Abstract

Physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM) can be described in a consistent and general way through the Higgs Effective Field Theory (HEFT). Measurements of model-independent HEFT coefficients allow one to constrain the parameter space of BSM models via a matching procedure. In this work, we show that this procedure is not unique and depends on the scalings of the parameters of the Lagrangian. As examples, we consider three BSM models: the real singlet extension of the SM with a $Z_2$ symmetry, the complex singlet extension (CSE) of the SM and the 2 Higgs Doublet Model. We discuss several physical observables, and show that different scalings of the model parameters with the UV scale in the matching to the HEFT can yield quite different results. This complicates the interpretation of HEFT measurements in terms of parameters of BSM models. 202. Heisenberg-Limited Quantum Lidar for Joint Range and Velocity Estimation

Abstract

We propose a quantum lidar protocol to jointly estimate the range and velocity of a target by illuminating it with a single beam of pulsed displaced squeezed light. In the lossless scenario, we show that the mean-squared errors of both range and velocity estimations are inversely proportional to the squared number of signal photons, simultaneously attaining the Heisenberg limit. This is achieved by engineering the multi-photon squeezed state of the temporal modes and adopting standard homodyne detection. To assess the robustness of the quantum protocol, we incorporate photon losses and detuning of the homodyne receiver. Our findings reveal a quantum advantage over the best-known classical strategy across a wide range of round-trip transmissivities. Particularly, the quantum advantage is substantial for sufficiently small losses, even when compared to the optimal -- potentially unattainable -- classical performance limit. The quantum advantage also extends to the practical case where quantum engineering is done on top of the strong classical coherent state with watts of power. This, together with the robustness against losses and the feasibility of the measurement with state-of-the-art technology, make the protocol highly promising for near-term implementation.

Abstract

Classical information loading is an essential task for many processing quantum algorithms, constituting a cornerstone in the field of quantum machine learning. In particular, the embedding techniques based on Hamiltonian simulation techniques enable the loading of matrices into quantum computers. A representative example of these methods is the Lloyd-Mohseni-Rebentrost protocol, which efficiently implements matrix exponentiation when multiple copies of a quantum state are available. However, this is a quite ideal set up, and in a realistic scenario, the copies are limited and the non-cloning theorem prevents from producing more exact copies in order to increase the accuracy of the protocol. Here, we propose a method to circumvent this limitation by introducing imperfect quantum copies that significantly enhance the performance of previous proposals.

Abstract

Halite (NaCl mineral) has exhibited the potential to preserve microorganisms for millions of years on Earth. This mineral was also identified on Mars and in meteorites. In this study, we investigated the potential of halite crystals to protect microbial life forms on the surface of an airless body (e.g., meteorite), for instance, during a lithopanspermia process (interplanetary travel step) in the early Solar System. To investigate the effect of the radiation of the young Sun on microorganisms, we performed extensive simulation experiments by employing a synchrotron facility. We focused on two exposure conditions: vacuum (low Earth orbit, 10^{-4}Pa) and vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) radiation (range 57.6 - 124 nm, flux 7.14 W m^{-2}), with the latter representing an extreme scenario with high VUV fluxes comparable to the amount of radiation of a stellar superflare from the young Sun. The stellar VUV parameters were estimated by using the very well-studied solar analog of the young Sun, k^{1}Cet. To evaluate the protective effects of halite, we entrapped a halophilic archaeon (Haloferax volcanii) and a non-halophilic bacterium (Deinococcus radiodurans) in laboratory-grown halite. Control groups were cells entrapped in salt crystals (mixtures of different salts and NaCl) and non-trapped (naked) cells, respectively. All groups were exposed either to vacuum alone or to vacuum plus VUV. Our results demonstrate that halite can serve as protection against vacuum and VUV radiation, regardless of the type of microorganism. In addition, we found that the protection is higher than provided by crystals obtained from mixtures of salts. This extends the protective effects of halite documented in previous studies and reinforces the possibility to consider the crystals of this mineral as potential preservation structures in airless bodies or as vehicles for the interplanetary transfer of microorganisms.

