Heat stress (HS) is a major welfare and economic issue in the swine industry. However, it is not a trivial task to appropriately quantify the environmental HS. Therefore, this study aimed to 1) define the critical periods and environmental descriptors (based on public weather station information) to evaluate heat tolerance (HT); and 2) estimate genetic parameters for HT in Large White pigs. The traits included in this study were: weaning weight (WW; kg), off-test weight (OTW; kg), total number of piglets born (TNB), number of piglets born alive (NBA), and number of piglets weaned (WN). The number of phenotypic records ranged from 6,059 (WN) to 172,984 (TNB), and genotypes were available for 8,686 animals. Seven climatic variables (maximum, minimum and average temperatures, average relative humidity, dew point, discomfort index and temperature-humidity index) based on public weather station records were compared based on three criteria [GxE estimate as measured by the slope term; theoretical accuracy of the genomic estimated breeding values (GEBV); deviation of GEBV per environmental value]. Relative humidity (for WN and WW) and maximum temperature (for OTW, TNB, and NBA) are the recommended environmental gradients for the studied traits. The acute HS (average of 30 days before measurement date) was the critical period recommended for OTW. For WN and WW, a period of 34 days prior to farrowing up to weaning is recommended. For TNB and NBA, the critical period of 20 days prior breeding to 30 days into gestation is recommended. In general, WN and WW were largely affected by the environment, while the remaining traits showed moderate correlations (OTW, TNB, and NBA). Heritabilities estimated for HT ranged from 0.08 (WW) to 0.25 (OTW). In summary, these results suggest that there is genotype-by-environment interaction for all traits analyzed, and genetic progress can be achieved through genetic selection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In utero heat stress (IUHS) has several postnatal consequences in pigs that compromise health, increase stress response, and reduce performance. These phenotypes may be caused by epigenetic modifications such as DNA methylation, which are heritable molecular modifications that impact gene expression and phenotypic outcomes without changing the DNA sequence. Therefore, we aimed to compare the DNA methylation profiles between in-utero thermoneutral (IUTN) and IUHS pigs to identify differentially methylated regions. Twentyfour pregnant gilts were evenly assigned to either a thermoneutral (17.5 ± 2.1°C) or heat stress (cycling 26 to 36°C) chamber from d 0 to 59 of gestation, followed by thermoneutral conditions (20.9 ± 2.3°C) for the rest of gestation and until the piglets were weaned. At 105 d of age, 10 IUTN and 10 IUHS piglets were euthanized and Longissimus dorsi muscle samples were collected and used to perform whole-genome bisulfite sequencing (WGBS). Purified genomic DNA was fragmented and bisulfite conversion was performed. Illumina platforms were used to sequence WGBS libraries. All pigs had similar proportions of methylation at CpG sites. Twohundred-sixty-eight genomic regions were differentially methylated between IUTN and IUHS pigs. These identified regions are located across all pig chromosomes and ranged from 2 (SSC18) to 40 (SSC10). Eighty-five unique differentially-methylated genes were identified. These genes have been reported to be involved in key biological processes such as transcriptional repressor activity and tRNA processing (e.g., SKOR2, TRMT6, TSEN2), cellular response to heat stress (e.g., CCAR2), placental vascularization (e.g., FZD5), central nervous system (e.g.,VEPH1), cholesterol biosynthesis (e.g., CYB5R1), insulin receptor substrate (e.g.,IRS2), synaptic transmission (e.g.,RIMBP2), neurotrophic factor receptor activity (e.g.,LIFR), immune response (e.g., CD84), DNA repair (e.g., CHD1L), and cell proliferation and endocrine signaling (e.g., SSTR1, CYB5R1). Genetic selection for improved feed efficiency and lean growth in pigs has resulted in reduced intramuscular fat content. The aim of this study was to evaluate growth performance, carcass traits, and meat quality in genetically lean immunocastrated pigs grouped based on divergent Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF) values. The WBSF values of the longissimus lumborum (LL) muscle were obtained from a previous trial evaluating 4 diets, 6 replicates per diet, and 3 pigs per pen, summing up to 72 Large White immunocastrated male pigs. Pigs (initial BW = 28.44 ± 2.95 kg) were fed diets containing either 1.5% soybean oil (CON) or 3% soybean oil (SO), canola oil (CO), or fish oil (FO) in a 98-d study. The original dataset was used to segregate pigs into 2 treatments: high (5.4 to 4.3 kg) and low (3.8 to 2.8 kg) WBSF. The SO diet did not show extreme values for WBSF and was not included in the resulting dataset, which comprised 2 treatments (high- and low-WBSF), 3 blocks (CON, CO, and FO), and 6 replicates per treatment (12 experimental units). No significant differences were observed for growth performance between WBSF groups. When compared with low-WBSF pigs, high-WBSF pigs tended to have decreased (P = 0.07) backfat thickness and intramuscular fat content in the LL and greater (P = 0.09) carcass lean percentage and cooking losses. Oleic acid concentration was less (P = 0.05) in the LL intramuscular fat of high-than low-WBSF pigs. There were statistical tendencies for decreased (P = 0.06) total monounsaturated fatty acids and increased (P = 0.09) total polyunsaturated fatty acids concentrations in the LL intramuscular fat of high-than low-WBSF pigs. In conclusion, immunocastrated male pigs with tender meat had improved nutritional attributes of pork, with no effects on feed efficiency and carcass traits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this experiment was to compare the effects of tail docking and teeth clipping on the growth and behavior of pigs. Pigs (n = 126) from 21 litters (6 pigs/litter) were blocked by birth weight, and assigned at 3 d of age within blocks to either teeth clipping and tail docking (processed) or control (sham-processed). Vocalizations of pigs were recorded during the procedures, and behavior was observed during the lactation, nursery, and growing periods. Blood samples were collected on d 21 to measure semm IgG concentrations. Wounds on the body and tail were assessed by inspecting both sides of the body and tail at 70, 110, and 160 d of age, whereas BW were recorded at 10, 21, 70, and 160 d of age. Fat and LM depths were measured ultrasonically on growing pigs at 160 d of age. Clipped and docked pigs vocalized more (1.06 vs. 0.62 s; P < 0.01) during processing, and processed pigs were observed lying alone more often (P = 0.03) during the 3 d after processing and the entire suckling period; however, teeth clipping and docking did not (P ≥ 0.14) alter the frequency that pigs spent suckling, standing, huddling, playing/fighting, or sitting during the first 3 d or between 5 and 15 d after processing. Social behavior during the nursery (P ≥ 0.23) and grower phases (P ≥ 0.18) was unaffected by clipping and docking, but processed pigs rested more (P = 0.03) during the nursery period and were less (P ≤ 0.01) interested in exploratory behaviors during both phases, especially during pen (P ≤ 0.04) and enrichment investigations (P ≤ 0.02). Teeth clipping and tail docking reduced ADG between 10 and 21 d ÇP = 0.01) and 21 to 70 d of age(P = 0.04), resulting in lighter BW at 21 (P = 0.01) and 70 d of age (P = 0.08) compared with sham-processed pigs. However, 160-d BW (P = 0.62), d 70 to 160 ADG (P = 0.23), and G:F (P ≥ 0.15) were not affected by teeth clipping and tail docking. Additionally, there was no difference between sham and processed pigs for fat depth (P ≥ 0.05), LM depth (P = 0.93), or estimated percent muscle (P = 0.27). Even though tail docking and teeth clipping appear to produce short-term pain and distress, results of this experiment indicate that leaving the teeth and tails intact have no detrimental effects on mortality, morbidity, live performance, or carcass merit of growing-finishing pigs.
