Abstract

We discuss the possibility of an intermediate-spin ground state for a d5 (d6) system. The intermediate-spin state is stabilized by the relative stability of the ligand hole state that it hybridizes with. Using atomic multiplet calculations we showed that an intermediate-spin ground state is possible for Co4+ (d5) when the d6L state dominates the ground state. From a comparison of the experimental Co 2p x-ray absorption spectroscopy spectrum with the calculated one we assume an intermediate-spin ground state for SrCoO3. The intermediate-spin ground state is a highly symmetrical state with high-spin Co d6 ions on each site. Each oxygen then contributes 1/3 hole which is antiferromagnetically coupled to both neighboring Co ions. In this way the itinerant oxygen holes couple the high-spin Co d6 ions ferromagnetically. With this model of oxygen holes that introduce ferromagnetic correlations we can also explain the spin-glass behavior for slightly doped LaCoO3.

Abstract

We report on an x-ray absorption and resonant photoemission study on single crystals of the high-T-c cuprates La2-xSrxCuO4 and Nd2-xCexCuO4-delta. Using an intrinsic energy reference, we find that the chemical potential of La2-xSrxCuO4 lies near the top of the La2CuO4 valence band whereas in Nd2-xCexCuO4-delta it is situated near the bottom of the Nd2CuO4 conduction band. The data clearly establish that the introduction of Ce in Nd2CuO4 results in electrons being doped into the CuO2 planes. We infer that the states closest to the chemical potential have a Cu 3d(10) singlet origin in Nd2-xCexCuO4-delta and a 3d(9) (L) under bar singlet origin in La2-xSrxCuO4., QC 20100525

Abstract

A contribution to superexchange coming from empty oxygen orbitals is pointed out. We also estimate the small anisotropy of the in-plane superexchange, as well as the superexchange between two adjacent layers in the specific YBa 2 Cu 3 O 6 compound. In doped compounds, we improve the description of the transport properties of Zhang-Rice singlets over the simple t-J model. Particularly important for the bandwidth is the role of what we call t ′ unequal spins and t '' unequal spins . When more than one doped hole is present in the system, the interaction between holes becomes rapidly non-negligible: two Zhang-Rice singlets placed on neighboring cells highly repel each other. Some aspects of oxygen spin dynamics are discussed, in connection with NMR experiments.

Abstract

In this paper we give a description of the doping dependence of the Ni 2p x-ray-absorption spectra of MxNi1−xO (M=Li,Na). We will show that a description beyond an atomic-multiplet calculation is required. To study intermediate doping levels use will be made of a two-metal-site cluster, where one side functions as a hole reservoir. From this study it follows that holes are most likely on the oxygen atoms of the NiO6 units around the Li impurities

Abstract

State-of-the-art electronic-structure calculations based on the local-density approximation (LDA) to the density functional fail to reproduce the insulating antiferromagnetic ground state in the parent compounds of the high-temperature oxide superconductors. Similar problems have been observed earlier in classical transition-metal oxides such as FeO, CoO, and NiO. In this work we present the method which delivers the correct insulating antiferromagnetic ground state in the correlated oxides preserving other properties as well as the efficiency of the standard LDA. The method embeds the relevant (for a given system of electrons) part of the Hubbard Hamiltonian into the Kohn-Sham LDA equation. The resulting Hamiltonian attempts to fix two intrinsic problems of the LDA: the deficiency in forming localized (atomiclike) moments and the lack of discontinuity of the effective one-particle potential when going from occupied to unoccupied states. We present the detailed study of La2CuO4 and LaCuO3. In the case of La2CuO4 the energy gap and the value of the localized magnetic moment in the stable insulating antiferromagnetic solution are in good agreement with experiment. We compare our results with the standard local spin density approximation calculation and multiband Hubbard model calculations, as well as with results of spectroscopy: inverse photoemission, valence photoemission, and x-ray absorption at the K edge of oxygen. In the case of LaCuO3 such an extensive comparison is limited due to the limited data available for this compound. We discuss, however, the electric and magnetic properties and the insulator-metal-insulator transitions upon increase of oxygen deficiency.

Abstract

In this paper we will present measurements, using various kinds of spectroscopy, on the hole-doped compound Bi2Sr2Ca1-xY(x)Cu(2)O(8+delta), with x ranging from 0.0 to 1.0. Cu 2p x-ray photoelectron spectra are compared with cluster calculations using nonlocal screening effects. The consequences of hole doping and multiplet interaction are also studied. The photoemission and inverse-photoemission data indicate that the appearance of intensity at the Fermi level is a result of the shift of the chemical potential to the top of the valence band combined with a shift of spectral weight from high- to low-energy states.

Abstract

A detailed study of the doping dependence of valence- and core-level spectra of Bi2Sr2Ca1-xYxCu2O8+delta leads to the conclusion that the chemical potential shifts in a manner consistent with that of a simple doped semiconductor. The spectroscopically observed filling in of the gap upon doping of the correlated insulator is therefore not due to midgap states pinning the Fermi level, but most likely due to spectral weight resulting from the incoherent part of the one-electron Green's function.

Abstract

O 1s x-ray absorption study of the Mott insulator Ca2RuO4 shows that the orbital population of the 4d t(2g) band dramatically changes with temperature. In addition, spin-resolved circularly polarized photoemission study of Ca2RuO4 shows that a substantial orbital angular momentum is induced in the Ru 4d t(2g) band. Based on the experimental results and model Hartree-Fock calculations, we argue that the cooperation between the strong spin-orbit coupling in the Ru 4d t(2g) band and the small distortion of the RuO6 octahedra causes the interesting changeover of the spin and orbital anisotropy as a function of temperature., QC 20100525

Abstract

The controlled-valence properties of La1−xSrxFeO3 and La1−xSrxMnO3 are studied by means of soft-x-ray absorption spectroscopy. A comparison between the transition-metal 2p spectra and atomic-multiplet calculations is used to determine the 3d count. The O 1s spectrum is used to characterize changes in unoccupied states that contain oxygen p character. The results indicate that the holes induced by substitution for both series are located in states of mixed metal 3d–oxygen 2p character. The ground state of LaFeO3 is mainly 3d5 and becomes 3d5L (where L denotes a ligand hole) in the La1−xSrxFeO3 series for low Sr concentration. The main component of the ground state of LaMnO3 is 3d4 and becomes a mixture of 3d3 and 3d4L in the La1−xSrxMnO3 series. The trends in controlled- valence properties of similar oxides across the transition-metal series can be rationalized within the framework of the Zaanen-Sawatzky-Allen model., This work was partially supported by Fundamenteel Onderzoek der Materie (FOM) and Scheikundig Onderzoek Nederland (SON).
