and hepatic metabolism in a microfluidic chip. Absorption of fatty acids through gut layer and subsequent deposition within liver cells was demonstrated. Tumor necrosis factor-α, butyrate, and α-lipoic acid were chosen as model molecules that can affect hepatic steatosis via different mechanisms, and their effects were evaluated. Our results suggest that the gut-liver chip can mimic the absorption and accumulation of fatty acids in the gut and the liver.

Thymosin β4 (Tβ4) is known to inhibit an inflammatory response and to increase the survival of osteoblasts on titanium (Ti) surfaces. Ti is the most widely used graft material in dentistry; however, an inflammatory response induced following implant placement results in the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The oxidative stress from the production of ROS such as nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) can damage surrounding cells, resulting in implant failure by decreasing cell viability. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the biological effects of Tβ4 on the oxidative stress induced to MC3T3-E1 preosteoblasts on the Ti surface. Based on an MTT assay and bromodeoxyuridine immunofluorescence staining, Tβ4 was found to increase the proliferation of the H2O2-exposed MC3T3-E1 cells on Ti discs. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and western blot analyses showed that Tβ4 decreased the mRNA and protein expression levels of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in H2O2-exposed MC3T3-E1 cells on the Ti discs. Tβ4 inhibited the synthesis of intracellular ROS and the secretion of NO and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) from H2O2-exposed MC3T3-E1 cells on the Ti discs. In conclusion, Tβ4 inhibits H2O2-induced iNOS and COX-2 expression with a decrease in ROS, NO, and PGE2 synthesis, which leads to improved cell survival with low cytotoxicity under an oxidative stress condition in MC3T3-E1 cells on the Ti surface. This suggests that Tβ4 may be a crucial molecule to reduce oxidative stress-induced cell damage or hypoxia, leading to promoted osseointegration on the Ti surface during implant placement.

The benefits of inhibiting the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system (RAAS) are well established for left ventricular dysfunction, but remain unknown for right ventricular (RV) dysfunction. The aim of the current meta-analysis is to investigate the role of RAAS inhibition on RV function in those with or at risk of RV dysfunction. Medline, PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane Libraries were systematically searched and 12 studies were included for statistical synthesis, comprising 265 RAAS inhibition treatment patients and 265 placebo control patients. The treatment arm showed a trend towards increased RV ejection fraction (weighted mean difference (WMD)=0.95, 95% CI −0.12 to 2.02, p=0.08) compared with the control arm. Subgroup analysis demonstrated a trend towards improvement in RV ejection fraction in patients receiving angiotensin receptor blockers compared with control (WMD=1.11, 95% CI −0.02 to 2.26, p=0.06), but not in the respective comparison for ACE inhibitors (WMD=0.07, 95% CI −2.74 to 2.87, p>0.05). No differences were shown between the two groups with regard to maximal oxygen consumption, RV end-systolic volume, RV end-diastolic volume, duration of cardiopulmonary exercise testing, and resting and maximal heart rate. Mild adverse drug reactions were common but evenly distributed between the treatment and control groups. The current meta-analysis highlights that there may be a role for RAAS inhibition, particularly treatment with angiotensin receptor blockers, in those with or at risk of RV dysfunction. However, further confirmation will be required by larger prospective trials.

Introduction. This study aims to investigate the clinical practice states on the diagnosis and treatment for insomnia between Korean medical general practitioners (KMGPs) and Korean medical neuropsychiatry specialists (KMNPSs). Methods. We distributed questionnaires via email or in person to 1,017 KMGPs and via email to 165 KMNPSs. We collected and analyzed responses from 305 (30.00%) KMGPs and 53 (32.12%) KMNPSs. Results. Most KMGPs and KMNPSs responded that the number of new patients visiting the clinic for treatment of insomnia was less than 10 per month (78.2%). Frequently utilized therapies for insomnia are acupuncture and herbal decoctions. Particularly acupoint GV20 and Guipi decoction were chosen with the highest response rate. There was no difference between KMNPSs and KMGPs in the traditional Korean medical diagnosis methods. However, KMNPSs utilized more various methods to diagnose, treat, and evaluate insomnia and educated more actively sleep hygiene compared to KMGPs. Conclusions. This survey showed how insomnia is currently diagnosed and treated in Korean medical care settings. Moreover, we identified some differences between KMNPSs and KMGPs. Further research is required to explore the underlying reasons for these discrepancies among KMDs and to improve the quality of Korean medical clinical practice in treating insomnia.

