203. Surgical anatomy of the sural nerve for peripheral nerve reconstruction research in swine

Abstract

The use of peripheral nerves as donor nerves for peripheral nerve regeneration studies, which can provide a long peripheral nerve with intact physiological functions, for autologous nerve grafts was unknown in swine. This study investigated the surgical anatomy of sural nerves (nervus suralis) of cadavers and anesthetized miniature pigs. A loose-S shape incision line was made from the border of the biceps femoris muscle (musculus biceps femoris) to 2 cm above the calx in the leg of anesthetized miniature pigs. The sural nerve was found to branch from the sciatic nerve (nervus ischiadicus) under the biceps femoris muscle and run along the small saphenous vein (vena saphena parva). After being isolated and stimulated using a nerve stimulator, the sural nerve innervated no muscles and tissues in the leg. Abstract

Domain-Specific Languages (DSLs) receive attention as the possible next abstraction step in programming. Despite the benefits of using DSLs, in the industry there is also some reluctance against their introduction in product development. We address a number of issues that are important to gain industrial confidence for the introduction of DSLs. These include the available tools, the quality of generated code, and the incorporation in the industrial workflow. Our observations are based on an industrial study project at Philips Healthcare, especially concerning the development of a DSL for collision prevention. We also relate our experiences to the literature.

We present a new family of shape invariant potentials which could be called a 'continuous l version' of the potentials corresponding to the exceptional (X(l)) J1 Jacobi polynomials constructed recently by the present authors. In a certain limit, it reduces to a continuous l family of shape invariant potentials related to the exceptional (X(l)) L1 Laguerre polynomials. 232. Exceptional Askey-Wilson-type polynomials through Darboux-Crum transformations

Abstract

An alternative derivation is presented of the infinitely many exceptional Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials, which were introduced by the present authors in 2009. Darboux-Crum transformations intertwining the discrete quantum mechanical systems of the original and the exceptional polynomials play an important role. Infinitely many continuous Hahn polynomials are derived in the same manner. Abstract

In the Littlest Higgs model with T-parity, we study production processes of new gauge bosons at the international linear collider (ILC). Through Monte Carlo simulations of the production processes, we show that the heavy gauge boson masses can be determined very accurately at the ILC for a representative parameter point of the model. Abstract

We investigate a possibility of precision measurements for parameters of the Littlest Higgs model with T-parity at the International Linear Collider (ILC). The model predicts new gauge bosons which masses strongly depend on the vacuum expectation value that breaks a global symmetry of the model. Through Monte Carlo simulations of production processes of new gauge bosons, we show that these masses can be determined very accurately at the ILC for a representative parameter point of the model. Abstract

A nationwide survey of congenital hydrocephalus, including secondary hydrocephalus occurring within one year after birth, was carried out in 1988 using two questionnaires. The first questionnaire, which attempted to determine the number of patients treated for hydrocephalus during the year of 1987, revealed that 2,222 patients were under medical care in 68.6 percent of responding hospitals. The second questionnaire was concerned with the clinico-epidemiological features of the disease in those patients. The total number of patients for which questionnaires were returned was 1,435. The number of patients treated in hospitals with 200 or more beds during the one year period was estimated to be 3,000 (2,000 for primary and 1,000 for secondary). The number of new cases of this disease which occurred during the year was calculated to be 800. This indicates a rate of 0.58 per 1,000 live births.

Abstract

The exposure of K-562 cells to ethidium bromide or acridine orange as DNA-intercalating agents induced their differentiation to hemoglobin-producing cells. The addition of L-ethionine or dimethylsulfoxide induced neither such differentiation nor changes in poly(A) polymerase activity of K-562 cells, though the addition of ethidium bromide, acridine orange, hydroxyurea, or 1-β-arabinofuranosylcytosine induced erythroid differentiation and decreases in poly(A) polymerase activity. These results suggest that DNA-intercalation is one of the pathways triggering differentiation of K-562 cells and the decrease in poly(A) polymerase activity may be an important change associated with differentiation of K-562 cells.
