201. Gas-phase CO in protoplanetary disks: a challenge for turbulent mixing

Abstract

This is the first paper in a series where we study the influence of turbulent diffusion and advective transport on the chemical evolution of protoplanetary disks, using a 2D flared disk model and a 2D mixing gas-grain chemical code with surface reactions. A first interesting result concerns the abundance of gas-phase CO in the outer regions of protoplanetary disks. In this Letter we argue that the gas-phase CO concentration in the disk regions, where the temperature is lower than $\sim25$ K, can be significantly enhanced due to the combined effect of vertical and radial mixing. Abstract

We observed the embedded, young 8--10 Msun star AFGL 490 at subarcsecond resolution with the Plateau de Bure Interferometer in the C17O (2--1) transition and found convincing evidence that AFGL 490 is surrounded by a rotating disk. Using two-dimensional modeling of the physical and chemical disk structure coupled to line radiative transfer, we constrain its basic parameters. We obtain a relatively high disk mass of 1 Msun and a radius of ~ 1500 AU. A plausible explanation for the apparent asymmetry of the disk morphology is given., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

206. Millimeter observations and modeling of the AB Aurigae system

Abstract

(Abriged) We present the results of millimeter observations and a suitable chemical and radiative transfer model of the AB Aur (HD 31293) circumstellar disk and surrounding envelope. The integral molecular content of this system is studied by observing CO, C$^{18}$O, CS, HCO$^+$, DCO$^+$, H$_2$CO, HCN, HNC, and SiO rotational lines with the IRAM 30-m antenna, while the disk is mapped in the HCO$^+$(1-0) transition with the Plateau de Bure interferometer. Using a flared disk model with a vertical temperature gradient and an isothermal spherical envelope model with a shadowed midplane and two unshielded cones together with a gas-grain chemical network, time-dependent abundances of observationally important molecules are calculated. Then a 2D non-LTE line radiative transfer code is applied to compute excitation temperatures of several rotational transitions of HCO$^+$, CO, C$^{18}$O, and CS molecules. We synthesize the HCO$^+$(1-0) interferometric map along with single-dish CO(2-1), C$^{18}$O(2-1), HCO$^+$(1-0), HCO$^+$(3-2), CS(2-1), and CS(5-4) spectra and compared them with the observations. Our disk model successfully reproduces observed interferometric HCO$^+$(1-0) data, thereby constraining the following disk properties: (1) the inclination angle $\iota=17^{+6}_{-3}\degr$, (2) the position angle $\phi=80\pm30\degr$, (3) the size $R_\mathrm{out}=400\pm200$ AU, (4) the mass $M_\mathrm{disk}=1.3\cdot10^{-2} M_{\sun}$ (with a factor of $\sim7$ uncertainty), and (5) that the disk is in Keplerian rotation. Abstract

(abridged) We analyse the evolution of the fractional ionisation in a steady-state protoplanetary disc with a vertical temperature gradient and with gas-grain chemistry including surface reactions. The ionisation due to stellar X-rays, stellar and interstellar UV radiation, cosmic rays and radionuclide decay is taken into account. Using our reduction schemes as a tool for the analysis, we isolate small sets of chemical reactions that reproduce the evolution of the ionisation degree at representative disc locations with an accuracy of 50%-100%. Column densities of key molecules are calculated and compared to the results of other recent studies and observational data.

Abstract

We present a radiative transfer model which computes the spectral energy distribution of a passive, irradiated, circumstellar disk, assuming the grains are in radiative equilibrium. Dependence on radial density profile, grain temperature estimation, and optical depth profiles on the output SED are discussed. The bist fit model for HR4796A has a minimum and maximum spherical grain size of 2.2 and 1000 \mu$m respectively, a size distribution slightly steeper than the "classical" -3.5 MRN power law, grains composed of silicates, trolite, ice, and organics and a peak radial density of 1.0 x 10^-17 g cm^-2 at 70 AU, yielding a disk mass of roughly 2 M_{oplus}$., Comment: 4 pages, one figure, published in proceedings of Scientific Frontiers in Research on Extrasolar Planets, A.S.P. Abstract

With the chemical reaction rate database UMIST95 (Millar et al. 1997) we analyze how uncertainties in rate constants of gas-phase chemical reactions influence the modelling of molecular abundances in the interstellar medium. Random variations are introduced into the rate constants to estimate the scatter in theoretical abundances. Calculations are performed for dark and translucent molecular clouds where gas phase chemistry is adequate. Similar approach was used by Pineau des Forets & Roueff (2000) for the study of chemical bistability. All the species are divided into 6 sensitivity groups according to the value of the scatter in their model abundances computed with varied rate constants. It is shown that the distribution of species within these groups depends on the number of atoms in a molecule and on the adopted physical conditions. The simple method is suggested which allows to single out reactions that are most important for the evolution of a given species., Comment: 4 pages. Abstract

