Aims. Combining 66 ultraviolet (UV) spectra and ancillary data from the recent Low-Redshift Lyman Continuum Survey (LzLCS) and 23 LyC observations by earlier studies, we form a statistical sample of star-forming galaxies at z similar to 0.2-0.4 with which we study the role of cold interstellar medium (ISM) gas in the leakage of ionizing radiation. We also aim to establish empirical relations between the H I neutral and low-ionization state (LIS) absorption lines with different galaxy properties. Methods. We first constrain the massive star content (stellar ages and metallicities) and UV attenuation by fitting the stellar continuum with a combination of simple stellar population models. The models, together with accurate LyC flux measurements, allow us to determine the absolute LyC photon escape fraction for each galaxy (f(esc)(abs)). We then measure the equivalent widths and residual fluxes of multiple H I and LIS lines, and the geometrical covering fraction of the UV emission, adopting the picket-fence model. Results. The LyC escape fraction spans a wide range, with a median f(esc)(abs) (0.16, 0.84 quantiles) of 0.04 (0.02, 0.20), and 50 out of the 89 galaxies detected in the LyC (1 sigma upper limits of f(esc)(abs) less than or similar to 0.01 for non-detections, typically). The H I and LIS line equivalent widths scale with the UV luminosity and attenuation, and inversely with the residual flux of these lines. Additionally, Ly alpha equivalent widths scale with both the H I and LIS residual fluxes, but anti-correlate with the corresponding H I or LIS equivalent widths. The H I and LIS residual fluxes are correlated, indicating that the neutral gas is spatially traced by the low-ionization transitions. We find that the observed trends of the absorption lines and the UV attenuation are primarily driven by the geometric covering fraction of the gas. Dark matter haloes that reach the H i-cooling mass without prior star formation or external metal pollution represent potential sites for the formation of small - extremely faint - Population III galaxies at high redshifts. Gravitational lensing may in rare cases boost their fluxes to detectable levels, but to find even a small number of such objects in randomly selected regions of the sky requires very large areas to be surveyed. Because of this, a small, wide-field telescope can in principle offer better detection prospects than a large telescope with a smaller field of view. Here, we derive the minimum comoving number density required to allow gravitational lensing to lift such objects at redshift z = 5-16 above the detection thresholds of blind surveys carried out with the James Webb space telescope (JWST), the Roman space telescope (RST) and Euclid. We find that the prospects for photometric detections of Pop III galaxies are promising, and that they are better for RST than for JWST and Euclid. However, the Pop III galaxies favoured by current simulations have number densities too low to allow spectroscopic detections based on the strength of the He ii1640 emission line in any of the considered surveys unless very high star formation efficiencies (epsilon greater than or similar to 0.1) are evoked. We argue that targeting individual cluster lenses instead of the wide-field surveys considered in this paper results in better spectroscopic detection prospects, while for photometric detection, the wide-field surveys perform considerably better.

Context. There is ample evidence that dust is already present in abundance at high redshift. However, given the faintness of distant galaxies in the optical and the near-infrared, the data are limited and the understanding of how the dust a ffects the emerging radiation of galaxies at very high redshift is still limited.Aims. Using the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate [C II] at Early times (ALPINE), our objective is to quantify the dust attenuation properties in galaxies at z = 4.4-5.5, particularly with regard to the shape of their attenuation curve.Methods. Using the CIGALE spectral energy distribution (SED) code, we modeled the stellar populations and their interactions with the dust to measure some of the physical properties of the ALPINE sample. We selected a subsample of 23 main-sequence galaxies requiring a detection in at least six bands in the rest-frame UV and optical, as well as in the dust continuum around 158 mu m or the [C II] fine-structure line. The inclusion of this line is important for improving the constraints on the physical properties, while achieving a reasonably low uncertainty on the slope of the attenuation curves.Results. We find that the attenuation curves span a broad range of properties - from curves that are much steeper than the SMC extinction curve to those that are shallower than the starburst attenuation curve. The shape of the attenuation curves strongly depends on the V-band attenuation. Galaxies with the lowest attenuation also present the steepest curves. The steepness of such curves probably results from the combination of the intrinsic physical properties of the dust, the relative distribution of stars and dust in the interstellar medium, and the di fferential reddening, with an important fraction of the dust concentrated in star-forming regions. Mid- and far-infrared (IR) photometric and spectroscopic observations are fundamental to a full understanding of the dust-obscured Universe and the evolution of both star formation and black hole accretion in galaxies. In this work, using the specifications of the SPace Infrared telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics (SPICA) as a baseline, we investigate the capability to study the dust-obscured Universe of mid- and far-IR photometry at 34 and 70 µm and low-resolution spectroscopy at 17−36 µm using the state-of-the-art SpectroPhotometric Realisations of Infrared-selected Targets at all-z (SPRITZ) simulation. This investigation is also compared to the expected performance of the Origins Space Telescope and the Galaxy Evolution Probe. The photometric view of the Universe of a SPICA-like mission could cover not only bright objects (e.g. LIR > 1012 L) up to z = 10, but also normal galaxies (LIR < 1011 L) up to z ∼ 4. At the same time, the spectroscopic observations of such mission could also allow us to estimate the redshifts and study the physical properties for thousands of star-forming galaxies and active galactic nuclei by observing the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and a large set of IR nebular emission lines. In this way, a cold, 2.5-m size space telescope with spectro-photometric capability analogous to SPICA, could provide us with a complete three-dimensional (i.e. images and integrated spectra) view of the dust-obscured Universe and the physics governing galaxy evolution up to z ∼ 4.