The Social Emotional Health Survey–Secondary (SEHS-S) was developed to assess adolescent’s core mindsets that are associated with positive psychosocial development. The present study extended SEHS–S research by examining its use with a nonwestern sample of Korean adolescents (Grades 7–12; N = 686) and examined the invariance of the SEHS–S factor structure for males and females. Factor analyses were conducted in two stages. In stage 1, using a split-half of the total sample (S1), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was employed to test the fit of the previously known factor structure of the SEHS–S. In stage 2, using S2, structural equation modeling was used to test two alternative SEHS–S factor structures and invariance across gender groups in a series of multigroup CFAs. Results indicated that the CFA analyses supported the SEHS–S measurement model. The multigroup invariance analysis found that the SEHS–S higher-order structure had full invariance across gender groups, which indicated that the measured latent traits have similar meaning across groups and that the students responded to the items in similar ways. Latent means analysis found that females more strongly (moderate effect size) endorsed belief-in-others items than males. A SEM analysis also found that the SEHS–S measurement model, including the second-order covitality latent trait was a significant positive predictor of subjective wellbeing. Finally, students with higher levels of covitality reported better school achievement and fewer depressive symptoms. Implications for the applied use of the SEHS–S in Korea to assess complete mental health are discussed.

Formation of patterned metal and semiconductor (e.g. silicon) nanowires is achieved using anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates with porous structures of different heights resulting from an initial step difference made by etching the aluminum (Al) thin film with a photoresist developer prior to the anodization process. This approach allows for the growth of vertically aligned nanowire arrays on a metal substrate, instead of an oriented semiconductor substrate, using an electroplating or a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process. The vertically aligned metal and semiconductor nanowires defined on a metal substrate could be applied to the realization of vertical 3D transistors, field emission devices, or nano-micro sensors for biological applications.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrinal disorder that afflicts mainly women of childbearing age. The symptoms of PCOS are irregular menstrual cycles, weight gain, subfertility and infertility. However, because the etiology is unclear, management and treatment methods for PCOS are not well established. Recently, natural substances have been used for PCOS therapy. Ecklonia cava (E. cava) is a well-known natural substance that attenuates the effects of inflammation, allergies, and cancer. In this study, we investigated the effects of E. cava extract in rats with PCOS. When rats with letrozole-induced PCOS were exposed to the E. cava extract, the regular estrus cycle was restored, similar to that in placebo rats. Hormone levels, including the levels of testosterone, estrogen, luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), and anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), were restored to their normal states. Histological analysis revealed that the polycystic ovary symptoms were significantly decreased in the E. cava-treated rats and were comparable to those of normal ovaries. At the transcriptional and translational levels, Ar, and Esr2 levels were markedly increased in the E. cava-treated rats with PCOS compared with the rats with letrozole-induced PCOS. These results suggest that the E. cava extract inhibits the symptoms of PCOS by restoring imbalanced hormonal levels and irregular ovarian cycles in letrozole-induced female rats.

BACKGROUND: Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) stimulates cell proliferation and enhances matrix gene expression and synthesis. However, there have been no comparative study of the PRP effect on the normal and degenerative tenocytes. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of PRP on tenocytes from normal and degenerative tendon.METHODS: Tendon tissues were obtained from patients undergoing arthroscopic repair (n=9) and from healthy donors (n=3). Tenocytes were cultured with 10% (vol/vol) platelet-poor plasma, PRP activated with calcium, and PRP activated with calcium and thrombin. The total cell number was assessed at days 7 and 14. The expressions of type I and III collagen, decorin, tenascin-C, and scleraxis were evaluated by quantitative real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. The total collagen and glycosaminoglycan (GAG) synthesis was evaluated at days 7 and 14.RESULTS: No differences were observed between the groups at day 7, but cell proliferation was remarkably increased in tenocytes from the degenerative tendon at day 14. In both tenocyte groups, the gene expressions of type I and III collagen were up-regulated. GAG synthesis was greater in the normal tendon, whereas the expressions of decorin and tenascin-C were increased in tenocytes from the degenerative tendon. Tenocytes from the degenerative tendon had higher fold-change of GAG synthesis and a lower collagen III/I ratio than normal tenocytes.CONCLUSIONS: PRP promoted the cell proliferation and enhanced the synthesis of tendon matrix in both groups. PRP has a greater positive effect on cell proliferation, matrix gene expression and synthesis in tenocytes from degenerative tendon.

