Search

We have made an extensive 1.2mm continuum mosaicing study of the Cygnus X molecular cloud complex using the MAMBO cameras at the IRAM 30 m telescope. We then compared our mm maps with mid-IR images, and have made SiO(2-1) follow-up observations of the best candidate progenitors of high-mass stars. Our complete study of Cygnus X provides, for the first time, an unbiased census of massive young stellar objects. We discover 129 massive dense cores, among which 42 are probable precursors of high-mass stars. Our study qualifies 17 cores as good candidates for hosting massive IR-quiet protostars, while up to 25 cores potentially host high-luminosity IR protostars. We fail to discover the high-mass analogs of pre-stellar dense cores in CygnusX, but find several massive starless clumps that might be gravitationally bound. Since our sample is derived from a single molecular complex and covers every embedded phase of high-mass star formation, it gives the first statistical estimates of their lifetime. In contrast to what is found for low-mass class 0 and class I phases, the IR-quiet protostellar phase of high-mass stars may last as long as their better-known high-luminosity IR phase. The statistical lifetimes of high-mass protostars and pre-stellar cores (~ 3 x 10^4 yr and < 10^3 yr) in Cygnus X are one and two order(s) of magnitude smaller, respectively, than what is found in nearby, low-mass star-forming regions. We therefore propose that high-mass pre-stellar and protostellar cores are in a highly dynamic state, as expected in a molecular cloud where turbulent processes dominate., Comment: 32 pages, 62 figures to be published in Astronomy & Astrophysics journal

We present high angular resolution 1.3 mm continuum, methyl cyanide molecular line, and 7 mm continuum observations made with the Submillimeter Array and the Very Large Array, toward the most highly obscured and southern part of the massive star forming region OMC1S located behind the Orion Nebula. We find two flattened and rotating molecular structures with sizes of a few hundred astronomical units suggestive of circumbinary molecular rings produced by the presence of two stars with very compact circumstellar disks with sizes and separations of about 50 AU, associated with the young stellar objects 139-409 and 134-411. Furthermore, these two circumbinary rotating rings are related to two compact and bright {\it hot molecular cores}. The dynamic mass of the binary systems obtained from our data are $\geq$ 4 M$_\odot$ for 139-409 and $\geq$ 0.5 M$_\odot$ for 134-411. This result supports the idea that intermediate-mass stars will form through {\it circumstellar disks} and jets/outflows, as the low mass stars do. Furthermore, when intermediate-mass stars are in multiple systems they seem to form a circumbinary ring similar to those seen in young, multiple low-mass systems (e.g., GG Tau and UY Aur)., Comment: Accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysics

A systematic study of a large sample of sources, covering a wide range in galactocentric distances, masses and luminosities, is a fast and efficient way of obtaining a good overview of the different stages of high-mass star formation. With these goals in mind, we have started a survey of 40 color selected IRAS sources south of -20 degrees declination with the APEX telescope on Chajnantor, Chile. We present VLA and PdBI subarcsecond images (0.15"-0.6") of the radiocontinuum emission at 7 mm and of the SO2 J=19_{2,18}-18_{3,15} and J=27_{8,20}-28_{7,21} lines toward the Cepheus A HW2 region. The SO2 images reveal the presence of a hot core internally heated by an intermediate mass protostar, and a circumstellar rotating disk around the HW2 radio jet with size 600AUx100AU and mass of 1M_sun. Keplerian rotation for the disk velocity gradient of 5 kms-1 requires a 9 M_sun central star, which cannot explain the total luminosity observed in the region. This may indicate that the disk does not rotate with a Keplerian law due to the extreme youth of this object. Our high sensitivity radiocontinuum image at 7 mm shows in addition to the ionized jet, an extended emission to the west (and marginally to the south) of the HW2 jet, filling the south-west cavity of the HW2 disk. From the morphology and location of this free-free continuum emission at centimeter and millimeter wavelengths (spectral index of 0.4-1.5), we propose that the disk is photoevaporating due to the UV radiation from the central star. All this indicates that the Cepheus A HW2 region harbors a cluster of massive stars. Due to its relatively small distance (725 pc), the Cepheus A East star-forming region is an ideal laboratory to study massive star formation processes. Based on its morphology, it has been suggested that the flattened molecular gas distribution around the YSO HW2 may be a 350-AU-radius massive protostellar disk. Goal of our work is to ascertain the nature of this structure. We have employed the Plateau de Bure Interferometer to acquire (sub-)arcsecond-resolution imaging of high-density and shock tracers, such as methyl cyanide (CH3CN) and silicon monoxide (SiO), towards the HW2 position. On the 1-arcsecond (about 725 AU) scale, the flattened distribution of molecular gas around HW2 appears to be due to the projected superposition, on the plane of the sky, of at least three protostellar objects, of which at least one is powering a molecular outflow at a small angle with respect to the line of sight. The presence of a protostellar disk around HW2 is not ruled out, but such structure is likely to be detected on a smaller spatial scale, or using different molecular tracers., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