We present a Spitzer/IRAC survey of H-faint (H-160 greater than or similar to 26.4, < 5 sigma) sources in 101 lensing cluster fields. Across a CANDELS/Wide-like survey area of similar to 648 arcmin(2) (effectively similar to 221 arcmin(2) in the source plane), we have securely discovered 53 sources in the IRAC Channel-2 band (CH2, 4.5 mu m; median CH2 = 22.46 +/- 0.11 AB mag) that lack robust HST/WFC3-IR F160W counterparts. The most remarkable source in our sample, namely ES-009 in the field of Abell 2813, is the brightest H-faint galaxy at 4.5 mu m known so far (CH2 = 20.48 +/- 0.03 AB mag). We show that the H-faint sources in our sample are massive (median M-star = 10 10.3 +/- 0.3 M-circle dot, star-forming (median star formation rate =1001 M-circle dot yr(-1)), and dust-obscured (A(v) = 2.6 +/- 0.3) galaxies around a median photometric redshift of z = 3.9 +/- 0.4. The stellar continua of 14 H-faint galaxies can be resolved in the CH2 band, suggesting a median circularized effective radius (R-e,R-circ; lensing corrected) of 1.9 +/- 0.2 kpc and

We present bright [C ii] 158 mu m line detections from a strongly magnified and multiply imaged (mu similar to 20-160) sub-L* (MUV=-19.75-0.44+0.55) Lyman-break galaxy (LBG) at z = 6.0719 +/- 0.0004, drawn from the ALMA Lensing Cluster Survey (ALCS). Emission lines are identified at 268.7 GHz at >= 8 sigma exactly at the positions of two multiple images of the LBG, behind the massive galaxy cluster RXCJ0600-2007. Our lens models, updated with the latest spectroscopy from VLT/MUSE, indicate that a sub region of the LBG crosses the caustic, and is lensed into a long (similar to 6 '') arc with a local magnification of mu similar to 160, for which the [C ii] line is also significantly detected. The source plane reconstruction resolves the interstellar medium (ISM) structure, showing that the [C ii] line is co-spatial with the rest-frame UV continuum at a scale of similar to 300 pc. The [C ii] line properties suggest that the LBG is a rotation-dominated system, whose velocity gradient explains a slight difference in redshifts between the whole LBG and its sub-region. The star formation rate (SFR)-L-[CII] relations, for whole and sub-regions of the LBG, are consistent with those of local galaxies. We evaluate the lower limit of the faint-end of the [C ii] luminosity function at z = 6, finding it to be consistent with predictions from semi-analytical models and from the local SFR-L-[CII] relation with a SFR function at z = 6. These results imply that the local SFR-L-[CII] relation is universal for a wide range of scales, including the spatially resolved ISM, the whole region of the galaxy, and the cosmic scale, even in the epoch of reionization.

