Transformations are essential for dealing with geographic information. They are involved not only in converting between geodata formats and reference systems, but also in turning geodata into useful information according to some purpose. However, since a transformation can be implemented in various formats and tools, its function and purpose usually remains hidden underneath the technicalities of a workflow. To automate geographic information procedures, we therefore need to model the transformations implemented by workflows on a conceptual level, as a form of procedural knowledge. Although core concepts of spatial information provide a useful level of description in this respect, we currently lack a model for the space of possible transformations between such concepts. In this article, we present the algebra of core concept transformations (CCT). It consists of a type hierarchy which models core concepts as relations, and a set of basic transformations described in terms of function signatures that use such types. Type inference allows us to enrich GIS workflows with abstract machine-readable metadata, by compiling algebraic tool descriptions. This allows us to automatically infer goal concepts across workflows and to query over such concepts across raster and vector implementations. We evaluate the algebra over a set of expert GIS workflows taken from online tutorials.

Severe malarial anemia (SMA) is a leading cause of childhood morbidity and mortality in holoendemic Plasmodium falciparum transmission regions. To gain enhanced understanding of predisposing factors for SMA, we explored the relationship between complement component 3 (C3) missense mutations [rs2230199 (2307C>G, Arg>Gly102) and rs11569534 (34420G>A, Gly>Asp1224)], malaria, and SMA in a cohort of children (n = 1617 children) over 36 months of follow-up. Variants were selected based on their ability to impart amino acid substitutions that can alter the structure and function of C3. The 2307C>G mutation results in a basic to a polar residue change (Arg to Gly) at position 102 (β-chain) in the macroglobulin-1 (MG1) domain, while 34420G>A elicits a polar to acidic residue change (Gly to Asp) at position 1224 (α-chain) in the thioester-containing domain. After adjusting for multiple comparisons, longitudinal analyses revealed that inheritance of the homozygous mutant (GG) at 2307 enhanced the risk of SMA (RR = 2.142, 95%CI: 1.229–3.735, P = 0.007). The haplotype containing both wild-type alleles (CG) decreased the incident risk ratio of both malaria (RR = 0.897, 95%CI: 0.828–0.972, P = 0.008) and SMA (RR = 0.617, 95%CI: 0.448–0.848, P = 0.003). Malaria incident risk ratio was also reduced in carriers of the GG (Gly102Gly1224) haplotype (RR = 0.941, 95%CI: 0.888–0.997, P = 0.040). Collectively, inheritance of the missense mutations in MG1 and thioester-containing domain influence the longitudinal risk of malaria and SMA in children exposed to intense Plasmodium falciparum transmission.

Supplemental Digital Content is available in the text., Background: The study purpose was to assess: (1) the complication rate of osteodistraction in the pediatric upper extremity, its severity and relation to patient-specific and treatment-specific parameters, and (2) dedicated patient-reported outcome scores after these procedures. Methods: This retrospective study analyzed a chart of patients undergoing osteodistraction of the upper limb between 2003 and 2020. Demographics, distraction-specific parameters, healing index, and any complications graded according to the Sink grading scale (grades 1 to 5) were extracted. An additional phone interview was performed to assess patient satisfaction and functionality of the elongated limb using the Quick-DASH (Disabilities of Arm, Shoulder, and Hand) score. Results: This study included 61 cases from 48 individual patients. The mean age at the start of distraction was 11.5±3.6 years. The ulna was the most frequently lengthened bone, with 21 (34.4%) cases. Ninety-four complications were observed, with an average complication rate of 77.0%. Based on the Sink grading scale (1 to 5), grade 3 complications were most common (n=29; 47.5%) followed by grade 1 (n=14; 23.0%), 2 (n=14; 23.0%), and 4 (n=4; 6.6%). A significantly lower and thus better bone healing index was observed for the age category less than 10 years compared with the 14 to 18 years group (P=0.006). The average satisfaction was 4.2±1.0 points of 5. The mean Quick-DASH score was 14.1±12.5, indicating very good clinical outcomes. Conclusions: Despite the occurrence of numerous complications, high patient satisfaction and good daily life functionality of the treated limb was observed. An age of more than 14 years at the beginning of therapy had a negative prognostic effect on bone healing during distraction. Thus, osteodistraction in the upper extremity may preferably be performed less than 10 years of age because of enhanced bone regeneration. Level of Evidence: Level IV—retrospective case series.

Background Studies document that adults in disadvantaged socio-economic positions have elevated risks of a severe course of COVID-19, but it is unclear if this holds true for children. We investigate in this population-based study whether young people from socio-economically disadvantaged households in Germany had a higher risk of COVID-19 hospitalization compared with more affluent counterparts. We also examined if differences were related to comorbidities that predict severe courses in children. Methods We included data from all 690,115 children and adolescents (0-18 years) enrolled in a statutory health insurance carrier. Daily hospital diagnoses of COVID-19 were recorded from 1.1.2020 to 13.7.2021. Logistic regressions were used to compare children from households with an indication of poverty (e.g. long- or short-term unemployed) with children from households with insurance holders in regular employment. We also assessed socio-economic characteristics of the area of residence. We controlled for age, sex, days under observation, nationality, and comorbidities (e.g. obesity). Findings A COVID-19 hospital diagnosis was a rare event (n = 1637). Children of long-term unemployed parents had a 1·36 times (95% CI 1·21-1·51) higher adjusted odds of hospitalization compared with those of employed parents. Elevated odds were also found for short-term unemployed or low-wage employment. Those living in poor areas had a 3·02 (1·81-5·22) higher odds of hospitalization than those in less deprived areas. Comorbidities were strongly related to hospitalization, but their adjustment did not change main estimates for household deprivation. Discussion Results suggest that children from poor households are at higher risk of severe courses of COVID-19 than their affluent counterparts. This underlies the need to implement effective Public Health strategies to protect deprived children from COVID-19 and other infectious disease even in high income countries such as Germany. Key messages • Children and adolescents from poor families seem to be at higer risk for sever courses of COVID-19. • Comorbidities were no key mediating factor in this study.

Due to the increasing prevalence and relevance of geo-spatial data in the age of data science, Geographic Information Systems are enjoying wider interdisciplinary adoption by communities outside of GIScience. However, properly interpreting and analysing geo-spatial information is not a trivial task due to knowledge barriers. There is a need for a trans-disciplinary framework for sharing specialized geographical knowledge and expertise to overcome these barriers. The core concepts of spatial information were proposed as such a conceptual framework. These concepts, such as object and field, were proposed as cognitive lenses that can simplify understanding of and guide the processing of spatial information. However, there is a distinct lack of empirical evidence for the existence of such concepts in the human mind or whether such concepts can be indeed useful. In this study, we have explored for such empirical evidence using behavioral experiments with human participants. The experiment adopted a contrast model to investigate whether the participants can semantically distinguish between the object and field core concepts visualized as maps. The statistically significant positive results offer evidence supporting the existence of the two concepts or cognitive concepts closely resembling them. This gives credibility to the core concepts of spatial information as tools for sharing, teaching, or even automating the process of geographical information processing.