The young massive star-forming region IRAS05358+3543 was observed at high-spatial resolution in the continuum emission at 3.1 and 1.2mm with the Plateau de Bure Interferometer, and at 875 and 438mum with the Submillimeter Array. We resolve at least four continuum sub-sources that are likely of protostellar nature. Two of them are potentially part of a proto-binary system with a projected separation of 1700AU. Additional (sub)mm continuum peaks are not necessarily harboring protostars but maybe caused by the multiple molecular outflows. The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the sub-sources show several features. The main power house mm1, which is associated with CH3OH maser emission, a hypercompact HII region and a mid-infrared source, exhibits a typical SED with a free-free emission component at cm and long mm wavelengths and a cold dust component in the (sub)mm part of the spectrum (spectral index between 1.2mm and 438mum alpha~3.6). The free-free emission corresponds to a Lyman continuum flux of an embedded 13Msun B1 star. The coldest source of the region, mm3, has alpha~3.7 between 1.2mm and 875mum, but has lower than expected fluxes in the shorter wavelength 438mum band. This turnover of the Planck-function sets an upper limit on the dust temperature of mm3 of approximately 20K. The uv-data analysis of the density structure of individual sub-cores reveals distributions with power-law indices between 1.5 and 2. Stars form in the densest, coldest, most quiescent regions of molecular clouds. Molecules provide the only probes which can reveal the dynamics, physics, chemistry and evolution of these regions, but our understanding of the molecular inventory of sources and how this is related to their physical state and evolution is rudimentary and incomplete. The Spectral Legacy Survey (SLS) is one of seven surveys recently approved by the JCMT Board. Starting in 2007, the SLS will produce a spectral imaging survey of the content and distribution of all the molecules detected in the 345 GHz atmospheric window (between 332 GHz and 373 GHz) towards a sample of 5 sources. Our intended targets are: a low mass core (NGC1333 IRAS4), 3 high mass cores spanning a range of star forming environments and evolutionary states (W49, AFGL2591, and IRAS20126), and a PDR (the Orion Bar). The SLS will use the unique spectral imaging capabilities of HARP-B/ACSIS to study the molecular inventory and the physical structure of these objects, which span different evolutionary stages and physical environments, to probe their evolution during the star formation process. As its name suggests, the SLS will provide a lasting data legacy from the JCMT that is intended to benefit the entire astronomical community. As such, the entire data set (including calibrated spectral datacubes, maps of molecular emission, line identifications, and calculations of the gas temperature and column density) will be publicly available., Comment: 34 pages, 1 figure - Accepted to PASP

Context: The M16 nebula is a relatively nearby Hii region, powered by O stars from the open cluster NGC 6611, which borders to a Giant Molecular Cloud. Radiation from these hot stars has sculpted columns of dense obscuring material on a few arcmin scales. The interface between these pillars and the hot ionised medium provides a textbook example of a Photodissociation Region (PDR). Aims: To constrain the physical conditions of the atomic and molecular material with submillimeter spectroscopic observations. Methods: We used the APEX submillimeter telescope to map a ~3'x3' region in the CO J=3-2, 4-3 and 7-6 rotational lines, and a subregion in atomic carbon lines. We also observed C18O(3-2) and CO(7-6) with longer integrations on five peaks found in the CO(3-2) map. The large scale structure of the pillars is derived from the molecular lines' emission distribution. We estimate the magnitude of the velocity gradient at the tips of the pillars and use LVG modelling to constrain their densities and temperatures. Excitation temperatures and carbon column densities are derived from the atomic carbon lines. Results: The atomic carbon lines are optically thin and excitation temperatures are of order 60 K to 100 K, well consistent with observations of other Hii region-molecular cloud interfaces. We observed the high velocity outflow originating from NGC6334I in several CO transitions with the APEX telescope, with the goal of deriving the physical parameters of the gas. Using an LVG analysis, we studied line ratios between the CO(3-2), CO(4-3), and CO(7-6) data as a function of the density and of the kinetic temperature of the gas. An upper limit on the CO column density is derived by comparison with 13CO data. We constrained the temperature to be higher than 50 K and the H_2 density to values higher than n~10^4 cm^{-3} towards the peak position in the red lobe, while T>15 K and n>10^3 cm^{-3} are derived towards the peak position in the blue lobe. The physical parameters of the outflow, its mass and its energetics, have been computed using the temperatures derived from this analysis. We conclude that high kinetic temperatures are present in the outflow and traced by high excitation CO lines. Observations of high-J CO lines are thus needed to infer reliable values of the kinetic temperatures and of the other physical parameters in outflows., Comment: APEX A&A special issue, accepted

Unbiased molecular line surveys are a powerful tool for analyzing the physical and chemical parameters of astronomical objects and are the only means for obtaining a complete view of the molecular inventory for a given source. The present work stands for the first such investigation of a photon-dominated region. The first results of an ongoing millimeter-wave survey obtained towards the Orion Bar are reported. The APEX telescope in combination with the APEX-2A facility receiver was employed in this investigation. We derived the physical parameters of the gas through LVG analyses of the methanol and formaldehyde data. Information on the sulfur and deuterium chemistry of photon-dominated regions is obtained from detections of several sulfur-bearing molecules and DCN., Comment: APEX A&A special issue, accepted