Neutron reflectometry has been used to study the adsorption of the anionic surfactant bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate cesium salt on the anionic surface of mica. Evidence of significant adsorption is reported. The adsorption is reversible and changes little with pH. This unexpected adsorption behavior of an anionic molecule on an anionic surface is discussed in terms of recent models for surfactant adsorption such as cation bridging, where adsorption has been reported with the divalent ion calcium but not previously observed with monovalent ions.

The sprouts of oak species play an important role in maintaining the oak community in a disturbed environment. In this study, we cut 1-year-old oak in three times during the 3 years and measured the sprout responses to know sprouting ability of six deciduous oaks in Korea. Oak sprouts have appeared in spring and fall, and some of the sprouts had lifespan as short as a month. As the number of cutting increases, sprout number of Quercus acutissima increased whereas the other oak species decreased or died. The average number of sprouts over the 3 years was from 1.4 (Quercus mongolica) to 2.2 (Q. acutissima) per individual. Quercus serrata died after the second cutting, and Quercus dentata died after the third cutting. So, the two species have the lowest sprouting ability among six oak species. The sprouts grew actively during fall and slowly in summer. The sprout length during the 3 years was in the following descending order: Q. acutissima, Quercus aliena, Q. dentata, and Q. mongolica. Sprout of Q. acutissima and Q. aliena generated steadily over the 3 years, and sprout of Quercus variabilis and Q. mongolica was changed by year. After the 3 years, the number of sprouts increased only in Q. acutissima but sprout number of the other five oak species decreased. The sprout length of Q. acutissima, Q. aliena, and Q. variabilis increased, but sprout length of the other three oak species decreased. The average survival rate of saplings over the 3 years was in the following descending order: Q. acutissima, Q. aliena, Q. variabilis, and Q. mongolica. As a result, the sprouting ability of Q. acutissima was the highest. Such level of sprouting ability may be the evidence of how Q. acutissima community exists as a dominant species in a disturbed environment in lowlands of Korea peninsula.

Objectives GyejigaChulBuTang (GCBT) is a prescription used to treat acute and chronic arthritis in Korea, China, and Japan. This study assessed the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant activities of GCBT on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophage cells. Methods Raw264.7 cells were pretreated with or without GCBT for 1 hour prior to incubation with LPS. Anti-inflammatory activity of GCBT was evaluated with reference to gene expression and production levels of proinflammatory cytokines (, IL-, IL-6, GM-CSF and ) and inflammatory mediators (iNOS, COX-2, NO and ). In addition, intracellular ROS generation and signal transduction of MAPK family, PI3K/Akt and was investigated. Results Prior treatment with GCBT inhibited elevation of , IL-, IL-6, GM-CSF, , NO and , together with their cognate mRNAs in a dose-dependent manner. Intracellular ROS contents were similarly reduced. These effects were due to inhibition of LPS-induced phosphorylation of MAPK family, PI3K/Akt and as well as nuclear translocation of . Conclusions GCBT suppresses pro-inflammatory mediators. GCBT has potential in the treatment of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis associated with inflammation.

