Search

It is difficult to establish the properties of massive stars that explode as supernovae. The electromagnetic emission during the first minutes to hours after the emergence of the shock from the stellar surface conveys important information about the final evolution and structure of the exploding star. However, the unpredictable nature of supernova events hinders the detection of this brief initial phase. Here we report the serendipitous discovery of a newly born, normal type IIb supernova (SN 2016gkg), which reveals a rapid brightening at optical wavelengths of about 40 magnitudes per day. The very frequent sampling of the observations allowed us to study in detail the outermost structure of the progenitor of the supernova and the physics of the emergence of the shock. We develop hydrodynamical models of the explosion that naturally account for the complete evolution of the supernova over distinct phases regulated by different physical processes. The intranuclear cascade model INCL (Li\`ege Intranuclear Cascade) is now able to simulate spallation reactions induced by projectiles with energies up to roughly 15 GeV. This was made possible thanks to the implementation of multipion emission in the NN, $\Delta$N and $\pi$N interactions. The results obtained with reactions on nuclei induced by nucleons or pions gave confidence in the model. A next step will be the addition of the strange particles, $\Lambda$, $\Sigma$ and Kaons, in order to not only refine the high-energy modeling, but also to extend the capabilities of INCL, as studying hypernucleus physics. Between those two versions of the code, the possibility to treat the $\eta$ and $\omega$ mesons in INCL has been performed and this is the topic of this paper. Production yields of these mesons increase with energy and it is interesting to test their roles at higher energies. More specifically, studies of $\eta$ rare decays benefit from accurate simulations of its production. These are the two reasons for their implementation. We analyse new signals of Dark Matter (DM) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in a 3-Higgs Doublet Model (3HDM) where only one doublet acquires a Vacuum Expectation Value (VEV), preserving a parity $Z_2$. The other two doublets are \textit{inert} and do not develop a VEV, leading to a {\it dark scalar sector} controlled by $Z_2$, with the lightest CP-even dark scalar $H_1$ being the DM candidate. This leads to the loop induced decay of the next-to-lightest scalar, $H_2 \to H_1 f \bar f$ ($f=u,d,c,s,b,e,\mu,\tau$), mediated by both dark CP-odd and charged scalars. This is a smoking-gun signal of the 3HDM since it is not allowed in the 2HDM with one inert doublet and is expected to be important when $H_2$ and $H_1$ are close in mass. In practice, this signature can be observed in the cascade decay of the SM-like Higgs boson, $h\to H_1 H_2\to H_1 H_1 f \bar f$ into two DM particles and di-leptons/di-jets, where $h$ is produced from either gluon-gluon Fusion (ggF) or Vector Boson Fusion (VBF). However, this signal competes with the tree-level channel $q\bar q\to H_1H_1Z^*\to H_1H_1f \bar f$. We devise some benchmarks, compliant with collider, DM and cosmological data, for which the interplay between these modes is discussed. In particular, we show that the resulting detector signature, $\Et\; f \bar f$, with invariant mass of $ f \bar f$ much smaller than $m_Z$, can potentially be extracted already during Run 2 and 3. For example, the $H_2\to H_1\gamma^*$ and $\gamma^*\to e^+e^-$ case will give a spectacular QED mono-shower signal., Comment: The version appearing in JHEP

Atomic force microscopy is based on tip sample interaction, which is determined by the properties of tip and sample. Unfortunately, in particular in ambient conditions the tip as well as the sample are contaminated, and it is not clear how this contamination may affect data in Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) applications. In the present work we propose to use on the one hand AFM imaging of the cantilever chips and on the other hand multidimensional AFM spectroscopy techniques to characterize the state of contamination of the tip sample system. We find that typically AFM cantilevers may be severely contaminated when taken from typical packaging boxes that have been opened for a long time. In addition, by acquisition spectroscopy data as a function of tip-sample voltage and tip-sample distance, we are able to determine the Hamaker constant of the system, which depends strongly on the contamination within the tip-sample system. This method allows for in-situ characterization of the tip-sample system using only AFM techniques., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures

CASTAway is a mission concept to explore our Solar System's main asteroid belt. Asteroids and comets provide a window into the formation and evolution of our Solar System and the composition of these objects can be inferred from space-based remote sensing using spectroscopic techniques. Variations in composition across the asteroid populations provide a tracer for the dynamical evolution of the Solar System. The mission combines a long-range (point source) telescopic survey of over 10,000 objects, targeted close encounters with 10 to 20 asteroids and serendipitous searches to constrain the distribution of smaller (e.g. 10 m) size objects into a single concept. With a carefully targeted trajectory that loops through the asteroid belt, CASTAway would provide a comprehensive survey of the main belt at multiple scales. The scientific payload comprises a 50 cm diameter telescope that includes an integrated low-resolution (R = 30 to 100) spectrometer and visible context imager, a thermal (e.g. 6 to 16 microns) imager for use during the flybys, and modified star tracker cameras to detect small (approx. 10 m) asteroids. The CASTAway spacecraft and payload have high levels of technology readiness and are designed to fit within the programmatic and cost caps for a European Space Agency medium class mission, whilst delivering a significant increase in knowledge of our Solar System., Comment: 40 pages, accepted by Advances in Space Research October 2017

We describe Castalia, a proposed mission to rendezvous with a Main Belt Comet (MBC), 133P/Elst-Pizarro. MBCs are a recently discovered population of apparently icy bodies within the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, which may represent the remnants of the population which supplied the early Earth with water. Castalia will perform the first exploration of this population by characterising 133P in detail, solving the puzzle of the MBC's activity, and making the first in situ measurements of water in the asteroid belt. In many ways a successor to ESA's highly successful Rosetta mission, Castalia will allow direct comparison between very different classes of comet, including measuring critical isotope ratios, plasma and dust properties. It will also feature the first radar system to visit a minor body, mapping the ice in the interior. Castalia was proposed, in slightly different versions, to the ESA M4 and M5 calls within the Cosmic Vision programme. We present measurements of the Spin Hall Effect (SHE) in AuW and AuTa alloys for a large range of W or Ta concentrations by combining experiments on lateral spin valves and Ferromagnetic-Resonance/spin pumping technique. The main result is the identification of a large enhancement of the Spin Hall Angle (SHA) by the side-jump mechanism on Ta impurities, with a SHA as high as + 0.5 (i.e $50\%$) for about 10\% of Ta. In contrast the SHA in AuW does not exceed + 0.15 and can be explained by intrinsic SHE of the alloy without significant extrinsic contribution from skew or side-jump scattering by W impurities. The AuTa alloys, as they combine a very large SHA with a moderate resistivity (smaller than $85\,\mu\Omega.cm$), are promising for spintronic devices exploiting the SHE., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

In the framework of multi-body dynamics, successive encounters with a third body, even if well outside of its sphere of influence, can noticeably alter the trajectory of a spacecraft. Examples of these effects have already been exploited by past missions such as SMART-1, as well as are proposed to benefit future missions to Jupiter, Saturn or Neptune, and disposal strategies from Earth's High Eccentric or Libration Point Orbits. This paper revises three totally different descriptions of the effects of the third body gravitational perturbation. These are the averaged dynamics of the classical third body perturbing function, the Opik's close encounter theory and the Keplerian map approach. The first two techniques have respectively been applied to the cases of a spacecraft either always remaining very far or occasionally experiencing extremely close approaches to the third body. However, the paper also seeks solutions for trajectories that undergo one or more close approaches at distances in the order of the sphere of influence of the third body. Excitation-energy spectra of $^{11}$C nuclei near the $\eta^\prime$-meson production threshold have been measured by missing-mass spectroscopy using the $^{12}$C($p$,$d$) reaction. A carbon target has been irradiated with a 2.5 GeV proton beam supplied by the synchrotron SIS-18 at GSI to produce $\eta^\prime$ meson bound states in $^{11}$C nuclei. Deuterons emitted at $0^\circ$ in the reaction have been momentum-analyzed by the fragment separator (FRS) used as a high-resolution spectrometer. No distinct structure due to the formation of $\eta^\prime$-mesic states is observed although a high statistical sensitivity is achieved in the experimental spectra. Upper limits on the formation cross sections of $\eta^\prime$-mesic states are determined, and thereby a constraint imposed on the $\eta^\prime$-nucleus interaction is discussed., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review C