We study six luminous Lyman-alpha emitters (LAEs) with very blue rest-frame UV continua at $5.7\le z \le 6.6$. These LAEs have previous HST and Spitzer IRAC observations. Combining our newly acquired HST images, we find that their UV-continuum slopes $\beta$ are in a range of $-3.4\le \beta \le -2.6$. Unlike previous, tentative detections of $\beta \simeq -3$ in photometrically selected, low-luminosity galaxies, our LAEs are spectroscopically confirmed and luminous ($M_{\rm UV}<-20$ mag). We model their broadband spectral energy distributions (SEDs), and find that two $\beta\simeq-2.6\pm0.2$ galaxies can be well fitted with young and dust-free stellar populations. However, it becomes increasingly difficult to fit bluer galaxies. We explore further interpretations by including non-zero LyC escape fraction $f_{\rm esc}$, very low metallicities, and/or AGN contributions. Assuming $f_{\rm esc}\simeq0.2$, we achieve the bluest slopes $\beta\simeq-2.7$ when nebular emission is considered. This can nearly explain the SEDs of two galaxies with $\beta\simeq-2.8$ and --2.9 ($\sigma_{\beta}=0.15$). Larger $f_{\rm esc}$ values and very low metallicities are not favored by the strong nebular line emission (evidenced by the IRAC flux) or the observed (IRAC 1 - IRAC 2) color. Finally, we find that the $\beta\simeq-2.9$ galaxy can potentially be well explained by the combination of a very young population with a high $f_{\rm esc}$ ($\ge0.5$) and an old, dusty population. We are not able to produce two $\beta \simeq -3.4 \pm0.4$ galaxies. MOSAIC is the planned multi-object spectrograph for the 39m Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). Conceived as a multi-purpose instrument, it offers both high multiplex and multi-IFU capabilities at a range of intermediate to high spectral resolving powers in the visible and the near-infrared. MOSAIC will enable unique spectroscopic surveys of the faintest sources, from the oldest stars in the Galaxy and beyond to the first populations of galaxies that completed the reionisation of the Universe--while simultaneously opening up a wide discovery space. In this contribution we present the status of the instrument ahead of Phase B, showcasing the key science cases as well as introducing the updated set of top level requirements and the adopted architecture. The high readiness level will allow MOSAIC to soon enter the construction phase, with the goal to provide the ELT community with a world-class MOS capability as soon as possible after the telescope first light., Comment: Accepted to SPIE

GN-z11 was photometrically selected as a luminous star-forming galaxy candidate at redshift z > 10 based on Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging data. Follow-up HST near-infrared grism observations detected a continuum break that was explained as the Ly-alpha break corresponding to z = 11.09 (+0.08-0.12). However, its accurate redshift remained unclear. Here we report a probable detection of three ultraviolet (UV) emission lines from GN-z11, which can be interpreted as the [C III] 1907, C III] 1909 doublet and O III] 1666 at z = 10.957+/-0.001 (when the Universe was only ~420 Myr old, or ~3% of its current age). This is consistent with the redshift of the previous grism observations, supporting GN-z11 as the most distant galaxy known to date. Its UV lines likely originate from dense ionized gas that is rarely seen at low redshifts, and its strong [C III] and C III] emission is partly due to an active galactic nucleus (AGN) or enhanced carbon abundance. GN-z11 is luminous and young, yet moderately massive, implying a rapid build-up of stellar mass in the past. One of the outstanding problems of current observational cosmology is to understand the nature of sources that produced the bulk of the ionizing radiation after the Cosmic Dark Age. Direct detection of these reionization sources is practically infeasible at high redshift due to the steep decline of intergalactic medium transmission. However, a number of low-redshift analogs emitting Lyman continuum at~900 Angstrom ~restframe are now detected at $z< 0.4$ and there are detections in the range $ 2.5< z< 3.5$ also. Here, we report the detection of Lyman continuum emission with a high escape fraction (>20%) from a low-mass clumpy galaxy at z=1.42, in the middle of the redshift range where no detection has been made before and near the peak of the Cosmic Star-formation history. The observation was made in the Hubble Extreme Deep field by the wide-field Ultra-Violet-Imaging Telescope onboard AstroSat. This is the first detection of Extreme Ultraviolet radiation from a distant galaxy at a rest-frame wavelength of 600 Angstrom, and it opens up a new window to constrain the shape of the ionization spectrum. We propose a new mission called Space Project for Astrophysical and Cosmological Exploration (SPACE) as part on the ESA long term planning Voyage 2050 programme. SPACE will study galaxy evolution at the earliest times, with the key goals of charting the formation of the heavy elements, measuring the evolution of the galaxy luminosity function, tracing the build-up of stellar mass in galaxies over cosmic time, and finding the first super-massive black holes (SMBHs) to form. The mission will exploit a unique region of the parameter space, between the narrow ultra-deep surveys with HST and JWST, and shallow wide-field surveys such as Roman Space Telescope and EUCLID, and should yield by far the largest sample of any current or planned mission of very high redshift galaxies at z > 10 which are sufficiently bright for detailed follow-up spectroscopy. Crucially, we propose a wide-field spectroscopic near-IR + mid-IR capability which will greatly enhance our understanding of the first galaxies by detecting and identifying a statistical sample of the first galaxies and the first SMBH, and to chart the metal enrichment history of galaxies in the early Universe - potentially finding signatures of the very first stars to form from metal-free primordial gas. The wide-field and wavelength range of SPACE will also provide us a unique opportunity to study star formation by performing a wide survey of the Milky Way in the near-IR + mid-IR. We present the first [CII] 158 $\mu$m luminosity function (LF) at $z\sim 5$ from a sample of serendipitous lines detected in the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate [CII] at Early times (ALPINE). A search performed over the 118 ALPINE pointings revealed several serendipitous lines. Based on their fidelity, we selected 14 lines for the final catalog. According to the redshift of their counterparts, we identified 8 out of 14 detections as [CII] lines at $z\sim 5$, and two as CO transitions at lower redshifts. The remaining 4 lines have an elusive identification in the available catalogs and we considered them as [CII] candidates. We used the 8 confirmed [CII] and the 4 [CII] candidates to build one of the first [CII] LFs at $z\sim 5$. We found that 11 out of these 12 sources have a redshift very similar to that of the ALPINE target in the same pointing, suggesting the presence of overdensities around the targets. Therefore, we split the sample in two (a "clustered" and "field" sub-sample) according to their redshift separation and built two separate LFs. Our estimates suggest that there could be an evolution of the [CII] LF between $z \sim 5$ and $z \sim 0$. By converting the [CII] luminosity to star formation rate we evaluated the cosmic star formation rate density (SFRD) at $z\sim 5$. The clustered sample results in a SFRD $\sim 10$ times higher than previous measurements from UV-selected galaxies. On the other hand, from the field sample (likely representing the average galaxy population) we derived a SFRD $\sim 1.6$ higher compared to current estimates from UV surveys but compatible within the errors. Because of the large uncertainties, observations of larger samples are necessary to better constrain the SFRD at $z\sim 5$. We present the physical extent of [C II] 158 mu m line-emitting gas from 46 star-forming galaxies at z.=.4-6 from the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate C II at Early Times (ALPINE). Using exponential profile fits, we measure the effective radius of the [C II] line (r(e),([C II])) for individual galaxies and compare them with the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) continuum (re, UV) from Hubble Space Telescope images. The effective radius r(e),([C II]) exceeds r(e, UV) by factors of similar to 2-3, and the ratio of r(e),([C II])/r(e, UV) increases as a function of M-star. We do not find strong evidence that the [C II] line, rest-frame UV, and far-infrared (FIR) continuum are always displaced over similar or equal to 1 kpc scale from each other. We identify 30% of isolated ALPINE sources as having an extended [C II] component over 10 kpc scales detected at 4.1s-10.9s beyond the size of rest-frame UV and FIR continuum. One object has tentative rotating features up to similar to 10 kpc, where the 3D model fit shows the rotating [C II]-gas disk spread over 4 times larger than the rest-frame UV-emitting region. Galaxies with the extended [C II] line structure have high star formation rate, high stellar mass (M-star), low Ly alpha equivalent width, and more blueshifted (redshifted) rest-frame UV metal absorption (Ly alpha line), as compared to galaxies without such extended [C II] structures. Although we cannot rule out the possibility that a selection bias toward luminous objects may be responsible for such trends, the star-formation-driven outflow also explains all these trends. Deeper observations are essential to test whether the extended [C II] line structures are ubiquitous to high-z star-forming galaxies.

We report on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) detection of the Lyman-continuum (LyC) radiation emitted by a galaxy at redshift z = 3.794 dubbed Ion1. The LyC from Ion1 is detected at 820-890 A with HST WFC3/UVIS in the F410M band (m(410) = 27.60 0.36 m(AB), peak signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) = 4.17 in an r = 012 aperture) and 700-830 A with the Very Large Telescope (VLT)/VIMOS in the U band (m(U) = 27.84 0.19 m(AB), peak S/N = 6.7 with an r = 06 aperture). A 20 hr VLT/VIMOS spectrum shows low- and high-ionization interstellar metal absorption lines and the P Cygni profile of C iv and Ly alpha in absorption. The latter spectral feature differs from what observed in known LyC emitters, which show strong Ly alpha emission. An HST far-UV color map reveals that the LyC emission escapes from a region of the galaxy that is bluer than the rest. The F410M image shows that the centroid of the LyC emission is offset from the centroid of the nonionizing UV emission by 012 003, corresponding to 0.85 0.21 kpc, and that its morphology is likely moderately resolved. These morphological characteristics favor a scenario where the LyC photons produced by massive stars escape from low H i column density "cavities" in the interstellar medium. We also collect the VIMOS U-band images of 107 Lyman-break galaxies at 3.40 z(spec) <3.95, i.e., sampling the LyC, and stack them with inverse-variance weights. No LyC emission is detected in the stacked image, resulting in a 32.5 m(AB) flux limit (1 sigma) and an upper limit of absolute LyC escape fraction f(esc)(abs)