OBJECTIVES: The “Most Diabetes and Health Friendly Shelves” initiative was developed to assist choice food pantry clients improve food choices to prevent or manage diabetes or other diet-related chronic conditions. The objective this study was to explore the feasibility and acceptability of the program and its impact on food choices and management of health conditions in food pantry clients and volunteers at an urban food pantry. METHODS: A cross-sectional qualitative study was conducted using in-depth interviews. Thirteen pantry clients and six pantry volunteers completed the study after 9 months of the initiative beginning. Semi-structured questions were used to explore the overall perceptions of the shelves and the impact of the initiative on shopping and eating habits and diet-related chronic disease management. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and coded by two researchers independently using NVivo 12. Major themes were identified and summarized. RESULTS: More than half of clients interviewed were female (n = 7), with most being Non-Hispanic white (n = 8) or Black American (n = 5). Less than half had high blood pressure (n = 6) and diabetes (n = 3). Most clients favored the shelves due to their convenience and overall appealing design. Significant impacts on food choices and shopping behaviors were identified with the common themes: becoming more selective to healthful foods, more aware of the nutritional value of food specifically sugar and sodium content, and more frequently reading Nutrition Fact labels. Several clients conveyed the positive impact the initiative had on management of their or a family members diabetes. On the contrary, a few clients expressed disinterest due to not having diet-related chronic diseases. Volunteers had positive impressions of the shelves suggesting they have encouraged clients to select healthier items, read Nutrition Facts labels more, and become more aware of diet-related chronic diseases. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggested the initiative was feasible to be implemented and receptive to pantry clients at an urban choice food pantry. In addition, the initiative was shown to help achieve positive changes to shopping and eating behaviors with the possibility of improving the management of diet-related chronic diseases. OBJECTIVES: The “Most Diabetes and Health Friendly Shelves” initiative was designed to help choice food pantry clients improve their food choices to prevent or manage diabetes or other diet-related chronic diseases. The objective of this study was to assess perceptions about the initiative and any changes in food choices and shopping behaviors after the initiative was implemented at a choice food pantry. METHODS: A cross sectional quantitative study was conducted using a self-administered survey. Fifty food pantry clients completed the survey after eight months of implementing the initiative at an urban choice food pantry. The “Most Diabetes and Health Friendly Shelves,”sections of food shelves at a choice food pantry, contained healthier food options and they were marked with green tape and magnets. The goal of the initiative was to facilitate clients to choose healthier food options in an easy and quick way. A poster to introduce the initiative was hung and an education brochure was distributed to clients. The survey was composed of demographics and 47 questions on perceptions about the initiative and food choices and shopping behaviors at the food pantry as well as the grocery store. Descriptive statistics were conducted using SPSS. RESULTS: The majority of participants were non-Hispanic white (58%), females (58%). Less than half (44%) had high blood pressure and one-quarter (24%) had diabetes. Most participants (72%) perceived the shelves as helpful in managing or preventing diet related chronic diseases. The poster and brochure were perceived easy/very easy to use (55%, 63%) and understand (78%, 88%), respectively. The most frequently reported food items taken from the shelves included canned vegetables (82%), canned fruit (80%), and beans (74%). Participants reported that they started reading Nutrition Facts labels (44%, 50%) and selecting low-sodium (42%, 34%) or low-sugar options (30%, 22%), whole grain foods (30%, 20%), and fresh produce (36%, 32%) at the pantry and grocery store, respectively, after the implementation of the initiative. CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggested that most participants were receptive to the “Most Diabetes and Health Friendly Shelves” initiative and it had potential to lead to positive changes in food selections and shopping behaviors in choice food pantry clients. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to assess the promotion of MyPlate and the level of interest by pantry coordinators in offering health screenings to their clients at food pantries. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted using mixed methods of survey and an observational checklist. The online survey was completed by 31 coordinators at urban food pantries using REDCap(TM) (version 8.1.2)(56.4% response rate). Ten food pantries were observed for organization of food, shelf labeling, MyPlate promotional items, and spaces for health screenings and group/individual education. Descriptive statistics were completed using Microsoft Excel. RESULTS: Less than two thirds (61.3%) were choice food pantries and 32.5% organized food by food groups. About half of coordinators rated encouraging MyPlate as high (22.6%) or medium (32.2%) priority. Few (22.6%) promoted MyPlate to their clients, mainly through pamphlets and posters. One third of coordinators encouraged volunteers to provide nutrition information to clients. While one pantry currently provided nutrition training for volunteers, 26% were interested in future training for volunteers. Even though more than half of food pantry coordinators were very (29%) or somewhat (25.8%) interested in providing health screenings to their clients, only 19.3% currently provided onsite blood pressure screening. Barriers included the lack of professional/trained volunteers, space, and funding for equipment. Findings from the observations showed the organization of foods differed by available space and distribution methods in food pantries and no pantries separated food by alternative options (e.g., regular vs. reduced sodium, reduced fat). In addition, the findings confirmed the promotion methods of MyPlate and limited space for health screening from the survey. CONCLUSIONS: While promoting MyPlate was a priority at most food pantries, few pantries promoted MyPlate. Health screenings were also a priority but could not be actualized due to resource barriers. Exploration of community assets and resources and establishing collaborations with local clinics and academia may be the next step to overcome the barriers. Two symmetrical planar star shaped organic small molecules TPA[DTS-PyBTTh3]3 (1) and DMM-TPA[DTS-PyBTTh3]3 (2) with TPA and fused TPA core donors, respectively, and three branched DTS-PyBTTh3 units were synthesized and characterized.