We present a submm study of the massive hot core G327.3-0.6 that constrains its physical parameters and environment. The APEX telescope was used to image CO and N2H+ emission, to observe lines from other molecules toward a hot and a cold molecular core, and to measure the continuum flux density of the hot core. In the C18O J=3-2 line, two clumps were found, one associated with the HII region G327.3-0.5 and the other associated with the hot core. An additional cold clump is found 30 arcsec (0.4 pc) northeast of the hot core in bright N2H+ emission. From the the continuum data, we calculate a mass of 420 Msol and a size of 0.1 pc for the hot core. A new, more accurate position of the hot core is reported, which allows the association of the core with a bright mid-infrared source. The luminosity of the hot core is estimated to be between 5 and 15 10^4 Lsol. The cosmic-ray ionization rate (zeta) of dense molecular clouds is a key parameter for their dynamics and chemistry. Variations of zeta are well established, but it is unclear if these are related to source column density or to Galactic location. Using the APEX telescope, we have mapped the 364 GHz line of H3O+ in the Sgr B2 region and observed the 307 GHz line at selected positions. With the IRAM 30-m telescope we have observed the 203 GHz line of H2O-18 at the same positions. Strong H3O+ emission is detected over a ~3x2 pc region, indicating H3O+ column densities of 10^15 - 10^16 cm^-2 in an 18" beam. The H3O+ abundance of ~3 x 10^-9 and H3O+/H2O ratio of ~1/50 in the Sgr B2 envelope are consistent with models with zeta ~4 x 10^-16 s^-1, 3x lower than derived from H3+ observations toward Sgr A, but 10x that of local dense clouds. The ionization rates of interstellar clouds thus seem to be to first order determined by the ambient cosmic-ray flux, while propagation effects cause a factor of ~3 decrease from diffuse to dense clouds., Comment: Accepted by A&A Letters (APEX special issue); four A4 pages, two figures

Aims:To obtain insight into the physical structure of the warm gas in the inner envelope of protostars and the interaction with the outflow. Methods: Sub-millimeter observations of 12CO, 13CO and/or C18O in J=3-2, J=4-3 and J=7-6 were obtained with the APEX Telescope towards IRAS 12496-7650, an intermediate mass young stellar object. The data are compared to ISO-LWS observations of CO J=14-13 up to J=19-18 lines to test the different proposed origins of the CO lines. Results: The outflow is prominently detected in the 3-2 and 4-3 lines, but not seen at similar velocities in the 7-6 line, constraining the temperature in the high-velocity (> 5 km/s from line center) gas to less than 50 K, much lower than inferred from the analysis of the ISO-LWS data. In addition, no isothermal gas model can reproduce the emission in both the 7-6 and the higher-J ISO-LWS lines.The 7-6 line probably originates in the inner (<250 AU) region of the envelope at ~150 K. Detailed radiative transfer calculations suggest that the ISO-LWS lines are excited by a different mechanism, possibly related to the larger-scale outflow. All possible mechanisms on scales smaller than 8 " are excluded. High-resolution continuum as well as high-J 12CO and isotopic line mapping are needed to better constrain the structure of the warm gas in the inner envelope and the interaction with the outflow., Comment: Accepted for A&A special issue on APEX first results. 4 pages, 2 figures

High-mass star-forming regions are known to have a rich molecular spectrum from many species. Some of the very highly excited lines are emitted from very hot and dense gas close to the central object(s). The physics and chemistry of the inner cores of two high mass star forming regions, NGC6334(I) and G327.3-0.6, shall be characterized. Submillimeter line surveys with the APEX telescope provide spectra which sample many molecular lines at high excitation stages. Partial spectral surveys were obtained, the lines were identified, physical parameters were determined through fitting of the spectra. Both sources show similar spectra that are comparable to that of the only other high mass star forming region ever surveyed in this frequency range}, Orion-KL, but with an even higher line density. Aims: Our goal is to set constraints on the evolutionary state of the dense core Cha-MMS1 in the Chamaeleon I molecular cloud. Methods: We analyze molecular line observations carried out with the new submillimeter telescope APEX. We look for outflow signatures around the dense core and probe its chemical structure, which we compare to predictions of models of gas-phase chemistry. We also use the public database of the Spitzer Space Telescope (SST) to compare Cha-MMS1 with the two Class 0 protostars IRAM 04191 and L1521F, which are at the same distance. Results: We measure a large deuterium fractionation for N2H+ (11 +/- 3 %), intermediate between the prestellar core L1544 and the very young Class 0 protostar L1521F. It is larger than for HCO+ (2.5 +/- 0.9 %), which is probably the result of depletion removing HCO+ from the high-density inner region. Our CO(3-2) map reveals the presence of a bipolar outflow driven by the Class I protostar Ced 110 IRS 4 but we do not find evidence for an outflow powered by Cha-MMS1. We also report the detection of Cha-MMS1 at 24, 70 and 160 microns by the instrument MIPS of the SST, at a level nearly an order of magnitude lower than IRAM 04191 and L1521F. Conclusions: Cha-MMS1 appears to have already formed a compact object, either the first hydrostatic core at the very end of the prestellar phase, or an extremely young protostar that has not yet powered any outflow, at the very beginning of the Class 0 accretion phase., Comment: Accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysics as a letter, to appear in the special issue on the APEX first results