We study the production and decay of a light charged Higgs boson at the future Large Hadron electron Collider (LHeC) in the framework of the Two Higgs Doublet Type III, assuming a four-zero texture in the Yukawa matrices and a general Higgs potential. We analyze the charge current production processes $e^- p \to \nu_e q H^+ $ considering the signature $H^+ \to c \bar{b} + c.c.$ of the final state. We take this signature and we compare it to the irreducible background from Standard Model (SM) interactions. Excitation spectra of $^{11}$C were measured in the $^{12}$C$(p,d)$ reaction near the $\eta'$ emission threshold. A proton beam extracted from the synchrotron SIS-18 at GSI with an incident energy of 2.5 GeV impinged on a carbon target. The momenta of deuterons emitted at 0 degrees were precisely measured with the fragment separator FRS operated as a spectrometer. In contrast to theoretical predictions on the possible existence of deeply bound $\eta'$ mesic states in carbon nuclei, no distinct structures were observed associated with the formation of bound states. Let $A$ and $B$ be C$^*$-algebras. A linear map $T:A\to B$ is said to be a $^*$-homomorphism at an element $z\in A$ if $a b^*=z$ in $A$ implies $T (a b^*) =T (a) T (b)^* =T(z)$, and $ c^* d=z$ in $A$ gives $T (c^* d) =T (c)^* T (d) =T(z).$ Assuming that $A$ is unital, we prove that every linear map $T: A\to B$ which is a $^*$-homomorphism at the unit of $A$ is a Jordan $^*$-homomorphism. If $A$ is simple and infinite, then we establish that a linear map $T: A\to B$ is a $^*$-homomorphism if and only if $T$ is a $^*$-homomorphism at the unit of $A$. For a general unital C$^*$-algebra $A$ and a linear map $T:A\to B$, we prove that $T$ is a $^*$-homomorphism if, and only if, $T$ is a $^*$-homomorphism at $0$ and at $1$. Actually if $p$ is a non-zero projection in $A$, and $T$ is a $^*$-homomorphism at $p$ and at $1-p$, then we prove that $T$ is a Jordan $^*$-homomorphism. We also study bounded linear maps that are $^*$-homomorphisms at a unitary element in $A$.

The spin-orbit interaction couples the electrons' motion to their spin. Accordingly, passing a current in a material with strong spin-orbit coupling generates a transverse spin current (spin Hall effect, SHE) and vice-versa (inverse spin Hall effect, ISHE). The emergence of SHE and ISHE as charge-to-spin interconversion mechanisms offers a variety of novel spintronics functionalities and devices, some of which do not require any ferromagnetic material. However, the interconversion efficiency of SHE and ISHE (spin Hall angle) is a bulk property that rarely exceeds ten percent, and does not take advantage of interfacial and low-dimensional effects otherwise ubiquitous in spintronics hetero- and mesostructures. Here, we make use of an interface-driven spin-orbit coupling mechanism - the Rashba effect - in the oxide two-dimensional electron system (2DES) LaAlO3/SrTiO3 to achieve spin-to-charge conversion with unprecedented efficiency. Through spin-pumping, we inject a spin current from a NiFe film into the oxide 2DES and detect the resulting charge current, which can be strongly modulated by a gate voltage. We study an extension of the Standard Model (SM) in which two copies of the SM scalar $SU(2)$ doublet which do not acquire a Vacuum Expectation Value (VEV), and hence are \textit{inert}, are added to the scalar sector. We allow for CP-violation in the \textit{inert} sector, where the lightest \textit{inert} state is protected from decaying to SM particles through the conservation of a $Z_2$ symmetry. The lightest neutral particle from the \textit{inert} sector, which has a mixed CP-charge due to CP-violation, is hence a Dark Matter (DM) candidate. We discuss the new regions of DM relic density opened up by CP-violation, and compare our results to the CP-conserving limit and the Inert Doublet Model (IDM). We constrain the parameter space of the CP-violating model using recent results from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and DM direct and indirect detection experiments., Comment: 42 pages, 22 figures