This study was aimed at (1) investigating expectant mothers` prenatal attachment according to variables (age, gestational weeks, perceived health condition, anticipating the gender of the fetus, marriage duration, and parity), (2) analyzing correlations among their prenatal attachment, spousal support, and parenting efficacy, and (3) examining the role of prenatal attachment as a mediator between spousal support and parenting efficacy. For this purpose, 221 expectant mothers living in Seoul completed a 55-item survey. The collected data were analyzed by t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson`s correlation coefficients, and regression analyses. The findings of this study were as follows. First, among the variables, gestational weeks, perceived health condition, marriage duration, and parity showed significant differences in the scores for the overall prenatal attachment and subordinate factors. Second, there were positive correlations between the expectant mothers` prenatal attachment and spousal support and between their prenatal attachment and parenting efficacy. Third, the expectant mothers` prenatal attachment proved to mediate between spousal support and parenting efficacy. These findings shed light on the significance of prenatal attachment and spousal support during the pregnancy period; therefore, it is essential to develop education programs for expecting parents to enhance prenatal attachment and spousal support and to conduct follow-up studies to verify the effectiveness of the programs.

Objectives The purpose of this study is to report the clinical effects of Korean medical treatments on peripheral facial palsy. Methods In this study, 5 children were treated with peripheral facial palsy with Korean medical treatments, such as herb medicines, acupunctures, electro-acupuncture, and infrared therapy. Results As a result of the treatment, 5 children were almost recovered. The average treatment period was 42.17 days, with average recovery period of 9 weeks. Conclusions This study shows that Korean medical treatments on childhood peripheral facial palsy could be one of the viable options for this patient kind.

A Survey of Actual Guides for Children to Take the Oriental Medicine in the Oriental Clinics & the Oriental Hospitals Lee Su Jeong, Lee Seung Yeon, Yu Sun Ae Department of Pediatrics, College of Oriental Medicine, Dongeui University Objectives Children’s unique taste bud often gives them difficult time to take oriental medicines. To overcome, survey was conducted focusing on useful and practical tips on how to take them. Methods The survey was carried out by posting mail questionnaire. Target clinics for the survey were selected by the internet search engine, Google, Daum, and Naver, and typing in "oriental treatment + pediatrics", "pediatrics + oriental medicine", "pediatric oriental clinic". 24 clinics were searched, but they were further narrowed down to the specialized pediatric oriental clinics. Also, total of 38 inquiry leaflets were distributed to 14 University Oriental Hospitals. Results If children refuse to take the medicine, mixture with sweeteners can be prescribed for them. Among them, oligosaccharide is the most recommended followed by sugar and honey. To avoid rejection to medication, use of different formulation, such as distillation medicine, soft X-Section, granulated medicine, and character printing can be used.