Context : Highly-collimated outflows are believed to be the earliest stage in outflow evolution, so their study is essential for understanding the processes driving outflows. The BHR71 Bok globule is known to harbour such a highly-collimated outflow, which is powered by a protostar belonging to a protobinary system. Aims : We aimed at investigating the interaction of collimated outflows with the ambient molecular cloud by using molecular tracers. Methods : We mapped the BHR71 highly-collimated outflow in CO(3-2) with the APEX telescope, and observed several bright points of the outflow in the molecular transitions CO(4-3), 13CO(3-2), C18O(3-2), and CH3OH(7-6). We use an LVG code to characterise the temperature enhancements in these regions. Results : In our CO(3-2) map, the second outflow driven by IRS2, which is the second source of the binary system, is completely revealed and shown to be bipolar. We also measure temperature enhancements in the lobes. The CO and methanol LVG modelling points to temperatures between 30 and 50K in the IRS1 outflow, while the IRS2 outflow seems to be warmer (up to 300K)., Comment: 4 pages, 5 Figures, accepted by A&A Letters, to appear in the APEX First results special issue

We discuss the first astronomical detection of the CF+ (fluoromethylidynium) ion, obtained by observations of the J=1-0 (102.6 GHz), J=2-1 (205.2 GHz) and J=3-2 (307.7 GHz) rotational transitions toward the Orion Bar region. Our search for CF+, carried out using the IRAM 30m and APEX 12m telescopes, was motivated by recent theoretical models that predict CF+ abundances of a few times 1.E-10 in UV-irradiated molecular regions where C+ is present. The CF+ ion is produced by exothermic reactions of C+ with HF. Because fluorine atoms can react exothermically with H2, HF is predicted to be the dominant reservoir of fluorine, not only in well-shielded regions but also in the surface layers of molecular clouds where the C+ abundance is large. The observed CF+ line intensities imply the presence of CF+ column densities of at least 1.E+12 cm-2 over a region of size at least ~ 1 arcmin, in good agreement with theoretical predictions. They provide support for our current theories of interstellar fluorine chemistry, which suggest that hydrogen fluoride should be ubiquitous in interstellar gas clouds and widely detectable in absorption by future satellite and airborne observatories., Comment: 4 pages, including 4 figures. Results: We report the detection of broad HCO+(1-0) lines (10 mK < T < 0.5 K). The interpretation of 10 of the HCO+ velocity components is conducted in conjunction with that of the associated optically thin 13CO emission. The derived HCO+ column densities span a broad range, $10^{11}< N(HCO+)/\Delta v <4 \times 10^{12} \rm cm^2/(km/s^{-1}$, and the inferred HCO+ abundances, $2 \times 10^{-10}

We report the first astronomical detection of the CF+ (fluoromethylidynium) ion obtained by recent observations of its J = 1 - 0 (102.6 GHz), J = 2 - 1 (205.2 GHz), and J = 3 - 2 (307.7 GHz) pure rotational emissions toward the Orion Bar. Our search for CF+, carried out using the IRAM 30m and APEX 12m telescopes, was motivated by recent theoretical models that predict CF+ abundances of a few x E-10 in UV-irradiated molecular regions where C+ is present. The measurements confirm the predictions. We report the identification of a sample of potential High-Mass Starless Cores (HMSCs). The cores were discovered by comparing images of the fields containing candidate High-Mass Protostellar Objects (HMPOs) at 1.2mm and mid-infrared (8.3um; MIR) wavelengths. While the HMPOs are detected at both wavelengths, several cores emitting at 1.2mm in the same fields show absorption or no emission at the MIR wavelength. We argue that the absorption is caused by cold dust. The estimated masses of a few 10^2Msun - 10^3 Msun and the lack of IR emission suggests that they may be massive cold cores in a pre-stellar phase, which could presumably form massive stars eventually. Ammonia (1,1) and (2,2) observations of the cores indicate smaller velocity dispersions and lower rotation temperatures compared to HMPOs and UCHII regions suggesting a quiescent pre-stellar stage. We propose that these newly discovered cores are good candidates for the HMSC stage in high-mass star-formation. We present a theoretical investigation of the chemistry of fluorine-bearing molecules in diffuse and dense interstellar gas clouds. The chemistry of interstellar fluorine is qualitatively different from that of any other element, because - unlike the neutral atoms of any other element found in diffuse or dense molecular clouds - atomic fluorine undergoes an exothermic reaction with molecular hydrogen. Over a wide range of conditions attained within interstellar gas clouds, the product of that reaction - hydrogen fluoride - is predicted to be the dominant gas-phase reservoir of interstellar fluorine nuclei. Our model predicts HF column densities ~ 1.E+13 cm-2 in dark clouds and column densities as large as 1.E-11 cm-2 in diffuse interstellar gas clouds with total visual extinctions as small as 0.1 mag. Such diffuse clouds will be detectable by means of absorption line spectroscopy of the J = 1 - 0 transition at 243.2 micron using the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) and the Herschel Space Observatory (HSO). The CF+ ion is predicted to be the second most abundant fluorine-bearing molecule, with typical column densities a factor ~ 100 below those of HF; with its lowest two rotational transitions in the millimeter-wave spectral region, CF+ may be detectable from ground-based observatories. HF absorption in quasar spectra is a potential probe of molecular gas at high redshift, providing a possible bridge between the UV/optical observations capable of probing H2 in low column density systems and the radio/millimeter-wavelength observations that probe intervening molecular clouds of high extinction and large molecular fraction; at redshifts beyond ~ 0.3, HF is potentially detectable from ground-based submillimeter observatories in several atmospheric transmission windows., Comment: 34 pages, including 11 figures (10 color), accepted for publication in ApJ