In this paper, we present mean gas and dust opacities relevant to the physical conditions typical of protoplanetary discs. As the principal absorber for temperatures below ~1,500 K, we consider spherical and aggregate dust particles of various sizes, chemical structure, and porosity, consisting of ice, organics, troilite, silicates, and iron. For higher temperatures, ions, atoms, molecules, and electrons are included as the main opacity sources. Rosseland and Planck mean opacities are calculated for temperatures between 5 K and 10,000 K and gas densities ranging from 10^{-18} g/ccm to 10^{-7} g/ccm. The dependence on the adopted model of dust grains is investigated. Abstract

Dark matter induced event rate in an Earth-based detector is predicted to show an annual modulation as a result of the Earth's orbital motion around the Sun. We searched for this modulation signature using the ionization signal of the DarkSide-50 liquid argon time projection chamber. No significant signature compatible with dark matter is observed in the electron recoil equivalent energy range above $40~{\rm eV_{ee}}$, the lowest threshold ever achieved in such a search., 8 pages, 4 figures

215. Reduction of chemical networks. I. The case of molecular clouds

Abstract

We present a new method to analyse and reduce chemical networks and apply this technique to the chemistry in molecular clouds. Using the technique, we investigated the possibility of reducing the number of chemical reactions and species in the UMIST 95 database simultaneously. In addition, we did the same reduction but with the ``objective technique'' in order to compare both methods. We found that it is possible to compute the abundance of carbon monoxide and fractional ionisation accurately with significantly reduced chemical networks in the case of pure gas-phase chemistry. For gas-grain chemistry involving surface reactions reduction is not worthwhile. Abstract

We present the first mid-infrared (MIR) detection of a field brown dwarf (BD) and the first ground-based MIR measurements of a disk around a young BD candidate. We prove the absence of warm dust surrounding the field BD LP 944-20. In the case of the young BD candidate Cha Ha2, we find clear evidence for thermal dust emission from a disk. Surprisingly, the object does not exhibit any silicate feature as previously predicted. We show that the flat spectrum can be explained by an optically thick flat dust disk.

218. The Temperature of Nonspherical Circumstellar Dust Grains

Abstract

The temperatures of prolate and oblate spheroidal dust grains in the envelopes of stars of various spectral types are calculated. Homogeneous particles with aspect ratios {\small $a/b \le 10$} composed of amorphous carbon, iron, dirty ice, various silicates, and other materials are considered. The temperatures of spherical and spheroidal particles were found to vary similarly with particle size, distance to the star, and stellar temperature. The temperature ratio {\small $T_{\rm d}({\rm spheroid})/T_{\rm d}({\rm sphere}) $} depends most strongly on the grain chemical composition and shape. Spheroidal grains are generally colder than spherical particles of the same volume; only iron spheroids can be slightly hotter than iron spheres. At {\small $a/b \approx 2$}, the temperature differences do not exceed 10 %. If {\small $a/b \ga 4$}, the temperatures can differ by 30-40 %. For a fixed dust mass in the medium, the fluxes at wavelengths {\small $\lambda \ga 100 \mkm$} are higher if the grains are nonspherical, which gives over estimated dust masses from millimeter observations. Abstract

Dark matter elastic scattering off nuclei can result in the excitation and ionization of the recoiling atom through the so-called Migdal effect. The energy deposition from the ionization electron adds to the energy deposited by the recoiling nuclear system and allows for the detection of interactions of sub-GeV/c2 mass dark matter. We present new constraints for sub-GeV/c2 dark matter using the dual-phase liquid argon time projection chamber of the DarkSide-50 experiment with an exposure of (12 306±184) kg d. The analysis is based on the ionization signal alone and significantly enhances the sensitivity of DarkSide-50, enabling sensitivity to dark matter with masses down to 40 MeV/c2. Furthermore, it sets the most stringent upper limit on the spin independent dark matter nucleon cross section for masses below 3.6 GeV/c2.