The goal of this report is to summarize the current situation and discuss possible search strategies for charged scalars, in non-supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model at the LHC. Such scalars appear in Multi-Higgs-Doublet models (MHDM), in particular in the popular Two-Higgs-Doublet model (2HDM), allowing for charged and additional neutral Higgs bosons. These models have the attractive property that electroweak precision observables are automatically in agreement with the Standard Model at the tree level. For the most popular version of this framework, Model~II, a discovery of a charged Higgs boson remains challenging, since the parameter space is becoming very constrained, and the QCD background is very high. We also briefly comment on models with dark matter which constrain the corresponding charged scalars that occur in these models. The stakes of a possible discovery of an extended scalar sector are very high, and these searches should be pursued in all conceivable channels, at the LHC and at future colliders., Comment: 65 pages, revised version to appear in EPJ C

A formal description of a quantum abacus based encoding system is presented. This way of representing data for processing purposes is based on a quantum algorithm for counting qubits introduced by Lesovik et al. \cite{LesovikEtal2010} and Suslov et al. \cite{SuslovEtal2011}, but formally developed in this work. Finally, in order to illustrate the potential of this proposal, the implementation of the basic quantum array operations through this encoding system is presented.

Phylogenetic varieties related to equivariant substitution models have been studied largely in the last years. One of the main objectives has been finding a set of generators of the ideal of these varieties, but this has not yet been achieved in some cases (for example, for the general Markov model this involves the open "salmon conjecture") and it is not clear how to use all generators in practice. Motivated by applications in biology, we tackle the problem from another point of view. The elements of the ideal that could be useful for applications in phylogenetics only need to describe the variety around certain "points of no evolution". We produce a collection of explicit equations that describe the variety on a Zariski open neighborhood of these points. Namely, for any tree on any number of leaves (and any degrees at the interior nodes) and for any equivariant model on any set of states, we compute the codimension of the corresponding phylogenetic variety. We prove that this variety is smooth at general points of no evolution, and provide an algorithm to produce a complete intersection that describes the variety around these points., Comment: 33 pages, 3 figures