We present IRAM 30m and JCMT observations of HDO lines towards the solar-type protostar IRAS 16293-2422. Five HDO transitions have been detected on-source, and two were unfruitfully searched for towards a bright spot of the outflow of IRAS 16293-2422. We interpret the data by means of the Ceccarelli, Hollenbach and Tielens (1996) model, and derive the HDO abundance in the warm inner and cold outer parts of the envelope. The emission is well explained by a jump model, with an inner abundance of 1e-7 and an outer abundance lower than 1e-9 (3 sigma). This result is in favor of HDO enhancement due to ice evaporation from the grains in theinner envelope. The deuteration ratio HDO/H2O is found to be f_in=3% and f_out < 0.2% (3 sigma) in the inner and outer envelope respectively and therefore, the fractionation also undergoes a jump in the inner part of the envelope. These results are consistent with the formation of water in the gas phase during the cold prestellar core phase and storage of the molecules on the grains, but do not explain why observations of H2O ices consistently derive a H2O ice abundance of several 1e-5 to 1e-4, some two orders of magnitude larger than the gas phase abundance of water in the hot core around IRAS 16293-2422., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures accepted by A&A

Molecular line CN, CS and mm continuum observations of two intermediate- to high-mass star-forming regions - IRAS20293+3952 and IRAS19410+2336 - obtained with the Plateau de Bure Interferometer at high spatial resolution reveal interesting characteristics of the gas and dust emission. In spite of the expectation that the CN and CS morphology might closely follow the dense gas traced by the dust continuum, both molecules avoid the most central cores. Comparing the relative line strengths of various CN hyperfine components, this appears not to be an opacity effect but to be due to chemical and physical effects. The CN data also indicate enhanced emission toward the different molecular outflows in the region. Regarding CS, avoiding the central cores can be due to high optical depth, but the data also show that the CS emission is nearly always associated with the outflows of the region. Therefore, neither CS nor CN appear well suited for dense gas and disk studies in these two sources, and we recommend the use of different molecules for future massive disk studies. An analysis of the 1 and 3mm continuum fluxes toward IRAS20293+3952 reveals that the dust opacity index beta is lower than the canonical value of 2. Tentatively, we identify a decreasing gradient of beta from the edge of the core to the core center. This could be due to increasing optical depth toward the core center and/or grain growth within the densest cores and potential central disks. We detect 3mm continuum emission toward the collimated outflow emanating from IRAS20293+3952. We report the detection of H2CO (formaldehyde) around the carbon-rich AGB star, IRC+10216. We find a fractional abundance with respect to molecular hydrogen of x(H2CO)= (1.3 {+1.5}{-0.8}) x 10^{-8}. This corresponds to a formaldehyde abundance with respect to water vapor of x(H2CO)/x(H2O)=(1.1 +/- 0.2) x 10^{-2}, in line with the formaldehyde abundances found in Solar System comets, and indicates that the putative extrasolar cometary system around IRC+10216 may have a similar chemical composition to Solar System comets. However, we also failed to detect CH3OH (methanol) around IRC+10216 and our upper limit of x(CH3OH)/x(H2O) < 7.7 x 10^{-4}, (3 sigma), indicates that methanol is substantially underabundant in IRC+10216, compared to Solar System comets. We also conclude, based on offset observations, that formaldehyde has an extended source in the envelope of IRC+10216 and may be produced by the photodissociation of a parent molecule, similar to the production mechanism for formaldehyde in Solar System comet comae. Preliminary mapping observations also indicate a possible asymmetry in the spatial distribution of formaldehyde around IRC+10216, but higher signal-to-noise observations are required to confirm this finding. We present high-spatial resolution Plateau de Bure Interferometer CO(2-1) and SiO(2-1) observations of one intermediate-mass and one high-mass star-forming region. The intermediate-mass region IRAS20293+3952 exhibits four molecular outflows, one being as collimated as the highly collimated jet-like outflows observed in low-mass star formation sources. Furthermore, comparing the data with additional infrared H2 and cm observations we see indications that the nearby ultracompact HII region triggers a shock wave interacting with the outflow. The high-mass region IRAS19217+1651 exhibits a bipolar outflow as well and the region is dominated by the central driving source. Adding two more sources from the literature, we compare position-velocity diagrams of the intermediate- to high-mass sources with previous studies in the low-mass regime. We find similar kinematic signatures, some sources can be explained by jet-driven outflows whereas other are better constrained by wind-driven models. The data also allow to estimate accretion rates varying from a few times 10^{-5}Msun/yr for the intermediate-mass sources to a few times 10^{-4}Msun/yr for the high-mass source, consistent with models explaining star formation of all masses via accretion processes., Comment: 14 pages text, 4 tables, 8 figures, accepted for ApJ

