Model studies show that black carbon (BC) is, after CO2, the second strongest component of current global warming. In this study, microphysical and optical properties of BC-containing aerosol layers at mid-latitudes were investigated based on airborne in situ observations during the CONCERT 2011 field experiment. For the first time, the Single Particle Soot Photometer was operated onboard the research aircraft Falcon. Besides comprehensive results to BC in aerosol layers, this study shows the relevance of pyro-convective forest fires to the BC burden in the upper troposphere., Modellstudien zeigen, dass Ruß nach CO2 den zweitstärksten Beitrag zur globalen Erderwärmung aufweist. Basierend auf flugzeuggetragenen in-situ Beobachtungen und erstmals das Single Particle Soot Photometer auf dem Forschungsflugzeug Falcon verwendend, wurden in dieser Arbeit mikrophysikalische und optische Eigenschaften von rußenthaltenden Aerosolschichten in den mittleren Breiten untersucht. Neben umfassenden Informationen zu Ruß in Aerosolschichten verdeutlicht diese Arbeit unter anderem die Relevanz von pyro-konvektiven Waldbränden für die Rußbelastung in der oberen Troposphäre.

Als Vorläufergase von Ozon nehmen Stickoxide eine zentrale Rolle in der Atmosphärenchemie ein. Die großräumige Verteilung von Stickoxiden in der UTLS ist jedoch noch nicht hinreichend bekannt. In dieser Arbeit wurde die Verteilung von NO und NOy anhand von Stickoxidmessungen, die an Bord eines Linienflugzeugs durchgeführt werden, untersucht. Die NOy sowie die NO Mischungsverhältnisse zeigen klare saisonale und regionale Abhängigkeiten. Der Einfluss des Flugverkehrs auf die Stickoxide wird abgeschätzt. Ferner wurde das Messinstrument um einen NO2 Konverter erweitert., As an ozone precursor, nitrogen oxides play a key role in atmospheric chemistry. However, the large scale distribution of nitrogen oxides in the UTLS is not well known yet. This work focuses on the large scale NO and NOy distribution. Measurements were performed aboard a passenger aircraft. NOy and NO volume mixing ratios show clear seasonal and regional dependencies. The impact of aviation on the measured nitrogen oxide distribution was analyzed. As part of this work the NO/NOy-Instrument was enlarged by a photolytic NO2 converter.

Net ecosystem exchange of CO2 (NEE) was measured in a wind-throw-disturbed upland spruce forest in the Bavarian Forest National Park from 2009 to 2013, by the eddy covariance method. The results show that 1) low productive mountainous forest sites may switch from a carbon source to a carbon sink within relatively few years after disturbance, and 2) main uncertainties in process understanding originate from poorly resolved dynamics in soil respiration and succession of ground cover species development., Von 2009 bis 2013 wurde der Netto Ökosystemaustauch von CO2 über einem Windwurfgebiet im Bayerischen Wald mittels der Eddy Kovarianz Methode bestimmt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass 1) sich Standorte an langsam wachsenden Bergwäldern innerhalb weniger Jahre nach einer Störung von einer Kohlenstoffquelle wieder in eine Senke umwandeln dürften und 2) die hauptsächlichen Unsicherheiten beim Prozessverständnis in der Bodenrespiration und in der Entwicklung der Bodenvegetation begründet sind.

I investigated the changes in greenhouse gas fluxes of a prealpine bog after restoration. Short- and long-term restoration was effective in GHG reduction and vegetation shift on former ditches. Long-term restoration on drier sites led to natural like vegetation and GHG balances. Rising water tables caused CH4 emissions, which were overcompensated by reduced CO2 releases and raised plant productivity. On a bog meadow, rewetting reduced the GHG emissions to the half up to neutral balances. Ending management and establishment of Sphagnum turned the sites into strong sinks for GHG., Die Renaturierung eines präalpinen Hochmoors führte rasch zur Reduktionen der Treibhausgasflüsse und einem Vegetationswechsel auf ehemaligen Gräben. This study is a systematic comprehensive investigation of PM exposure in Beijing. It provides a clear source apportionment of PM in all seasons, especially during haze episodes. The results show that secondary inorganic ion formation and biomass burning are the main sources for haze in summer and autumn, winter haze is dominated by a mixture of different sources especially by coal combustion, while spring haze is mainly caused by mineral dust. Backward trajectory analyses showed that the southerly industrial regions are the main sources of particles during haze in Beijing., Diese Arbeit ist eine systematische, umfassende Untersuchung der Partikelbelastung in Peking. Peatlands are hotspots in terms of the global carbon cycle. Depending on land use they can be long-term carbon sinks or sources. In the present study the CO2 and CH4 exchange of an afforested and drained bog forest and a natural bog-pine ecosystem were investigated by eddy-covariance measurements. Currently, the drained forest is a stronger net carbon sink, because the carbon fixation of the afforested spruces can offset carbon losses from the peat. However, this balance is very sensitive towards changing environmental forcing, whereas the natural ecosystem emerged as a small but robust and stable carbon sink., Moore sind Hotspots bezüglich des globalen Kohlenstoff (C)-Kreislaufs. Das naturnahe Moorwaldökosystem zeigt sich zwar nur als geringe, aber dafür stetige und robuste C-Senke.

PURPOSE: Temporary drainage of the upper urinary tract by use of internal ureteral stents is a common procedure that is often associated with a variety of symptoms. The role of intravesical stent position in associated morbidity is controversial. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The German version of the ureteral stent symptom questionnaire (USSQ) was completed by 73 patients with an indwelling ureteral stent the day before stent removal. Intravesical stent position was classified into 3 categories by x-ray before stent removal. The influence of intravesical stent position on USSQ score was analyzed, including subscores and single items. RESULTS: Intravesical stent position showed no significant influence on associated morbidity. The median USSQ total score in all patients was 77.5 (range, 30-147). Patients with ipsilateral stents (69.0; range, 30-122) tended to have lower total scores than did those with tangential (86.5; range, 30-122) or contralateral (77.0; range, 31-147) stents, but the differences were not statistically significant (p=0.35). The USSQ subscores for urinary symptoms (p=0.80), body pain (p=0.80), general health (p=0.16), work performance (p=0.07), additional problems (p=0.81), and all of the USSQ single items of interest in the context of stent length also did not differ significantly between the three groups. CONCLUSIONS: Intravesical stent position did not significantly influence associated morbidity in our study. An appropriate stent length should be chosen to avoid dislocation. However, complex calculations of optimum stent length, time-consuming manipulations, and costly stock holding of various stent sizes to obtain the perfect stent position do not seem worthwhile.
