211. Optical control of ferroelectric domains:nanoscale insight into macroscopic observations

Abstract

Domain wall nanoelectronics constitutes a potential paradigm shift for next‐generation energy conversion and von‐Neumann devices. In this context, attempts have been made to achieve energy‐efficient control over ferromagnetic, ferroelectric, and ferroelastic domain walls through electric and magnetic fields or applied stress. However, optical control of ferroic domains offers an additional degree of freedom and significant advantages of reduced hysteresis and Joule heating losses, creating novel opportunities in the regime of nanoelectronics and photonics. Herein, the reversible optical control of ferroelectric domains and domain walls in a novel band‐gap‐engineered lead‐free ferroelectric ceramic ((K0.5Na0.5)NbO3–2 mol% Ba(Ni0.5Nb0.5)O3−δ ) is demonstrated. The optical poling behaves similar to electrical poling and is governed by the bulk ferroelectric photovoltaic effect. The light‐generated charge carriers are transported toward domain walls or electrodes due to a nonzero field in the samples. This causes a change in internal electric field influencing the nanoscale state of polarization, which could also be interesting for other ferroelectrics if the voltage generated by light is in the range of the switching voltages. This work establishes a relationship between light‐induced macroscopic observations and nanoscale changes in the ferroelectric response, providing fundamental insight and facilitating research into ferroelectric photovoltaics and optoelectronics.

Abstract

The French critical zone initiative, called OZCAR (Observatoires de la Zone Critique–Application et Recherche or Critical Zone Observatories–Application and Research) is a National Research Infrastructure (RI). OZCAR-RI is a network of instrumented sites, bringing together 21 pre-existing research observatories monitoring different compartments of the zone situated between “the rock and the sky,” the Earth’s skin or critical zone (CZ), over the long term. These observatories are regionally based and have specific initial scientific questions, monitoring strategies, databases, and modeling activities. The diversity of OZCAR-RI observatories and sites is well representative of the heterogeneity of the CZ and of the scientific communities studying it. Despite this diversity, all OZCAR-RI sites share a main overarching mandate, which is to monitor, understand, and predict (“earthcast”) the fluxes of water and matter of the Earth’s near surface and how they will change in response to the “new climatic regime.” The vision for OZCAR strategic development aims at designing an open infrastructure, building a national CZ community able to share a systemic representation of the CZ , and educating a new generation of scientists more apt to tackle the wicked problem of the Anthropocene. OZCAR articulates around: (i) a set of common scientific questions and cross-cutting scientific activities using the wealth of OZCAR-RI observatories, (ii) an ambitious instrumental development program, and (iii) a better interaction between data and models to integrate the different time and spatial scales. Internationally, OZCAR-RI aims at strengthening the CZ community by providing a model of organization for pre-existing observatories and by offering CZ instrumented sites. OZCAR is one of two French mirrors of the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructure (eLTER-ESFRI) project.

Abstract

A 3-year survey has been performed in the Cevennes mountain area, in the South of France, in order to separate surface, shallow sub-surface and groundwater contributions to the flash flood processes. Electrical conductivity, temperature, pH, major and trace elements, total organic carbon and stable isotopes of water were monitored during low flows and floods, in the small (3.9 km(2)) granitic catchment of Valescure (Gard, France). The data collected during the campaign are widely presented, in relation to the different hydrological compartments (rainfall, shallow soil water, groundwater, streamwater). This constitutes at present the most complete hydrogeo-chemical database in the Cevennes area, available within the Hymex data base

© 2019, The Author(s). Understanding and manipulating complex spin texture in multiferroics can offer new perspectives for electric field-controlled spin manipulation. In BiFeO 3 , a well-known room temperature multiferroic, the competition between various exchange interactions manifests itself as non-collinear spin order, i.e., an incommensurate spin cycloid with period 64 nm. We report on the stability and systematic expansion of the length of the spin cycloid in (110)-oriented epitaxial Co-doped BiFeO 3 thin films. Neutron diffraction shows (i) this cycloid, despite its partly out-of-plane canted propagation vector, can be stabilized in thinnest films; (ii) the cycloid length expands significantly with decreasing film thickness; (iii) theory confirms a unique [11 2 ¯] cycloid propagation direction; and (iv) in the temperature dependence the cycloid length expands significantly close to T N . These observations are supported by Monte Carlo simulations based on a first-principles effective Hamiltonian method. Our results therefore offer new opportunities for nanoscale magnonic devices based on complex spin textures.