Studies of evolved massive stars indicate that they form in a clustered mode. During the earliest evolutionary stages, these regions are embedded within their natal cores. Here, we show high-spatial-resolution interferometric dust continuum observations disentangling the cluster-like structure of a young massive star-forming region. The derived protocluster mass distribution is consistent with the stellar initial mass function. Thus, fragmentation of the initial massive cores may determine the initial mass function and the masses of the final stars. This implies that stars of all masses can form via accretion processes, and coalescence of intermediate-mass protostars appears not to be necessary., Comment: 5 pages text plus 2 figures

PdBI high-spatial resolution CO observations combined with near-infrared H2 data disentangle at least 7 (maybe even 9) molecular outflows in the massive star-forming region IRAS19410+2336. Position-velocity diagrams of the outflows reveal Hubble-like relationships similar to outflows driven by low-mass objects. Estimated accretion rates are of the order 10^-4 Msun/yr, sufficiently high to overcome the radiation pressure and form massive stars via disk-mediated accretion processes. The single-dish large-scale mm continuum cores fragment into several compact condensations at the higher spatial resolution of the PdBI which is expected due to the clustering in massive star formation. While single-dish data give a simplified picture of the source, sufficiently high spatial resolution resolves the structures into outflows resembling those of low-mass star-forming cores. Research on interstellar ND3 is reviewed and updated from the discovery papers. Results from observations of a dozen sources at centimeter and submillimeter wavelengths are presented. The two data sets are consistent, but do not constrain the excitation conditions in the ND3-emitting gas. The column density ratios of NH3:NH2D, NH2D:ND2H and ND2H:ND3, observed in similar sized beams, are ~10, and present a challenge for both the gas-phase and the grain-surface chemistry scenarios of deuterium fractionation. We report the detection of direct l-type transitions towards the proto-planetary nebula CRL 618 during a study of vibrationally excited carbon chains. The J=8,10,11,12,13,14 DJ=0 transitions of HCN in its first excited bending mode v2=1 were detected in absorption against the continuum of the central HII region making use of the Effelsberg 100m telescope and the Very Large Array. Additionally, the J=9 direct l-type transition was detected in emission presumably indicating a weak maser. All lines are blueshifted with respect to the systemic velocity of CRL 618 indicating that the lines originate from a hot, expanding circumstellar envelope. The HCN column density along the line of sight in front of the continuum is 2E18 cm^-2., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, to appear in ApJ

We used the Effelsberg 100m and IRAM 30m telescopes to observe vibrationally excited cyanoacetylene (HCCCN) in several rotational transitions toward the proto-planetary nebula CRL618. Lines from 9 different vibrationally excited states with energies ranging up to 1600 K above ground were detected. The lines show P Cygni profiles indicating that the HCCCN emission originates from an expanding and accelerating molecular envelope. The HCCCN rotational temperature varies with velocity, peaks at 520 K, 3 km/s blue-shifted from the systemic velocity and decreases with higher blueshift of the gas. The column density of the absorbing HCCCN is 3-6 x 1E17 cm^2. We modeled spectra based on spherical models of the expanding envelope which provide an excellent fit to the observations, and discuss the implications of the models. Additionally, lines from 13C substituted cyanoacetylene were observed. They can be used to constrain the 12C/13C ratio in this source to 10+-2., Comment: 27 pages, 9 figures, to appear in ApJ