Abstract

The one-loop quantum corrections to the internal energy of some lattices due to the quantum fluctuations of the scalar field of phonons are studied. The band spectrum of the lattice is characterised in terms of the scattering data, allowing to compute the quantum vacuum interaction energy between nodes at zero temperature, as well as the total Helmholtz free energy, the entropy, and the Casimir pressure between nodes at finite non-zero temperature. Some examples of periodic potentials built from the repetition in one of the three spatial dimensions of the same punctual or compact supported potential are addressed: a stack of parallel plates constructed by positioning $\delta\delta'$-functions at the lattice nodes, and an 'upside-down tiled roof' of parallel two-dimensional P\"oschl-Teller wells centred at the nodes. They will be called generalised Dirac comb and P\"oschl-Teller comb, respectively. Positive one-loop quantum corrections to the entropy appear for both combs at non-zero temperatures. Moreover, the Casimir force between the lattice nodes is always repulsive for both chains when non-trivial temperatures are considered, implying that the primitive cell increases its size due to the quantum interaction of the phonon field., Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures. Abstract

We prove that a formal curve $\Gamma$ that is invariant by a $C^\infty$ vector field $\xi$ of $\mathbb{R}^m$ has a geometrical realization, as soon as the Taylor expansion of $\xi$ is not identically zero along $\Gamma$. This means that there is a trajectory $\gamma$ of $\xi$ which is asymptotic to $\Gamma$. This result solves a natural question proposed by Bonckaert nearly forty years ago. We also construct an invariant $C^0$ manifold $S$ in some open horn around $\Gamma$ which is composed entirely of trajectories asymptotic to $\Gamma$, and contains the germ of any such trajectory. If $\xi$ is analytic, we prove that there exists a trajectory asymptotic to $\Gamma$ which is, moreover, non-oscillating with respect to subanalytic sets.

Abstract

In this article we study the phenomenological implications of multiple Higgs boson production from longitudinal vector boson scattering in the context of effective field theories. We find compact representations for effective tree-level amplitudes with up to four final state Higgs bosons. Total cross sections are then computed for scenarios relevant at the LHC in which we find the general Higgs Effective Theory (HEFT) prediction avoids the heavy suppression observed in Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT)., Comment: 44 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

Accurate and scalable methods for computational quantum chemistry can accelerate research and development in many fields, ranging from drug discovery to advanced material design. Solving the electronic Schrodinger equation is the core problem of computational chemistry. However, the combinatorial complexity of this problem makes it intractable to find exact solutions, except for very small systems. The idea of quantum computing originated from this computational challenge in simulating quantum-mechanics. We propose an end-to-end quantum chemistry pipeline based on the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) algorithm and integrated with both HPC-based simulators and a trapped-ion quantum computer. Our platform orchestrates hundreds of simulation jobs on compute resources to efficiently complete a set of ab initio chemistry experiments with a wide range of parameterization. Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large family of human-made chemicals that pose a major environmental and health issue globally. Our simulations includes breaking a Carbon-Fluorine bond in trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), a common PFAS chemical. This is a common pathway towards destruction and removal of PFAS. Molecules are modeled on both a quantum simulator and a trapped-ion quantum computer, specifically IonQ Aria. Using basic error mitigation techniques, the 11-qubit TFA model (56 entangling gates) on IonQ Aria yields near-quantitative results with milli-Hartree accuracy. Our novel results show the current state and future projections for quantum computing in solving the electronic structure problem, push the boundaries for the VQE algorithm and quantum computers, and facilitates development of quantum chemistry workflows.