Abstract

Recently, spin spiral type multiferroic materials are widely investigated for their unusual properties and potential applications in memory technology, sensors, and field-effect transistors. It is of interest to investigate surface magnetism in iron vanadate (FeV2O4) due to varying physical properties. Here, the temperature-dependent magnetic domain evolution has been systematically investigated by using cryogenic magnetic force microscopy (MFM). We find irregular and asymmetrical magnetic domain coarsening and shrinking as a function of temperature and also different domain evolution between field cooled and zero field cooled MFM. These findings provide an improved understanding of physical properties related to domain structures.

Abstract

The ultrathin SnO2 film, prepared by the successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method, was applied between p-type Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) and n-type CdS layers to passivate the interface as well as the top section of CZTS grain boundaries. With the aid of this layer, electric properties have been significantly improved. The device efficiency improved from 6.82% to 8.47%, which is mainly contributed by the boost of fill factor (FF) and open circuit voltage (Voc). However, the further increase of SnO2 thickness results in decreased Jsc and FF. Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy (KPFM) unveils the passivation of grain boundaries (GBs) of CZTS with the SnO2 coating. This work shows a new insight into the heterointerface and GBs passivation for high efficiency CZTS solar cells.

Abstract

Domain walls in ferroelectric materials have tantalizing potential in disruptive memory and reconfigurable nanoelectronics technologies. Here, a ferroelectric domain wall switch with three distinct addressable resistance states is demonstrated. The device operation hinges on fully controllable and reversible conformational changes of the domain wall. As validated by atomistic simulations consistent with the experiments, using electric field, the shape—and hence the charge state—of the domain wall and ultimately its conduction are altered. Sequential nanoscale transitions of the walls are visualized directly using stroboscopic-piezoresponse force microscopy and Kelvin probe microscopy. Anisotropic head-to-head domain wall injection, stabilized by the majority carrier type of the ferroelectric, BiFeO 3 , is identified as the key factor that enables conformational control.

Abstract

A wide variety of processes controls the time of occurrence, duration, extent, and severity of river floods. Classifying flood events by their causative processes may assist in enhancing the accuracy of local and regional flood frequency estimates and support the detection and interpretation of any changes in flood occurrence and magnitudes. This paper provides a critical review of existing causative classifications of instrumental and preinstrumental series of flood events, discusses their validity and applications, and identifies opportunities for moving toward more comprehensive approaches. So far no unified definition of causative mechanisms of flood events exists. Existing frameworks for classification of instrumental and preinstrumental series of flood events adopt different perspectives: hydroclimatic (large‐scale circulation patterns and atmospheric state at the time of the event), hydrological (catchment scale precipitation patterns and antecedent catchment state), and hydrograph‐based (indirectly considering generating mechanisms through their effects on hydrograph characteristics). All of these approaches intend to capture the flood generating mechanisms and are useful for characterizing the flood processes at various spatial and temporal scales. However, uncertainty analyses with respect to indicators, classification methods, and data to assess the robustness of the classification are rarely performed which limits the transferability across different geographic regions. It is argued that more rigorous testing is needed. There are opportunities for extending classification methods to include indicators of space–time dynamics of rainfall, antecedent wetness, and routing effects, which will make the classification schemes even more useful for understanding and estimating floods.

239. Effect of Grain Boundary Cross-Section on the Performance of Electrodeposited Cu2O Photocathodes

Abstract

Large-grained Cu2O photocathodes in a superstrate configuration on a F-doped SnO2 (FTO) coated glass substrate are synthesized via two-step electrodeposition. Only submicrometer sized grains were obtained during single-step electrodeposition in the potential window (-0.31 to -0.7 V vs Ag/AgCl) of stable Cu2O formation. We observe reductive decomposition of the Cu2O to Cu metal in the potential range of -0.7 to -0.98 V; bulk reduction of Cu2+ in the solution to Cu metal occurs only beyond -0.98 V. In the potential window of stable Cu2O deposition, only the growth of the few nuclei occurs until a certain time. Minimal nucleation on the pristine FTO sites occurs during this period of deposition. The time to secondary nucleation is similar to 6 min at -0.31 V and similar to 15 s at -0.37 V. Interrupting the deposition at -0.31 V after 6 min and increasing the potential to -0.37 V leads to uniform, large grains (similar to 3 mu m) of Cu2O. Photoinduced conducting atomic force microscopy reveals shunting and the presence of sub-bandgap states at the grain boundaries of Cu2O. Also, the lower carrier concentration (similar to 1016 cm(-2)) in the large-grained Cu2O film obtained from Mott-Schottky analysis suggests a lower rate of Auger recombination. Thus, lowering the grain boundary cross-section in the two-step deposited film leads to a 30% increase in photocurrent at 0.0 V vs RHE.