We report the detection of hard X-ray emission (>2 keV) from a number of point sources associated with the very young massive star-forming region IRAS 19410+2336. The X-ray emission is detected from several sources located around the central and most deeply embedded mm continuum source, which remains undetected in the X-ray regime. All X-ray sources have K-band counterparts, and those likely belonging to the evolving massive cluster show near-infrared colors in the 2MASS data indicative of pre-main-sequence stages. The X-ray luminosities around 10^{31} erg/s are at the upper end of luminosities known for low-mass pre-main-sequence sources, and mass estimates based on the infrared data indicate that at least some of the X-ray detected sources are intermediate-mass objects. Therefore, we conclude that the X-ray emission is due to intermediate-mass pre-main-sequence Herbig Ae/Be stars or their precursors. We have carried out a submillimeter continuum and spectroscopic study of the W43 main complex, a massive star-forming region, which harbors a giant HII region. The maps reveal a filamentary structure containing ~50 fragments with masses of 40-4000 Msun and typical diameters of 0.25 pc. Their large sizes, large non-thermal velocities (Dv ~ 5 km/s), and high densities (n_H2 ~ 10^6 cm^-3) suggest that they are protoclusters and excellent sites to form massive stars. Follow-up observations are necessary, but we have already identified three protoclusters to be very good candidates for containing very young massive protostars. The starburst cluster, that excites the giant HII region has a large impact on the molecular complex. However, it remains unclear if this first episode of star formation is triggering the formation of new massive stars, through ionization shocks crossing the closeby molecular clouds. W43 is thus an ideal laboratory to investigate massive star formation from the protostellar phase to that of giant HII regions. Moreover, the very active star-forming complex W43 may be considered a Galactic mini-starburst region that could be used as a miniature model of starburst galaxies., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures, to be published in Astrophysical Journal

We present a comparison of ClassII CH3OH and H2O masers at high spatial resolution in a sample of 29 massive star-forming regions. Absolute positions of both maser types are compared with mm dust continuum, cm continuum and mid-infrared sources. The Caltech Submillimeter Observatory has detected triply deuterated ammonia, ND3, through its 10a-00s transition near 310 GHz. Emission is found in the NGC 1333 region, both towards IRAS 4A and a position to the South-East where DCO+ peaks. In both cases, the hyperfine ratio indicates that the emission is optically thin. Column densities of ND3 are 3--6 x 10^11 cm^-2 for T_ex=10 K and twice as high for T_ex=5 K. Using a Monte Carlo radiative transfer code and a model of the structure of the IRAS source with temperature and density gradients, the estimated ND3 abundance is 3.2 x 10^-12 if ND3/H2 is constant throughout the envelope. In the more likely case that ND3/H2D+ is constant, ND3/H2 peaks in the cold outer parts of the source at a value of 1.0 x 10^-11. To reproduce the observed NH3/ND3 abundance ratio of ~1000, grain surface chemistry requires an atomic D/H ratio of ~0.15 in the gas phase, >10 times higher than in recent chemical models. More likely, the deuteration of NH3 occurs by ion-molecule reactions in the gas phase, in which case the data indicate that deuteron transfer reactions are much faster than proton transfers., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures; to be published in Astronomy & Astrophysics (Letters)

We present a high-angular-resolution molecular line and millimeter continuum study of the massive star formation site IRAS 05358+3543. The most remarkable feature is a highly collimated (collimation factor ~10) and massive (>10 M_sun) bipolar outflow of 1 pc length, which is part of a quadrupolar outflow system. The three observed molecular outflows forming the IRAS 05358+3543 outflow system resemble, in structure and collimation, those typical of low-mass star-forming regions. They might therefore, just like low-mass outflows, be explained by shock entrainment models of jets. We estimate a mass accretion rate of 10^{-4) M_sun/yr, sufficient to overcome the radiative pressure of the central object and to build up a massive star, lending further support to the hypothesis that massive star formation occurs similarly to low-mass star formation, only with higher accretion rates and energetics., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, accepted for Astronomy and Astrophysics

We have observed the J=5-4 ground state transition of FeO at a frequency of 153 GHz towards a selection of galactic sources. Towards the galactic center source SgrB2, we see weak absorption at approximately the velocity of other features towards this source (62 km s$^{-1}$ LSR). Towards other sources, the results were negative as they were also for MgOH(3-2) and FeC(6-5). We tentatively conclude that the absorption seen toward SgrB2 is due to FeO in the hot ($\sim $ 500 K) relatively low density absorbing gas known to be present in this line of sight. This is the first (albeit tentative) detection of FeO or any iron--containing molecule in the interstellar gas. Assuming the observed absorption to be due to FeO, we estimate [FeO]/[SiO] to be of order or less than 0.002 and [FeO]/[H$_{2}$] of order $3 10^{-11}$. This is compatible with our negative results in other sources. Our results suggest that the iron liberated from grains in the shocks associated with SgrB2 remains atomic and is not processed into molecular form., Comment: 1 postscrit figure,10 pages