Multiple channeling is a straightforward additional procedure for rotator cuff repair that creates multiple channels in the greater tuberosity, through which bone marrow of the proximal humerus communicates with the repair site.To investigate the effect of multiple channeling on clinical and structural outcomes of arthroscopic rotator cuff repair.Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3.A total of 124 patients with a full-thickness rotator cuff tear were included in the study. Fifty-seven patients underwent arthroscopic rotator cuff repair with multiple channeling (the multiple channeling group) and 67 without it (the conventional group). Analysis of surface markers was performed to characterize the cells recruited by multiple channeling using flow cytometry. Clinical outcomes were evaluated preoperatively and at a minimum of 2 years after surgery (average, 36.79 ± 13.69 months) with respect to pain, range of motion, muscle strength, overall satisfaction, and commonly used functional scores. At a minimum of 9 months after surgery, structural integrity was assessed by magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomography arthrography.Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) positive for CD73, CD90, and CD105 and negative for CD45 could be isolated and cultured from bone marrow mononuclear cells of the proximal humerus. Clinical outcomes, including pain, range of motion, strength, overall satisfaction, and functional scores, showed no statistical difference between the 2 groups (all P.05). The retear rate of the multiple channeling group (22.2%) was significantly lower than that of the conventional group (45.2%) (P = .023).The findings of the study showed that multiple channeling significantly decreased the retear rate after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, probably via the recruitment of endogenous MSCs from the proximal humerus. Although the results did not show significant differences in the clinical outcomes between the 2 groups, better clinical outcomes might be anticipated in the multiple channeling group via improved structural integrity in a long-term follow-up.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is expected to have a biological augmentation potential in the healing of various diseases and injuries, including rotator cuff tears. However, few evaluations have been performed specifically for large to massive tears.To assess the efficacy of PRP augmentation in patients undergoing arthroscopic repair for large to massive rotator cuff tears.Randomized controlled trial; Level of evidence, 1.A total of 48 patients scheduled for arthroscopic repair of large to massive rotator cuff tears were randomly assigned to receive either PRP-augmented (PRP group) or conventional treatment (conventional group). In the PRP group, 3 PRP gels (3 × 3 mL) were applied to each patient between the torn end and the greater tuberosity. The primary outcome measure was the retear rate assessed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomographic arthrography (CTA) at a minimum of 9 months after surgery. Secondary outcome measures included pain, range of motion, muscle strength, overall satisfaction, functional scores, and the change in cross-sectional area (CSA) of the supraspinatus.The retear rate of the PRP group (20.0%) was significantly lower than that of the conventional group (55.6%) (P = .023). Clinical outcomes showed no statistical difference between the 2 groups (all P.05) except for the overall function (P = .043). The change in 1-year postoperative and immediately postoperative CSA was significantly different between the 2 groups: -15.54 ± 94.34 mm² in the PRP group versus -85.62 ± 103.57 mm² in the conventional group (P = .047).The application of PRP for large to massive rotator cuff repairs significantly improved structural outcomes, as evidenced by a decreased retear rate and increased CSA of the supraspinatus compared with repairs without PRP augmentation. While there was no significant difference in clinical outcomes except the overall shoulder function after 1-year follow-up, better structural outcomes in the PRP group might suggest improved clinical outcomes at longer term follow-up.

This qualitative multiple-case study explored the experience of flow in individual art therapy with three Korean immigrant children who had difficulties adjusting to their new home and school circumstances in the United States. Flow theory was used to interpret data collected from the children's engaged art-making experiences and illuminated the balance between challenge and skill that characterizes the attainment of flow in art. Data were collected from post-session video-stimulated interviews, discussions with parents, artwork, and case notes. Study findings highlight the value of an optimal artistic experience in coping with everyday challenges. Therapeutic implications of the challenges these young immigrants faced at school and at home also are discussed.

The binding of an anionic surfactant onto an anionic surface by addition of divalent ions is reported based on experimental data from specular neutron reflection (NR) and attenuated total internal reflection IR spectroscopy (ATR-IR). Similar measurements using monovalent ions (sodium) do not show any evidence of such adsorption, even though the amount of surfactant can be much higher. This data is interpreted in terms of the so-called bridging mechanism of ion binding.

Background: A corticosteroid injection is commonly used to treat tendinopathy, but it has been associated with negative effects on tendon homeostasis. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is known to have proliferative and anabolic effects as well as cytoprotective effects against corticosteroids on tenocytes. However, the combined effects of a corticosteroid and PRP on the anti-inflammatory, matrix synthesis, and cytoprotective potential of tenocytes in conditions simulating tendinopathy have not been investigated. Purpose: To assess the effects of PRP on tenocytes from degenerative rotator cuff tears with the concomitant use of a corticosteroid in interleukin 1β (IL-1β)–induced tendinopathic conditions. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: Tenocytes were enzymatically isolated and cultured from patients with degenerative rotator cuff tears. PRP was prepared using a plateletpheresis system, and growth factor concentrations were measured. To evaluate the gene expression of proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines, enzymes and their inhibitors, and matrix molecules, cells were cultured with 1 ng/mL IL-1β, 1 μM dexamethasone, and 10% (vol/vol) platelet-poor plasma (PPP) and PRP of 200, 1000, and 4000 × 103/μL; quantitative real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction was also performed. Western blotting was performed to investigate the protein synthesis of degradative enzymes and their inhibitors. Cell viability, apoptosis, and senescence assays were also conducted. Results: PRP did not interfere with the anti-inflammatory effects of dexamethasone on tenocytes pretreated with IL-1β, but it increased the synthesis of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TIMP)–1 and -3. Meanwhile, PRP did not induce anti-inflammatory cytokines that had been suppressed with a corticosteroid. It did increase the type I/III collagen ratio mainly through the suppression of type III collagen expression. PRP reversed the decreased viability, increased apoptosis, and induced senescence with IL-1β and a corticosteroid. Conclusion: This study shows that the addition of PRP does not interfere with the anti-inflammatory effects of a corticosteroid on IL-1β–treated tenocytes from degenerative rotator cuff tears but that it does avoid the deleterious side effects of a corticosteroid. Clinical Relevance: PRP can be clinically useful with a corticosteroid as a treatment for tendinopathy.

Mostly scoliosis was found at childhood and recently rate of scoliosis is increasing. Causes of scoliosis were very various, but the patients are due to idiopathic reasons. Scoliosis was treated by conservative treatment or surgery treatment. If scoliosis is diagnosed early enough, it can be treated with conservative treatment. Methods We are searching PubMed by keywords and found 47 theses complied with requirements. Results Studies of conservative treatment of Scoliosis were active. Conservative treatments are considered before surgery treatment and there was a set guideline of conservative treatment. Also, there were several studies about effectiveness of conservative treatment and quality of life, mental stress. Studies about various kinds of conservative treatment were found as well. There were brief studies about introduction of new brace, effectiveness of several braces, and case studies.

Purpose This study examined associations of functional limitation due to any health problems and six chronic diseases (arthritis, diabetes, coronary heart disease, heart attack, hypertension, and stroke) with food security among U.S. adults. Methods The 2011 National Health Interview Survey data for 30,010 adults (≥18 years) were used. Adults were categorized into food secure, low food secure, or very low food secure. Multivariable logistic regressions were used to estimate adjusted odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for having functional limitation and chronic diseases while adjusting for sociodemographic and lifestyle factors. Results The prevalence of functional limitation and the chronic diseases were higher in low–food-secure and very low–food-secure than food-secure adults. The adjusted ORs were significant in both low food secure and very low food secure, respectively, for functional limitation (OR: 1.87; 95% CI: 1.63, 2.14), (OR: 2.20; 95% CI: 1.91, 2.52), inflammatory diseases or joint/muscular pain (OR: 1.42; 95% CI: 1.21, 1.68), (OR: 1.74; 95% CI: 1.49, 2.04), diabetes (OR: 1.26; 95% CI: 1.06, 1.51), (OR: 1.23; 95% CI: 1.02, 1.48), and hypertension (OR: 1.18; 95% CI: 1.04, 1.35), (OR: 1.42; 95% CI: 1.22, 1.65) when compared with food-secure adults. Conclusions Findings indicate that food insecurity is associated with functional limitation and chronic diseases, whereas directionality is unknown. Besides the traditional food assistance program for food-insecure populations, interventions to prevent or manage chronic diseases may be necessary to help them reduce the risk of the diseases and manage their conditions.