We experimentally investigate the current-induced magnetization reversal in Pt/[Co/Ni]$_3$/Al multilayers combining the anomalous Hall effect and magneto-optical Kerr effect techniques in crossbar geometry. The magnetization reversal occurs through nucleation and propagation of a domain of opposite polarity for a current density of the order of 0.3 TA/m$^2$. In these experiments we demonstrate a full control of each stage: i)the {\O}rsted field controls the domain nucleation and ii) domain-wall propagation occurs by spin torque from the Pt spin Hall effect. This scenario requires an in-plane magnetic field to tune the domain wall center orientation along the current for efficient domain wall propagation. Generalized linear models (GLMs) using a regression procedure to fit relationships between predictor and target variables are widely used in automobile insurance data. Here, in the process of ratemaking and in order to compute the premiums to be charged to the policy--holders it is crucial to detect the relevant variables which affect to the value of the premium since in this case the insurer could eventually fix more precisely the premiums. We propose here a methodology with a different perspective. Instead of the exponential family we pay attention to the Power Series Distributions and develop a Bayesian methodology using sampling--based methods in order to detect relevant variables in automobile insurance data set. This model, as the GLMs, allows to incorporate the presence of an excessive number of zero counts and overdispersion phenomena (variance larger than the mean). Following this spirit, in this paper we present a novel and flexible zero--inflated Bayesian regression model. This model includes other familiar models such as the zero--inflated Poisson and zero--inflated geometric models, as special cases. A Bayesian estimation method is developed as an alternative to traditionally used maximum likelihood based methods to analyze such data. For a real data collected from 2004 to 2005 in an Australian insurance company an example is provided by using Markov Chain Monte Carlo method which is developed in WinBUGS package. The Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) feature in the power spectrum of galaxies provides a standard ruler to measure the accelerated expansion of the Universe. To extract all available information about dark energy, it is necessary to measure a standard ruler in the local, z<0.2, universe where dark energy dominates most the energy density of the Universe. Though the volume available in the local universe is limited, it is just big enough to measure accurately the long 100 Mpc/h wave-mode of the BAO. Using cosmological N-body simulations and approximate methods based on Lagrangian perturbation theory, we construct a suite of a thousand light-cones to evaluate the precision at which one can measure the BAO standard ruler in the local universe. We find that using the most massive galaxies on the full sky (34,000 sq. deg.), i.e. a K(2MASS)<14 magnitude-limited sample, one can measure the BAO scale up to a precision of 4\% and 1.2\% using reconstruction). We also find that such a survey would help to detect the dynamics of dark energy.Therefore, we propose a 3-year long observational project, named the Low Redshift survey at Calar Alto (LoRCA), to observe spectroscopically about 200,000 galaxies in the northern sky to contribute to the construction of aforementioned galaxy sample. We analyze the prospect for observing the lightest and heaviest CP-even neutral Higgs bosons ($\phi=h,\;H$) in their decays to flavor violating $b\bar{s}$ (with charge conjugate) final states at the future Large Hadron electron Collider (LHeC), in the framework of the Two Higgs Doublet Model type III (2HDM-III) assuming a four-zero texture in the Yukawa matrices and a general Higgs potential. We consider the charge current production