We present a mapping study of massive molecular outflows in 26 high-mass star-forming regions at 11'' spatial resolution. Bipolar morpholgy is found in 80% of the sources and the collimation is higher than previously thought. Additionally, we find that well known low-mass correlations continue up to the high-mass regime, and accretion rates are around 10^(-4) Msun/yr rising as high as 10^(-3) Msun/yr. A tight correlation between the outflow and the core mass is established, implying that the accretion rate is a rather linear function of the initial core mass. We describe a systematic program aimed at identifying and characterizing candidate high-mass proto-stellar objects (HMPOs). Our candidate sample consists of 69 objects selected by criteria based on those established by Ramesh & Sridharan (1997) using far-infrared, radio-continuum and molecular line data. Infrared-Astronomical-Satellite (IRAS) and Midcourse-Space-Experiment (MSX) data were used to study the larger scale environments of the candidate sources and to determine their total luminosities and dust temperatures. To derive the physical and chemical properties of our target regions, we observed continuum and spectral line radiation at millimeter and radio wavelengths. We imaged the free-free and dust continuum emission at wavelengths of 3.6 cm and 1.2 mm, respectively, searched for H2O and CH3OH maser emission and observed the CO 2-1 and several NH3 lines toward all sources in our sample. Other molecular tracers were observed in a subsample. The presented results indicate that a substantial fraction of our sample harbors HMPOs in a pre-UCHII region phase, the earliest known stage in the high-mass star formation process., Comment: 16 pages, 11 eps-figures. We present a detailed 1.2 mm continuum and CS spectral line study of a large sample of 69 massive star forming regions in very early stages of evolution, most of them prior to building up an ultracompact HII region. The continuum data show a zoo of different morphologies and give detailed information on the spatial distributions, the masses, column densities and average densities of the whole sample. Fitting the radial intensity profiles shows that three parameters are needed to describe the spatial distribution of the sources: constant emission from the center out to a few arcsec radius followed by a first power law intensity distribution which steepens further outside into a second power law distribution. The mean inner power law intensity index mi (I~r^(-mi)) is 1.2 corresponding to density indices p (n~r^(-p)) of 1.6. In total the density distribution of our massive star formations sites seem to be not too different from their low-mass counterparts, but we show that setting tight constrains on the density indices is very difficult and subject to many possible errors. The local densities we derive from CS calculations are higher (up to one order of magnitude) than the mean densities we find via the mm-continuum. Such inhomogeneous density distribution reflects most likely the ubiquitous phenomenon of clumping and fragmentation in molecular clouds. We present millimeter wavelength detections of three faint sources that are most likely high-redshift starburst galaxies. For one of the sources, which was previously discovered with SCUBA at 850 mu m, we present a detection with the IRAM interferometer at 240 GHz (1.25 mm) that shows the object unresolved at an angular resolution of 2.''5, and coincident within 1'' with a radio source and a galaxy detected in the near-infrared. The two other sources were discovered in a deep 250 GHz (1.2 mm) survey with the Max-Planck Millimeter Bolometer (MAMBO) array at the IRAM 30m telescope. Both have fluxes of ~4 mJy and radio counterparts with a 1.4 GHz flux density of ~75 muJy. Their radio-to-mm flux ratios suggest redshifts larger than 2. Both sources are faint in the optical and near-infrared, one showing a 20.5 mag K-band counterpart. From our data and that available in the literature, we estimate the redshift distribution of twenty-two faint mm and sub-mm sources and conclude that the majority of them are likely to be at z>2., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, A&A submitted

We report the detection of a strong submillimeter wavelength HCN laser line at a frequency near 805 GHz toward the carbon star IRC+10216. This line, the J=9-8 rotational transition within the (04(0)0) vibrationally excited state, is one of a series of HCN laser lines that were first detected in the laboratory in the early days of laser spectroscopy. Since its lower energy level is 4200 K above the ground state, the laser emission must arise from the inner part of IRC+10216's circumstellar envelope. To better characterize this environment, we observed other, thermally emitting, vibrationally excited HCN lines and find that they, like the laser line, arise in a region of temperature approximately 1000 K that is located within the dust formation radius; this conclusion is supported by the linewidth of the laser. The (04(0)0), J=9-8 laser might be chemically pumped and may be the only known laser (or maser) that is excited both in the laboratory and in space by a similar mechanism., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

The IRAM interferometer has been used to detect the submm source HDF 850.1 found by Hughes et al. (1998) in the Hubble Deep Field. The flux density measured at 1.3mm is 2.2 mJy, in agreement with the flux density measured at the JCMT. The flux densities and upper limits measured at 3.4, 2.8, 1.3, 0.85, and 0.45 mm show that the emission is from dust. We suggest that the 1.3mm dust source is associated with the optical arc-like feature, 3-593.0, that has a photometric redshift of about 1.7. If HDF 850.1 is at this redshift and unlensed, its spectral energy distribution, combined with that of 3-593.0, matches closely that of the ultraluminous galaxy VII Zw 31. Another possibility is that the dust source may be gravitationally lensed by the elliptical galaxy 3-586.0 at a redshift of 1., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

We used the IRAM Interferometer to obtain sub-arcsecond resolution observations of the high-mass star-forming region W3(OH) and its surroundings at a frequency of 220 GHz. With the improved angular resolution, we distinguish 3 peaks in the thermal dust continuum emission originating from the hot core region about 6 arcsec (0.06 pc) east of W3(OH). The dust emission peaks are coincident with known radio continuum sources, one of which is of non-thermal nature. The latter source is also at the center of expansion of a powerful bipolar outflow observed in water maser emission. We determine the hot core mass to be 15 solar masses based on the integrated dust continuum emission. Simultaneously many molecular lines are detected allowing the analysis of the temperature structure and the distribution of complex organic molecules in the hot core. From HNCO lines, spanning a wide range of excitation, two 200 K temperature peaks are found coincident with dust continuum emission peaks suggesting embedded heating sources within them., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures
