Abstract

The innovation paths in Complex Products and Systems (CoPS) industries are negotiated ex-ante among stakeholders, in projects or small batches, unlike mass production industries. Organizations dealing with CoPS must sharp their project portfolio to secure their operations and deploy their development strategy while facing diverse natures of project uncertainties. Literature is still evolving with empirical studies to master this critical challenge. The diamond approach for innovation and project management appraises uncertainty dimensions in projects to infer their contingencies and to examine portfolios for innovation. This research applied the diamond approach in a case study to reveal how the China-Brazil Earth Resources Satellite (CBERS) program overcome the above challenge. Results show the categorization for each space mission, a comparative analysis of how they contributed to the program objectives, the identification of strategic and operational projects, and depicted innovation patterns across the satellite product families. The research explored a market innovation of a sensor conceived specially to enhance a deforestation detection alert system to the Amazon biome. The diamond approach was valuable to perform this analysis and could be improved to represent the specificities of innovation types in complex systems. Organizations may benefit from this research by using successful strategies and lessons learned to address the above challenge.

231. Oscillation of a Flexible Catenary Shaped Submersed Pipe Induced by Two-Phase Slug Flow of Liquid and Gas

Abstract

In this paper, an experimental study of the excitation of a submersed suspended flexible pipe induced by the internal two-phase slug flow of liquid and gas is presented. The experiment was conducted with the pipe set in catenary configuration inside a water tank with a depth of 2m. Water and air were injected into the pipe at various flow rates combinations, leading to the formation of horizontal slug flow patterns. The slug two-phase flow generated intermittent loads on the pipe causing its oscillation. The dynamic response of the pipe to the slug flow was monitored by cameras which registered the movement of target marks set up along the body of the pipe. Processing the video images, we obtained the time-history of the movement of the pipe, and from this, the frequencies and amplitudes of motion were determined. With the proper scaling up, and in conjunction with computer simulators of pipe dynamics running intermittent load models of slug flows, the present work may be helpful to improve the capability of engineers for the analysis of the behavior of suspended risers used in offshore petroleum production carrying up oil and gas from petroleum reservoir wells to floating production facilities.

Abstract

Tesis (DCI)--FCEFN-UNC, 2022 Hoy en día hay un creciente desafío de lograr redes eléctricas más sustentables debido al cambio climático. Por esta razón, se están incorporando generación proveniente de fuentes renovables en la red mientras que se están investigando técnicas de gestión de la demanda. En este sentido, la gestión de la demanda se enfoca en el aplanamiento del perfil de demanda, la reducción de las pérdidas de energía, inversiones y capacidad de la red. Son comunes las investigaciones sobre la optimización de la demanda de un solo usuario o de un grupo de usuarios en gestión de la demanda. Sin embargo, el primero no considera riesgos de nuevos picos en la red y el segundo no considera asuntos de privacidad en los usuarios. Esta tesis propuso una optimización multinivel donde la distribuidora, que es el agente de nivel superior, tiene dos alternativas de optimización: una que considera requerimientos técnicos y la otra donde maximiza su ganancia. En cambio, los usuarios, que pertenecen al nivel inferior, siempre tratan de reducir su factura eléctrica. En ambos niveles de la optimización se utilizó un algoritmo genético, que es un método heurístico. Los usuarios optimizan su costo reaccionando a las señales de precios enviadas por la distribuidora. La distribuidora necesita conocer su costo de suministro para poder determinar su ganancia y enviar una señal de precios que sea razonable, pero se detectó un escaso interés en obtener una función de costo de suministro real y escalable. Por esta razón se incorporó a esta tesis un estudio sobre las funciones de costo de suministro existentes y se propuso una nueva función cuadrática. Luego se las analizó utilizando el precio del punto de equilibrio (el precio que hace la ganancia cero), que permitió demostrar el buen desempeño y escalabilidad de la función propuesta. Finalmente, se efectuaron las simulaciones para ambos criterios de la distribuidora utilizando la nueva función de costo. Se concluyó que en ambos casos la distribuidora mejoró el perfil de demanda e incrementó su ganancia en comparación con el caso sin optimizar. Sin embargo, cuando la distribuidora maximizó su ganancia algunos usuarios se beneficiaron a costa de otros. Esto demuestra que el criterio técnico presenta un mejor desempeño. Abstract

BackgroundImpairment of bowel, urogenital and fertility-related function in patients treated for rectal cancer is common. While the rate of rectal cancer in the young (MethodsThe REACCT international collaborative database was reviewed and data on eligible patients analysed. Inclusion criteria comprised patients with a histologically confirmed rectal cancer, ResultsA total of 1428 (n=1428) patients met the eligibility criteria and were included in the final analysis. Metastatic disease was present at diagnosis in 13%. Of these, 40% received neoadjuvant therapy and 50% adjuvant chemotherapy. The incidence of post-operative major morbidity was 10%. A defunctioning stoma was placed for 621 patients (43%); 534 of these proceeded to elective restoration of bowel continuity. The median follow-up time was 42 months. Of this cohort, a total of 415 (29%) reported persistent impairment of functional outcomes, the most frequent of which was bowel dysfunction (16%), followed by bladder dysfunction (7%), sexual dysfunction (4.5%) and infertility (1%).ConclusionA substantial proportion of patients with early-onset rectal cancer who undergo surgery report persistent impairment of functional status. Patients should be involved in the discussion regarding their treatment options and potential impact on quality of life. Functional outcomes should be routinely recorded as part of follow up alongside oncological parameters.

Abstract

The Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD-Atrial Fibrillation (GARFIELD-AF) is a worldwide non-interventional study of stroke prevention in patients with non-valvular AF.52,080 patients with newly diagnosed AF were prospectively enrolled from 2010 to 2016. 4121 (7.9%) of these patients were recruited in DACH [Germany (n = 3567), Austria (n = 465) and Switzerland (n = 89) combined], and 47,959 patients were from 32 countries in other regions worldwide (ORW). Hypertension was most prevalent in DACH and ORW (85.3% and 75.6%, respectively). Diabetes, hypercholesterolaemia, carotid occlusive disease and vascular disease were more prevalent in DACH patients vs ORW (27.6%, 49.4%, 5.8% and 29.0% vs 21.7%, 40.9%, 2.8% and 24.5%). The use of non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) increased more in DACH over time. Management of vitamin K antagonists was suboptimal in DACH and ORW (time in therapeutic range of INR ≥ 65% in 44.6% and 44.4% of patients or ≥ 70% in 36.9% and 36.0% of patients, respectively). Adjusted rates of cardiovascular mortality and MI/ACS were higher in DACH while non-haemorrhagic stroke/systemic embolism was lower after 2-year follow-up.Similarities and dissimilarities in AF management and clinical outcomes are seen in DACH and ORW. The increased use of NOAC was associated with a mismatch of risk-adapted anticoagulation (over-and-undertreatment) in DACH. Suboptimal control of INR requires educational activities in both regional groups. Abstract

The life cycles of many marine taxa are still unknown, especially those species with indirect development and long-lived larval stages. Life cycles of cnidarians are relatively well known for most groups except Ceriantharia. This taxon presents taxonomic problems stemming from the lack of association between planktonic larval forms, often described as distinct species, with the corresponding adult benthic stages. Our study focused on the development of larvae with peculiar external morphology that could be linked to a described species established from adult specimens. Through cultivation of these larvae to juveniles with adult-like morphology and also with the use of DNA barcoding, it was possible to link the stages observed to a known species, Isarachnanthus nocturnus. Based on life span of the larva in the plankton (63-118 days), the larvae could potentially drift for about 2000-4000 km along the coast. Because rearing larvae in the laboratory may be complex and time-consuming and also because morphological data may have limited distinguishing power for specific identification of larvae collected in the field, we suggest and discuss the use of DNA barcoding as a tool to connect life stages of species of cerianthids and invertebrates in general., Author(s): Sergio N. Abstract

The potassium ion, present in great amount in the vinasse because it is a monovalent cation, has the characteristic of promoting the dispersion of clay particles, in the same way as the sodium, causing a reduction in the pore space of the soil and, in its turn, reducing its permeability. To evaluate this effect of reduction by application of vinasse to the soil, an experiment was conducted for three different soils, with the objective of evaluating the effect of the application of different doses of vinasse on hydraulic conductivity of saturated soil and verifying its possible chemical changes of these soils. For that, it was used PVC columns (in a scheme of constant head permeameter to obtain the values of hydraulic conductivity of saturated soil), filled with three soils - Dark Red Latosol (DRL), Purple Latosol (PL) and Eutrophic Red Nitossol (ERN) - , in which were applied four doses of vinasse (0, 150, 300 and 450m³ ha-1), distributed in a completely randomized design with a 3x4 factorial scheme with three replications. The results evidenced that only the Dark Red Latosol (DRL) showed a reduction in the values of hydraulic conductivity of saturated soil, and in front of the application of vinasse, up to 300m³ ha-1, it was observed an increase in the concentrations of potassium, calcium and cation exchange capacity (CEC) ions.

Abstract

The La Meseta Formation crops out in Seymour/Marambio Island, Weddell Sea, northeast of the Antarctic Peninsula and contains one of the world's most diverse assemblages of Weddellian marine/coastal verte-brates of Early Eocene (Ypresian) age. The La Meseta Formation is composed of poorly consolidated, marine sandstones and siltstones which were deposited in a coastal, deltaic and/or estuarine environment. It includes marine invertebrates and vertebrates as well as terrestrial vertebrates and plants. The highly fossiliferous basal horizon (Cucullaeashell bed, Telm 4 of Sadler 1988) of the CucullaeaI Allomember is a laterally extensive shell bed with sandy matrix. The fish remains, including 35 species from 26 families, of the Ypresian Cucullaeabed represent one of the most abundant and diverse fossil vertebrate faunas yet recorded in southern latitudes. Stratigraphic distribution and phylogenetic relationships of the Weddellian sphenisciforms are consistent with a first radiation of this group in the Early Eocene. The first inquestionable archaeocete from Antarctica is recorded in this unit and is referred to a new taxon.