processes $e^- p \to \nu_e \phi q_f$ ($\phi= h, \; H$), with the flavor violating decays of the Higgs bosons. We consider scenarios of the model which are consistent with current experimental data from flavor and Higgs physics. We also consider the most relevant Standard Model (SM) backgrounds. We find that the lightest (SM-like) CP-even Higgs boson $h$ and the heaviest one $ H$ (with mass up to 150 GeV) would have 1--2 $\Sigma$ and 1 $\Sigma$ significances, respectively, with 100 fb$^{-1}$ of data. We present experimental results on the conversion of a spin current into a charge current by spin pumping into the Dirac cone with helical spin polarization of the elemental topological insulator (TI) {\alpha}-Sn[1-3]. By angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) we first confirm that the Dirac cone at the surface of {\alpha}-Sn (0 0 1) layers subsists after covering with Ag. Then we show that resonant spin pumping at room temperature from Fe through Ag into {\alpha}-Sn layers induces a lateral charge current that can be ascribed to the Inverse Edelstein Effect[4-5]. Our observation of an Inverse Edelstein Effect length[5-6] much longer than for Rashba interfaces[5-10] demonstrates the potential of the TI for conversion between spin and charge in spintronic devices. By comparing our results with data on the relaxation time of TI free surface states from time-resolved ARPES, we can anticipate the ultimate potential of TI for spin to charge conversion and the conditions to reach it., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

We study the clustering of galaxies detected at $i<22.5$ in the Science Verification observations of the Dark Energy Survey (DES). Two-point correlation functions are measured using $2.3\times 10^6$ galaxies over a contiguous 116 deg$^2$ region in five bins of photometric redshift width $\Delta z = 0.2$ in the range $0.2 < z < 1.2.$ The impact of photometric redshift errors are assessed by comparing results using a template-based photo-$z$ algorithm (BPZ) to a machine-learning algorithm (TPZ). A companion paper (Leistedt et al 2015) presents maps of several observational variables (e.g. seeing, sky brightness) which could modulate the galaxy density. Here we characterize and mitigate systematic errors on the measured clustering which arise from these observational variables, in addition to others such as Galactic dust and stellar contamination. After correcting for systematic effects we measure galaxy bias over a broad range of linear scales relative to mass clustering predicted from the Planck $\Lambda$CDM model, finding agreement with CFHTLS measurements with $\chi^2$ of 4.0 (8.7) with 5 degrees of freedom for the TPZ (BPZ) redshifts. We test a "linear bias" model, in which the galaxy clustering is a fixed multiple of the predicted non-linear dark-matter clustering. The precision of the data allow us to determine that the linear bias model describes the observed galaxy clustering to $2.5\%$ accuracy down to scales at least $4$ to $10$ times smaller than those on which linear theory is expected to be sufficient., Comment: 23 pages, 18 figures, matches the version published in MNRAS. The knowledge of the spin diffusion length $\lambda_{A}$ is a prerequisite for the estimation of the spin Hall angle. We investigate spin current absorption of materials with small $\lambda_{A}$ using AuW stripes inserted in lateral spin-valves. Width variations of the AuW stripe lead to drastic changes of the spin absorption, which cannot be explained by conventional analysis. We show that the spin-current polarization and the spin accumulation attenuation in the vicinity of the spin absorber must to be precisely taken into account for accurate estimation of $\lambda_{A}$. We propose an analytical model supported by numerical calculations that allows to extract proper $\lambda_{A}$ values of spin Hall effect materials.

We study the enhancement of the branching ratios of the decays $h \to \gamma \gamma, \, \gamma Z$ in the Two Higgs Doublet Model Type III, assuming a four-zero Yukawa Texture and a general Higgs potential. We show that these processes are very sensitive to the flavor pattern of the Yukawa texture and the structure of the triple coupling $h H^\pm H^\mp$ from the Higgs potential. We can accomodate the parameters of the model such that one can obtain the $h \to\gamma \gamma$ rates reported by the LHC and at the same time we can get a $ h \to \gamma Z$ fraction larger than in the SM and within experimental reach. We have carried out measurements of domain wall dynamics in a Pt/Co/GdOx(t) wedge sample with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. When driven by an easy-axis field Hz in the presence of an in-plane field Hx, the domain wall expansion along x is anisotropic, as expected for samples presenting Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. In the creep regime, the sign and the value of the domain wall velocity asymmetry changes along the wedge. We show that in our samples the domain wall speed vs. Hx curves in the creep regime cannot be explained simply in terms of the variation of the domain wall energy with Hx, as suggested by previous works. For this reason the strength and the sign of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) cannot be extracted from these measurements. To obtain reliable information on the DMI strength using magnetic field-induced domain wall dynamics, measurements have been performed with high fields, bringing the DW close to the flow regime of propagation. In this case, the large values of DMI are coherent with those obtained from current-driven domain wall dynamics., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

The possible existence of \eta'-nucleus bound states has been put forward through theoretical and experimental studies. It is strongly related to the \eta' mass at finite density, which is expected to be reduced because of the interplay between the $U_A(1)$ anomaly and partial restoration of chiral symmetry. We analyze the prospects for observing the CP-even neutral Higgs bosons (h and H) in their decays into flavor violating $b \bar s+ c.c.$ channels at the proposed LHeC, with $\sqrt s \approx 1.3$ TeV, in the 2HDM Type-III, assuming a four-zero texture in the Yukawa matrices and a general Higgs potential. We consider theoretically consistent scenarios in agreement with current experimental data from flavor and Higgs physics. We investigate the charged current production process $\nu_e \phi q$ in presence of flavor violating decays of the Higgs bosons, that lead to a 3-jets + $E\!\!\!\!/_T$ signature. We demand exactly two jets, one tagged $b$-jet and one light-flavor jet, all in the central rapidity region. The remaining jet (originated by the remanent quark $q$) is tagged in the forward or backward regions and this together with a central jet veto (not more than one light-flavor jet) are essential criterions to enhance the signal--to--background rates. We consider the most relevant Standard Model (SM) backgrounds, treating $c$-jets separately from light-flavor and gluon ones, while allowing for mis-tagging. We find that the SM-like Higgs boson, $h$, would be accessible within several parameter configurations of our model at approximately the 1-2$\sigma$ level with 100 fb$^{-1}$ of data. We also find that the heaviest neutral Higgs boson, $H$, with mass up to 150 GeV, would have a 1$\sigma$ significance for the same data sample. At the end of the LHeC running, one would have ten times data accumulation and for all the Higgs masses the significances are enhanced so as to allow for detection of both the $h$ and $H$ state. Hence, one of the most viable extensions of 2HDMs with FCNC's generated at tree level but controlled by a four-zero texture approach in the Yukawa matrices, as opposed to the adoption of ad hoc discrete symmetries, could be put under scrutiny at a future LHeC., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures. The mass of the {\eta}' meson is theoretically expected to be reduced at finite density, which indicates the existence of {\eta}'-nucleus bound states. The ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe has been investigated by high field X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the U-M$_{4,5}$ and Co/Ge-K edges. The analysis of the branching ratio and XMCD at the U-M$_{4,5}$ edges reveals that the U-5$f$ electrons count is close to 3. The orbital ($\sim0.70\,\mu_B$) and spin ($\sim-0.30\,\mu_B$) moments of U at 2.1K and 17T (H//c) have been determined. Their ratio ($\sim-2.3$) suggests a significant delocalization of the 5$f$ electron states. The similar field dependences of the local U/Co and the macroscopic magnetization indicate that the Co moment is induced by the U moment. The XMCD at the Co/Ge-K edges reveal the presence of small Co-4$p$ and Ge-4$p$ orbital moments parallel to the macroscopic magnetization. In addition, the Co-3$d$ moment is estimated to be at most of the order of 0.1$\mu_B$ at 17T. Our results rule out the possibility of an unusual polarisability of the U and Co moments as well as their antiparallel coupling. Massive spectroscopic survey are becoming trendy in astrophysics and cosmology, as they can address new fundamental knowledge such as Galactic Archaeology and probe the nature of the mysterious Dark Energy. To enable massive spectroscopic surveys, new technology are being developed to place thousands of optical fibers at a given position on a focal plane. These technology needs to be: 1) accurate, with micrometer positional accuracy; 2) fast to minimize overhead; 3) robust to minimize failure; and 4) low cost. In this paper we present the development of a new 8-mm in diameter fiber positionner robot using two 4mm DC-brushless gearmotors, developed in the context of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument. This development was conducted by a Spanish-Swiss (ES-CH) team led by the Instituto de F\'isica Te\'orica (UAM-CSIC) and the Laboratoire d'Astrophysique (EPFL), in collaboration with the AVS company in Spain and the Faulhaber group (MPS & FAULHABER-MINIMOTOR) in Switzerland., Comment: 11 pages, 19 figures, submitted to A&A, comments are welcome

The effect of $Z_3$ symmetry on the general Two Higgs Doublet Model is explored. Of particular interest is the question of what can a $Z_3$ symmetry do beyond the usual case with $Z_2$. There are two independent scenarios that give some interesting results: first, by giving non-trivial charges to the Standard Model fermions, it is possible to use the $Z_3$ symmetry of the scalar potential to generate potentially useful Yukawa textures. This is not possible with $Z_2$. A series of possibilities is presented where their viability is addressed and a specific example in the quark sector is given for concreteness. The second venue of interest is in the area of inert doublets. It is shown that by considering the Standard Model plus two additional inert doublet scalars, i.e. a Dark Two Higgs Doublet Model, together with $Z_3$, a scenario can be obtained that differs from the $Z_2$ case. Searches for light $H^\pm$s via $t\to H^\pm b$ are being carried out at the LHC. Herein, it is normally assumed that the dominant decay channels are $H^\pm\to \tau\nu$ and $H^\pm\to cs$ and separate data analyses are performed with comparable sensitivity to the underlying model assumptions. However, the $H^\pm\to cb$ decay rate can be as large as $80\%$ in models with two or more Higgs doublets with natural flavour conservation, while satisfying the constraint from $b\to s\gamma$ for $m_{H^\pm}< m_t$. LOFT (Large Observatory For x-ray Timing) is one of the ESA M3 missions selected within the Cosmic Vision program in 2011 to carry out an assessment phase study and compete for a launch opportunity in 2022-2024. The phase-A studies of all M3 missions were completed at the end of 2013. LOFT is designed to carry on-board two instruments with sensitivity in the 2-50 keV range: a 10 m 2 class Large Area Detector (LAD) with a <1{\deg} collimated FoV and a wide field monitor (WFM) making use of coded masks and providing an instantaneous coverage of more than 1/3 of the sky. The prime goal of the WFM will be to detect transient sources to be observed by the LAD. However, thanks to its unique combination of a wide field of view (FoV) and energy resolution (better than 500 eV), the WFM will be also an excellent monitoring instrument to study the long term variability of many classes of X-ray sources. The WFM consists of 10 independent and identical coded mask cameras arranged in 5 pairs to provide the desired sky coverage. We provide here an overview of the instrument design, configuration, and capabilities of the LOFT WFM. The compact and modular design of the WFM could easily make the instrument concept adaptable for other missions., Comment: Proc. The Large Observatory For x-ray Timing (LOFT) was studied within ESA M3 Cosmic Vision framework and participated in the final down-selection for a launch slot in 2022-2024. Thanks to the unprecedented combination of effective area and spectral resolution of its main instrument, LOFT will study the behaviour of matter under extreme conditions, such as the strong gravitational field in the innermost regions of accretion flows close to black holes and neutron stars, and the supra-nuclear densities in the interior of neutron stars. The science payload is based on a Large Area Detector (LAD, 10 m 2 effective area, 2-30 keV, 240 eV spectral resolution, 1 deg collimated field of view) and a WideField Monitor (WFM, 2-50 keV, 4 steradian field of view, 1 arcmin source location accuracy, 300 eV spectral resolution). The WFM is equipped with an on-board system for bright events (e.g. GRB) localization. The trigger time and position of these events are broadcast to the ground within 30 s from discovery. We present the result of an extended experimental characterization of the hexagonal intermetallic Haucke compound NpNi$_{5}$. By combining macroscopic and shell-specific techniques, we determine the 5$f$-shell occupation number $n_f$ close to 4 for the Np ions, together with orbital and spin components of the ordered moment in the ferromagnetic phase below T$_C$ = 16 K ($\mu_{S}$ = -1.88~$\mu_{B}$ and $\mu_{L}$ = 3.91~$\mu_{B}$). The apparent coexistence of ordered and disordered phases observed in the M\"{o}ssbauer spectra is explained in terms of slow relaxation between the components of a quasi-triplet ground state. The ratio between the expectation value of the magnetic dipole operator and the spin magnetic moment ($3\langle T_{z}\rangle/ \langle S_{z}\rangle$ = +1.43) is positive and large, suggesting a localized character of the 5$f$ electrons. The angular part of the spin-orbit coupling ($\langle\vec{\ell}\cdot\vec{s}\rangle$ = -5.55) is close to the value of -6.25 calculated for trivalent Np ions in intermediate coupling approximation. The results are discussed against the prediction of first-principle electronic structure calculations based on the spin-polarized local spin density approximation plus Hubbard interaction, and of a mean field model taking into account crystal field and exchange interactions., Comment: Accepted manuscript, to be published in Phys. Aims. In this work, we present an extended study of the dust environment of a sample of short period comets and their dynamical history. With this aim, we characterized the dust tails when the comets are active, and we made a statistical study to determine their dynamical evolution. The targets selected were 22P/Kopff, 30P/Reinmuth 1, 78P/Gehrels 2, 115P/Maury, 118P/Shoemaker-Levy 4, 123P/West-Hartley, 157P/Tritton, 185/Petriew, and P/2011 W2 (Rinner). Methods. We use two different observational data: a set of images taken at the Observatorio de Sierra Nevada and the Afrho curves provided by the amateur astronomical association Cometas-Obs. To model these observations, we use our Monte Carlo dust tail code. From this analysis, we derive the dust parameters, which best describe the dust environment: dust loss rates, ejection velocities, and size distribution of particles. On the other hand, we use a numerical integrator to study the dynamical history of the comets, which allows us to determine with a 90% of confidence level the time spent by these objects in the region of Jupiter Family Comets. Results. From the Monte Carlo dust tail code, we derived three categories attending to the amount of dust emitted: Weakly active (115P, 157P, and Rinner), moderately active (30P, 123P, and 185P), and highly active (22P, 78P, and 118P). The dynamical studies showed that the comets of this sample are young in the Jupiter Family region, where the youngest ones are 22P (100 yr), 78P (500 yr), and 118P (600 yr). The study points to a certain correlation between comet activity and time spent in the Jupiter Family region, although this trend is not always fulfilled. The largest particle sizes are not tightly constrained, so that the total dust mass derived should be regarded as lower limits.}, Comment: 14 pages, 25 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A