Abstract

A model of spheroidal particles is used to calculate the steady-state temperature of dust grains immersed in the interstellar radiation field. It is found that the temperature of non-spherical grains with the aspect ratios a/b <= 2 deviates from that of spheres less than 10%. More elongated or flattened particles are usually cooler than spheres of the same mass and in some cases the temperatures may differ by even about a factor of 2. The shape effects increase with the infrared absorptivity of the grain material and seem to be more important in dark interstellar clouds., Comment: 4 pages, 2 Postscript figures; accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics Letters

Abstract

We use spectra and maps of the J  = 1 − 0 and J  = 2 − 1 DCO+, DCN, DNC, |$\rm N_2D^+$| lines, and 111−101 ortho- and para-NH2D lines, obtained with the  Institut de Radioastronomie Millimétrique (IRAM)-30 m telescope, as well as observations of their hydrogenated isotopologues to study deuteration processes in five high-mass star-forming regions. The temperature was estimated from CH 3CCH lines, also observed with the IRAM-30 m telescope, and from NH 3 lines, observed with the 100 m radio telescope in Effelsberg, as well as using the integrated intensity ratios of the J  = 1 − 0 H13CN and HN13C lines and their main isotopologues. Applying a non-local thermodynamic equilibrium radiative transfer model with radex , the gas density and the molecular column densities were estimated. D/H ratios are 0.001–0.05 for DCO+, 0.001–0.02 for DCN, 0.001–0.05 for DNC, and 0.02–0.4 for NH2D. The D/H ratios decrease with increasing temperature in the range of 20–40 K and slightly vary at densities |$n(\rm H_2) \sim 10^4\!-\!10^6$| cm−3. The deuterium fraction of |$\rm N_2H^{+}$| is 0.008–0.1 at temperatures in the range of 20–25 K and at a density of ∼105 cm−3. We also estimate relative abundances and find ∼10−11–10−9 for DCO+ and DNC, ∼10−11–10−10 for |$\rm N_2D^+$|⁠ , and ∼10−10–10−8 for NH2D. The relative abundances of these species decrease with increasing temperature. However, the DCN/H2 ratio is almost constant (∼10−10). Abstract

The search for neutrino events in correlation with gravitational wave (GW) events for three observing runs (O1, O2 and O3) from 09/2015 to 03/2020 has been performed using the Borexino data-set of the same period. We have searched for signals of neutrino-electron scattering and inverse beta-decay (IBD) within a time window of $$\pm \, 1000$$ ± 1000 s centered at the detection moment of a particular GW event. The search was done with three visible energy thresholds of 0.25, 0.8 and 3.0 MeV. Two types of incoming neutrino spectra were considered: the mono-energetic line and the supernova-like spectrum. GW candidates originated by merging binaries of black holes (BHBH), neutron stars (NSNS) and neutron star and black hole (NSBH) were analyzed separately. Additionally, the subset of most intensive BHBH mergers at closer distances and with larger radiative mass than the rest was considered. In total, follow-ups of 74 out of 93 gravitational waves reported in the GWTC-3 catalog were analyzed and no statistically significant excess over the background was observed. As a result, the strongest upper limits on GW-associated neutrino and antineutrino fluences for all flavors ( $$\nu _e, \nu _\mu , \nu _\tau $$ ν e , ν μ , ν τ ) at the level $$10^9{-}10^{15}~\textrm{cm}^{-2}\,\textrm{GW}^{-1}$$ 10 9 - 10 15 cm - 2 GW - 1 have been obtained in the 0.5–5 MeV neutrino energy range.

Abstract

The authors discuss the underpinnings of structural analysis in the higher education system. The article justifies why it focuses on specific labor market segments and the nature of the university's basic product as grounds for proposing a typology and groups of institutions. A Soviet "master plan" is reconstructed on the basis of the formulated approach to the typology. It is important because, according to the authors, the current structure of the Russian system of higher education is largely determined by how it developed during the Soviet period. It is shown that the Soviet project was built on the idea of administrative regulation of the labor market, and it is argued that it generally implemented a quasi-corporate system model of higher vocational education. The article analyzes how the structure of the higher education system that Russia inherited from the Soviet Union changed under the influence of factors that were mainly external to the education system. It was changed to a much lesser degree by deliberate government policy. The typology of higher education institutions that results from these changes is described based on an analysis of quantitative data. The authors consider possible structural policy directions in the field of higher vocational education as a foundation for working out a "master plan" for restructuring the higher education system in Russia. Abstract

Axions with an energy of 8.4 keV emitted in the М1 transition in 169Tm nuclei in the Sun are sought in the → 169Tm* → (8.4 keV) reaction of resonant absorption by 169Tm nuclei on the Earth using a thulium garnet crystal as a bolometric detector. The flux of monochromatic 8.4‑keV axions has been calculated. New constraints on the axion–nucleon coupling constants have been obtained and, as a result, new upper bounds on the axion mass eV and eV have been obtained at 90% C.L. in the KSVZ and DFSZ models, respectively.