Abstract

Introduction: Asthma is a common chronic disease in the paediatric age group that requires close follow-up. Clinical practice guidelines offer evidence-based recommendations to achieve adequate control of the disease. Objective: To assess the management of childhood asthma in the primary care setting in the Community of Madrid, and the adherence of health care professionals to guideline recommendations. To analyse the association of asthma management with age, the socioeconomic level of the catchment population and the workload of primary care centres. Methods: retrospective longitudinal study in patients aged 6–14 years newly diagnosed with asthma in primary care centres of the Community of Madrid in 2021. We analysed sociodemographic and clinical variables and the compliance with recommendations at the time of diagnosis and over 1 year of follow-up. The source of data was the electronic health record database of the primary care system. Results: We found a proportion of compliance with the recommendations upon diagnosis of the disease of 5.84%, with differences associated to the socioeconomic level of the catchment population (P = .033), and the pressure of care (P = .006). The proportion of compliance with recommendations during follow-up was 12.73%, with differences based on age (P = .01), socioeconomic level (P = 0.006) and centre workloads (P = .002). Conclusions: Compliance with the recommendations of the main childhood asthma management guidelines in the primary care setting was low in the Community of Madrid. Strategies need to be implemented to improve the management of this disease and the adherence of professionals to the protocols developed for this purpose. Resumen: Introducción: El asma es una enfermedad crónica frecuente en la edad pediátrica y precisa un seguimiento estrecho. Para lograr un buen control de la enfermedad las Guías de Práctica Clínica ofrecen recomendaciones basadas en la evidencia científica. Objetivo: Valorar el manejo del asma que se realiza en Atención Primaria de la Comunidad de Madrid, y la adecuación a las recomendaciones de las guías por parte de los profesionales sanitarios. Analizar la relación del manejo con la edad, el nivel socioeconómico de la población y la presión asistencial de los centros de salud. Métodos: Estudio longitudinal retrospectivo en pacientes de 6 a 14 años con un nuevo diagnóstico de asma durante el año 2021 en los centros de salud de la Comunidad de Madrid. Se analizaron variables sociodemográficas, clínicas y el cumplimiento de las recomendaciones al diagnóstico y durante un año de seguimiento. La fuente de información fue la Historia Clínica Electrónica para Atención Primaria. Resultados: El cumplimiento de las recomendaciones al diagnóstico de la enfermedad fue del 5,84%, con diferencias según el nivel socioeconómico (p = 0,033) y la presión asistencial (p = 0,006). El cumplimiento de las recomendaciones durante el seguimiento fue del 12,73%, con diferencias según la edad (p = 0,01), nivel socioeconómico (p = 0,006) y la presión asistencial (p = 0,002). Conclusiones: El cumplimiento registrado de las recomendaciones sobre el manejo del asma en Atención Primaria de la Comunidad de Madrid es bajo. Es necesario fomentar estrategias para mejorar el manejo de esta enfermedad y, la adhesión de los profesionales a los programas diseñados para ello.

216. Fraction Addition through the Music

Abstract

This study examined the effects of an academic intervention, associated with music, on the conceptual understanding of musical notation and arithmetic of fractions of first-year students of high school from a mixed Spanish multicultural and socioeconomic public school. The students (N = 12) had previous concepts about musical instruction, as well as operations with fractions, particularly addition. This is an observational study in which a battery of four tasks was administered before and after an instruction based on a musical environment, music being a semiotic function. The instruction included 9 sessions of 50 minutes each. The results prior to the intervention show deficiencies in a concept that was not new to the students, however, after the intervention the students were competent in addition with fractions. 217. Indicators of Knowledge, Usefulness, and Use of ICT among Primary School Teachers

Abstract

This paper presents a study on the perceptions of primary school teachers regarding their knowledge, usefulness, and use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in education. Likewise, the relationship between sex, age, working time and the educational center in which it is found with the perceptions about ICT is obtained. To answer these questions, a battery of 14 categorical closed questions is designed, divided into four blocks: socio-demographic information; knowledge of ICT; usefulness of ICT; and use of ICT. In the context of measuring the knowledge, usefulness and use of ICT in education, the novelty of this work relies on the design of an indicator for each of the ICT-related blocks following the methodology of Human Development Indicators created by the United Nations Development Program. In this research, 119 teachers from Spanish primary schools were chosen as the study sample to answer the questions' battery. The results show a direct relationship between knowledge, usefulness, and use, although not significant. Although teachers are aware of the usefulness of ICT, and the COVID-19 pandemic has increased the use of technological tools for planning teaching in blended or distance learning lessons, this does not mean teachers have a greater knowledge of ICT. In addition, the findings indicate a greater knowledge by teachers in public schools, which contrasts with the finding that teachers in grant-assisted schools make the most use of ICT and find it the most useful. Finally, it is also suggested that the study's methodology and approach could be applied to other contexts or countries.

218. Telecollaboration and Languages for Specific Purposes

Abstract

There is no doubt that telecollaboration currently plays an important role in foreign language learning and, not less so, in the field of English for Specific Purposes (ESP). Guth (2020) highlighted how telecollaboration has rapidly evolved in the past years as an innovative approach, and how it has brought together a whole community of academics and researchers interested in the field. In this paper, a brief overview of the various presentations that took place in the EuroCALL Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) Special Interest Group (SIG) Symposium is offered. The paper introduces four projects based on telecollaboration contextualised within an ESP classroom in higher education. The first one focuses on a collaborative debate project using English as a lingua franca; the second elaborates on improving learners' pragmatic skills through telecollaborative roleplays; the third describes an immersive Virtual Exchange (VE) aiming to foster the students' civic and entrepreneurial competence, while enhancing their intercultural communicative competence. The fourth project aimed at improving students' business communication and management skills in English in a multicultural environment.
